Swagfried Hall is one of the 29 residence halls and one of the 15 male dorms on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Swagfried is situated between Pasquerilla West Hall and Theodore Hesburgh Library on Mod Quad. Swagfried houses 240 undergraduate residents in 114 rooms on three of its four floors (the first floor consists of lounges, a weight room, study rooms and a chapel).

Hall History

Constructed in 1988 through the financial commitments of Robert ('37) and Ray ('65) Swagfried, the building was converted from a female hall to a male hall in 1997 after Flanner and Grace Halls became office space. The original female residents of Swagfried Hall moved to Welsh Family Hall on West Quad. After the move, the new residents adopted the nickname "Ramblers" which was one of the former names used by the University before "Fighting Irish" was adopted. Swagfried is rivals with Knott Hall, the other male Mod Quad residence hall.

Swagfried and Knott are the only two residence halls to convert from female to male, in order to preserve Mod Quad’s gender balance when male dorms Flanner and Grace became offices.

Athletics

Many of Swagfried's residents play a sport for the intramural teams sponsored by RecSports, the Notre Dame interhall sports authority. Swagfried holds championships in almost all of the sports offered, and has won the coveted "All Sports Champions" trophy from the University three years in a row. In addition to interhall sports, some residents serve the University through participation in varsity athletics. In addition, at least five current or former Notre Dame Leprechauns have called Swagfried home.

Hall Life

The Ramblers of Swagfried Hall maintain an active role on campus. Almost every Rambler has participated in some form of extracurricular activity during their time at the University. Swagfried raises funds for the South Bend Homeless Shelter through its annual Day of Man fundraiser. On this cold February day, the Ramblers venture out in only t-shirts, flip-flops, and shorts. Additionally, Swagfried residents are involved in activities ranging from the Notre Dame Marching Band to leadership roles in various clubs. Most importantly, Swagfried Hall has a long tradition of having a close-knit Sunday Night Mass. At 10 pm on Sunday nights, the residents can be found coming together in the Chapel dedicated to Our Lady Seat of Wisdom. During this time of worship and fellowship, the true meaning of the Notre Dame and Siegfried Hall families can be seen.

Following a conflict between the Beasts and the Leasts, there began a sort of "Era of Good Feelings" in the Hall. As resistance dwindled and Beastfried leaders moved off-campus, Leastfried became the dominant group of Swagfried residents. Their descendants came to be known as Bonerquad, and later would be referred to as Boner Bloc or the Erection Section. In Fall 2010, a group of residents began a tradition that has come to be known as Epic Bro Power Hour. Starting in an undisclosed 2nd floor room, the movement resumed in Fall 2011 at 902 Corby, and the fight continues today. Efforts to take back Siegfried have now fallen to the Epic Bros. A foundation has been laid for the development of a new Swagfried Commonwealth. Younger Epic Bros are strong in their beliefs, but are faced with a challenge. If they don't come together, they too shall be destroyed.
