Deletion review for Anne Kilkenny

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Anne Kilkenny. Since you closed the deletion discussion for this article, speedy-deleted it, or were otherwise interested in the article, you might want to participate in the deletion review. Stifle (talk) 09:47, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

How do you justify a delete, when under identical circumstances last week Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Neil Gallagher (footballer) three similiar articles were kept. Don't we need consistency? Can you expand your closing statement? Nfitz (talk) 16:03, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

No, I was just judging consensus for that debate. AfD isn't a court system and precedent is fairly meaningless. There is a debate of the interpretation over WP:ATHLETE, it would be best to attempted to have that clarified. BJTalk 17:06, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
There's been plenty of debate over that. And little consensus. Meanwhile anarchy continues ... Nfitz (talk) 17:19, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Images for deletion

Hi,

Your bot recently tagged several images I uploaded for deletion (see my talk page for a full list). Several of these images were recently used in the Gunnerkrigg Court article but have been commented out for now (they are images of characters in the comic, and for the moment I have commented those characters out of the article because I decided they were not "major" enough for inclusion); I was planning on keeping the images there for future use, as the article is undergoing frequent updates and the plot of the comic (as well as different interpretations from different Wikipedia editors) may cause some of the images to be used again at short notice. Would this be reason to keep the images on Wikipedia? (I'm not challenging your judgment, I'm just asking, because I am relatively unfamiliar still with Wikipedia image and fair use guidelines.) Thanks, Politizer (talk) 05:54, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Sorry to bother you again, but I'm still waiting for a response about this question.....thanks, Politizer (talk) 02:31, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
The policy says the images need to be used or deleted. BJTalk 02:51, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Wikistalk tool question

Does your wikistalk tool accept IPs as well as usernames? It appears to ignore any IPs (and just plain breaks if there's no valid usernames) but does count IPs in the totals (eg "edited by 1 of 2 users"). Is there a trick? Delicious carbuncle (talk) 21:20, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Bot Malfunctioning

Hello, It appears that your Bot is removing images from sites that are properly copyrighted, including my own talk page Talk:Sapperbdl. Is their a particular reason it keeps deleting the Image:CanMilEng.gif off my template. The Bot has NOT removed it from any other article on Wikipedia. Why is it doing it to mine?

Sapperbdl (talk) 03:59, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Non-free images are not allowed on user pages. See WP:NFCC for more information. BJTalk 05:28, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
So exactly how am I suppose to get an image, not necessarily that one, on my userpage. That image is of the cap badge of the Canadian Military Engineers, to which I belong? Sapperbdl (talk) 13:32, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Works by the Canadian government are under crown copyright for 50 years. You can use any free image. Anything on Wikimedia Commons or images here uploaded with a free license. BJTalk 13:51, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Bran1.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Bran1.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:08, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Magibon (2nd nomination)

I would like to add a few comments but unfortunate for me, the discussion seems to be closed and archived, I would like to know if it be possible for you to prolong the said discussion. I believe it to be in the better interest of wikipedia and subject of the article to do so.

Also, Could I get a detailed (but not too detailed) guide of how the votes were counted? Thanks.

Hetelllies (talk) 10:13, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

I don't think extending it would be a good idea, with the amount of single purpose account !votes it would be better to just start a new one. I discounted every !vote except for those by Ten Pound Hammer, Nsk92, Crusio, Section8pidgeon and Lankiveil. Looking at just those I didn't see any consensus either way. I hope you will be able to rectify the link. It would be very miss leading for new comers if you fail to do so. Thanks again. Hetelllies (talk) 10:56, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Blatant advertising on Allscripts

My intent is a scholarly and workmanlike entry with a neutral point of view and verification. The article's internal and external references support notability. I'd like to try again, paying close attention to requirements. I'll remove the unfulfilled table of content entries that appear to simply be advertising for products.

How do I gain access to do this? Your guidance is appreciated.

Image bot question

I recently got three notices posted to my talk page at once by BJBot regarding orphaned fair use images that I had previously uploaded, but in all three cases it turns out that the images are orphaned precisely because new .png conversions were uploaded via the bot itself just before the notices were posted to my talk page. I have no objection to the file conversions, obviously, and given that they've been converted I have no objection to the old .jpg or .gif files being deleted, either — but is there a way that the bot could, in future, distinguish "your image is actually orphaned" from "your old image is going to be deleted because it's been converted to .png format" so that the user doesn't have to waste time investigating why the image is orphaned? Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 14:40, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

I suggest your bot is stopped until you rewrite it to prevent what is happening. This is rather excessive and unnecessary. 121 messages to one person in one day, and not one of them was needed, as all the images listed (which had to be checked individually) had been replaced by png files. It may be a matter of looking into the process of replacing these files so that the originals are automatically deleted without a message, but in the meantime, your bot's messages are causing work which need not be done. I've personally had three today. Regards SilkTork *YES! 16:54, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Fixed, it should no longer notify the uploader when a PNG version available template is on the image. BJTalk 17:46, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Linking authors

You recently removed a link to the author in a source citation (here). It's really no skin off my nose, but I would point out the article on Citing Sources mentions:

If your source is not findable online, it should be findable in reputable libraries, archives, or collections. If a citation without an external link is challenged as unfindable, any of the following is sufficient to show the material to be reasonably findable (though not necessarily reliable): providing an ISBN or OCLC number; linking to an established Wikipedia article about the source (the work, its author, or its publisher); or directly quoting the material on the talk page, briefly and in context.

