Warner Bros. presented Strick with warming, or freezing [[Gotham City]], a plot point they would later use in ''[[Batman & Robin (film)|Batman & Robin]]''. In early 1991, two of Hollywood's largest [[sound stage]]s (Stage 16 at Warner Bros. and Stage 12 at [[Universal Studios]]) were being prepared for the filming of ''Batman Returns''.<ref name=Mad/> Filming started in June 1991.<ref name=Sally/> Stage 16 held Gotham Plaza, based on [[Rockefeller Center]]. 美國作家李察·麥森於1954年發表了恐怖小說《我是傳奇》,該小說於1964年首度改編成電影《地球上最后一人英语The Last Man on Earth (1964 film)[1]。1970年,華納兄弟取得該小說的電影改編權英语Film rights,並於隔年推出新的改編電影《最后一个人[1]。到了1990年代,科幻和驚悚類型的電影東山再起[2],促使華納兄弟於1994年開始籌畫新版的《我是傳奇》改編電影[1],華納兄弟的製片部門主管洛倫佐·迪·波納文圖拉對該企畫也充滿熱情[3]。華納兄弟製片人大衛·海曼尼爾·H·摩里茲負責監製,並聘請義大利導演卡羅·卡雷英语Carlo Carlei來推展這項企劃[4]。1996年,華納兄弟的一名製片人看過《入侵腦細胞》的劇本後,給予馬克·普魯托塞維奇英语Mark Protosevich為《我是傳奇》編劇的機會[2]。普魯托塞維奇當時一共有三個華納兄弟的企劃可以選,他對於將《我是傳奇》改編成電影最為嚮往[5]

華納兄弟非常看好普魯托塞維奇寫的劇本,將之列為高優先度的企畫[6]。對於男主角的演員,湯姆·克魯斯[7][6]邁克爾·道格拉斯[7][6]梅尔·吉布森[6]都曾是考慮人選,阿诺·施瓦辛格也在1997年1月對本片加以關注[8],與本片有聯繫的導演則有詹姆斯·卡梅隆吉勒摩·戴托羅[9]。1997年7月,根據《綜藝雜誌》報導,雷利·史考特已簽約擔任導演,施瓦辛格則即將登板飾演男主角[10],電影預計於同年9月[7]至10月開拍[11]。史考特進行了一些班底調整,先讓製片人博·馬克思(Beau Marks)取代摩里茲,接著開除普魯托塞維奇,改由約翰·羅根英语John Logan (writer)執筆新劇本[12]。片中的主要城市從舊金山改為2005年的洛杉矶[13],史考特花了三週實地勘景英语Location scouting[14]。片中的洛杉磯將於休斯敦拍攝[14][15],史考特也考慮在華納兄弟製片廠英语Warner Bros. Studios, Burbank打造荒蕪的洛杉磯布景[14]

羅根編寫劇本的同時,史考特安排一支美術團隊來進行視覺設計,成員有藝術指導亞瑟·麥斯英语Arthur Max概念藝術畫家タニ・クニタケ(Tani Kunitake)、分鏡師席爾凡·德斯普雷兹(Sylvain Despretz)[14]。美術團隊籌畫的場景包含大使酒店荷里活蠟像館,以及奈佛打造的藏身要塞等[13]。片中的屍體和感染者的外觀由麥斯設計,參考對象包含各種屍體照片和醫學資料[16][17]。在史考特的要求下,感染者行動敏捷有如猎豹,與《活死人之夜》等電影裡的遲緩殭屍截然不同[17]。之後,特效師艾力克·吉利斯(Alec Gillis)與湯姆·伍德拉夫二世英语Tom Woodruff Jr.試作了特效化妝[註 1][17],英國的磨坊特效公司英语The Mill (company)則測試電腦合成影像(CGI)可以如何運用在片中[11]

