Thanks!!

[edit]

Thanks a lot!! That was really a surprise! And from you always means special. Bye the way, Delhi had already been submitted once to the league for copyediting (during the first FAC) - with no result. Lets see if someone comes forward this time. Regarding New Delhi, statistics specifically for New Delhi is tough to get. Still, we should try. Could you tell me how you make maps? What software you use and such? I work on a lot of India articles and would like to make some maps. Or maybe you could direct me to some resources? Thanks! Sincerely, Mattisse 14:14, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help!

[edit]

Hi! You left me a message on the Changing Username about using the Template. I'm afraid I'm completely confused. When I used it nothing even came up on screen. Not only that but when I used it on the Edit Page it didn't look anything like what everyone else had typed and then didn't even come up on screen. I'm sure its obvious and I'm very stupid but I simply don't know how to do this. This was why I customised someone else's template as otherwise I was completely lost. It seemed to be ok the first time round. If its not too much bother, can you help? Even if it just means showing me via an email what my entry should look like? Many thanks. Nathu La must be the fastest Indian article to pass FAC! Even it may be the fastest article ever to pass FAC. (at least after FACs became tough) What do you think? I remember somewhere you told once Economy of India got FA status very fast. but Nathu La must have broken that record. Congrats. Now please devote some time to New Delhi. Could Planemad make the map? Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:30, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is indeed surprising. But I remember that the Indian Institutes of Technology also got featured on the fifth day. So I am not sure if this one's a record or not. — Ambuj Saxena () 06:01, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The economy of India was faster. Submitted it on a Monday, was featured on Friday. =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:23, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Nichalp. Can I firstly thank you for the amount of time and effort you've put into reviewing Paul Collingwood with a view to his article being elevated to WP:FA. Your comments have all been constructive and very useful. I think we're very close now and was wondering if you been kind enough to have another look to see if we've addressed your issues? I noticed you were unhappy with some weasel words, could you possibly be specific and point them out to me, if they're still present in the article. Of course, if you have any other concerns I'd be more than happy to iron them out as well. Many thanks in advance. The Rambling Man 07:58, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've used your link and some more I found myself to expand his personal life section. He's a quiet bloke, so it's been very difficult. Please see this diff ([1]). I hope you can now support. --Dweller 11:11, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Last comment (on this article!) from me... thank you so much for your patience and consideration. It makes a huge difference to see people actually taking the time to read the article with a critical eye and to make constructive and helpful comments. I look forward to working with you again (next stop, Adam Gilchrist by the way!). All the best, The Rambling Man 18:46, 23 February 2007 (UTC). P.S. Not sure if you've changed it, but I think you changed another editor's opinion instead of your own from oppose to support! The Rambling Man 18:46, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. Yup I noticed it almost immediately and changed it. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:51, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the Version 1.0 Editorial Team! :) It's always good to have an editor known for his high-quality work around. Was there any project in particular that interested you? Because currently we're a bit busy with publication of WP:V0.5, but we're starting work on WP:V0.7 soon. Also, there's the Bot assessment project, Work via WikiProjects, Core Topics... etc. Is there anything in particular you would like to work on? Titoxd(?!?) 06:57, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nichalp,
Welcome to Wikipedia:WikiProject Protected areas of India we're glad you're here and look forward to your contributions. I want to use state size and district size svg. maps in some articles I've been working on but can't crop Image:India-locator-map-blank.svg. I tried with Inkscape but couldn't. Is it possible? I'm not a computer or graphics person but would love to have an svg. at least of Tamil Nadu. Thanks,

Re: Removing RFAs prematurely

[edit]

The RfA was a joke, I don't think anybody doubts that. My oppose was also a joke. The whole thing was a joke, that is why I felt it should be closed. If this was just a newish user that really wanted to become admin asking the user to withdrawal would have been the best option but in this case after reading his replies on the RfA I felt that he wasn't going to take it down himself so I snowballed it. Again the only reason I removed it was because it was a joke and waisting our time. BJTalk 13:13, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request for review

[edit]

Hi, I have carfted a version for Indian mathematics. The version can be accessed here.

Kindly compare the version with the present Indian mathematics article, the version which to which I edited earlier and the version prior to my involvement:-

I have:-

  • Removed every single peice of quotation. The quotations ranged from glowing praises by Lapalce and Einstein to critisisms by Professor Dani. The material may belong under "Indian mathematics" on Wikiquote but it clearly will not find it's place in Encyclopedia Britannica.
  • Provided citations for extraordinary cases. I will in time provide citations for the whole of the article.
  • Removed the very odd "Charges of Eurocentrism", which is based on personal opinions and in it's best form may find place in a newspaper or a magazing article but certainly does not belong in this logbook of knowledge.

