Chiswick Chap, I noticed your doing/have done some reviews for GA, I've managed to have this [1] copyedited by the Guild of copyeditors . I know this is a busy time of year, any help is appreciated--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 14:34, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That's very kind of you to think of me for such a task. However, as a large, current, and sensitive topic, and a WP:MEDRS, not to mention something that all of us have heard more than enough of for two years now, it'll take a bold and knowledgeable reviewer familiar with the medical literature to take it on properly. Of course you have a good chance of finding a reviewer during the current backlog drive ... Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:04, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Tolkien-ish(?) topic idea

[edit]

I stumbled upon a short-lived journal (annual?) called Fastitocalon: Studies in Fantasticism Ancient to Modern: Immortals and the Undead., which nonetheless appears to meet WP:NJOURNAL/GNG due to at least 2+ reviews of it in reliable sources. [3]=[4], [5]. There may be an article in this and the topic seems like something you might be interested in. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 09:32, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting. As it was ephemeral, I'd suggest initially you just add a brief mention to Tolkien studies. Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:34, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You are invited to URFA/2020, a working group reviewing featured articles promoted between 2004 and 2015. An article that you nominated for FA status, Mantis, has been marked as "Satisfactory" by two editors, meaning that they believe the article meets the featured article criteria. Can you check the article and determine if the article meets the FA criteria? If it does, please mark it as "Satisfactory" on WP:URFA/2020B. If you have concerns about the article, we hope that you will fix it up or post your concerns on the article's talk page. If you have any questions, please go to the URFA/2020 talk page or ping me. Thanks for your help and happy editing! Z1720 (talk) 15:13, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for WP:URFA/2020

[edit]

Hey, thanks for marking mantis as satisfactory at WP:URFA/2020B. I noticed that there are other articles you have nominated at FAC pre-2016 that are listed at WP:URFA/2020. Can you review these articles and let us know if they still meet the FA criteria? Just like mantis, if they meet the criteria they can be marked as "satisfactory" and if they don't you can edit the article or post your concerns on the article's talk page. Please post on WT:URFA/2020 or ping me if there are any questions or concerns. Thanks and happy editing! Z1720 (talk) 18:57, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you today for the article "about J. R. R. Tolkien's use of the Old English poem Beowulf in his Middle-earth fantasy writings, especially his 1954–55 work The Lord of the Rings. Like the Beowulf poet, Tolkien was a Christian looking back at a distant pagan past; and he hoped to echo the poem's symbolism that managed never to be a mere allegory."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:19, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the article: Pranahuti (Yogic Transmission)

[edit]

Hi Chiswick.

Thank you for your comments about my article. I just went through the wiki sourcing guidelines and have to agree with most of your observations. They are precise and unambiguous. It helped me understand things better.

Requesting a small consideration from your side... Yogic Transmission appears to be distinctly different from Shaktipat. Shaktipat, I think is mostly associated with Tantra/Tantric Practices and Pranahuti appears to be associated with Raja Yoga Practice, which are considered opposite ideologies. Would you think it be possible to undo this redirection. It can be moved to draft and will do a thorough re-work on it keeping in mind wiki's current sourcing guidelines and the use of tone before publishing again. I ought to have done this before. I am fairly new to wikipedia. So this would be a good learning opportunity for me.

@Oria 6:: Thank you. On the redirect, it is not asserted that Shaktipat and Pranahuti are identical, but they certainly have a family resemblance. On the sourcing of any possible future draft, I had a thorough look for sources and (like you) was unable to find anything much that is suitable, either on the Internet or on my shelf of yoga books (Shaktipat is discussed, Pranahuti not). I think, to avoid wasting time, it would be best to avoid the topic for a year or two until scholars have caught up with it and we have something solid to cite. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:17, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You have a point.
I vaguely remember coming across some research papers published in academic journals. But I am not sure of this. Right now, you've convinced me that we do need better sources. I am sorry for my spent effort. But thank you for helping me learn. Oria 6 (talk) 14:30, 3 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you think the pictures chez Jane Grigson are no good, have a look at the ghastly one we've put in the early years section of Mrs David's article, which is even worse. All that can be said for any of them, and which is why we put them there, is that they break up the great wodges of text and give the poor old reader's eye a bit of respite. I remain unrepentant: they are the best we can do, and – though you plainly disagree – are better than nothing. – Tim riley talk 16:16, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the wonderful article on Magnetoreception

[edit]

The article Magnetoreception is well updated and explained with beautiful illustrations and figures. It was some time I tried to figure out how to update it radically, but had no time and not enough courage. I do agree also with the scientific doubts about how robins can sense the electromagnetic field, for which they need (blue) light, since they migrate during the night. There are some publications that state that the crucial steps occur in the dark. [1]. So that would erase this doubt. Is it allowed to place the figures form scientific publications? That would ease much of the work to do on Wikipedia. Thank you again for the beautiful update. --Phacelias (talk) 07:27, 6 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Phacelias Thank you very much, that's very kind of you. Figures in scientific papers can be used only when the paper is stated to be CC-by-SA (Creative Commons license) like the images on Wikimedia Commons, still a minority thing but increasing. But the diagrams in your source would be quite confusing, I think. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:09, 6 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Elendil

[edit]

On 7 April 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Elendil, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that J. R. R. Tolkien invented Elendil for a time-travel story, but ultimately included the character in his main Middle-earth mythology? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Elendil. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Elendil), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. It seems so. As I said in my edit comment already, the article is in British English. I'm aware that in Am. Eng. there is a preference for 'that' in situations like this one, but in BE there isn't. Having long ago helped to bring the article to GA, I'd be grateful if editors could respect the fact of its language variant and for that matter of its formal review. Eccolo:

Scope of Middle-earth

[edit]

Hi. What evidence do you have that this edit is geographically wrong? I can easily find multiple references confirming it;