Although in this case the source is findable online, I can find (after a cursory search, admittedly) no specific interdiction concerned with linking authors' names in source citations with Wikipedia articles on that particular author. In fact, if anything, it increases verifiability, which is surely a point in its favour. If there is such an interdiction, could you please point it out to me; and if not, perhaps you would consider reinstating the link.

With many thanks. Nick Michael (talk) 14:05, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

User pages are not articles and should not be linked to from articles. If the author became notable enough to have an article it would make sense to then link to that. BJTalk 18:40, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Oh well, I'll just have to go on trying to become notable! Nick Michael (talk) 19:48, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Strappado merge

Hello, I see that there was a discussion Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Strappado bondage, with a result to merge Strappado bondage into Strappado. The notice of the AfD does not look like it was posted to either Talk:Strappado bondage or to Talk:Strappado. This looks like a huge procedural issue, with the very editors having the most stake in both articles' disposition being excluded from the discussions.

Is there a process to appeal the result of an AfD? TJRC (talk) 03:49, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

WP:Deletion review. BJTalk 03:51, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. I notice that part of the instructions for that say to "please attempt to discuss the matter with the admin who deleted the page (or otherwise made the decision)," I assume by pointing me to DR, you've got no problem with that. By the way, although I'm correct above noting there was no posting on either articles talk pages, there was indeed a notice on the Strappado bondage article itself. I should have checked that. But no notice on either Strappado or Talk:Strappado, so my main point remains; but I did want to acknowledge my error. TJRC (talk) 04:24, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
I just commented on the DR, I'm not quite sure if you are contesting how I closed the AfD or the lack of advertising. Either way, no objections. BJTalk 04:25, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Got it. To be clear, I'm not criticizing you, or for that matter, anyone. Everyone seems to have acted in good faith here, but the editors of Strappado were shut out, since the AfD morphed into a merge discussion. If it had been proposed as a merge from the get-go, both articles would have had notice. TJRC (talk) 04:32, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

from your bots archives §hep¡Talk to me! 19:42, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi there, when a requester posts a non-free image for cleanup, vectorization, ect. they don't always read the How-to and end up posting the direct image onto the page. ie instead of :Image:Copyrighted.jpg BJBot replaces with the copyright notice image. This is very unhelpful as it sometimes makes it impossible for a graphist to know what image was posted without going back (sometimes through 100s of edits) into the history to find the image. It would be of much greater help if BJBot could replace with :Image:Copyrighted.jpg so graphists still know which image is in need of repair. I know it's possible, just wondering if you'd be so kind to implement it? §hep¡Talk to me! 02:08, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Deletion

By way of experiment, I deliberately didn't touch the discussion when fixing the article. (I have another experiment currently at Corporate personality (AfD discussion) where I have.) Compare the article as it actually stood at the time of closure against what was said about it in the rationales given, and note the lack of any discussion after the first 4 hours. Re-listing to engender further discussion would probably have been better. Uncle G (talk) 14:27, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

I don't check for clandestine rewrites when closing AfDs... BJTalk 00:23, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

I would like to ask you to reconsider your decision to close this as no consensus. While stricly counting "votes" would produce this result, as I pointed out in the debate, several of the keep voters were canvassed by User: Zyxw , as can be seen from his contributions, and most of the keep arhuments were not based in any way on established Wikipedia conventions or policies. I thought I would ask you to re-examine before going ahead with a request at DRV, because I think the delete voters, including myself, made more rational and policy based arguments and were not canvassed for their participation. Thanks. Beeblebrox (talk) 16:46, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

The page I was trying to create was not an advertising page, instead it was just a page that included a list of many non-profit organizations in Central Texas. I work for Leadership Austin and not for any of the companies on that list. We, as an organization, compiled this list of organizations and wanted to post it somewhere on the internet that was easy to find and all in one place. I definitely was not trying to advertise, instead we are trying to make this list available to those who might need it to find an organization in Central Texas for whatever reason. I must say, sir, that your close of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Joseph Wurzelbacher was... masterful. A very Solomonaic compromise was reached, and now EVERYONE hates you! (...so you must be doing something right) ++Lar: t/c 03:58, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Good decision, BJ !. -- Tinu Cherian - 04:36, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
I have to say I was initially doing a "WTF?" when I read your decision, but after thinking it over, it probably makes sense for now, so you have my support. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 13:19, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
Yes, good close! --AmaltheaTalk 16:32, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Wow... Here's a barnstar for common sense

What a Brilliant Idea Barnstar
For your thoughtful and brilliant closure of the contentious AfD of Joe The Plumber I award you this Brilliant Idea Barnstar. If more people approached all problems at Wikipedia with the deliberation and good judgement you did there, Wikipedia would be a far better place. Jayron32.talk.contribs 12:36, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

