Sleep deprivation, also known as sleep insufficiency or sleeplessness, is the condition of not having adequate duration and/or quality of sleep to support decent alertness, performance, and health. It can be either chronic or acute and may vary widely in severity. There are tons of factors that contribute to sleep deprivation. It may not just be lack of sleep like some may think. Factors can include sleep hygiene, lifestyle choices, work obligations, sleep disorders, and other medical conditions. People don't take sleep deprivation as seriously as they should. [edit]The average adult needs seven or more hours of sleep per night to maintain health. The amount of sleep needed can depend on sleep quality, age, pregnancy, and level of sleep deprivation. Insufficient sleep has been linked to weight gain, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, heart disease, and strokes. Sleep deprivation can also lead to high anxiety, irritability, erratic behavior, poor cognitive functioning and performance, and psychotic episodes. For example many of these conditions cause sleep deprivation like sleep apnea. This condition cause awakens at night because it is hard for the person to breath and the body sends signals to the brain to wake up and breath. This can cause many people to become tired due to their constant awakens at night. This is just one example that causes major sleep deprivation and a lifestyle that is not happy living to many.
These symptoms can be very draining for many. It creates a lifestyle where a person is exhausted during the day because they got no sleep at night, but then when a person tries to get sleep at night they can not because of the list of disorders that they may have. Drowsiness is one of the main signs that a person is experiencing sleep deprivation. When a person experiences this it is typically during the day time where they experiencing most of the exhaustion levels. Many of these symptoms have effects during the day which include, slow thinking, reduced attention span, worsened memory, lack of energy and poor decision making.
Hormones can also affect sleep. Different hormones like norepinephrine, adrenaline, histamine, and cortisol can cause sleep deprivation. The reason hormones can create such lack of sleep is because they can secrete stress which can cause an alert to the nervous system to awake someone. A person who is always anxious or has some sort of stress can experience symptoms such as drowsiness, lack of sleep, daydreaming and other symptoms. "If one experiences prolonged or chronic stress, the body releases adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which in turn releases cortisol. Levels of ACTH tend to be higher in people who have insomnia."[1] Hormones are truly important to the body as they help regulate different parts of the body and how a person may go about their everyday life. That fact that sleep does have an effect on our hormones is often overlooked, but sometimes a major hormonal imbalance may effect ones every day sleep.
"Chronic sleep deprivation can contribute to a wide range of health problems. Sleep plays a fundamental role in the effective functioning of nearly all systems of the body, so a persistent lack of sleep creates significant risks to physical and mental health"[2]