"They set sail and leave Middle-earth, and establish a great kingdom of mariners just within furthest sight of Eressëa (but not of Valinor)." and;
"He goes in strength and majesty to Middle-earth, and so vast is his armament, and so terrible are the Númenóreans in the day of their glory that Sauron's servants will not face them." and;
"The Númenóreans (and others of that branch of Humanity, that fought against Morgoth, even if they elected to remain in Middle-earth and did not go to Númenor: such as the Rohirrim) were pure monotheists." -Letters #131
"Elendil and his sons were the chiefs of the small 'faithful' party that took no part in the attempt to seize world-power and immortality by force, and they escaped the drowning of Númenor, and were borne east on a great storm, and cast up on the west-shores of Middle-earth, where they established their realms." -Letters #154
"But the proximity of the Blessed Realm, the very length of their life-span given as a reward, and the increasing delight of life, made them begin to hanker after 'immortality'. They did not break the ban but they begrudged it. And forced east they turned from beneficence in their appearances on the coasts of Middle-earth, to pride, desire of power and wealth. So they came into conflict with Sauron, the lieutenant of the Prime Dark Lord, who had fallen back into evil and was claiming both kingship and godship over Men of Middle-earth." - Letters #156
"From this, far back in the history of 'Elvish', which was beginning, after many tentative starts in boyhood, to take definite shape at the time of the name's adoption, arose eventually (a) the C.E. stem *AYAR 'Sea', primarily applied to the Great Sea of the West, lying between Middle-earth, and Aman the Blessed Realm of the Valar" - Letters #297

Et cetera. Tolkien described Middle-earth as the inhabited lands "between the seas" and the 'known world' or "οἰκουμένη". In OUR time, with Númenor and Valinor removed from the circles of the world, that would mean the entire solid surface of planet Earth... but in the fictional timeframe of his stories, Middle-earth was a subset of Arda (the land, sea, and skies of the world) and Ambar (the solid land within Arda). And that subset specifically excluded Númenor. --CBD 12:34, 22 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Um, your first quote ' They set sail and leave Middle-earth, and establish a great kingdom of mariners just within furthest sight of Eressëa (but not of Valinor) ' makes it crystal clear that the isle of Númenor is NOT Middle-earth. Your 2nd q from letter 154 does the same. That's why I reverted. But perhaps you were making some other point that I've not noticed, in which case we may need some change to the wording. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:38, 22 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't follow. You seem to be agreeing that Númenor is NOT part of Middle-earth... but that is also exactly what the text you reverted as 'geographically wrong' said. --CBD 16:05, 22 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

OK I'll look again, I thought you were arguing the exact opposite which did seem remarkable given the evidence you listed. I thought you'd inserted a claim that Númenor was part of ME, but it's more than likely that the diff display fooled me into seeing the inverse, it's often confusing whether it's B-A or A-B that's being shown. Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:28, 22 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Magnetoreception

[edit]
Hello, our paths don't cross so much these days. I have moved this hook into the queue but I am wondering if it is too precise and needs modification. The article uses such words as "hypothesis" and "suggest that", while the hook makes a statement of fact. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:59, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    • Hi, good to hear from you. Well, scientists are always cautious. There is very little doubt that the mechanism is quantum entanglement, as the field is simply thousands of times too weak to work on molecule-sized objects in any other way, and the evidence in the article is compelling. If you want to say "likely works by quantum effects" that's of course fine. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:08, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, fast response. Actually, I do have a question for you. Your new External links section appears at very end of the article, indicating that it is relevant to the entire subject of the article. But actually it is specifically relevant only to the section 'Hamilton's rule'. Is there any way to fix this? David Spector (talk) 13:58, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The right way would be to cite the sources in the text that section, in that case. But I think it's fine as it is. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:02, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you are saying. I don't have much time right now but I'd really like some sort of note in the Hamilton section pointing to the External section, because these two references are very important for anyone attempting to actually use Hamilton's Principle on the computer or in real life cladistics. (Someday, this section will become its own page due to its importance in refining and correcting Darwin's classic observation of survival of the fittest.) Dear Chiswick Chap,

Trust you are well.

I just noticed that my Wikipedia biography, which you worked on and saved some years ago, has been drastically redacted (almost the whole Life and Career). Even the Education section is left with just half a sentence. To me this gives the impression of vandalism. Disturbing.

Please would you save it in a way that makes sense? I would be grateful. My fellowships etc. are available online on the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland. From Deepak Tripathi: My Wikipedia page

[edit]

Dear Chiswick Chap,

Sorry to trouble you. This is Deepak Tripathi, whose Wikipedia page you have kindly saved and improved in the past. Someone (user name: GorgeCustersSabre) has drastically edited this page about me (and selected discussions and interviews featuring me) to the extent it looks like vandalism, which is disturbing. The editor's user page suggests s/he comes from Pakistan. Information about me is widely available online – Royal Historical Society, Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland, Heriot-Watt University, Roehampton University, History News Network, CounterPunch and a variety of other sources.

This is bad. And I do not wish to do anything to the page, but may I request you (with other editors) to kindly restore it to make sense? I would be grateful. I have chosen not to have a Wikipedia account.

Kind regards, Deepak Tripathi, PhD FRHistS FRAS

ADD From Deepak Tripathi: My Wikipedia Page

[edit]

Dear Chiswick Chap,

I do not wish to get into an argument with anybody about the way whole sections were deleted on my Wikipedia page. Once a BBC News editor myself, I respect skilful editing. Let me say the following –

After the recent bout of editing, one sentence reads:

"After a year at Aligarh Muslim University,[5] he wrote a book on Afghanistan.[6][7]"

What does it mean? How are the two parts of the sentence connected? It needs context explaining why the book on Afghanistan was written and published.

As regards my education and career, how does one find "third-party sources"? I know where I studied and worked, and journalists write about others. Others do rarely write about journalists. My life and career are recorded on many sources.

I should be grateful if you could salvage the page Deepak Tripathi.

