AntiVandal suggestion

Hello, I would like to suggest adding a dark mode to antivandal. It would be a lot easier on the eyes. Thanks! GrayStorm(Complaints Dept.|My Contribs.) 21:53, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion, @GrayStorm! That is a feature that I'd like to add eventually, but unfortunately, I don't have a ton of time right now to work on it. I'll try to at some point, though! —Ingenuity (t • c) 23:48, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
Cool. Thats understandable that you can't work on it currently, but I look forward to seeing it when it does come out. GrayStorm(Complaints Dept.|My Contribs.) 23:53, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

I didn't want to just change the block since you seemed to have made deliberate choices with the settings, but given that the main account had talk pages access revoked, I think maybe the sock should to. We've clearly wasted more than enough time on this person. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 00:16, 18 July 2024 (UTC)

@Just Step Sideways: it looks like Scottperry only has email disabled; I just left the settings the same as JPxG's initial block. I'm not opposed to revoking their TPA, though, given that they seem on the verge of making legal threats. —Ingenuity (t • c) 00:19, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
Well, I'm dumb. He had it revoked at one point but I see now it was restored later. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 01:53, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
@Ingenuity, just to jump on this - thanks for removing the other edit summaries from his attack sock. Needless to say, I didn’t take too kindly to some of those PAs. The Kip (contribs) 02:43, 18 July 2024 (UTC)

Find shared interests

Hi! Is there a tool I can use to find Wikipedia users who have edited the same set of articles? I have read Wikipedia:Tools/User interaction investigations which is somewhat similar, but not what I want. Polygnotus (talk) 03:47, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

@Polygnotus: I actually created a tool like that, and used it on Hajer (it's a bunch of Javascript code; I can send it to you, if you like). There aren't any other users with significant overlap that the tool found, though. I also went through the history of basically every article they've edited manually, but found nothing. There is one user (AZAA23) who could be related, but they have only made two edits on enwiki. —Ingenuity (t • c) 03:54, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
If you would be so kind to send me that tool it would be greatly appreciated (you can email it or paste it on my userpage, whatever you prefer). I was thinking of writing something like that myself and sticking it on Github. In exchange I can offer the contribution list tool (press on the Show changes button here to see its output) but its not really finished yet. Without accusing anyone; I think I may have found an account that is very enthusiastic about certain well-known brands. Polygnotus (talk) 04:04, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
@Polygnotus: I've emailed you the code. It isn't super accurate, though, so treat its results with a grain of salt. —Ingenuity (t • c) 04:09, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
Interesting, thank you. For the record: there is no indication that the other user is related to Hajer-12 in any way, but they are a lot more excited about certain brands than you or I would be. Polygnotus (talk) 04:28, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

This question shouldn't be here?

Hello Ingenuity.

I just wanted to remind you that a Nothere user (now blocked) asked a question on your AntiVandal.js talk page [1]. I would like to remove it but I don't know if it will interfere with the AntiVandal script. 🛧Midori No Sora♪🛪 ( ☁=☁=✈) 04:41, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I'm not an expert on user scripts, but seeing as that is the talk page, and not the code itself, it should be fine. And anyway, you probably couldn't mess with the code even if you wanted to. Javascript pages are protected so that only the user who's subpage it is and interface admins can edit them (eg. I could edit User:GrayStorm/Lorem.js but not User:Ingenuity/Ipsum.js, however an interface admin could edit both these pages). Hope this helps! GrayStorm(Complaints Dept.|My Contribs.) 05:47, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
@GrayStorm, That's good to know! Anyways, I'll leave the message as it be and let Ingenuity decide. Cheers. 🛧Midori No Sora♪🛪 ( ☁=☁=✈) 08:24, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

IngenuityBot makes title up

It's a bit old this, but I only just noticed. In this edit the bot claimed the article was called "Former defense lawyer says drug testing should be mandatory for officers in high risk police units" but the title is in fact "Make drug testing mandatory for police in high-risk units, ex-defence lawyer says". DuncanHill (talk) 20:41, 25 August 2024 (UTC)

It looks like the article's title must have been changed after publication, and the bot fetched the old one. It doesn't really matter now, I don't plan on running the bot again any time soon. —Ingenuity (t • c) 22:10, 25 August 2024 (UTC)

Women in Green's "Around the World in 31 Days" GA Editathon – October 2024

Hello Ingenuity:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2024!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2024, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

September music

story · music · places

Thank you for common sense! - Recommended reading today: Frye Fire, by sadly missed Vami_IV. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:02, 6 September 2024 (UTC)

Happy because my story today is about a Czech mezzo soprano who is mentioned on the Main page on her birthday. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:38, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

Three stories related to today in memory, 11 September, 20 July and 20 June, the latter piece of art also pictured on the Main page. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:19, 11 September 2024 (UTC)

