more boring spam

This seems to be new in the last few days. Webspawner is a free web host, they place a short intro page there, leading to the catalogcourt site.. or sometimes link directly to the catalogcourt site. The second IP was blocked on Sunday evening for 31hrs due to his spamming.

The second IP received so many warnings that whatever he was spamming should be blacklisted.
There are a lot of webspawner.com links -- are they all this guy's spam? Maybe this is like yahoo or other hosting sites -- maybe we need to just blacklist a particular subdomain.
Thanks for finding this one.--A. B. (talk) 08:32, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
This round seems to have been limited to 'office' related pages.. I suspect the catalog he was pushing people toward was some office supply thing.. I've added both catalogcourt and webspawner to XLinkBot's revert list. --Versageek 21:09, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

XLinkBot -> On-wiki revertlist!

Hi Anti-spam-admins. A new era has come, User:XLinkBot has now an on-wiki revertlist, here: User:XLinkBot/RevertList (still in its testing phase, though, we might have to go back to off-wiki blacklisting using an SQL-database). I think it is wise to add a log etc, that is something I haven't done yet, and maybe a review of the list is in order. Can I invite you all to have a look, and use it appropriately?

Some bot-settings can be altered via User:XLinkBot/Settings. --Dirk Beetstra T C 20:39, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Should have added: Both the settings and the RevertList are only editable by admins. --Dirk Beetstra T C 20:40, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
This is great -- thanks so much, Dirk. --A. B. (talk) 16:04, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

I should have reported this sooner, as I noticed it a while back but haven't had the time to investigate it fully, and still don't have the time. Besides all the spamming going on, there's the question of what links might be considered official for the articles. I've been contacted by two different editors now who have given me conflicting information on which should be official (User_talk:Ronz#Zachman_Framework, User_talk:Ronz#Linking, & User_talk:Ronz#Your_Edits_and_Revisions). I've written this report to get help with this situation instead of giving a final warning (uw-s4) to Lockezachman. --Ronz (talk) 03:48, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
This is moving along slowly. Lockezachman has a number of concerns, but is asking good questions rather than editing further. A new editor, Phogg2, has appeared and is now asking questions as well. I'm going to try another venue for help, as the spam problems are becoming secondary. --Ronz (talk) 00:26, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Blacklisting in this instance exists to protect the project from harm, and reduce the likelyhood of future abuse of wikipedia. Seology.co.il has caused significant disruption, abused Wikipedia repeatedly in violation of our policies and in spite of requests to stop, continued. There is No benifit to Wikipedia for removal at this time. --Hu12 (talk) 18:21, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Archive excerpt: seology.co.il spam on Wikipedia

This SEO company's CEO has appealed on multiple talk pages for us to take a second look at this. I have moved our earlier discussion from our January archive for reference; it includes Mr. Birenboim's note which he left on the archive page:

Domains spammed on en.wikipedia and/or il.wikipedia:
  • Google Adsense ID: 5401783979308770
  • Large notable medical organization
  • Link also added by a regular editor
  • Large notable cellphone operator

