Teleyem Renner Ikuru (born 24 February 1966) is the 5th and current Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Nigeria, since 2007. He was reelected for a second term on 26 April 2011. Ikuru is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party but defected to the All Progressive Congress in November 2013.

Early life and education

Tele Ikuru was born in Ikuru Town, Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State to the family of late Elder Renner Ikuru of Ikuru Royal House of Ikuru Town in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State [1].

He had his early education at St. Simon’s Primary School, Ikuru Town, and State School, Amaigbo, Port Harcourt, from 1972 to 1979. He earned his West African School Certificate in 1985 after attending Kalabari National College (KNC), Buguma [2]. He obtained a Bachelor of Technology degree (honours) in Mechanical Engineering from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt in 1992 [3]

He served out the mandatory National Youth Service at Nigeria’s biggest hydro-electric power plant, the Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Station as a Principal Technical Assistant, with supervisory capacity in 1992 [8]. He began his working career at the popular Timber Market on Iloabuchi Street, Port Harcourt where he initiated the formation of the Ilaobuchi Timber Carriers Union that subsists until today [9]. He also worked at Bariod Investment Limited, Unipad Nigeria Ltd, Simag Construction and Trading Company. He also taught at Kenneth Commercial College and Allenco Comprehensive Secondary School all in Diobu, Port Harcourt. He was to later also work with the defunct Logos Community Bank, Port Harcourt and Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), in Warri, Delta State [9].

Early Political Career

In 1999, he was called to serve as Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources and later Housing and Urban Development during former Governor, Dr Peter Odili’s administration. Besides, from 2001 to 2003, Ikuru, as Commissioner for Agriculture was a member, Board of Directors of the Rivers State Government-owned Risonpalm Limited, member, Governing Council of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt and also a member of the Rivers State Tenders Board.

Deputy Governor, Rivers State

In 2007, he contested as running mate to then Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, and won the PDP primaries for the Rivers State Governorship race. Political manoeuvrings by leaders of the party threw spanner into the works and he was chosen as running mate to Sir Celestine Omehia and they won the Governorship election of 2007. Upon the Supreme Court judgement of 26 October, 2007 that ousted Omehia, declaring Rotimi Amaechi as the winner of the April 2007 Governorship election in Rivers State, he was called upon by Rotimi Amaechi to serve as his deputy.

He contested and was reelected alongside Amaechi for a second term of four years in April 2011. Since the inception of the administration, he has continued to be a strong pillar of support to Governor Amaechi that it is difficult to separate him from the excellent developmental strides the administration had recorded in lifting the standards of living of the people of Rivers State.

Early in 2014, due to certain issues that resulted in political controversies between the Federal Government and the Rivers State Government, Engr. Ikuru defected alongside his boss, Governor Rotimi Amaechi from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Party (APC).

As Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Engr. Tele Ikuru has served as Chairman of the State Boundary Commission, Chairman, Local Organizing Committees of the 17th, 18th, and 19th editions of the National Sports Festival (Garden City Games 2011, Eko Games 2013, Paradise Games 2014), the UNESCO 2014 Port Harcourt World Book Capital, amongst others.

Engr. Ikuru is a Fellow, Rivers State Board of the Justice of Peace (FJP), Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE), Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FNiMechE), Institute of Corporate Executives of Nigeria (FICEN), member, Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN), and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

He has also been awarded Commissioner of the Year 2004 by the Port Harcourt Telegraph Newspaper, Award of Excellence for Resourceful and Visionary Leadership by the Igbo Agwuru Asa Youth Forum of Abia State, the “Passionate for Charity” Award by the True Vine Women International Outreach, Port Harcourt, the Award of Excellence in Public Service by the Christ Apostolic Church (C.A.C) Worldwide, among others.

Controversy

In December, 2012, a non-governmental organization, Social Action, accused Engr. Tele Ikuru of ordering the eviction of an HIV/AIDS patient, one Mrs. Chidinma Maureen Lucky, from a flood relief camp in Okwuzu, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, leading to her death.

The NGO, Social Action, alleged that Lucky was sent out of Okwuzu Flood Relief Camp set up for those displaced by floods in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area by the Rivers State Flood Management Committee because of her health status on the orders of the state Deputy Governor, Mr. Tele Ikuru.

The Rivers State Government however refuted the NGO’s claim absolving the Deputy Governor of any responsibility as no evidence upon investigation showed any link between the Deputy Governor and the events which led to the unfortunate demise of the lady.

Engr. Ikuru, a Christian Anglican, is married to Dr Mina Ikuru and blessed with four children.

Controversies

Tele Ikuru’s life history is not without its fair share of controversies. In December 2012, a non-governmental organization, Social Action accused Ikuru of causing the death of an HIV/AIDS-infected woman, one Maureen Lucky, an indigene of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of Rivers State. The State Government has since refuted the claim.

MINA IKURU

Mrs. Mina Tele-Ikuru, is the wife of the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Engr. Tele Ikuru.

She was born on the 24th September, 1975, into the family of Elder Lasbury Dabibi of the Ikiromaowiye Compound of Tombia in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Dr Ikuru attended the Army Day Nursery School, GRA, Port Harcourt, then proceeded to the University Demonstration Primary School, and the International Secondary School, all in the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Nkpolu Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt.

She later obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Port Harcourt School of Medicine, Alakahia, Choba, Port Harcourt.

Her career path took her to the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMSH), Port Harcourt where she works as medical officer in the Department of Paediatrics. Her career as a medical doctor has seen her positively impact several lives in the course of discharging her duties.

She is also a Diamond Manager with Forever Living Products Nigeria Limited, a network marketing and wellness organization in Nigeria and over 80 countries across the world.

Her marriage to Engr. Ikuru is blessed with four children.