Kind regards,

Deepak Tripathi PhD FRHistS FRAS — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C5:DCA0:3D01:A841:3E6F:A7FD:427E (talk) 02:27, 3 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Deepak, this would be quite a task. It is true that 3rd party sources are needed. It is also the case that people are not advised to edit pages about themselves, as they'll have a conflict of interest. Notable people always get written about eventually, so it's probably best to wait it out. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 03:59, 3 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Satipatthana and pranayama

[edit]

Could it be that the Anapanasati Sutta actually describes a pranayama exercise? Compare Hakuin, teaching to concentrate the breath in the belly; and the Zen-practice of pushing the tongue against (uhhh...., pallatum? My English fails me), to close the inner channel so the vital energy can flow. Joshua Jonathan -Let's talk! 05:49, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Well, maybe, but speculation by Wiki-editors is ... ! Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:02, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I won't argue, but when I heard her argue for the aquatic ape on television many years ago (1970s) she mentioned Alister Hardy a lot. Athel cb (talk) 12:52, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I hear that, but it isn't even close to demonstrating a major influence on her working life. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:57, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Is it laid down somewhere that "influence" means "major influence"? I don't get the impression that most editors interpret it that way, but maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, let's leave it at that. Athel cb (talk) 16:42, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to discuss your removal of the red link to Haldane's Sieve in the InfoBox. I don't disagree with that, and in fact I almost did the same myself, but I'd like to comment. This entry in the InfoBox was not new: I suppose I could find out from the History who put it there, and when (but it wasn't me). I agree that there shouldn't be red links in the InfoBox, so why did I leave it? When I was new to editing Wikipedia a couple of years ago I started unlinking red links if I couldn't find a way to make them blue, but I was told by more experienced editors that I shouldn't do that, as they might have articles written in the future. I was only half convinced by that, but now I mainly unlink red links only in cases where it seems very unlikely that there will ever be an article. In the case of Haldane's Sieve I very much hope that there will be an article, as it's clearly needed. Ideally it should be written by Joe Felsenstein or someone equally expert, but if that doesn't happen I may do it myself. Athel cb (talk) 16:57, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It turns out that the red link is more recent that I guessed: it was added by Foiled circuitous wanderer on 3rd February 2022. Athel cb (talk) 17:08, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not quite sure what the point of discussion is if we don't disagree; violent agreement is not a thing worth spending much time on. Well, redlinks are useful if and only if (as the logicians say) they represent something that is definitely notable, has a realistic prospect of becoming an article, and is an appropriate stimulus to other editors. I'm actually not at all sure about any of the three in this case, as Haldane is more of a specialist subject these days, and his 'sieve' is more of a curiosity of evolutionary genetics than a life-changing CRISPR discovery really. If you are so keen on it, feel free to research, write, and cite it; fwiw I think you've said about all that's worth saying already. I feel rather the same about the fields in the infobox - if they're so vital, then the facts they mention should already have been cited in the article text. If nobody could be bothered to write and cite them, then it's not easy to see why we should shove the cart before the horse and populate the infobox with doubtfully-notable materials. Basically there should be *nothing* in the infobox that isn't already reliably cited, as the full policy applies there as everywhere else, and yes I know the policy is weasel-rich, so if you want proof that someone's challenged it in this case, well, yes I now have. Draft:Yoga and Consciousness

[edit]

Hi Chiswick Chap. Hope you are keeping well. I observe that you have interest in yoga related articles. Can you please guide me on improving this article for moving to main space or let me know the corrections as per Wikipedia policy for any corrections to be done. Will be obliged to you. Thanks in advance. Gardenkur (talk) 06:36, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Gardenkur, thank you for asking. I am not involved in the Articles for Creation process, so I guess I can speak freely about the article beyond the narrow confines of policy. There are both small and large issues with the proposed text.

On the very small side, punctuation goes before citations, so we should have ".[1][2]" not "[1][2]." as standard practice. Small, too, is the need for spacing, so "mind),pratyahara" needs a space after the comma, while "In meditating brain,it" should be "In the meditating brain, it ", and so on. And "Consciousnes which" should be "Consciousness which". Note too that article titles and section headings should have a capital letter only at the start.

On the larger issues, I think there are major two things to say, and I hope neither will come across as anything other than constructive, in the hope of improving the article.

Firstly, neither "Yoga" nor "Consciousness" can really be said to be introduced and defined in terms that a general (think Western, but this should be global: at least, not purely Indian subcontinent) audience can appreciate and understand.

  • At the moment, "Yoga" is assumed by the article to mean "classical yoga", perhaps based on the Patanjali model; this is not, to risk stating the obvious, the sense in which the word "Yoga" is taken by much of the world today.
  • As for "Consciousness", if you read the article of that name (which you have overlinked in the lead section), you will see that it is defined as "sentience or awareness of internal and external existence", which is not, I suspect, the sense in which you are employing the word in the article. You seem in fact to have something approaching a definition in 'History and Objective', with your "universal existence called Consciousness" - i.e. consciousness is defined spiritually or religiously as some kind of universal entity or substance that pervades everything that exists: this approaches the Western idea of a deity. You might need to work on that carefully as it is the foundation of the article.

Secondly, as the question of the definition of consciousness may suggest, the article's focus is on a spiritual or religious matter, not one of physical or mental state fundamentally. The article's title might perhaps be "Classical yoga and the raising of spiritual consciousness" or something of that sort: a difficult thing to express in a few words.