  • kwizcom.com
  • seo1site.com
  • seology.co.il

Perhaps meta the whole lot?--Hu12 (talk) 21:44, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
I don't think so, although we are well within out rights. The spamming has persisted in spite of multiple warnings and it's been cross-wiki. With this history, we normally would blacklist all the domains, including the related domains.
Nevertheless, I recommend holding off for now. The SEO doesn't own these other domains and most haven't been spammed. Even among the domains that have been spammed there are large organizations for which our editors going to want to have articles and links. I think we blacklist just that short list for now and hope this guy gets the message to stop spamming. Given the adoption of Wikimedia's meta blacklist by thousands of other, unrelated MediaWiki sites and even some search engines' linkspam investigators, this SEO has brought down a lot of pain on the domains we are blacklisting. I can't believe he's done this to himself and his business.
I've invited the SEO to join our discussion. Ultimately, the outcome is in his hands, just as it's always been. If he keeps spamming, we're not going to have any choice but to blacklist the other stuff. --A. B. (talk) 00:41, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Dear Wikipedia,
My name is Natan Birenboim, I'm the CEO of SEOlogy.co.il, a leading white-hat SEO company in Israel which optimizes the websites of large, notable organizations in Israel and abroad.
A few days ago I've found out that most of our clients, including ourselves, are listed on Wikipedia's Blacklist. After investigating the issue, I have sadly realized that one of our employees abused Wikipedia by pushing links to his own private websites into several entries, ignoring Wikipedia's rules and warnings, disregarding our policies.
If this issue would have been brought to my attention, I would have made sure immediately that it doesn't happen again. But since I haven't personally gotten a warning, there was no way I could have known about the issue.
I have just fired the employee responsible for this disgrace. I request that our company's clients' legitimate websites be delisted from Wikipedia's blacklist immediately.
Here is the list of sites that I request to be delisted:
  • fancydiamonds.net
  • hadassah.org.il
  • fts-soft.com
  • orange.co.il
  • seology.co.il
  • wao.co.il
  • 3dvsystems.com
  • africa-israel.co.il
  • arkia.co.il
  • caesarstone.com
  • cognifit.co.il
  • e-mindfitness.com
  • eldan.co.il
  • gemini.co.il
  • hadasit.co.il
  • hertz.co.il
  • idit-technologies.com
  • mainsoft.com
  • meitav.co.il
  • optier.com
  • optonol.com
  • ortal-hr.co.il
  • prepwizard.com
  • reliable.co.il
  • shahal.co.il
  • shomreymishkal.co.il
  • silentium.com
  • tambour-paint.com
  • verlain.com
  • verlain.co.il
  • verlain.fr

Please let me know how we can proceed.

seology.co.il discussion

Discuss request here

Here's meta blacklisting request:

Only these domains were blacklisted:

  • bookkeeping-course.com
  • canaseed.com
  • fancydiamonds.net
  • worldwide-tax.com
  • kwizcom.com
  • seo1site.com
  • seology.co.il
  • wao.co.il

--A. B. (talk) 18:46, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Mr. Birenboim, we did not blacklist SEO clients' domains that had not been spammed here. Additionally, where I thought regular, good-faith editors were highly likely use a link (such as for our existing articles about Hadassah Medical Center or Orange Israel, I did not recommened blacklisting.
If you look at these two user talk pages, you'll see that we left multiple messages for seology's editor asking the spamming to stop; these included links to all our rules on this sort of thing:
Finally, we were given no choice but to blacklist those domains.
Typically, we do not remove domains from the spam blacklist in response to site-owners' requests. Instead, we de-blacklist sites when trusted, high-volume editors request the use of blacklisted links because of their encyclopedic value in support of our encyclopedia pages. If such an editor asks to use your blacklisted links, I'm sure the request will be carefully considered and your links may well be removed.
The global blacklist is used by more than just our 700+ Wikimedia Foundation wikis (Wikipedias, Wiktionaries, etc.). All 3000+ Wikia wikis plus a substantial percentage of the 25,000+ unrelated wikis that run on our MediaWiki software have chosen to incorporate this blacklist in their own spam filtering. Each wiki has a local "whitelist" which overrides the global blacklist for that project only. Some of the non-Wikimedia sites may be interested in your links; by all means feel free to request local whitelisting on those.
--A. B. (talk) 19:20, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
I would agree with A. B. on this issue. There seems to be no pressing need for its removal. If a specific link is needed as a citation, an etablished editor can request it on the whitelist on a case-by-case basis, where the url can be demonstrated as a source (in an appropriate context) when there are no reasonable alternatives available.--Hu12 (talk) 10:24, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
I third that. If a need arises to add a particular domain to an article where it's appropriate, it can be revisited at that time. OhNoitsJamie Talk 16:20, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
no Declined -- domains will remain blacklisted. --A. B. (talk) 16:02, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
--Natan Birenboim-- It is not logical that our company would be punished as a result of actions performed by an unauthorized employee which had no permission to do them. The damage caused to our company is real (and not virtual) and cost us money. The reason for it is that you are not careful enough when you decide on extreme actions such as blacklisting domains. You should assume that this "editor" that spammed Wikipedia might not be a real editor but someone who intentionally wants to damage the company and consequently you should appeal officially to the company before deciding on such severe actions.
Therefore, I'm asking you again to remove all of the domains that I've mentioned in my previous message from any blacklist related pages or debates.
Thank you very much,
Natan Birnboim

