You don't need to read anything - anybody can edit; just go to an article and edit it. Be Bold, but please don't put silly stuff in - it will be removed very quickly, and will annoy people.

Ask for help. Talk to us live, or edit this page, put {{helpme}} and describe what help you need. Someone will reply very quickly - usually within a few minutes.

Play in your user area. For example, create User:Foothiller/test.

Edit existing articles, before you make your own. Look at some subjects that you know about, and see if you can make them a bit better. For example, Wikipedia:Cleanup#2009.

When you're ready, read about Your first article. It should be about something well-known, and it will need references.

My revert

Hi, and welcome. But I reverted your contribution at golden ratio, as I found it pretty much uninterpretable, mostly unsourced, and largely off-topic (related instead to Golden mean (philosophy)). We watch this article pretty closely, as it has been a magnet for nonsense over the years. If what you want to add is sourced, relevant, and sensible, tell us about it on Talk:Golden ratio. I'm writing to you in response to your bewilderment expressed here. :)
The blue "talkback" box left for you above means that Meiskam has left you a response, which you can find at his talkpage in the "Foothiller" section.
You are right that your addition to the Golden ratio article was removed. You can always check out who changed what by clicking the history tab at the top of every page, reading the comments there. In this case, Dicklyon undid your change, and even left you an explanation above. From a glance at your change I think it makes sense what he said, that it was a bit off-topic and the information would fit in better at Golden mean (philosophy). I'm not an expert though, if we both got it wrong and you find that it still should be added to Golden ratio, then I would ask you to start a discussion at Talk:Golden ratio, e.g. by clicking here.
Wikipedia can be very confusing for a new editor. There's lots going on, lots of conventions, and lots to read, as you said. However, as Mesikam said, you can ignore all that in the beginning, use your common sense, and just boldly edit away, and you'll pick it up as you go.
If you have questions, feel very free to ask, and most people will be happy to help.
