Keep Found this and this that mention his national talents in handball, coming second in the US national champs. His Olympedia bio also states he played American football for the Washington State Cougars. There's this link to something on the Baltimore Sun's website, but it's blocked in the UK. This states he was inducted into a handball hall of fame in 2007, years after his career ended, with it saying he was "one of the greatest handball players Southern California has ever produced". I assume there's other (newspaper) coverage in Tacoma, Washington area, either under Jerry Conine or Gerald Conine, based on this initial search. Keep the Baltimore Sun article confirms that the wrestler, American footballer and handball player are the same person, and he seems to be notable as a handball player. He's also got lots of hits on Newspapers.com, though that will take some filtering out, to separate the articles about him from those that are just results.
