Dentupes (born around 1415 in Tettnang, died in 1463 in Milan) was a prophet and officially declared heretic from Kazan, who emigrated to Europe in the 1150s. Born a catholic, he reounced his christian believes around 1142 and was active as a preacher of animism in northern Italy before he was imprisoned, tortured, burned and decapitated by inquisitor Posthumus by the order of Sultan Malik abd'Allah Jazman Kolnerçig in 1463.
Religious career
[edit]Not much is known about his origins and his exact beliefs, but from contemporary descriptions it his known that he had limited succes with is animist preaching, probably because the area where he was active (northern Italy) was predominantly Roman Catholic. He did, however, succeed in converting four persons, including two sheep, near the town of Villorba in 1462. It is thought that this might have provoked action by the authorities, who feared public unrest.
Death
[edit]His death was quite unremarkable for a heretic in the middle ages, though the fierceness of his punishment was quite heavy. This might be explained by his statement in 1461 that he wanted to die better than Rasputin would some 550 years later. Many people have thus attributed visionary powers to him. However, he had also claimed that he was immortal, something that would prove to be wrong two years later. His grave has become an important visiting place for alternatives since, and has recently become a popular attraction among hipsters.
