Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Ithamizhachi. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Thamizhachi Thangapandian, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicizing, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. You have tagged the image you uploaded as "own work". Do you know, work for or represent this person? Tacyarg (talk) 12:35, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I represent the person and the photo is owned by me. Ithamizhachi (talk) 16:13, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As you have a conflict of interest, please do not edit the article directly, but request changes on the article's Talk page. Tacyarg (talk) 16:40, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I request that this be immediately corrected. Ithamizhachi (talk) 11:50, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This user's request to be unblocked to request a change in username has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Decline reason:

You already stated (here) that you are not that person, that instead you represent that person. Nor have you addressed your conflict of interest (WP:COI). Yamla (talk) 11:54, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. I am still figuring out this process and hence not sure how this works. I am infact the person whose account this is. If there is a way to verify my identity, do let me know. I created this account so that I would be able to make changes to my profile based on official records which have been highlighted. Please do the needful and also let me know how I could resolve the Conflict of Interest. I am genuinely unclear of the process Ithamizhachi (talk) 11:58, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"I am infact the person whose account this is" This is a meaningless sentence. The question is whether or not you are Thamizhachi Thangapandian. If you are, why did you attempt to mislead us about this earlier? Either way, what do you now understand about WP:COI that you didn't understand before, and what specific steps will you take to abide by WP:COI if unblocked? Take your time, read and thoroughly understand the questions you've been asked and the policy you've been asked to review. --Yamla (talk) 12:01, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Yamla. This is Thamizhachi Thangapandian. I did not intend to mislead anyone of my identity. I just did not possibly pay attention to some certification that was asked of me before and I apologize for the same. I believed till now that the COI warning was for the content itself because of the lack of citation and not for individuals. I have now read the terms fully, but they do not apply to me as I am Thamizhachi Thangapandian and not another entity or party associated with me who is making these changes. I reaffirm that the email ID associated with the ID is my official email ID and can be verified and that this is infact, my account and by extension "Thamizhachi Thangapandian" article is a profile about me. Ithamizhachi (talk) 12:09, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You have not answered my question with regard to WP:COI. There are specific steps you must take, if unblocked. You are also mistaken; WP:COI most certainly does apply to you. As you are a well-known person, you must verify your identity. Please send an email to info-en@wikimedia.org including your real name and your Wikipedia username to receive instructions from our volunteer response team about account verification. Please do not send documentation without being requested to do so. --Yamla (talk) 12:14, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Yamla. Thank you. I shall send an email for Account Verification. Could you also let me know the process I need to pursue to unblock this account. Ithamizhachi (talk) 12:17, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You need to verify your identity and you need to demonstrate you specifically understand WP:COI. So far, you've made it very clear that you do not. --Yamla (talk) 12:20, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And how do I demonstrate that I understand Conflict of interest? I have sent an email for the account verification Ithamizhachi (talk) 12:35, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Explain what specific step you'll take prior to editing further. Additionally, explain how you would go about suggesting edits to Thamizhachi Thangapandian in the future. Hint: the answers to these questions are clearly explained in WP:COI. --Yamla (talk) 12:50, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would primarily disclose my COI on the talk page with the article Thamizhachi Thangapandian to safeguard the integrity of Wikipedia and detail why I contributed the changes on the page. I would further also invite other users to review my contributions and provide feedback. In the future all edits will feature the COI disclosed in the summary section. Do let me know if i need to follow anything else. Please help me with unblocking my page and reverting the edits I made to my page. Ithamizhachi (talk) 13:33, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Rather than directly editing the article, you should instead suggest edits on the article's talk page. --Yamla (talk) 14:11, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Right. Understood. Ithamizhachi (talk) 14:16, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also to clarify, now do I have to suggest all the changes i had previously made to the Talk page or can these edits remain and we suggest changes in the future? Ithamizhachi (talk) 14:21, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Most (or all?) of your changes were reverted and should be suggested on the article talk page. Be warned, Wikipedia is not a CV. It's very likely some or many of your suggested changes would not be made. Also, be aware it can take quite some time for volunteers to decide whether or not to make the edits. That article only has 10 page watchers, the vast majority of whom don't visit the page on a monthly basis. --Yamla (talk) 14:25, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Right okay. Could you direct me to the Talk page of the article so that I can suggest all the changes. This is a mere attempt to update the information as they are mostly either not factual or outdated. Also when would my account be unblocked? Ithamizhachi (talk) 14:37, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also is there no way from securing the page from others making edits? I am a public figure and a politician from India. Do let me know if such a process exists? Ithamizhachi (talk) 14:38, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No such process exists or ever will, that would be fundamentally incompatible with the goals of Wikipedia. The article talk page is at Talk:Thamizhachi Thangapandian and WP:DCOI explains how to suggest edits. Note that you will not be able to do so until you are unblocked. There's no timeline on that, it requires that your identity is verified. --Yamla (talk) 15:33, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