While I appreciate your concern, the facts remain above. Unfortunatly the internal affairs on how seology.co.il conducts business is largely not our concern when it results in mass disruption and damage to Wikipedia. Much consisderation has been given to the issue and its an unfortunate event, many hours/days have been spent undoing the damage caused to Wikipedia as a result. Perhaps when a need arises for use as a citation where one of these domains could add encyclopedic value, it will again be carefully considered. However, there seems to be no pressing need for removal or benifit to Wikipedia for doing so at this time. no Declined--Hu12 (talk) 16:34, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Mr. Birenboim, we blacklist on based on editor behaviour to maintain the integrity of our encyclopaedia. We're not into punishment, just prevention. We get many requests to remove spam from people who say they won't spam again -- and then, if we remove the domains, they try slipping stuff back in later. Maybe they're telling the truth, maybe they're not -- we have no way of knowing. We don't really know who the actual individual is -- we just know an IP address or a user name. What we do know is the track record of seology.co.il, the organization, on Wikipedia: we left 6 warnings (with links to our rules) which were ignored by seology.co.il editors. Then, after the blacklisting and extensive discussion in early January, your own IP then spammed he.wikipedia.org with a link to caesarstone.com,[13] one of the domains we chose not to blacklist. Another IP spammed a hadassa.org link.[14] A new account, Oe2k, also created two articles that were deleted as spam: Aradial Technologies and FTS Software. (Oe2k may have been an FTS employee instead of an seology employee -- we're not sure).

As for your accusatory and aggressive comments above, they're chutzpah:

  • "this "editor" that spammed Wikipedia might not be a real editor but someone who intentionally wants to damage the company"
  • "the damage caused to our company is real (and not virtual) and cost us money."
    • Your company abused our website repeatedly in violation of our rules and in spite of requests to stop. You gave us little choice. Normally we would have blacklisted all the domains listed above, but instead we only blocked a limited number. And then your company continued spamming anyway later that month. We blacklist to protect our Wikimedia sites, normally after 3 or 4 warnings have been ignored. Seology got more than 4 warnings, including one specifically warning of blacklisting if abuse continued. Everything we've done in this regard is transparent -- our actions as well as yours are publicly recorded on talk pages and and page histories. Go up to the "Accounts" section above, click on the links labeled "talk" and "contribs" and you can see the relevant discussions and edit histories for yourself, as can anyone else. Our decision was very straightforward given this record. Seology has no one to blame besides itself if it doesn't like the outcome of its behaviour.
  • "unauthorized employee"
    • As noted above, we have no way of knowing who at seology is doing this, just that it's the Seology organization (from the detailed pattern of edits and your own posts here and elsewhere). If you check a bag on El-Al or Lufthansa and upon arrival find that things are missing do you not hold the airline accountable? Do they say it was an unauthorized employee's theft and refuse to pay damages? I don't think so.

If you really don't intend to spam again, then you don't need those domains off the blacklist. As I wrote above, if a regular editor needs to add a link to a page on one of these sites, we'll be happy to whitelist a specific URL.