  • That in turn means that the whole article comes across as a spiritual document, a religion summarized from the inside, rather as if a Roman Catholic had written Silent meditation and the raising of Christ consciousness, entirely from the perspective of that particular world's beliefs, insights, and practices. For example, "Consciousnes which is experienced in Transcendental or Turiya state or Soul Consciousness is experienced when we experience meditation in deep or in highest state of silence." I wonder what the non-Yoga reader might make of that? They certainly won't have heard of the Turiya state, nor will they see why "Transcendental state" = "Soul consciousness". They won't appreciate, either, why that paragraph says "experienced" three times, twice indeed in the quoted sentence.
  • So, an introductory line like "Following states are believed to be different state of Consciousness[19][20][21]" begs a series of questions. Believed by whom? Who says the following states exist? What kind of existence is that, if they aren't described by neurophysiology at all? Clearly, a context for all this is currently missing.
  • Also missing is, as I've hinted, any kind of external commentary on "yoga and consciousness". You cite, for example, the New York Times, but far from providing any sort of independent view of the matter, the article turns out to be by the CEO of Kripalu Center which is both within yoga and highly partisan in its opinions and practices, though at least its mission is to present a yoga which is not merely asana practice to the West. Your article begins with a sensible section heading, "History and objective", which I understand to imply a correct intention to set "yoga and the raising of consciousness" in context; it is unfortunate that its connection to the outside world (via the IVC of 4500 years ago) is not well-founded, and that the remaining three sentences do little to explain to the reader what the context might be. It would be better to begin around the actual time of yoga's origins, perhaps the 2nd century BC, and to say something of the history of spiritual practice in India, a time when both the Buddha and then Patanjali (to name but two leading figures) created their own accounts of what they believed to be effective practices.
  • External commentary seems to be hinted at, too, in the paragraph "In meditating brain,it is believed that it was shown through Magnetic Resonance Imaging and PET scans and other scientific experiences,of improvement in neuronal mass or cortical brain and good levels of brain site networking improving its effectiveness in working[17][18]." This is far too sudden; there should be a whole section on "Reception" or "Scientific evaluation" or some such heading, and it should explain, from reliable sources, what evidence there is for the claims of the effect of yoga or meditation. Actually it almost looks as if you are here writing "Yoga = Meditation" - is that what you mean? You seem not quite to think that as you mention also Pranayama, Hatha Yoga, Kriya Yoga, Asanas, and Chanting of Mantras - there is evidently a problem of definition here. Perhaps it would be useful to set out Patanjali's Ashtanga (eight limbs of yoga), and to document from reliable sources how each of these contributes to doing something to the brain, if that's what you mean to do --- but I don't at all see the connection between "spiritual consciousness" and "neuronal mass", I'd not have thought these had anything to do with each other, other than that they could both be related to different and incompatible usages of the word "consciousness", i.e. this looks like a muddle.

That brings me to the question of WP:RS, reliable sources. I am afraid that the likes of ETHealthworld.com and Yoga Basics and Financial Express (!) and so on are a wolf's farsakh away from proper scholarly sources for a yoga article. I'm afraid to say that almost all the citations in the article are unsuitable, sorry but there it is, we do demand better on this WikiProject.

Among a few other details that caught my eye, the evidence for yoga's origin in the Indus Valley Civilisation, and the associated 4500 years, is very weak, and has essentially been dismissed by scholars. The matter is covered at Pashupati seal; the conclusion must be that it is not acceptable to assert that yoga began at that time, as the chance of it having done so is extremely slight.

The lead section is very short, and does not summarize the article's text adequately; but it would be best to leave that task until the text is stable.

I hope these thoughts are of some help, and that you will not feel too disappointed by the detailed remarks. The task of objectively researching an article for a global encyclopedia is an onerous one, and it can be especially difficult when one is personally invested in a subject, and indeed has knowledge and experience of it. The way the world sees it, however, may be very different from one's own experience.

All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:10, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chiswick Chap. Thanks and really sorry as I noticed your reply very late. I will try my best to improve as per your detailed guidance above. Its only an attempt to showcase how various limbs of Ashtanga Yoga helps us to improve awareness or consciousness. As I noticed your name helping improve Yoga related articles so was my attempt to reach you. However I will revisit as per your guidelines. Thanks a ton and hope to work with you in the interest of Wikipedia

Hi Chiswick Chap. Hope you are keeping well. Thanks for your guidance earlier in this article and I made most of the corrections and proceeded as you guided adding more references from scientific and traditional world. Could you please have a quick look on content when time permits you. Other grammar related will correct myself. Thanking you in advance. Gardenkur (talk) 01:54, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Anything more needed? LittleJerry (talk) 14:37, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Given the rather "new" state of the article, I was hoping (per the above) that you'd step back and take a careful look at the text, its balance, coverage, and (especially) the citations, so that we can go forwards with confidence when we're ready. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:45, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at the text that was left over from before you. I can't tell if cite 19 fully supports the first part of the third paragraph of "Electrophysiology". Particularly "When an electric eel identifies prey, its brain sends a signal to the main organ..."
Not really. Now cited to Kramer. Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:24, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Should we also restore the "Bionics" subsection? LittleJerry (talk) 21:43, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK... rewritten it without the sales talk and with a bit more detail! They went a bit further in their next paper, and then seemingly gave up.
Are we now ready to go? Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:57, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think so. LittleJerry (talk) 21:42, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Christopher Lee

[edit]

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Christopher Lee you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Realmaxxver -- Realmaxxver (talk) 21:20, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

BlueMoonset - some more weeks have now passed with no activity... Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:16, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Chiswick Chap, it's been a month since Realmaxxver posted any new review text, and two weeks since they said they'd post something new in a week. They've not been active lately. Under the circumstances, it seems reasonable that a second opinion request could be made in the hopes that someone would be willing to complete the review. (Reviews do tend to sit at second opinion for weeks, so this doesn't tend to be a fast option, unfortunately.) BlueMoonset (talk) 15:41, 28 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK, added a request note. Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:09, 28 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ardha Chandrasana

[edit]

Hi! I saw your comment on my additions to the lead section fo the ardha chandrasana page. I had seen additional context being provided on origin and history of pose on some asana pages like Natarajasana. However, I see your point - we essentially should not be including "how to" for the pose in the lead section, correct? Would brief sentence on origin or history be okay? I've seen that on a few asana pages. Thank you for your guidance thus far! Whitestar12 (talk) 20:23, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for asking. The lead should always be a summary of the article's contents. It should therefore never introduce new concepts or new citations. When an asana article has a significant section on history, there should be a summary of that history in the lead. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk)•
Understood, thank you so much! Whitestar12 (talk) 03:57, 24 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Chakrasana

