The result of the discussion was: No Consensus, leaning Keep. -FASTILY (TALK) 19:24, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- File:Study in keith.ogv (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Digego (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).
Pointless video of someone typing something (who knows what or why) in a Lisp-like language into a full-screen editor, producing audio that sounds like someone who doesn't know how to play the piano trying to play the piano. WP:NOTREPOSITORY Only playable using the VLC media player. No voiceover or other explanation to give even a clue what this overly complex "example" is doing. Possibly WP:OR; who can be sure. Msnicki (talk) 00:21, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- According to the file description it was uploaded by Andrew Sorensen (User:Digego) who composed/preformed this live coding piece, "Study in Keith", which is mentioned on his web site [1]. It seems he licensed it under CC 3.0, so there are no legal or "original research" problems. I don't know if the file is otherwise suitable for Wikipedia. The 5.1 Vorbis audio does not work in Firefox (for now) [2]; you need to download the file to have sound. Even then, his web site warns "Note that there is no sound for the first 2 minutes of the performance while initial structures are built". According to Wikipedia:NOTREPOSITORY, it could be moved to Wikisource or Wikimedia Commons maybe? FuFoFuEd (talk) 09:50, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks, FuFoFuEd. Another reason to delete: If you follow FuFoFuEd's link to Sorensen's page, he has a link to the "primary download" on mac.com. Except for the deletion discussion, the only link to this file on WP is in Talk:Impromptu (programming environment), where it got posted without explanation. There is simply no reason for us to host this. Again, WP:NOTREPOSITORY. Msnicki (talk) 14:01, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Weak delete. I removed the video from the article page and it was then posted to the talk page. I agree with Msnicki that it provides no use for the article since it consists of someone editing code that presumably does something but it's not clear what - frankie (talk) 15:41, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep. The video is an illustration of the Impromptu programming environement. I disagree with the rationale for both the removal from the article and for this FfD proposal.
- The artistic qualities are a matter of taste. I find the piece very good overall, and chilling in some places.
- Assuming you know some Lisp, you can follow what's going on (roughly, and still, it requires some mental muscles, but it is possible). See http://vimeo.com/9790850 for an example. The piece starts at
4:077:50, but the intro may also be worth listening to. Also: I guess you don't undestand the APL examples (I don't), but that's not a reason to remove them. - The initial silence is normal in a live coding setting. The piece has to be coded from scratch. The pointer to the begining of the music itself is there for people who are not interested in understanding the code.
- The video works fine, with sound in both Chrome (11 and 12 at least) and Firefox 4 on my Mac. In Safari, it tries to use the Cortado Java applet, which fails. However, if you chose the QuickTime option, you get a link to the XiphQT plugin that allows to view it. I didn't test it in Linux (should work) or Windows, but unless I'm mistaken, the IE9 HTML5 video should work, provided that you have the Ogg codecs installed system-wide. The Bugzilla report is about surround sound in Ogg/WebM videos. This is stereo sound in an Ogg/Theora video.
- The video only appears in the discussion page at the moment because we were discussing wether or not to put it back in the article.
The majority opinion was to put it backEdit: sorry, I missed the most recent developments. - WP:NOTREPOSITORY is about collections of stuff, and does not apply here.
- WP:OR is about claims. This is an illustration, released under a free license by its author (who's also the author of Impromptu). Since an appropriate license is necessary, it is impossible to get artistic content for WP, except if the authors consents.