This Barnstar should be taken away as you presented seriously flawed logic. The article violates BLP policies, but instead of protecting the BLP victim, you protect the editors from undue trauma? This is what you are saying right? The right of anoynomous editors to trash a real person outweighs the rights of a real person? I guess WP continues along its path to the trash bin of society like the Enquirer or other gossip rags. Arzel (talk) 13:27, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Not sure I would have closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Joseph Wurzelbacher the same way, but after reading your close rationale, I have to agree with you 100%. Kudos to you sir, for both your foresight and flexibility! --Kralizec! (talk) 19:03, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Did you mean to type BIO when you typed BLP? J.delanoygabsadds 00:41, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

WP:BLP1E is part of WP:BLP, so that was the intended meaning but it may have been more clear to specify BLP1E. BJTalk 00:46, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

DRV on Joe Wurzelbacher

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Joe Wurzelbacher. Since you closed the deletion discussion for this page, speedy-deleted it, or otherwise were interested in the page, you might want to participate in the deletion review. .

I'm sorry, I have to disagree with your close as keep. Your close does not follow Wikipedia policy of WP:BLP, as you yourself noted. SirFozzie (talk) 01:24, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

I have left a strong message of support re closing and keeping the article here. — LisaSmall T/C 03:00, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Includeonly?

Hi. Regarding this edit, (made in May), to: Template:Ranks and Insignia of NATO Navies/OF/United Kingdom.
(Yes, I'm slow to react.)
I have spent some time re-reading this section; it tells me what it does, but not why one would want to do it.
Sorry to inconvenience you, but could I impose upon you to explain to me why one would want to use this functionality?
Thanks in advance, Pdfpdf (talk) 07:07, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

The images are non-free and shouldn't be displayed on templates. I'm not sure using noinclude is strictly allowed but I couldn't think of a better way. BJTalk 07:15, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

I will update the image with free images from wikipedia then you can review the image and see if it fits with wikipedia's standards Ukabia (talk)

Thank you for blocking repeat vandal Phelpshater2008

As I said above, that user comitted innapropriate sexual comment-adding to the Virgin Islands and than vandalized my and Wysprgr2005's userpage in the same manner when we warned him/her. Your block was officially for username but it was a good move nonetheless. For that I give you:

Where Eagles Dare image

Hi, I'm puzzled by your comment that the image is orphaned, if you go to the Where Eagles Dare article

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where_Eagles_Dare

You'll see the image is used under the soundtrack category, now maybe I've done some lousy coding, but the image is definitely used in an article and it states so at the bottom of the images page and elsewhere. If I'm still wrong I'd appreciate your help. Douglasnicol (talk) 21:32, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

A possible name change for Anonymous (group)

Hello there, I was wondering if you have any thoughts on the matter of moving Anonymous (group) to something more descriptive of the actual nature of the phenomenon (i.e. Anonymous (internet culture)). We are now debating this on the talk page. Your opinion would be most welcome. Spidern Spidern (talk) 16:30, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

You've been mentioned in a news article

 • Young, Joshua (October 20, 2008). "Wikipedia vs. Joe the Plumber: Wikipedia users debate Wurzelbacher's newsworthiness and notability". Columbia Journalism Review. Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Retrieved 2008-10-30.

Cool, huh? Matthewedwards 17:04, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

“Redirecting his article now would only cause needless drama, from both experienced editors who think he should have an article and new editors who can’t understand why we don’t have an article on such a “notable” subject,” wrote Bjweeks, the administrator who ultimately decided that Wurzelbacher’s entry merited inclusion. “In a few days or weeks after the spotlight has moved to another political talking point, this should be revisited with a new AfD. I realize this means that Wikipedia will be a news site for a short period of time but I don’t see any real harm in that.”

Who knows we may have Bjweeks article soon :) -- Tinu Cherian - 17:30, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Michael Goldfarb Issue

Bjweeks.. a couple folks have an issue with you editing the Michael Goldfarb article. Please explain. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Complete disolution (talkcontribs) 06:05, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

As I've said on the talk page, it needs to be sourced before inclusion. Videos only prove what he said, not that it was notable or important. BJTalk 06:12, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello! You had deleted this article, for which I have been coming across additional sources in published magazines since back in September when you deleted it. For example, GameInformer reports that the Gears of War II Lancer, created "using actual in-game data from Gears of War, this full-sized model Lancer is the coolest toy we've seen in a while. Standing 36 inches long by 10-inches tall, the 13-pound Lancer's trigger activates chain-saw sounds and a rumble effect. Amazon.com has an exclusive deal on the product for anyone who preorders the game, but we'eve heard this bad boy will be popping up at other outlets sometime next year." See "Kick Ass: Gears of War II Lancer," Game Informer 187 (November 2008), 48. Thus, would you be so kind as to userfy this article so I can add the new references and content and maybe after a bit of work give it another go around? Thanks! Sincerely, --A NobodyMy talk 15:02, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