[edit]

Hi! I saw your comment regarding the counter poses & prep poses on the Chakrasana page ("actually I'm not at all sure that preparatory and counter poses are on topic for each asana, this needs thought") - I just wanted to better understand what you were thinking regarding this information? Do you think it may not be relevant for every asana but only select asanas? Whitestar12 (talk) 02:15, 8 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for asking. I was wondering whether we should do it at all, as we aren't a "how to" guide. But it seems innocent enough. We must take care not to copy the structure and content of any source, and we're in some danger of doing that with YJ. Chiswick Chap (talk) 03:03, 8 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting point. I had thought of it to be more factual information regarding the pose/ asana... in other words, a counterpose for pose A is pose B. Agree with you on the point regarding verbiage and paraphrasing (and ensuring the structure of the content is not copied). I believe YJ just lists the poses; however, I think we have a good opportunity to present the information in a didactic manner that is unique in structure. Thanks for the guidance, always. Whitestar12 (talk) 13:32, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK, yes, I think we're about all right with it. Best will be to use a variety of reliable sources (YJ + an established book...) for additions. Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:54, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chiswick Chap, thanks for looking over this. I have questions about the recent edit to Species, mostly citing Mr. Mishler--does the content merit inclusion or is it fringe? For what it's worth, I've opened a COI report. Cheers, 2601:19E:4180:6D50:0:0:0:6BB1 (talk) 03:41, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Mishler is not fringe, and is actually clearly notable, but it's a shame about the evident CoI and the dreadful CV/promo style (now already much improved by a bit of judicious chopping). I'll edit Species now, I'd say the material is nowhere near as big as the person adding it thinks it is, and Darwin said as much back in the 19th century... while the Brent Mishler article needs to be rewritten with proper sources. Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:49, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be willing to work with you to bring that article to FAC. How about it? LittleJerry (talk) 22:11, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'll get to it later this upcoming week. Busy with things IRL. LittleJerry (talk) 18:04, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
LittleJerry: Well it's looking much more substantial, though I'm not convinced the sections are in the right sequence order, feel free to rearrange. The reviewer you suggested did what I hope will be his last-ever review of anything I've edited a while back, so if you could find someone else it'd be appreciated. Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:53, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, well I think we can improve on our paraphrasing, avoid doing this. LittleJerry (talk) 21:42, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free if you think so. I'd point out that the sources are long and detailed, and we never use more than a few words. Those are mainly terms of art - there aren't a lot of synonyms for 'electric organ discharge'. I'll run it through Turnitin just in case. Chiswick Chap (talk) 04:12, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
LittleJerry: Done that. Turnitin finds? ... No violation, 0.0%. How about that. Use search engine/Use links in page finds exactly one match from the Hal archives: ... the title of Williamson's paper. I think we may be, ahem, all right on that front. I'd be curious to know why you were concerned? Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:14, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
After Molehill reviewed me for GA, I felt there was room for improvement on paraphrasing. Anyway, is there information on research in the 20th and 21st centuries? LittleJerry (talk) 18:39, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
LittleJerry I see. The 20th and 21st centuries are covered in the body of the article, i.e. the sections on "Anatomy" (though it's a Description that includes growth and lifespan ...) and Electrophysiology, not to mention the phylogeny and species descriptions ... Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:44, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
LittleJerry: I really can't see how a functional discipline like Electrophysiology can be thought to be part of a purely structural thing like anatomy. Electrophysiology is about how things work electrically and indeed electrochemically; anatomy, meaning "cutting up" is purely about physical structure. They are at the same level: one is not a child of the other. Also problematic is the orphaned subsection, and the inclusion of age and lifespan under "Anatomy". It just looks a mess, indeed a straightforward mistake, as it is. Chiswick Chap (talk) 03:16, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, but can't we name the section "Anatomy and physiology". I feel like these things go together. Also is there any information on breeding and lifecycle? I added lifespan to behavior and renamed it "behavour and lifecycle". LittleJerry (talk) 14:45, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
LittleJerry: Thanks, well, that would be slightly less disastrous. I'm fairly allergic to the use of "and" in headings as it always looks as if (and often means) there's confusion about the section's subject. Why don't we just call the description of the animal's biology "Description" or indeed "Biology"? I don't see that you moved anything or renamed anything either, by the way: maybe you exited without saving. On breeding (dogs?) and lifecycle, as on ecology and other aspects, rather little is known about the two new species, and anything written about E. electrophorus pre-2019 (sensu lato) may be about that species (sensu stricto) or may not; I think that's best handled in the article on that species really. Maybe we can say something to that effect. But if you feel like researching something at the level of the genus on lifecycle, etc, then feel free: I think you will run straight into the difficulty I've just mentioned. That doesn't mean I don't agree that it might be desirable, nor that the chapter and section structure couldn't be improved (it's evidently uncomfortable). I'd certainly prefer to see constructive additions of materials from post-2019 research. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:54, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh my mistake. LittleJerry (talk) 15:04, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. As I say, we can certainly restructure the article, and if sections are missing, go ahead and add them. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:06, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
LittleJerry: Um, no, phylogeny is an account of evolutionary history, and taxonomy is an attempt to classify a group to reflect that history: not the other way around. Chiswick Chap (talk) 21:00, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The species section is framed like a taxonomy list and contains information on their internal phylogeny. It fits more with the top sections. LittleJerry (talk) 21:21, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it's a multilayered section, and of course it came from the same paper. I'll move it. Chiswick Chap (talk) 05:44, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Before we list it for FAC, is there any text at is left over from before you worked on it. We can't assume that they would reflect the sources accurately. LittleJerry (talk) 18:49, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Good point. We can both have a look at what was there before and check the quality. BTW when we're ready, I'd like to do the nom.
LittleJerry: The version 'before me'. It includes some seven refs still in the article, we've lost all the news items. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:07, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. I think we should look through them to be safe. LittleJerry (talk) 19:33, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely. Both of us (as I just said) should do it our separate ways, to be safer. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:36, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
LittleJerry: Well, I've gone through it all, and fixed several mistakes. How about you? Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:06, 24 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, then I think we're ready. I think you should do the honors since you wrote most of it. LittleJerry (talk) 18:17, 24 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
LittleJerry: what did you look at? You found no issues? Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:38, 24 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You said you went through all of it? LittleJerry (talk) 19:26, 24 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
LittleJerry: Yes, and I asked you to do the same yesterday... and now I've discovered my feelings of caution were justified (see below), and would be grateful if you'd give it a careful scan, or get someone else to do so if you can't. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:30, 24 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about that. I missed that message. LittleJerry (talk) 19:55, 24 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I just read it through again and realised the lead was too short: I've extended it quite a bit. Maybe you could look at that and see if it's now right. I think we're rather rushing into this: I shall wait a bit and maybe we can both take a look at it again 'in slow time'. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:04, 24 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay then. There are other things I'd like to take care of in the meantime. LittleJerry (talk) 19:56, 24 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Usage in camouflage articles and notability

