Naming convention

The present naming convention for this WikiProject is atrocious. Though there is only one Dutchess County in the U.S., there are 17 Monroe Counties, three Erie Counties, eight Orange Counties, six Livingston counties, three Orleans counties, etc. (source: Wikipedia disambiguation pages) With that said, the present naming convention fails when writing an article about, say, Livingston County Route 62. Is it likely that it is the only Livingston County Route 62 in the United States? Not very.

May I suggest a more pratical convention: County Route X (Y County, New York) where X is the county number and Y is the county name. This way, it is clear that (using the previous example) we are talking about County Route 62 in Livingston County, New York.

Sounds good to me. It looks like this is the style used by other existing county route articles for other states anyway. Hopefully there won't be a problem moving the relatively many Dutchess articles. --Polaron | Talk 22:42, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
I'd say give advance notice to anti-vandal bots before moving, but other than that, there shouldn't be too much of a problem. I also created a new state type for {{Infobox road}} for use with county routes. See my Sandbox for an example, which utilizes Livingston CR 62. --TMF T - C 03:16, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
I think that's a good naming convention, if a bit long. This is the same convention currently being used for County routes in New Jersey, specifically Monmouth County which deviates from the statewide 500- and 600- series county routes.. NJ is a special case, because of these statewide series (except in Monmouth). Yet they still use the convention. My only caveat would be to wait for a consensus to be agreed upon over in Wikipedia:State route naming conventions poll. --Tckma 19:10, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
I see your point, though I don't think a project such as this one would be held to any national naming convention that arises from the State route poll, since the county routes in New York are not statewide roads (only County-wide) and are not state-maintained (except for areas where a CR duplexes with a state route). --TMF T - C 19:42, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Category renaming

Infobox browse

Do we need a browse as part of the infobox for this project? I created the initial infobox without one, but I can add one if necessary. --TMF T - C 20:58, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

There are currently only a handful of articles so I don't think it would be useful. A link to the list of routes by county would probably be sufficient for now. We could add it once more articles are written. --Polaron | Talk 23:18, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Structure

OK, now that the basics (naming convention, categories, infobox) have been set, it's time to develop a structure for the articles. A good structure, IMHO, would be one that delivers all the information one would need to know about a route in the cleanest (maybe concise is a better word), most efficient and organized manner. As it stands right now, each article contains only a paragraph and, maybe, an infobox. Sure, I know there's probably not a lot to say about some roads, but let's come up with a solid standard anyway.

Obviously, we need a "See also" section so that users can browse routes by county (a good idea brought up by Polaron in the above section) as well as optional Reference and External link sections. The question is what else should be present? Should we use WP:NYSR as a basis or should we develop our own standard? --TMF T - C 03:01, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Suffolk CR 104

List pages

What kind of a look should we have for our pages containing a list of routes by county? I've started one design over at List of County Routes in Broome County, New York. Another style of design exists at List of County Routes in Dutchess County, New York. An example of a list page outside of New York State is the List of County Highways in DuPage County, Illinois. What design looks best, or, rather, what should we have on our list pages and how should it be presented? --TMF T - C 04:13, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. New stub template

More Suffolk County Roads?

Is anybody else working on pages for County Roads in Suffolk County? Of the five pages that were already written, not counting Bicycle Path, the only one I didn't write was the one for County Route 104 (Suffolk County, New York). Besides that, I'd still like to see more of those Suffolk CR shields converted into images, one of which I tried to add to the exit list of Southern State Parkway. DanTD 17:47, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Suffolk County Road Issues

I see that my Suffolk County Road list was tagged. If I reorganize it like the Saratoga County Road list, can I keep the SCR shields? The rest of those shields still need to be made, by the way. Furthermore, to NE2, "Traction Boulevard" is another name for "Suffolk Traction Boulevard." DanTD 19:09, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Good, because a lot of the ones I need still aren't up yet. Also, while I am working on the new Saratoga County-style charts, every time I test them out, they automatically go to the bottom of the section. So I'll be working on the chart for quite a while(wish I knew exactly how long.). DanTD 21:28, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Capitalization?

It seems to me that the list articles should be titled List of county routes in Rockland County, New York instead of List of County Routes in Rockland County, New York, since "county route" isn't a proper noun in that context. The naming convention for NJ list articles uses lower-case; also, note that it's County routes in New York (lower-case). -- NORTH talk 22:12, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

You're probably right. I don't think anyone is going to strongly object as lower case is consistent with the larger Wiki-wide manual of style anyway. Being the one who created a few of these lists, I'll move the lists after a day or so to make sure there are no objections. --Polaron | Talk 22:39, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Route or Road?

After some thinking, the current convention of "County Route X" may not be the best name for several counties. Locally, I know that Ontario and Livingston County Roads are named "County Road X" and, based on the language used for Suffolk County articles, it's likely that Suffolk uses "County Road X" as well. That said, here's a pair of questions:

  1. Does any county in New York actually use "County Route X"?
  2. Are there any objections to making "County Road X (Y County, New York)" the new standard? --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 22:05, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Dutchess uses "route" while Putnam and Westchester use "road". --Polaron | Talk 23:13, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Are there any others that use route? The reason I ask is that those counties can remain at "route", but the others should be moved to "road". --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 14:58, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Rockland also uses "road". I'm not familiar with the rest of the county systems. In any case, I don't believe there would be anyone against moving to "Road". We can wait a few more days and hopefully others can weigh in. --Polaron | Talk 16:27, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Question

On exit lists (for instance on interstates) it varies whether a county route is listed as such or not on the list here. For instance, the New York State Thruway article lists all county routes, Interstate 84 lists some, and most of the spurs of Interstate 90 list none. What is the correct way to illustrate this?