Appears to a case where the ownner of the site is adding his own links (since 2004) to articles [16][17] and has engaged in Canvassing talk pages. Clear violations of External links policy on Advertising and conflicts of interest and conflict of interest. The sites appears to be WP:OR, which has previously bee discussed on AN/I Original research and linkspam on Talk:Mike Huckabee.. --Hu12 (talk) 05:48, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

I am the owner of the site in question. There have been very few cases where I've added any link of my site to any article in-Wiki. For the most part, I have posted information to talk pages, for others to review, which is perfectly acceptable behaviour. HU12 has been on a several week rampage against me, because I dared to question his overtly dishonest COI on a content-issue. This request was posted in bad faith as a revenge attack by HU12 against me. Furthermore the AN/I page shows that no action was taken, my edits to Talk have been fully vindicated by any review. There is no policy covering this area as HU12 knows fully. He has previously made the attempt to insinuate that there was, and it was roundly rebuffed by experienced editors and policy-police. He is here only because he wishes to do an "end-run" outside of proper scope to discredit me, in his failed campaign to white-wash his own anti-project behaviour.Wjhonson (talk) 05:56, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Editors with a COI that think they have content of value to offer are encouraged by our guidelines to mention it on article talk pages for other editors to evaluate and possibly add to articles. (We sometimes make an exception where the editor with the COI is being especially aggressive, tendentious, or is pushing blatantly obvious spamlinks of no value.)
I'll try to look at this closer in the next day or two.--A. B. (talk) 06:44, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Thank you A. B. for your most cordial response. If any particular link, that I've added to an article page is deemed inappropriate, please let me know, I have no problem with removing it. Afaik, the only links from article pages to my site were in Robert Nesmith, which I've now self-reverted in favor of the underlying primary source citation, and in Genie Wiley which I added, then reverted, and another editor re-added later. I didn't however review every diff posted above so I may be forgetting something, but in good faith.Wjhonson (talk) 06:51, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
A. B. I would like you to take into account that Hu12 has never approached me with concern over the links. To me that is the first step in DR and this report here is premature as out-of-process.Wjhonson (talk) 07:01, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
You were aware of this back in March 2007 @ AN/I Original research and linkspam on Talk:Mike Huckabee., so there is no excuse and I yes reminded you [18]. While one or two talk page request may have have been appropriate (discounting the WP:RS and WP:EL issue), 18+ (current) additions to talk pages is called Canvassing (Source soliciting), and unacceptable under any policy or guideline.--Hu12 (talk) 07:51, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
I've already addressed this with you on AN/I, the AN/I you link above, as anyone can clearly see had no response and no action. It failed. The Mediawiki talk you link to is irrelevant. There was no discussion there of any issue which you now are presenting. My website has over 500 articles now, your interpretation of Canvassing, and source soliciting is not community-standard. If you believe it is than I encourage you to take up discussion on those pages instead of attempting to again, circumvent standard procedure. You should know fairly clearly which pages are relevant to those concerns. And this one isn't it. Perhaps Hu12 you could return and re-read the source solicitation segment you linked, and clearly express the exact part of that you think my links fail. I think some clarity on this matter would ease your concern. Wjhonson (talk) 10:15, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Well, from the diffs cited above, I see definitely inappropriate links added to articles in violation of our COI guideline.[19][20][21][22][23][24] There are many more talk page link additions; as I mentioned above, I'm not as concerned about these. How many more of these links were added by Wjhonson? By others? Thanks, --A. B. (talk) 15:26, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Wjhonson, why did you do this? It's not like you didn't know the rules. And why get hostile when Hu12 calls you on it? I know there's already bad blood between you, but this seems like a weak position to defend. You've added a ton of great stuff (besides these links) to Wikipedia so nobody's going to take away your birthday, block you or blacklist your links (assuming other editors want them). Just don't add any more links to our articles and delete whatever you've already added and I suspect Hu12 and everyone else will be happy. That's my two cents; others are, of course, free to disagree (and probably will). --A. B. (talk) 15:35, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
A. B. thank you for your cordial remarks. On the first link you posted, if you track forward a few edits to here you will see that I removed that link. Not only that, but I posted to the Talk page here that I was removing it because of the possibility of a perceived COI even though no one, at that time, had said anything about it. Another editor, Admin Cuchullain put it back, on his own accord, because he felt it was an appropriate and useful link showing the evidence of her real name.Wjhonson (talk) 21:35, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
That's great, but you've still added your links at other times. Just don't. And whatever differences you may have with Hu12, this is the wrong one for you to fight or die over. --A. B. (talk) 15:45, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks A.B. for your cordial remarks. One of your links above is also from 2005, which I think may predate the guideline you're citing. One of the other links, is not actually my creation, it was created by the members of soc.genealogy.medieval, I'm only hosting their result. Regardless of all that, I have not added a link to an article in many months at least, possible close to a year. I agree that this board is not the place, and you can see that I'm not the one who brought it here. Hu12 can strike-through his request and this can be archived, no action. Like I said, if Hu12 is actually concerned about any particular link, that could be discussed on the associated article's talk page, which is standard procedure. As you can see, some of these articles like Lettice Knollys have been edited by dozens of people. No one has ever expressed concern about seeing her family tree graphically. One of Hu12's concerns above was Spam soliciting, but as you can see, you can't actually get to anywhere else from that graph. I believe that such a graph represents one of the original research exceptions, like photographs, where we are actually not only allowed but encouraged to add pictorial representations to the project. (I need to check on exactly how that's worded.)Wjhonson (talk) 19:15, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
I'll close and archive. I believe we are all in agreement Wjhonson is a valued member of this community and at this point further discussion is distracting from more productive pursuits.--Hu12 (talk) 19:30, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