[edit]

Hi CC,

I’d like your take on describing the usage of various military camouflage patterns on their respective articles. I’ve always been under the impression that in the interests of summarization, we should restrict this sort of descriptions to b) national armies, and b) major political-military factions involved in an armed conflict. Personally, I don’t believe that we need to describe the use of these patterns by every last private non-state actor and entity but wanted more opinions on this. What are your thoughts? Katangais (talk) 10:42, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for asking. I haven't worked on military patterns for some years now (and am not minded to), but you must be right, the notability rules are the same here as everywhere else. If some minor group borrow a bit of MARPAT and pairs it with dark sunglasses and blue training shoes, that's notable, right? Of course it isn't. We require at least one reliable source for a mention (in an article on some broader subject, such as a list of patterns), and multiple reliable sources, independent of the group in question, for an article. If not, we delete. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 11:03, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That was my thinking precisely. There is an ongoing discussion about this revision of Rhodesian Brushstroke. I deleted it because there is only one specific faction or entity cited - called the "Atomwaffen Division", and it has fewer than 100 members in its country of origin (United States). The counterargument being made is that this insignificant, tiny criminal organization is just as notable as national governments and major guerrilla factions with thousands of members that were active belligerents in African wars. I disagree wholeheartedly. The use of the brushstroke pattern by a mostly localized criminal organizations this small and politically insignificant is not notable. --Katangais (talk) 21:01, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The issue is, as always, the sources available. Chiswick Chap (talk) 01:43, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Shark cladogram

[edit]

In the meantime, could you create a new shark cladograph using this? It's basically the same as File:Extant Shark Orders (illustrated).png expect Hexanchiformes is basal to Squaliformes etc. Just label the two major clades and the eight orders (for Squalimorphii, Hexanchus = Hexanchiformes; Squatina = Squatiniformes; Pristiophorus = Pristiophoriformes and the rest is Squaliformes). Floral tribute

[edit]

I was just wondering, shortly after midnight, whether Armitage had yet written anything ... googled and found that the poem was published in the Guardian at 00:01 today, along with the accompanying article, so that was perfect timing. Seem to have done it OK even though on phone at the time. The "last1" etc seems to be what the RefToolBar system adds by default, and that's how I do refs (even on phone, though it's a bit tricky). I wondered about linking to the "Death of ..." article: no strong feelings either way. The poem probably deserves a mention in that article, come to thnk of it ... Invisible sfn errors ...

[edit]

Hi, I see you're busy suppressing "sfn errors" in things I've edited, like Barad-dûr for instance; but I get no visible intimation of anything actually wrong. Can you tell me a) how you're seeing these things (and what the "error" might be), b) why they happen? I've not done anything strange that I know of... and c) how to stop it at source, because you are fixing one instance after another (symptomatically, not root cause). Clearly a single one-off fix would be much preferable. Many thanks, Chiswick Chap 19:16, 9 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi Chiswick Chap, I agree that a systematic fix would be better in this case. The error is a "harv/sfn no-target error", which makes the article show up in this category. There is an error message, but it's suppressed by default because there are so many false positives (like these ones...) There are instructions for enabling the display of the error messages at the top of the category page, and also a link to a pair of javascript scripts that detect actual errors. Since you work a lot with sfn references you probably want to have the script anyway, and the css change that displays the error messages is good for spotting false positives.
The cause of the "error" is that the error checking code in the module that implements harv/sfn isn't able to detect a reference if it's wrapped inside a template – it can't resolve the template back to the encapsulated {{cite book}} or similar. I think that the best solution in this case is to add your reference templates to the global whitelist. You can do that by making a request here – see mine at the bottom of the page from a few weeks ago as an example. It can be a bit slow, though, because it needs a template editor to make the changes and not many of them seem to watch that page. Best, Wham2001 10:36, 10 September 2022 (UTC)
Many thanks! Chiswick Chap 11:06, 10 September 2022 (UTC)

Example: ['CITEREFTolkien1954'] = template_names['ME-ref'], Example: ['CITEREFTonks1988'] = {'Tonks ironstone'},

Further earnest advice: Fixing Harv/sfn error. Please watchlist Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors, and also install either User:Svick/HarvErrors.js or User:Trappist the monk/HarvErrors.js to help you spot such errors when reading or editing. --- script is installed.

Please add the following to the Footnotes module whitelist:
['CITEREFTolkien1954a'] = template_names['ME-ref']
['CITEREFShippey2005'] = template_names['ME-ref']

Please correct the Footnotes module whitelist:
['CITEREFTolkienSwan1978'] = template_names['ME-ref'] ...should read... ['CITEREFTolkienSwann1978'] = template_names['ME-ref']

These were submitted 16 Sept 2022.

