User talk:Grm wnr/Archive
And since I too have something against empty pages...
Hello and welcome to Wikipedia!
Here are some tips to help you get started:
- If you haven't already, please add your name to the new user log to let others know a little about yourself.
- Read the article describing how to edit a page and feel free to experiment in the Sandbox.
- When editing pages, use the preview button before submitting and try to fill in the summary box for every edit.
- Eventually, read the Manual of Style and Policies and Guidelines.
- If you need help, post a question at the Help Desk or ask me on my talk page.
- Explore, be bold in editing pages, and, most importantly, have fun!
Good luck!
Jrdioko
P.S. One last helpful hint. To sign your posts like I did above (on talk pages, for example) use the '~' symbol. To insert just your name, type ~~~ (3 tildes), or, to insert your name and timestamp, use ~~~~ (4 tildes).
Bah!
[edit]I just noticed your edits on Puni Puni Poemi.... I was planning to try and have a big go at the page at some point. Looks like someone beat me to it!!!! :( - Xgkkp 21:08, 9 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- feel free to work on it some more - the page is by no means perfect now. - Grm wnr 13:19, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- I know, I wasn't being serious :)... - Xgkkp 16:44, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

- I'm willing, but I can't promise that I will have time for it in the next two weeks. Also, I'm not very familiar with the subject and it IS a daunting task... Sounds like Wikipedia. Count me in 8) --Grm wnr 23:39, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Your signature...

<span style="font-family:monospace"> [[User:Grm_wnr|grm]]_[[User_talk:Grm_wnr|wnr]]</span> <span style="border:1px solid black;font-size:x-small"><span style="background-color:white"> </span><span style="background-color:yellow"> </span><span style="background-color:cyan"> </span><span style="background-color:limegreen"> </span><span style="background-color:magenta"> </span><span style="background-color:red"> </span><span style="background-color:blue"> </span><span style="background-color:black"> </span></span>
And all this to get a freaking colored bar?! Here's a PNG, free of charge: . Sorry, it's not as clever. :-) I find it amusing that this image is smaller than the HTML that encoded its rendering on my platform. JRM 11:06, 2005 Mar 14 (UTC)