I think they are a real organization and possibly worth an article, but those links are spam. It wasnt the way to publicise it. If they ever write a article that is acceptable, then we need a way of adding it.DGG (talk) 16:14, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

This site crashed my browser (IE) when trying to install something. Maby its my settings or something else, any way its still spam--Hu12 (talk) 23:00, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

  • However according to their WP article, they are a major publication, and have documented awards in their subject. So it would be a valid source of reviews. Agreed this is not the way to enter them, but it would be very wrong to blacklist them, as it would but off an important source of reliable documentation for notability.DGG (talk) 02:06, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
and it did not crash Safari. DGG (talk) 02:07, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Id agree, DGG, and would add at this point there is no need to consider blacklisting. Obviously the 113 additions from the account and IP(reg to Paste Media Group) have been removed, however reviewing many of the remaining links (103), most appear to be added in good faith. --Hu12 (talk) 13:23, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

LinkReports

As operator of COIBot I sometimes get questions about deletion of old LinkReports. These reports tend to show up with a high rank in Google searches, and for serious businesses that can be a problem (even if it is their 'fault' that these reports got generated in the beginning).

I have the general inclination to respond negatively to these deletion questions, firstly, they are an on-wiki report of the action regarding a certain site, and COIBot would regenerate the reports as long as they are on the watchlist (when the link gets re-inserted).

The other side is, these reports are a form of punishment, and we don't have to punish people unneeded (as with blocks, they are meant to be preventing damage).

I start to think now towards deletion of these reports, when the involved user/organisation promises to refrain from pushing the information, and to remove the links from the watchlist. The knowledge that these reports exists, and will be regenerated on repeating the behaviour (either from associated accounts or IPs) should be preventive enough, and for reference, the reports would still be available to the admins via the deletion records. When users which do not trigger the COIBot alarms add the link in a spammy way, it can be reported to WT:WPSPAM (again), which results in monitoring again (and possibly regeneration of the page). The only thing would be that the record shows as a redlink in the LinkSummary template, even though the data has existed before. It just would erase all on-wiki occurances of a link.