- Neither a screenshot or a sound sample would do justice to the performance (or to the Impromptu environment). The video in this context is the most appropriate medium. We usually deplore the lack of properly licensed illustrative materials. Here we have a CC licensed video and you want to remove it. This does not make sense. I've restored the video in the article, with some context. Feel free to improve the description, but please, don't remove it without discussion. -- Pygy (talk) 09:17, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Leaving technical issues aside, the video doesn't do anything for the reader other than to show step by step how to perform one particular function of the framework (and it doesn't even do that very well, given it's lack of context and explanation). It doesn't do anything to illustrate the environment, the output, or even the particular function. You are right that neither a video nor a screenshot would do justice to the performance or the environment's features. That is because such features exist in a level of complexity that doesn't relate to images very well, but to conceptual schemes better. There are sometimes where such complex features may be expressed through source code, some other times through diagrams (as in UML et al), but most of the time the most appropriate medium is just words, which have the added benefit that they can hold wikilinks to related subjects. This video might be a useful addition to the manufacturer's documentation at their website, but for encyclopedic purposes it is out of place - frankie (talk) 13:49, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- The video is an artistic live performance, not a technical demo. There are
tons oftutorials on the official web site, but this isn't one. I've added some context before the video which should make things clearer. The first phase of the piece is a bit long, that's true, but it gets more and more interesting as time goes by. Msnicki may not like the music, but he inadvertently gave a nice compliment: it sounds like someone who plays the piano, with a ridiculously small amount of code. That alone is worth showing. -- Pygy (talk) 15:32, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply] - You can find other performances here. Some of them have graphics superimposed on the editor, but, as you can see they all share the same structure. The tutorials can be found here. The only video tutorials actually demonstrate the graphical capabilities of the system. -- Pygy (talk) 15:44, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- I see your point, and I had misunderstood the code's purpose. I'm still not convinced on the usefulness of the video, but at this point I'm not competent enough with the subject to argue any further, and not having OSX I can't review it personally. I'm moving to weak delete in light of that - frankie (talk) 18:03, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

- Keep - I can't imagine a video possibly being more appropriate than this one. It's unfortunate that the sound doesn't work inline but when I downloaded it and played it, I now understand what this programming environment is all about. Words don't do it justice. Instead of deleting the thing, we should be thanking the author for releasing a video of his product under a free license. --B (talk) 14:22, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think the public domain claim on this file is dubious, but it's orphaned anyway so we should probably just delete it. —Chowbok ☠ 01:16, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep Sorry that you think the claim is dubious, but it isn't. {{PD-textlogo}} and {{Trademark}} are exactly the right tags. Given the that the company is at the leading edge of fiber optics and related research, I see no reason to delete the logo, though I recommend moving to Commons. This is a Swedish company and they ight be better able to use it on the Swedish WP. — BQZip01 — talk 17:13, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete That is in fact a slightly dubious application of {{PD-textlogo}}, but that's besides the point. The point is that it's an orphaned image of a possibly copyrighted and at the very least trademarked logo. If you want to move it to commons, that's your prerogative, but that has absolutely no bearing on this deletion discussion. Sven Manguard Wha? 18:30, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- How the hell is it dubious at all? — BQZip01 — talk 18:51, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep but move to Commons. There's no way this is copyright-eligible. It's a single letter. You can't copyright that. Daniel Case (talk) 04:54, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph of an actor, from an advertisement campaign. FUR makes the rather surprising claim this is "a celebrated work of photographic art", but there's nothing to substantiate that in the article. Article has evident WP:PEACOCK and possible WP:COI issues, and contains a detailed list not just of the actor's filmography but also of every appearance in advertisements. - Keep (with suitable non-free tag, and fair-use rationale, which should be straightforward to provide if we agree the image has a place there). Appropriate for use at Nicaraguan córdoba -- where in fact it was used, before Delta removed it (cf this April 30 revision).
- Frankly, in my view Delta went far too far in what he removed from this article, and significantly damaged the understanding readers would get of the subject; particularly when we consider that there is no realistic likelihood of action over the use of these image, nor that such clearly educational use, clearly not harming the original purpose of use by the copyright holder would ever be held infringing by a U.S. court. What has been done to the Nicaraguan córdoba article should appall anyone who believes in the interests of our readers. Jheald (talk) 22:59, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- The argument of "we would never be sued" has never been a valid argument for retention of non-free content. --Hammersoft (talk) 12:07, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- The degree of copyright taking -- the degree to which we may or may not be treading on legitimate interests of the copyright holder -- forms the basis of the difference in treatment of the different image classes at WP:NFCI. That is based on the notion that the significance required to pass WP:NFCC #8 is to be weighed against the seriousness of the copyright taking. When the copyright taking is particularly serious -- for example a famous iconic historic photo, we require that photo to be the very subject of the article for it to pass. When the copyright taking is much less, such as for a media cover, we are more accommodating. It is often useful to consider what we imagine a commercial reuser could safely use. So it's relevant background. The key point is that this image adds something to reader understanding about how the Nicaraguan currency was physically modified to cope with hyper-inflation, which gives an understanding which goes beyond what they would get merely from text. Jheald (talk) 13:02, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

- File appears to be of Ana Silvera. (Hint: check the uploader's contrib history, then use Google Images to see whether any of the article subjects are likely candidates).
- For some reason it appears never to have been put on the page; though it has been here and credited to "Mindstudio".
- On the face of it, the pic would seem very likely to be non-free. Also, it's not entirely clear that the subject passes WP:NOTABILITY.
- Might be worth trying to send the uploader an email, through the WP email function. Jheald (talk) 22:27, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