然而,劇本重寫遲遲未完成,已超過原定的開拍時程[11],華納兄弟也對史考特的構想抱持疑慮[20]。最終華納兄弟開除了羅根,將普魯托塞維奇找回來。[20]。普魯托塞維奇將劇本重寫一遍,華納兄弟較能接受這版劇本,幾乎要為該片亮起綠燈[21],但在1997年12月,華納兄弟高層對高預算企劃進行評估,該片被認為太過花錢(預算約1.08億美元)而卡關[22]。普魯托塞維奇把預算過度膨脹歸咎於史考特加入後所作的改動,稱史考特的野心導致該片的規模由小變大[23],而華納兄弟本身起初也對史考特過於放任[24]。《綜藝雜誌》指出,該片若無法把預算降到9000萬美元以下,可能就無望製作[22]。另一位編劇尼爾·希門尼斯英语Neal Jimenez被找來重寫劇本,普魯托塞維奇再度被開除,但前者的劇本仍無法說服華納兄弟[23]。史考特也有試圖重寫劇本來解決預算問題[25],但華納兄弟仍在1998年3月中止了本片的製作計劃[26][27][25]。作家大衛·休斯(David Hughes)指出,華納兄弟的決定與當時數部大片票房失利有關,包含《蝙蝠侠与罗宾》、《2013終極神差》和《地動天驚[21]

史考特離去後開始製作《神鬼戰士[28],史瓦辛格雖然投身主演《魔鬼末日[29],但報導稱他仍與《我是傳奇》保持聯繫[30]。華納兄弟也沒有完全死心,於1998年7月延攬新導演羅伯·鮑曼英语Rob Bowman (director)[30][31],並與製片人史蒂文·魯瑟英语Steven Reuther的公司Bel Air Entertainment合作[30],計畫以較低預算製作該片[32]。魯瑟讀了每一個版本的草稿,決定請普魯托塞維奇第三度提筆為本片編劇[32]。普魯托塞維奇於1998年12月30日寫出新劇本,對電影規模進行縮減[24]寇特·羅素一度是史瓦辛格的替代人選,但他主演的票房炸弹兵人》成為否定因素[33]。另一方面,華納兄弟當時新上任的首席运营官艾倫·F·霍恩英语Alan F. Horn不喜歡這部片(原因據稱是他反對暴力電影),致使本片的發展難有起色[34]。鮑曼最終去執導了另一部電影《火焰末日[35]

2001年11月,據《綜藝雜誌》報導,威爾·史密斯麥可·貝有望繼《絕地戰警》後再合作一部電影,選項包含《絕地戰警2》和《我是傳奇》[36]。不過也有消息指出,如果《我是傳奇》能繼續製作的話,史瓦辛格可能不會把主演位子讓給史密斯[37][38]。2002年3月,史瓦辛格同意改擔任製片人,《我是傳奇》重新回到華納兄弟的製作行列中,貝與史密斯已經在與片商談合約[3]。他們的計劃仍是以普魯托塞維奇的劇本為藍圖,拍一部R級的黑暗電影[39]。在霍恩持反對意見的情況下,該片在當時仍然未能拍成[40],也有部分原因是《28日後》已搶佔先機[9][39]

2004年,阿奇瓦·高斯曼接受華納兄弟製片部門總裁傑夫·羅賓諾夫(Jeff Robinov)的邀請,出任本片的製片人[39]。高斯曼邀請在《魔間行者》有過合作經驗的導演法蘭西斯·羅倫斯[影 1],後者在2005年9月簽約執導本片,拍片作業預計於2006年開始[41]。在與羅倫斯合作之下,高斯曼重寫了新的劇本[41][42],於2005年聖誕節之前完成,並寄給在《機械公敵》合作過的史密斯[43]。2006年4月,史密斯簽約飾演男主角羅伯·奈佛[44]。在史密斯的提議下,他們將高斯曼的新劇本與普魯托塞維奇的舊劇本結合在一起,並成功說服霍恩亮起綠燈[39]。史密斯原本會先在2006年夏天至秋天開拍《全民超人》,本片的拍攝則等到2007年,但《全民超人》無法如期開拍,兩部片的拍攝時間於是對調[39][45],不過這讓《我是傳奇》劇組當時只剩16週的準備時間[39]。2006年8月,本片定於2007年11月21日在美國上映[46],拍攝時程則定於2006年9月23日至2007年3月31日,預計為期七個月[47]。2006年12月,本片改於2007年12月14日在美國上映[48]