I'd like to hear some suggestions on such situations. --Dirk Beetstra T C 15:18, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

I would tend to speculate, that at the time these users/organisations notice and make those complaints they are infact engaged in or attempting to SEO. This assumes bad faith of course, with the disclaimer they did something in the past to warrent such an assumption of faith. Internal affairs of organizations and how they conduct business/promotion/SEO is largely not our concern when it has resulted in disruption and damage to Wikipedia previously. Exceptions can be made, and should in some cases.--Hu12 (talk) 16:28, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
There is the point, the damage to Wikipedia was in the past; we are talking about situations where the issue is not active anymore. When the damage is recurring, these reports will be returning, and I presume these organisations now know about that and will (try to) keep away from such cases. --Dirk Beetstra T C 16:41, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

School of Russian and Asian Studies

Since December 2007 this user has only added links to School of Russian and Asian Studies. A forum links the user to the website.[25][26] These are all conflict of interest insertions. Feel free to remove. JonHarder talk 15:53, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Comenius Project

The above users add links only to Comenius Project; MrMichael1968 edits the same topic on the Germany version with the same username and is likely Michael Nacke, the webmaster of the site.[27] This looks like conflict of interest to me. JonHarder talk 22:25, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

I have only recently started to try and add things on Wiki. I tried to place a link from my website about panic attacks and anxiety, onto several wiki pages (panic, panic attacks, anxiety) and they kept disapearing and so I persisted because I thought I had done something incorrectly to apply it, later I found to my horror it had not only 'not' been approved but I was temporarily grounded. May I explain, I am a qualified RMN (Registered Mental Health Nurse) residing in the UK and the website (http://www.cragface.co.uk/index.asp) I designed has no pop-ups, no advertising and no commercial backing. It is purely a source of information in plain English for anyone suffering this debilitating problem and there is no other agenda. (Also for your information, the "membership log-in is there purely to ensure that people behave themselves on the message board and nothing else.) All the information is available to anyone and for free. If external links are not allowed...there appear to be at least two up there (under Panic Attack) that need attention. One link doesn't work (second one) and another appears to be similar to mine but less informative. If my link is not allowed that's not a problem to me. I just wanted to clarify what was incorrect in my actions or what content in PanicStop was disaproved of? Thanks. (it was suggested I contact this page by Dispenser, after first being told to ask on page Wikipedia talk:WikiProject External links by Roleplayer.) Template:User summary/light

I would appreciate a second opinion on this; I see the user Princewally repeatedly adding this link[30] to the website www.stategunrights.org to a series of 'gun' articles. This seems not Ok per WP:EL in my opinion, but I am curious of what other editors think. SaltyBoatr (talk) 18:32, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

I added a useful, on-topic link to articles that match the link. As far as I can tell, WP:EL allows that link and disallows others that you don't consider spam. The link is on-topic and useful. There is no malware, no obnoxious ads. It makes more sense to include that link than all of the individual state links on some of those pages. princewally (talk) 18:32, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

I agree that the link is unnecessary (and it has adverts). OhNoitsJamie Talk 19:32, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
The ads are minor, and it has a lot of information, but I'm not going to reinstate the links anymore. If you don't want the useful information, so be it. princewally (talk) 19:32, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Somebody, I think

seems to be intent on external linking every Tibetan word on Wikipedia to this site,

It seems to me that if this were desirable, it should go through WikiProject Tibet (I assume there is one) and a proper template would be made to Wikilink to the most desirable site, perhaps Tibetan Wiktionary (if there is one). These links seem to be motivated primarily to drive traffic to a specific site. 122.145.4.55 (talk) 20:32, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

I started to blacklist the planetebook.com domain but then noticed the time sequence at User talk:Richardcrocker1:
  • The editor made a sequence of link additions between 02:05 and 02:14, then 4 escalating spam warnings within seconds of each other at 02:15 were left on his talk page. He completed an edit at 02:16, made no more edits and was blocked 2 minutes later. It's likely he was unaware of any of these warnings until he saved his 2:16 edit.
He received one spam warning in 2005 but nothing else since then. --A. B. (talk) 19:50, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

So far he's managed to spam a policy page & change a redirect..