It would be helpful if you voiced your opinion on which version to keep. Please forgive the minor mistakes, if any, in grammer and puncuation. Since some editors have been aggressive and meanacing, I have had the uncharecteristic inclination to work on Wikipedia through my exams and I will make a check for these mistakes. Hello Nicholas. Thanks for the information. I wasn't aware of the agreement and thought that it would be okay as cities of other countries did give the script in the infobox (i.e. Karachi). I'll take more care in the future! Thanks again, AnupamTalk 00:58, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Stub advice

[edit]

Hi Nichalp - with the rewording of India-geo-stub, the best thing to do is proably to make it similar to most ofhter geo-stubs, which say something like "This article about a location in X is a stub" - that should make it a bit clearer that it's for geographical articles about specific features. As to the region-stub, that is a little bit against the way geo-stubs are normally sorted, and to be honest I'm not quite sure it would be very useful. Geo-stubs are usually split first by cou8ntry and then by official subnational region - the only real exception to this are national parks and other protected areas, which it make sense to split off on a national basis. India's geo-stubs are already split on a state by state basis. Any regions will either be in one state or cross two or three (in which case stubbing them with each state's geo-stub is the usual way to go. It's also a bit problematical since the term "region" is a bit vague - it could mean anything from a large landform to a census district. Grutness...wha? 01:46, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to WP:India

[edit]
Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to the India WikiProject! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of India.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every India article in Wikipedia.
  • Can you code? The automation department uses automated and semi-automated methods to perform batch tasks that would be tedious to do manually.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! — Lost(talk) 02:25, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What a pleasure to welcome you;) and thanks for putting the project in top gear once again... — Lost(talk) 02:25, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image help

[edit]

Hi Nichalp,

Thanks for your reply. From your descriptions of GFDL and CC on my talk page, I gather that GFDL is more wiki-like in spirit(correct me if that is a flawed way of seeing it), in that it demands that even derivatives of the original be released on GFDL. CC otoh only demands that the original author be given credit. Given this distinction, I think I will tag all my pics with GFDL in future.

Now the other question I had asked was, what do I do if i need to change tags. For example, I've already released this pic on both GFDL and CC. Is there any way that I can a) revoke atleast one of them b)revoke both of them c) delete that image permanently from all wiki projects. Not that I am contemplating doing that for that image, but I just want to know. Sarvagnya 06:40, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Punjab

[edit]

Thanks for the list, however, I was putting the categories in order when I realized that there might be some overlapping between the projects. WikiProject Punjab is strictly not within the singular parentage of WikiProject India, I seek to, using the project, unite Indian and Pakistani Punjabis as articles relating to pre-1947 history are all the same and other articles on language and culture which are key elements of such a project are also all the same. Which is why I created {{WP Punjab}}, but then I realised that if one says that this template would be sort of redundant in terms of classing articles because of the WP India measures already in place. But then WP Pakistan is not yet so advanced and this template will still have use there. What is the solution? While quality is universal, importance will differ between WP India and WP Punjab analyses. Nobleeagle [TALK] [C] 06:52, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thankyou for your tips, I followed them out properly (I hope). For post 1947 Punjab articles which relate to only one out of WP India or WP Pakistan, the template will be extended to show it's part of Workgroup Punjab. If the article is pre-1947, the {{WP Punjab}} template will be used along with WP India and WP Pakistan. However, Szchaider (one of the users involved in the infamous India-Pakistan arbcom case), is not being cooperative and is pretty much saying I shouldn't edit {{WP Pakistan}} (a violation of WP:OWN I would think, since my edits are constructive), so I might wait a while and then change the project to leave the post-1947 Pakistan out of it, because the project's main contributors and the entire Portal are focused on India and there's no point to having a one-sided project that claims to incorporate both sides but doesn't properly incorporate even one. Your opinions? Nobleeagle [TALK] [C] 06:20, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Copy Editor

[edit]

Hi Nichalp, Thanks for thinking of me! Let me think about it. I guess I have a few concerns. Since my life is busy and replete with many work-related deadlines and other obligations, I would rather not take on tasks that add more deadlines. In other words, I don't want to be in a situation where there is a deadline, where people are adding material until the last minute, and where I then have to keep revising text frenetically.

Maybe if you can tell me what the FAC copy-editing process entails, I will be more comfortable going into the process. Also, temperamentally, I'm the kind of person, who won't be able to copy-edit an article if I'm not turned on by the topic, so being a dedicated copy-editor might be problematic. Anyway, look forward to getting more details from you. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 13:52, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nichalp! Some thing funny happened. I did it actually yesterday. I converted them to png and uploaded them. But I just noticed that they will not be automatically in the article and I have to edit the article as well (replacing the images is not enough. I didn't know this.). Sorry for the confusion. It is now done. Sangak 17:11, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Do I need to add the template to the image page or to the article page? thanks. Sangak 17:19, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nichalp, need a bit of directions...

[edit]

Hi Nichalp. I noticed that you are a moderator/something else (I am not sure), and I hope you would be able to help me by pointing at some links.

I landed into Wikipedia long back, but a few days back I noticed that my native village/town has no much information on it. I signed up as a user, and would like to add few things to it.

I did small edits at that page - Puttur, Karnataka. I want to do more, but was a bit apprehensive of the procedures of Wikipedia. I have put what I want to add at the "Talk:Puttur, Karnataka" page. Hope I did it right.

Could you let me know if I can do those edits I mentioned in the discussion page? Or should I be asking some one else?