本片的編劇名分由馬克·普魯托塞維奇英语Mark Protosevich阿奇瓦·高斯曼持有,並標明除了原著小說外,約翰·威廉·柯林頓英语John William Corrington喬伊斯·霍珀·柯林頓英语Joyce Hooper Corrington為《最后一个人》所寫的劇本也是本片藍本之一[49]。受到华纳兄弟的賞識,普魯托塞維奇自1996年起開始為參與《我是傳奇》的編劇[5],在一波三折的籌備階段中,普魯托塞維奇三度加入並三度離開,最終不再與該企劃有牽連[40],高斯曼於2004年成為製片人並投入編劇[39]。普魯托塞維奇於1997年第一次被開除後,約翰·羅根英语John Logan (writer)受當時的導演雷利·史考特指派為新編劇,直到華納兄弟將之開除。另一位編劇尼爾·希門尼斯英语Neal Jimenez一度受聘重寫劇本,但未獲認可[23]

普魯托塞維奇非常喜歡原著小說和《最后一个人》[50]。他在1996年寫的初稿設定在2002年的美國舊金山(原著小說則是康普顿[1]),初稿裡的感染者稱作「Hemocyte」,渾身蒼白且無毛髮,有著吸血鬼的習性[50]。片中出現的Hemocyte有著一定程度的社会阶级[16],且他們會活捉倖存者,當成吸血的血液供應源。安娜的角色設定是個孤身一人的嗎啡成癮者,為了救被Hemocyte抓走的弟弟而出賣奈佛。初稿的結局是奈佛盡可能從Hemocyte手中救出倖存者,並往海的方向前進。[51]雖然當時找來阿诺·施瓦辛格飾演主角,普魯托塞維奇在編劇時心中所想的是丹尼爾·戴-劉易斯[6]。舊金山的設定後來遭到華納兄弟否決,因為舊金山景觀獨特,難以用其他城市來喬裝或者在摄影棚搭景英语Set (film and TV scenery)複製,拍攝起來較為受限[14],羅根在後來以2005年的洛杉矶取而代之[13]。根據高斯曼的看法,普魯托塞維奇的劇本就已同時參考了原著小說和《最后一个人》[52]

羅根被史考特招攬後,兩人花費5個月持續改寫劇本,先後產出六代劇本[53]。羅根與史考特摒棄一般電影的公式,以科學角度來推敲「要是全人類僅存一人」會發生什麼事,此方向與普魯托塞維奇不同[54]兩人透過人类学社会学神學等方向進行思考,並諮詢科學家和生存主义者來找出人們對滅絕危機的反應[55]。在羅根的第一稿中,開頭的15分鐘描寫人類文明瓦解的過程,眾人試圖民防自保、屍體熊熊燃燒,然後才是奈佛的故事[55]。劇本裡的奈佛完全孤身一人,任何能互動的對象(其他人類、狗)都從劇本中刪除[55],奈佛在結局仍未找到其他倖存者[20]。為了讓觀眾同樣感到孤獨無依,兩人也捨棄了《地球上最后一人》和《最后一个人》裡奈佛的旁白[55]。初稿的頭一個小時完全沒有台詞,但這種作法風險太大,兩人後來決定播放奈佛妻子死前錄給他的錄音帶當作畫外音,羅根覺得該作法可以營造令人驚豔的效果[14]。在某一版的草稿中,史考特提出新的故事方向,即奈佛將一隻Hemocyte抓來做實驗,發現它是女性並成功使它部份恢復成正常人,奈佛與它發展出類似愛情的關係[53]。1997年底,華納兄弟不滿意羅根的劇本而將之開除[20]。羅根認為該片的主軸是奈佛依附著過去的回憶來活下去[14],整部電影非常講究氛圍,是一則關於記憶和往事、略帶憂鬱的情感故事[20]。但華納兄弟期望的是意旨明確易懂、由史瓦辛格飾演終極生存者的動作鉅片,故無法全盤接受史考特的構想[20]

