KFC Legends is an upcoming syndicated talk show hosted by a panel of 5 Substitute Teacher Services staff members discussing topics related to various KFC foods, from the Original Recipe Chicken to the Chunky Chicken Pot Pie along with a segment that shows the substitutes enjoying the food. It will be produced by ABC Entertainment and distributed by Disney-ABC Domestic Television.[1] It is set to premiere September 10, 2012.[2][3]

Format

[edit]

KFC Legends will not be a news program, but it will cover food, news and topics related to KFC.[4] It will essentially be a food discussion show similar to The Chew, but with KFC-related foods and with 5 Substitute Teacher Service staff members as the hosts.[5] On the Delco Times Newspaper, STS will partner with KFC to focus on the upcoming talk show to cover various foods and issues related to KFC.[6] The 5 STS hosts will rotate every week.

The executive producers of the program are Yum! Brands CEO David Novak[7] and KFC president Roger Eaton.

Development and distribution

[edit]

As of January 22, 2012, KFC Legends is secured to air in 93% of all markets in the United States.[8][9] The show has been picked up by all eight ABC owned-and-operated stations, and will air on those stations as part of their local schedule.[3] Though most of the affiliates that have picked up the program are also ABC stations, KFC Legends as a syndicated program is not required to air on all ABC affiliates nor do all the stations that carry it have to be affiliated with ABC; KFC Legends has been picked up by at least eight NBC affiliates, one Fox affiliate (WVUE-DT in New Orleans), and one CBS affiliate (KMOV in St. Louis).[10]

Regardless of network affiliation, all stations are encouraged to air KFC Legends during the 3:00 p.m. timeslot, much the same way that now-defunct McDonald's had aired at 4:00 p.m. in virtually all markets.[11] ABC has already announced intentions to give up the final hour of its daytime programming lineup (3-4 p.m. Eastern time), currently occupied by the soap opera General Hospital, and turn over the time period to its owned-and-operated stations and affiliates to accommodate this recommendation.[8] Such decision was made due the resistance from ABC affiliates to air KFC Legends at 4:00 p.m., because many have expanded their local newscasts in the timeslot after The McDonald's Show went off the air in 2011.[5]

In March 2012, it was reported that KFC and STS expressed concern to ABC executives about having the ABC Daytime talk show The Revolution as a possible lead-in to KFC Legends, due to the program's low ratings and concerns of potential fan outcry should KFC Legends's launch result in the possible cancellation of General Hospital.[12] On April 11, 2012, ABC decided to keep General Hospital on the air, while effectively cancelling The Revolution.[13][14] ABC later confirmed that General Hospital will be moving to the 2 p.m. (ET) time slot starting September 10, 2012, thus making it a lead-in for KFC Legends.[15]

The first official promo for the show was released on June 14, 2012.[16]