These three ips appear to be the same editor. There's no response to any of the warnings or edits except to add the link back. --Ronz (talk) 16:55, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
I would have blocked these but you've given them all a final warning since the last spam so we'll have to wait any return again. --BozMo talk 17:20, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Now's your chance. 81.155.175.6 added it again to the same four articles. --Ronz (talk) 16:52, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Blocked the user for 48 hours. Hope they respond. --Dirk Beetstra T C 16:58, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
If it's bad enough to block, then it's bad enough to blacklist. Plus blacklisting stops it once and for all. --A. B. (talk) 18:37, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Template:Deferblack -- now blacklisted locally. --A. B. (talk) 19:15, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Fantasy Basketball Federation

Template:Linksummary

  • Seeking a local blacklist on the site. User:75.42.72.220 does make plenty of good edits but seems to believe that there is a right to drop the link to his basketball league on Fantasy basketball because he contributed material to the article. Open directory link has already been placed on the page. Will leave one more comment at the user's page. Montco (talk) 17:54, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

There's where you are wrong, it is not our intention to "advertise" for our page, it is a valid Fantasy Basketball link. As is the more appropriate DMOZ FB Leagues page. If that is the case then the external link to NBA Fantasy Games is "advertising" for NBA.com and is an inappropriate link as well. Further, which I have stated will document in edits, much of the material provided by us initially. Please read the discussion page, as I will be editing the page back to it's premorphed & more relevant/pertinent version to Fantasy Basketball players and people who have an interest in that subject (ie: people that would actually use the page for their benefit). I will also be adding back many External Links that I feel are pertinent to the issue, again that are in the best interests of the people who would use the page/article, which I had planned on doing next week (see discussion page) but will move up that timetable. I may be mistaken, but from your comments it would appear as though this is not an area of expertise for you and therefore do not have an accurate understanding of what the average person who is interested in thsi subject would find useful. Although your comments and intensions behind policing Wiki are well intended, they should be directed to areas which you have a more accurate understanding as to what may or may not be pertinent. (FBF Commish) —Preceding unsigned comment added by FBF Commish (talkcontribs) 18:16, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Dear FBF Commish. The problem is here that you do have a conflict of interest. Though it is then not forbidden to add such links, or to edit such documents, it is strongly discouraged. If there are concerns about (one or more) of your edits, I would advice you to only participate in a discussion on the concern on the talkpage of the pages (or on the page of a suitable wikiproject), and when there is consensus on the talkpage that then an uninvolved editor makes the edit/adds the link.
As I see this now, I am afraid that a link to a specific leage on a page with the larger context would not be according to Wikipedia:External links. The two subjects are not directly linked. Your link would be suitable on the page about the specific leage itself; here there should be links pertaining the subject 'Fantasy Basketball Federation'. I hope this explains. --Dirk Beetstra T C 18:52, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Specifically External links policy on Advertising and conflicts of interest states You should avoid linking to a website that you own, maintain or represent. If the link is to a relevant and informative site that should otherwise be included, please consider mentioning it on the talk page and let neutral and independent Wikipedia editors decide whether to add it.--Hu12 (talk) 18:58, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

