Environmental policy

Why you have chosen this article to evaluate?

[edit]

I have selected this article because I am passionate about the influence of political interests, as well as the socioeconomic objectives of international actors, in addressing global environmental preservation efforts. The enactment and operationalization of such public policies, such as carbon taxes or natural resource regulations, are greatly relevant to the safety of current and future populations. Additionally, the impacts of climate change disproportionately affect communities of color and of low socioeconomic status and as such, it is increasingly important that information is not only accessible online, but is also a accurate. Consequently, larger populations will be provided with the opportunity to participate in environmental advocacy in a productive manner. Upon initially reading this article, found the information provided to address multiple important aspects of environmental policies, including the rationale behind why such public policies must exist, the role of non-governmental organizations in influencing public opinion, and the history of the progression of both the politics and study of environmentalism.

Evaluate the article

[edit]
  1. In evaluating the content within this article, the audience is only provided with information that is relevant to the topic of environmental policy, reducing excess information that would distract individuals away from the focus. Although the information is accurate and up-to-date, the addition of a more diverse array of perspectives from around the globe could be added to make the article more effective in informing the audience about the international sphere of environmental politics. Furthermore, the Wikipedia article would benefit greatly from a greater discussion on policy analysis that takes into consideration the social and economic aspects of environmental policy.
  2. The tone of the article is neutral, presenting no bias toward a particular position regarding environmental policy, but rather, providing information regarding the tools and mechanics, through which such policies are formed. The viewpoints within the Wikipedia page are focused on environmental policy in the United States, and as such, international perspectives and challenges in regard to the preservation of natural resources and ecosystems remain underrepresented.
  3. The links to the citations included within he references section of the Wikipedia page successfully guide the audience to the sources used by the authors. The reviewed books and articles not only sufficiently support the claims within the article, but are also reliable references, as most are derived from published and peer edited sources. If there are biases present, however, the Wikipedia page does not note them. It is important to note, however, that the references within the Wikipedia page are all from western sources, lacking an international and diverse array of authors and publications.
  4. After evaluating the Talk Page, I found there to be multiple conversations in regard to the modification of external links that were not active within the references subsection that were edited so they would effectively redirect the audience to the sources mentioned throughout the Wikipedia page. Additionally, multiple commentators offered suggestions of including perspectives regarding environmental policy beyond the scope of the United States, as well as prompted the addition of information in regard to the perception of such policies beyond the direct relation to ecological concerns. Furthermore, contributors suggested that the Wikipedia page also include an analysis of negative externalities, the free-rider problem, and the tragedy of the commons as it pertains to the necessity of the development of environmental policy. This article was rated as "Rated C-class, Top-importance" for the following WikiProjects: WikiProject Environment, WikiProject Politics, and WikiProject Science Policy.