Music stubs
[edit]I'd be willing to help with music stub sorting. Where should I start? One easy thing would be to start putting all the record labels and/or instruments into your new categories; would that be the most useful? --Wahoofive 21:51, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the help! That would probably the most useful thing to do at the moment, since I've shelved my idea of genre music stubs for now. We can tackle that later. I'd suggest you start at the end of the alphabet, because I'm working from the beginning right now. Oh, and it would be nice if you could list yourself on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting page. -- grm_wnr Esc 21:58, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
OK, I've done letters Y and Z (and Ü), including three VFD nominations. Not sure what to do with Ysaÿe Quartet (a classical string quartet). Hate to call them a band; is that what you've been doing? --Wahoofive 23:58, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I'd use {{band-stub}}, since the stub message says This article on a band or other musical ensemble is a stub. By the way, I'm nearly done with A and B (I got a bit held up because I had to tweak the Categories) -- grm_wnr Esc 00:03, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Finished W and X. Not sure what to do with Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, a cantata by Bach. Hardly qualifies as a song, and there's no place to put classical compositions. Also, I'm new to this stub-sorting thing; do you find you do lots of other things during the process of sorting, like VFD, {{cleanup}}, redirects, and the like? --Wahoofive 23:06, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I'm leaving classical compositions largely in {{music-stub}} for now, unless they are really songs. And I do other tagging if it's really obvious, but probably not as thoroughly as I should. I relatively often drop a {{wikify}} or a {{copyvio}} though, and remove stub notices altogether if the article clearly is not a stub, but I tend to leave them in if the article isn't in any categories. And I never, ever use {{substub}}. I redirect when I know of a duplication, but I don't actively search for dupes. Basically, with big projects like this, I sacrifice complete tagging for speed. -- grm_wnr Esc 23:16, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I'm the one who commented out Opera-stubs, since it was questioned on the Stub-sorting-criteria page. (Also, since at first it wasn't appearing as a subcategory of music-stubs, I though maybe it had been deleted.) Since it seems there's no problem with it, it's fine that you uncommented it again. I should have done it myself. I've even been putting things in that category. Sorry. —Wahoofive | Talk 03:49, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- I think I should have checked the page history before wondering aloud. Your edit summary is perfectly clear on this one, so I should be the one to say sorry. But really, we both shouldn't ;) -- grm_wnr Esc 03:54, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)
NATO: teh b0rken
[edit]Hi Grammy, I managed to pull in all the templates on Ranks and insignia of NATO by substing them all while enclosing the substs in HTML comment markers (apparently this works fine). This rendered right away, so it is the table syntax, not the templates, that are causing problems. Right now everything is commented out. silsor 02:15, Apr 19, 2005 (UTC)
- That's cool. Did you ever test if normal HTML tables are less stressful on the servers? I think I'm going to try this out sometime soon. -- grm_wnr Esc 09:58, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, HTML tables should render very quickly. I think there are some inefficiencies with the wiki table syntax parser. silsor 20:14, Apr 19, 2005 (UTC)
Teleprompter
[edit]Hey Grammy, I just happened on your teleprompter image. Nice work, but I think the mirror in your illustration is generally called a 'one way' mirror. (Think of all those TV cops standing behind the one-way glass listening to confessions.:)Bookandcoffee 04:53, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Actually, in all prompters I've seen, that would be referred to as a "glass pane" ;). Much cheaper, and it works quite well (that's why the shroud is important). It's a holdover from the illustration I've replaced, and I think I'll change that as sooon as I find the time. -- grm_wnr Esc 08:17, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Regarding M-II/Panasonic MII
[edit]Hello Grammy, I got your messages you sent me regarding my and your articles regarding M-II and Panasonic MII, and I was thinking the exact same thing, to just merge my article with yours and give it a different name, like you suggested, and changing the aforementioned article names to redirects. Is this alright if I go ahead with this?
About the photos in my M-II article, I'll go ahead and take them down for now (with the exception of the MII logo, which I'll tag with a {{logo}}). I'll also temporarily take offline as well some photos i've used in my other articles, to prevent any copyright fracas, or deletion marking. I'll contact the original holders of the photos via e-mail to see if they're OK with myself using them in an article.
Pardon my amateurishness about the use of the photos, I thought that a "courtesy" credit would suffice. Goes to show you how much I know about copyright stipulations :P. I'm also kinda new at the whole Wikipedia thing. I've contributed and added to quite a few articles, not to brag, but I've been a member here for a little under three months, and I'm still learning new things about Wiki as I go along, especially copyright stipulations :).
But anyways, thanks for the feedback! misternuvistor 23:37, May 25, 2005 (UTC)
MII correction...
[edit]I went ahead and merged the two MII articles, it's now officially under MII (videocassette format). I went and updated all other links pointing to the old articles (now redirects) to point to the new merged article, just to neaten up things.
Oh, and thanks for taking care of the {{logo}} tag for the MII logo image, I never thought of putting it on the page for the image itself. Once again, something new I've learned... :) :).
Thanks again. misternuvistor 03:36, May 26, 2005 (UTC)

Congratulations!
[edit]Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 23:19, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Drum and bass cleanup
[edit]Hi there, thanks for adding your name to the list. I'm planning on starting an actual Wikiproject quite soon (probably next week) to clean up the drum and bass articles, if only for a place to make a comprehensive list of all the ones that need doing and suggestions (formatting, discography sources) on how to improve existing ones.
As you can tell from the small list on my page, there are a number of major figures/labels who have very small articles, and some don't have one at all. Once I start the project, I'm going to try and recruit as many people as possible. I'll drop you a line when I start the project, as I'd like to gather as many suggestions as possible. I'm also hoping to make a little logo and a template, but I don't know enough about the wiki software to do that yet. Thanks! illWill 00:22, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