普魯托塞維奇第二次執筆劇本,他在與史考特進行討論後,將劇本重寫一遍,納入羅根寫的第三幕(奈佛與女性變種人)[21]。在該劇本中,Hemocyte變得更像禽獸,奈佛則直到結尾才遇到其他倖存者[21]。劇本的結尾描述變種人向奈佛的藏身處發動全面進攻,奈佛逃過一劫並躲到廢棄機場,與一名倖存者男孩碰個正著,雙方都驚訝不已,故事結束在男孩一邊呼喚媽媽一邊跑開[21]。奈佛的狗當時叫做斯托克,向《德拉库拉》作者布莱姆·斯托克致敬[21]。該版本的劇本令華納兄弟較為滿意[21],但整個企劃在1998年3月因預算問題而中止[26]。普魯托塞維奇再度被開除,希門尼斯受聘重寫劇本但未成功[23]。華納兄弟在數個月後打算將該片解凍,普魯托塞維奇第三度被找回來編劇,於1998年12月30日寫出新劇本。普魯托塞維奇在劇本中增加了室內場景的占比,取景地點也限縮在一定數量,目的是縮減預算[24]。這份劇本更加著重於動作場面,不過由於史瓦辛格已逐漸淡出,電影的核心角色從奈佛改成了安娜與男孩伊森(設定從弟弟改成外甥)[56]。該劇本仍未拍成,普魯托塞維奇最後不再參與其中[40]

2004年之後,高斯曼與新導演法蘭西斯·羅倫斯接手了企劃。羅倫斯對於「獨自一人在都市生存」的故事充滿興趣,看過的作品包含原著小說和《Earth Abides英语Earth Abides[影 1],高斯曼則在小時候深受《最后一个人》所震撼[影 1]。兩人對劇本有一些想法,高斯曼原本想要寫一份電影劇本大綱英语Film treatment,然後讓其他編劇接手,一回神卻發現自己寫完了一整份劇本草稿[39]。兩人讓焦點回到原著小說的「誰才是真正的怪物」之議題[1],在保留原著精神的前提下大幅修改劇情[影 2]。高斯曼也將片中的主要城市從洛杉磯改成紐約,認為後者更能表現出空虛的感覺[1]:「洛杉磯在下午三點的時候看起來空蕩蕩的,(但是)紐約市從來不會……如果要呈現世界的蕭瑟、空寂,這麼做更有意思。」[註 2][57]新主演威爾·史密斯希望將普魯托塞維奇與高斯曼的構想結合在一起,於是史密斯、羅倫斯、高斯曼,以及史密斯的合夥人詹姆斯·拉斯特英语James Lassiter四人開始集思廣益[39]。至2006年5月時,他們成功用35至40頁的綱要書整理出全片輪廓,涵蓋每個場景[39]。在電影已經開拍後,四人仍持續討論,從各自的角度調整劇本[39]。根據高斯曼的說法,他們在構思時會想像自己置身於片中世界,以求讓電影在各個方面更具說服力[影 3]

選角

威爾·史密斯於2006年4月簽約飾演男主角羅伯·奈佛[44]。史密斯表示,他覺得這部片充滿潛力而接演,並稱飾演奈佛是繼在《威爾史密斯之叱吒風雲》(2001年)中飾演穆罕默德·阿里以來最艱難的演出經驗,因為他在《我是傳奇》幾乎是隻身一人,演戲時沒有互動對象[57]。為了打造引人入勝的獨角戲,史密斯嘗試一些即興演出,並參考主角孤立無援並掙扎求生的電影,一大參考對象即是汤姆·汉克斯演的《浩劫重生[43]。史密斯也向傳染病和單獨監禁的專家請教[43],並訪問前战俘和被單獨監禁過的人,其中包含黑豹党成員傑若尼莫·普瑞特英语Geronimo Pratt[58]。對於奈佛這個角色,史密斯將奈佛比做聖經故事裡幾乎失去一切的约伯[59],認為本片「探討了希望的必要性」[39],羅倫斯則指出奈佛藉由在生活中維持紀律讓自己免於發瘋[影 4]