I am someone who is not only a credentialed member of the press but a Fantasy Basketball insider and it is (or rather was, as per Gwernol & Acdixon I am no longer allowed to edit this page/ article or I will be banned and blacklisted) my intention to revamp (return to form) this page to better inform and contribute to Fantasy Basketball players knowledge and enjoyment of the game including 1) sources that are and have historically been useful in informing Fantasy Basketball players (for which I have a list of external links to which I have a vested interest in none), 2) Varied league types, formats, guidelines, and settings (which I had originally in the article with no links but for some reason have over time also been deleted), and 3) Lists and Suggestions of "How To's", etc of running, joining, or playing in a Fantasy Basketball league (again with no external links in this area). However I have been informed that it is not relevant for Wiki purpose that active as well as potential or interested Fantasy Basketball players have access or be made aware this information. I will admit that I do have a vested information in the FBF page/site, however it also contains valid (and Free) information and aids to Fantasy Basketball players to which cites are relevant. I have not edited any pages on the "Boer Wars" for example, as I am not knowledgable enough in the area to be qualified to do so, yet in this area I feel quite qualified as to what is useful & informative to active and interested Fantasy Basketball players. The current External Links to DMOZ is not particularly relevant as they (DMOZ link) have become quite outdated as well a number of them are no longer valid which is not beneficial to anyone, and the "advertising" link to NBA.com's Office Fantasy Games would more appropriately be directed to NBA the news source. It was my understanding that part of Wiki's function or purpose was to "inform" and "educate", however I have been advised by Acdixon that "The point is not to be an aid to fantasy basketball players". Please advise ---FBF Commish--- —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.42.72.220 (talk) 20:30, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

The advice for you is clear. You may not add this link to Wikipedia, as it is against clearly agreed policies. You can suggest it on the talk page and see if another editor adds it, that's all. Wikipedia seeks its aims only in a manner consistent with the policies which overall protect those aims. Please don't be tempted to invent another account to add the links either. --BozMo talk 20:41, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

I just want to be clear, no links to any sites whatsoever even though I have no vested interest, DMOZ link is the desired link (even though only 20% of their links remain active), and the purpose of the article cannot be to aid or educate active or potential Fantasy Basketball players. --- FBF Commish --- —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.42.72.220 (talk) 20:55, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Editors following this discussion may also be interested in the related discussion on the article's talk page. Acdixon (talk contribs urlencode:Acdixon&site=SERVERNAME count) 21:28, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

As Wikipedia, dmoz can also be altered via user input. May I suggest that you contact them for that? Thanks. --Dirk Beetstra T C 17:05, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

New editor spam record?

He added 110 links in his sole contribution to Wikipedia: [31]
Should we start watching all 110 urls? What warning should he be given? --Ronz (talk) 17:31, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
I spot-checked about 20 of the domains -- they're all hosted at 203.215.156.35 and are associated with an Australian company, ServCorp.
Domain data
I left a note on the IP's talk page. --A. B. (talk) 18:12, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Here's another Australian IP that Ronz recently tagged that added one servcorp.net link as well as a link on a different page to the seemingly unrelated brandnews.com.au domain.
--A. B. (talk) 18:33, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Here's what I assume is the same editor adding back his list of links:

It seems Template:Userlinks's main purpose is to add links to www.lankamediatalk.com. Is there an automated way to automatically revert all of this account's edits of today? Sebastian (talk) 20:58, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

I've reverted him with admin rollback, it wasn't too painful :) --Versageek 04:41, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

What to do about RockReviews

I'd like to have a bit of advice for this. Wikipedia:Most wanted articles currently lists RockReviews as one of the most linked-to non-existent articles. This is solely due to the work of Template:User who has added infobox links to the reviews from this website. However, I strongly doubt that the website itself can be considered as a significant reliable source and of course, since Wiki4U has made no other edits than these, there's a clear spam concern. The irony is that if someone were to create the article, it would probably end up being deleted because it falls quite short of the expectations of the relevant guideline. So what's the right move here? Remove all the links? Remove all mentions of RockReviews? De-link RockReviews so that it stops being a most-wanted article? My own take on it is that we should just remove all 79 reviews since they are insignificant but I'll be happy to have second opinions. Thanks, Pichpich (talk) 20:23, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Not getting much response here... So I'll just take out all the links. Feel free to let me know if you think this is a bad idea. Pichpich (talk) 04:46, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