Will nominate some of your articles

[edit]

Greetings Chiswick Chap, I would like to nominate some more of your recent Good Articles, as I found them to be very interesting. I'm thinking of Sundering of the Elves and either Amritasiddhi or Yoga nidra, depending on which of the latter yields the better hook. I wanted to let you know in advance, and also clarify that I will address any issues that arise during the nomination; it was unfair to burden you with it on Isildur. I will only contact you if there is anything that I absolutely can't do myself (e.g. for lack of sources). Revert edit in Abiogenesis

[edit]

Hi Chiswick Chap, may I ask you why your last edit on Abiogenesis was a reversion wherein an interesting contribution was deleted/reverted. It states that "LUCA find that it was not a thermophile but rather a mesophile" with reference to work of Patrick Forterre, who is an authority in this field. The text that was reverted stated also that LUCA might have been an heterotroph rather than an autotroph. I just happen to note your revert and I am sorry the text is not visible anymore in the article. It might have been an edit from Patrick Forterre himself or from Koonin. The text you reverted is in this version Thank you Phacelias (talk) 07:13, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Phacelias: Thank you for asking. The reason is that the material is in LUCA and doesn't need to be repeated bodily (some might say "spammed") into multiple articles: the coverage of LUCA in Abiogenesis is a brief summary, and must necessarily be far shorter than the LUCA article itself, and cited to fewer sources. Abiogenesis is already a long article at the top of a substantial tree of articles, i.e. there is a hierarchy of "main" or "further" articles branching off from many of its sections, so obviously it is not appropriate to try to describe every change in every detail in every subsection at this high level. If you consider that the edit reflects a really important change, which sounds plausible, then you should make the smallest possible modification to the lead (summary) section of LUCA (to reflect the material added further down in that article), and then reflect that summary change in Abiogenesis, which I certainly won't oppose. On the edit's authorship, obviously we have no knowledge of who the IP may have been; nor are we necessarily keen to encourage people to report their own work as that brings a variety of issues along with it. WP linking

[edit]

Hi CC, WP doesn't link common terms like 'pantomime' and 'firefighters'. That's not what linking is for. It's not a dictionary. Please seeWP:NOT. Not sure why you reverted. 'First instance' of what Anna (talk) 18:27, 8 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

First instance of the terms in the main text, as opposed to the lead. If a topic is considered important enough to justify a whole Wikipedia article, it certainly seems reasonable to link it. And "common" to whom? I am far from sure that "pantomime" will be intuitively obvious to all readers, especially if English isn't their first language; and the topic is clearly going to be more intelligible with a link to that article. On the title-page of the 2017 publication it states explicitly: 'Revised and expanded edition'. In comparison to the 2006 publication several hundred pages have been added and the edition has gone up from 2 to 3 volumes. Though the titles are the same one cannot say they are the same publications. This counts also for the page 'Christina Scull'.

Thank you for the rescue, and today also for Electric eel, "recently found to be a genus with three species, but long studied by science as a unique and remarkable species; its study advanced understanding of electricity as well as of physiology"! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:44, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Martin Rundkvist

[edit]

Hello! Regarding the article about me -- I've published a report on last year's excavations at Aska, which brought the total number of gold foil figures to at least 30. I've also got four new papers in high-profile journals, if you want to have a look. Can I send you some PDFs? Best, Martin Rundkvist (talk) 10:25, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Dukes Meadows

[edit]

On 4 December 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Dukes Meadows, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a 1902 plan called for a town to be built in Dukes Meadows that would have been known as Burlingwick? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Dukes Meadows. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Dukes Meadows), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

I have developed a template that uses your diagram as a basis for an <image map> which overlays it with clickable links for each document. The template is at User:Verbarson/leg, and it can be seen in use at User:Verbarson/sandbox#Template, duplicating the way it is presented in three articles. It has two parameters: upright controls the size of display (default 2), and caption supplies the caption (also having a default value).

The links used are mostly obvious. The link for 'Later Quenta, Annals' points to The War of the Jewels, which is only one of the three volumes involved. The 'Other Materials' are also linked to relevant articles, and the overall image, where not otherwise linked, is linked to the original image in Commons. This reflects the current user experience, but I am not sure it is the best solution: it may be better to link to Tolkien's legendarium, or to omit a 'background' link entirely. Your suggestions on all of these issues are welcome.