Today is Schoenberg's 150th birthday! On display, portrayed by Egon Schiele, with music from Moses und Aron, and with two DYK hooks, one from 2010 and another from 2014; the latter, about his 40th birthday, appeared on his 140th birthday, which made me happy then and now again. - See places for a stunning sunrise, on the day Bruckner's 200th birthday was celebrated (just a few days late). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:59, 13 September 2024 (UTC)

Spi

Hello. I saw this Spi and had some things to say. While it's possible this is one user, doesn't it appear more likely a case of having additional undisclosed accounts or simply forgetting passwords? Because the first account hasn't even edited since June, and the second one with questionable username hasn't edited since August. I think they just forgot passwords, assuming it's the same user. It's interesting I had reported a similar case of socking and while in my case it was clearly same person (as confirmed/blocked in a different project Spi), the clerk of en-wiki decided to not block the accounts because "Simply using multiple accounts, even if not disclosed, is not automatically sockpuppetry" and "evidence of misuse on this project is required".

I think this principle applies here too because I don't think there is evidence of misuse in Armen888 Spi (again assuming this is one person). And while I agree one of the usernames is problematic, is it enough to block for POV pushing all 3 users? And lastly, "native_name" additions did seem a bit excessive, but again is it enough to indeff users? It's not like they were adding it to random articles, looks like they were just adding it to Armenian articles and in several cases the actual names were already there, they just added missing templates [2]. KhndzorUtogh (talk) 10:13, 25 September 2024 (UTC)

They're welcome to make an unblock request. Armeniansarebest received a number of warnings shortly before switching their account, and Nakhararakan has denied that they are the same user (even though it's extremely obvious). This does not look like a case where they forgot their password. —Ingenuity (t • c) 20:22, 26 September 2024 (UTC)

Administrator Elections: Call for Candidates

Administrator Elections | Call for Candidates

The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Call for candidates.

Here is the schedule:

  • October 8–14 - Candidate sign-up (we are here)
  • October 22–24 - Discussion phase
  • October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase

Please note the following:

  • The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed.
  • Prospective candidates are advised to become familar with the community's expectations of adminstrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewing successful and unsuccessful RFAs, reading the essay Wikipedia:Advice for RfA candidates, and possibly requesting an optional poll on their chances of passing.
  • The process will have a one week call for candidates phase, a one week pause to set up SecurePoll, a three-day period of public discussion, followed by 7 days of no public discussion and a private vote using SecurePoll.
  • The outcomes of this process are identical to making requests for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA or administrator elections.
  • Administrator elections are also a valid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.

Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. A separate user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.

To avoid sending too many messages, this will be the last mass message sent about administrator elections. If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.

Armen888 SPI

Since this SPI is closed, I was wondering if I should file a new SPI due to an IP editing(46.71.234.8) along the same articles as users Armen888, Armeniansarebest, and Nakhararakan.

A similar IP address (46.71.135.207) posted on my talk page continuing a conversation started by user:Nakhararakan. Both IPs geolocate back to the same place. I believe this is Nakhararakan avoiding a block.--Kansas Bear (talk) 01:46, 26 September 2024 (UTC)

I've blocked the more recent IP for a week. If they continue I may have to make a wider range block. —Ingenuity (t • c) 20:26, 26 September 2024 (UTC)

Same behavior profile from another IP: 46.71.89.45 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). No one else is obsessed with replacing links to Armenia with links to Armenians. He's not going away easily. Let me know if there's a better place to report these. Daask (talk) 17:08, 30 September 2024 (UTC)

A similar IP46.71.29.196 has canvassed Yevevantsi, concerning the ethnicity of David the Invincible. Two socks of Armen888 had previously edited this article.[3][4]
This IP is blocked user:Armen888. David's ancestry was removed initially by Srnec. Which was reverted by a sock of Armen888(Armeniansarebest). --Kansas Bear (talk) 13:04, 17 October 2024 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I'm going to assume that you are accidently using this IP instead of the IP/account you are blocked from. You should use the {{unblock}} template on the talk page of the account/IP you are blocked on while using that account/IP, and try to understand and communicate with the blocking admin about why you were blocked, instead of guessing that the blocking admin is responding to a challenge to their authority with a block. Administrator Elections: Discussion phase

Administrator Elections | Discussion phase

The discussion phase of the October 2024 administrator elections is officially open. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • October 22–24 - Discussion phase
  • October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase
  • November 1–? - Scrutineering phase

During October 22–24, we will be in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages will open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as a request for adminship. You may discuss the candidates at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Discussion phase.

On October 25, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote tallies cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's tally during the election. The suffrage requirements are different from those at RFA.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time, perhaps a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose). As this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
