Wikilinks to categories
[edit]If you want to create a wikilink to a category page, add a : to the start of the link, like this: [[:Category:Iran articles missing geocoordinate data]]
produces Category:Iran articles missing geocoordinate data. If you leave out the colon, you are categorizing the page. The same works for files/images and templates. Actually it works for all namespaces (but not redirects: use {{no redirect}} instead) but for most pages omitting the colon doesn't do anything. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 16:29, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Ivanvector: Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know. I should have known what the link with no colon would do, given how much I've used it. Kevinsam2 (talk) 16:36, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
Romanian rivers - orphan tags
[edit]Hi there, I noted you have added a lot of orphan tags to the pages of Romanian rivers. As they do have incoming links (most if not all that you tagged, link from the various lists of Romanian rivers), they are not orphans. Is this done automatically? --Xaiver0510 (talk) 15:45, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
- You might missed the new update to the criteria of an orphan page which is currently set at 1, instead of the old 3, incoming link. --Xaiver0510 (talk) 15:48, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, the orphan tag is added semi-automatically by WP:AWB. My main project is categorizing the rivers by county for geocoordinates; the orphan tag is incidental. Thanks for pointing this out, I will go back and check these more carefully. It looks like I was relying too much on automation. Kevinsam2 (talk) 15:57, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
- Based on petscan results, there might be around 300 pages affected. If you can help with the removal of the orphan tags, it will be great! Thanks! --Xaiver0510 (talk) 16:00, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, 312. Fortunately, AWB also makes it easy to fix this kind of problem. Kevinsam2 (talk) 16:43, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
- I see that it had been cleared up, thank you! --Xaiver0510 (talk) 16:53, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
Indonesian items
[edit]https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Category:Riau_Islands_articles_missing_geocoordinate_data possibly might be too narrow a scope - you might find better range for Indonesia or larger regions - island specific might be just a little too small and messy JarrahTree 01:14, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- I have noticed others you have done - they need a category - please... JarrahTree 01:32, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- @JarrahTree:, did you want to say something else?
- You are right that the Riau Islands category is relatively small (although not as small as you might think), but the average province will have 30-40 articles. (Probably a very high percentage will be in Jakarta though...) By far the most straightforward way to split the general Indonesia category is to use provinces, because that is how the articles are generally categorized already. The point of having these categories is to clear them, so I would have no problem with deleting the category after it is emptied. Kevinsam2 (talk) 05:38, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- the problem is when you create categories - there is a process to go through - better to have a generic title for the lot - and better to not delete - they can be standing items to cope with further items (assuming that new articles will be created) JarrahTree 05:47, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- ok, have created a category Indonesian articles requiring attention - as to have a category without a category to sit in is a real no-no, have allocated the Indonesian project to the talk pages. Hell there is a real sea of a mess out there. cheers. JarrahTree 06:30, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- @JarrahTree: Oh, that was the main problem? I'm less confused now. You aren't looking at the hidden categories. It is now hidden itself (briefly not hidden as it was being created), and a subcategory of Category:Indonesia articles missing geocoordinate data. Kevinsam2 (talk) 06:33, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- the hidden do not carry a cat - a visible one does. Project tag and category basic components of something to survive. Otherwise the prowlers are in and take the stuff off to xfd territory no questions asked. JarrahTree 06:45, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- @JarrahTree: Drawing the attention of the Indonesia project is an excellent idea. However, I have seen hundreds of sub-national geocoordinate categories like this, many that have been around for several years, and they frequently only belong to hidden categories (including ones created by User:The Anomebot2, the ruling bot of geocoordinates). I've only ever seen one deleted, and that was because it was empty. These kinds of categories tend to be pretty non-controversial. As for the exact categorization scheme, I'm happy to implement anything from the Indonesia project. Kevinsam2 (talk) 07:19, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