- Okay, thanks. I always used text as my basis... but, not sure what I'll do, but I'll take that into account. In any case, less text should be needed for album stubs than for most if it has track list / box. gren グレン 15:25, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
Willy with 100% more wheels
[edit]How did you find this "sleeper sock"? Is there some sort of Special:Newusers-type page now? ~~ N (t/c) 14:39, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
Now blocked. If it's an innocent user, he has the worst luck in choosing user names EVER. But I'm curious, how did you find that one? He doesnÄt seem to have made any contributions yet. -- grm_wnr Esc 14:33, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
- Went through the user list, and by manually editing the offset in the address bar, found my way to the users that began with Willy, somewhere around 388,000 users in. Then looked at the ones there, mostly focusing on the ones without user pages or discussion pages. (Red links) Checked contribution lists for those, again looking for empty pages. This was the only one in that range that was so obviously a WoW puppet, and had not already been used, and had no notice in User or Talk about a preemptive block, as some others did. I'm not sure how to actually check the block status of a user. Not being an admin, I may not even have that power, which is why I worded my comment how I did.
- If I could search the user list for "*Willy*" I suspect I could find others, but for now this method is only good for catching obvious ones that start with "Willy", "Willie", or similar. TexasAndroid 14:48, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
Finding WoW sleepers
[edit]And so the great hunt for WoW sleeper socks is on. I assume you're using Kbdank71's browser search strategy to find the ones you're blocking. Happy hunting. This may, in the short term, make a major dent in the ability of the WoW clones to assault Wikipedia. In the long term, though, it's just gonna make them use less obvious names. But any calm in the storm is welcome. (Please reply here. I have it bookmarked. :) ) TexasAndroid 16:52, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I guess it's only giving us a bit of breathing space. In the long run, I'm very much hoping for a technical solution. And I'm quite sure that he has quite a few names up his sleeve that we don't find. But since he's stepping up the frequency of his attack lately, this might be very worthwhile for the time being. -- grm_wnr Esc 16:56, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

Re: Sony Mavica copyvio
[edit]Oh, thanks for catching that. My "wikify" routine usually consists of googling a portion of the article I'm working on, and that paragraph sure seemed copyvio-ish. Luck of the cursor, you might say. :) Your boldness does seems like a better result than deleting the entire article, though. By the way, how does one only delete certain revisions of an article? Just curious: I might have to do that some day. Cheers, Bratschetalk | Esperanza 02:49, September 12, 2005 (UTC)

Firefox extension
[edit]Would you happen to know how to make a firefox extension using Javascript? It would be very simple and used to fight vandalism. The basic idea is to feed RC diff's into firefox, and let it determine which pages contain text (such as an obscenity) listed in a file. For pages that don't contain anything on this list, the tab is closed. The others remain open and ready to be examined. If you can't figure out how to hookup the IRC RC output into firefox, then it could be used with WP:CDVF to open new tabs in firefox to be checked. I found a guide to making extensions, but it says you need to know Javascript. Thanks. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-10-30 03:51
Late Night Tales
[edit]I've spent a fair while on all those Late Night Tales albums, and as a relatively new user I'd not thought about making a category for 'em. Now I see it - makes total sense. Hi, I tried to add categories - Category:Aim albums and Category:Grand Central Records albums. I'm not sure what I've done exactly, but they don't seem to work. The former should contain the following: Cold Water Music Hinterland (album) Stars on 33 (Aim album) Means of Production Fabric Live 17
And the latter should contain these: Cold Water Music Hinterland (album) Means of Production The Main Event (album) Superhero Music And The Big Red Nebula Band Take My Drum To England Useless Wooden Toys Rae Road Into The Depths Northern Sulphuric Soul Sleepwalking (album) Nocturnal Activity
Maybe you could assist me, either by explaining where I've gone awry, or by creating these categories correctly for me? Cheers. Gram 00:09, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Hello; I was wondering why you used "µ" to signify stub articles in this template. I have no idea how you made this or how to change it, but it's a component in Apple Mac, which we've been trying to get to FA (be sure to vote here). I'd like you to revisit the aforementioned template and improve it. For instance, the Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh can be abbreviated TAM for short, not 20th anniv. M., which is longer than the bar representing its production time. So if you could change this and just tweak the template, we'd all appreciate it. HereToHelp (talk) 15:16, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