I wonder whether you are intending, at any point, to add Unfinished Tales to the diagram? Also, near the foot, the HoME caption has 1..XII, where you may have intended I..XII. If the diagram is changed, the template will have to be edited to match any new or altered positions; this is a tedious but not difficult job that I am happy to undertake. -- Verbarson  talkedits 23:31, 3 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Verbarson: 1) Thank you, good idea. 2) The links seem to be fine (there's no obvious solution for the Later Quenta, Annals link), and the background link to the image is correct. 3) UT wasn't mentioned by the sources; in truth, it isn't really a 'book', just bits and bobs from the Legendarium, so it doesn't have a place in the diagram. 4) Feel free to install the template in the 3 places where it is used. 5) I'll fix the 1 -> I text now. Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:26, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for correcting the Quenta Noldorinwa link.
I note that you have updated the '1' to 'I'; I can see the new version in Commons. However, wherever the template is used - all three articles, and three times in my sandbox - I still see the '1'. I have purged all the pages and the template, but it does not change. How does it appear to you? Is the problem specific to me, or has the template got stuck on an older version of the diagram? If so, how can I update it? -- Verbarson  talkedits 18:06, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Answer: it is picking up the file from en.wiki, not commons.
I want to pick up this version.
What I am getting is this one, which despite the File History, does not have the update. (I have tried purging that page - no change.)
I cannot see any way of specifying the correct version in the image 'File:' link. I assume the page renderer checks en.wiki first, then tries commons if nothing was found. Can the en.wiki version be removed, or at least renamed? -- Verbarson  talkedits 18:28, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Verbarson: You need to purge your browser's cache, then it will reload the image(s).
For instance on Firefox it's Settings / Privacy & Security / Cookies and Site Data / Clear data ... / Cached Web Content (Will require websites to reload images and data) / Clear. (No doubt some software bunny thought that was easy.) Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:08, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you - it is now displaying as expected. (Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data) -- Verbarson  talkedits 19:40, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Verbarson: Would it be possible to make the yellowish area "Incomplete Time-travel Novels" (a rectangle that wraps around two brown book boxes) point to J. R. R. Tolkien's explorations of time travel? Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:30, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly. It's done. -- Verbarson  talkedits 21:30, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Having read the article in question, I am surprised that no source has brought up Puck of Pook's Hill and its sequel, where two children are very explicitly enchanted (by "the oldest Old Thing in England" using Oak, Ash and Thorn) and taken - if not into the past, then into the presence of the past. One story, 'Dymchurch Flyt', even tells of the 'Pharisees' leaving across the sea. -- Verbarson  talkedits 22:27, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Tolkien seems never to have mentioned Kipling, as I've recorded Shippey saying in Trees and forests in Middle-earth. He must surely have read Kipling, and the two men certainly shared a view of Englishness. Beyond that, it's hard to say. Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:14, 6 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You reverted my edit to Yoga Journal (YJ) citing a link you gave, which you didn't even look at: 'subscribe' redirects to the new owner's website and to subscriptions for only their magazine, 'Outside', which is all YJ subscribers received after this May. Go to any subscription service: Amazon.com, or any other magazine subscription reseller, and they all say it's discontinued! Please check more before you revert!--dchmelik☀️🦉🐝🐍(talk|contrib) 07:18, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Er, you didn't cite anything, so it was properly reverted. I then immediately checked the YJ website in multiple places and found the citation which I put there, yesterday. Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:00, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Black Speech

[edit]

On 11 December 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Black Speech, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that it was J. R. R. Tolkien's intention for Black Speech to be "full of harsh and hideous sounds and vile words"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Black Speech. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Black Speech), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. So sorry!

[edit]

I am so sorry for stomping on your edits to the Ediacaran biota § Lichen hypothesis. After a quick "oh no" second, I was in the midst of trying to sort out and restore your edits. But when I went to submit your changes, I discovered that you had yet again made your changes while I was editing.

And by the way, I thought your edits improved the neutral point of view.

At this point, I'm rattled enough that I'm going to just keep my hands off. All I was trying to do was clean up the citations.

How to get Igor Kufayev to GA

[edit]

a very good day to you, @Chiswick_Chap, Since you seem to be knowledgeable about classical Yoga, and keen to bring pages to good standing, I was wondering if you could offer some overall constructive guidance of the pathway to bring the Igor Kufayev page to GA status. I’ve been in several workshops of Igor Kufayev and that’s what allows me to contribute from personal experience, after all this page is about a living person, and an accuracy of information can only be provided by those who have direct knowledge of the subject, while observing Wikipedia’s guidelines for authenticity of information. I feel that you may be willing to not just deconstruct this page, but actually give some guidance how to construct it into a worthy page. If you happen to be in Brussels, Mechelen or Antwerp, I’m up for a coffee, it’ll be my treat, I'm happy to speak about this in a genuine conversation. I'm specifically interested how to add content in good faith and with respect for the subject at hand. Thank you for any constructive suggestions. Geertacke (talk) 22:47, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for asking. Wikipedia does not allow personal knowledge to be used as the rest of us can't verify it. So, you must use reliably published sources like newspapers, textbooks, and academic journals. We can use Kufayev himself only for basic facts, e.g. his place of birth. We can't use his organisation either, other than to report basic facts like he lives in city X. Nor can we quote art critics at flowing length, this is not a sales pitch. GA? The article is a wolf's farsakh from that at rhe moment. Chiswick Chap (talk) 02:53, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Coccinellidae

[edit]

On 28 December 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Coccinellidae, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that certain Coccinellidae species (example pictured) lay extra infertile trophic eggs along with their fertile eggs so that their larvae can have a backup food source? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Coccinellidae. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Coccinellidae), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hello (and question about Acton)

[edit]

Dropping by briefly to see how things are going and to ask a couple of questions. Apart from the architecture article I see above, what would be the latest Middle-earth writings I might peruse? Have you seen any of the Rings of Power? (I haven't seen the last two episodes of Season 1, so no spoilers!) And unrelated to Tolkien (though I have been watching the talks from Oxonmoot 2022 recently, some of which are excellent) I had a question about Acton and the listed church there (St Mary's Church, Acton, London). An article I wrote recently (OK, the only article I have written recently) is at Robert Adair (surgeon). And a nice little memorial is in that church, so I might pop in and try and get a photo. If it is open at reasonable hours! (Oh, and if the memorial survived as I see the church was rebuilt. Oops.) Are you familiar with that church? Am trying to picture what the environs would have been like in the 1760s and 1770s! Very, um, Georgian London, I suppose. Carcharoth (talk) 14:30, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The GAN queue seems to be getting very slow, but Dragons, Noldor, Black Speech, and (extremely slowly) Christopher Lee have all squeezed through the eye of the needle. And Sundering of the Elves, a complex topic. It's the central church in Acton; I think it's usually locked so turning up before a service might be the best bet! The current building looks uniformly 1860s so it's hard to know which fixtures and fittings may have survived. The article says the tower was not demolished, so, as at St Nicholas Church, Chiswick, memorials there may remain in situ. In the 1760s Acton was a small village surrounded by orchards and scattered farms. (Had a quick look; by 1866, Middlesex Sheet XVI, there are still orchards and open fields with hedges all around, but the railway has arrived, and rows of houses have started to spring up.) All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:03, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Not like Numenor, then! :-) Carcharoth (talk) 15:17, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