2006年7月時一度有消息稱強尼·戴普將與史密斯共演本片[60],但兩個月後即遭否定[61]。2006年9月,據報導,演員莎莉·里查森將在片中飾演奈佛的妻子,而艾莉丝·布拉加則將飾演倖存者安娜(Anna)[62]。布拉加認為她的角色非常努力地鼓勵奈佛重拾希望[影 5]。2006年10月,宣布史密斯的6歲女兒威洛·史密斯將在本片獻出她的大銀幕首秀,飾演奈佛的女兒瑪莉(Marley)[63]。2007年2月,達什·米霍克加入演員陣容,飾演男性變種人首領[64]艾瑪·湯普遜也進行了未掛名演出,飾演艾莉絲·柯普恩博士,在電視上解說她發明的癌症疫苗(後來變異成殭屍病毒)[65]派特·法利英语Pat Fraley幫片中沒有露臉的總統配音[66]。歌手麥克·派頓英语Mike Patton受邀為片中的變種人配上奇怪的聲音,他花了4個小時完成錄音[67][68]

片中奈佛的狗小珊[註 3]一共由三隻狗演員飾演[影 6],上場最多的是三歲的德國牧羊犬艾比(Abbey)[69],牠的訓練師是史蒂夫·貝倫斯(Steve Berens)[影 7]。艾比在與史密斯共戲前接受了三週的訓練[69]。羅倫斯稱艾比演出時很少出狀況[影 6],少數例子是在拍你丟我撿英语Fetch (game)的橋段時,艾比不願意配合,劇組不得不出動備用的狗演員[69]。史密斯對艾比的表現讚譽有加,一度希望能領養牠,但艾比得留在工作崗位[58][70]

拍攝

本片的主體拍攝於2006年秋天開始[43],預算為1.5億美元[71][72][73]。2006年9月25日,本片正式開拍[74]。本片的攝影指導由安德鲁·莱斯尼擔任[75],他主要採用變形鏡頭英语Anamorphic format進行攝製,而閃回英语Flashback (narrative)片段則以超35英语Super 35膠片攝影機拍攝[76],畫面長寬比為2.40:1[77]

片中的主要城市設定在紐約曼哈頓,導演羅倫斯堅持在現場拍攝而不是在攝影棚進行[78][影 8]。羅倫斯帶著手持攝影機去了現場,在人潮洶湧的地點錄影,然後進行一次特效測試,成功將人群消除,令華納兄弟的高層頗為驚艷[78]。但由於紐約非常繁忙、不易拍片,華納兄弟出於預算和後勤考量不打算同意,所幸在《終極警探3》就有經驗的執行製片人麥可·塔德羅斯英语Michael Tadross成功申請到拍攝許可英语Filming permit,讓羅倫斯如願以償[39]

當局同意封閉部分地區以利劇組拍攝,封閉措施僅在夜裡或週末執行,這類的拍攝從2006年9月持續到2007年4月[39],影史上很少有電影在紐約取景如此之久[79]。劇組用上的區域包含公园大道高架桥第五大道華盛頓廣場公園等繁忙地點[39],以及先驱广场[80]大中央總站大都會藝術博物館[81]時報廣場是例外之一,劇組是以搭景拍攝[80]。劇組放置廢棄車輛[影 9],並從佛罗里达州運來大量植物當作雜草[39],將城市布置成荒廢三年、已經部分回歸自然的樣子[影 10]。整體來說,封街拍攝造成紐約市民一定程度的不便[82],史密斯表示:「我想之後不會有人能在紐約這樣子做了。民眾不怎麼開心。我出道以來還沒被人比這麼多中指過。」[註 4][59]劇組在清晨拍攝爆破戲的聲響也影響到華盛頓廣場公園周遭的居民[82]

本片最早的拍攝行程由第二攝影組英语second unit(導演為維克·阿姆斯壯英语Vic Armstrong)負責,主要拍攝室外場景[影 11]。劇組在公园大道高架桥進行為期五天的拍攝時,為了管制雙向車流,劇組也必須申請封閉公園大道的大中央總站路段[83]。在某個星期日清晨,劇組在第五大道拍攝奈佛、安娜與伊森的2分鐘行走談話英语Walk and talk橋段(後來並未收錄進正片)[84],獲得外界關注。當時劇組申請封閉了第五大道的十個街區,並動用200名製片助理英语Production assistant進行民眾管制[84]。在拍完的瞬間,旁觀的上千名民眾為劇組鼓掌喝采[84]

奈佛的藏身處取景於格林尼治村[59],內景則是在威廉斯堡的馬爾西大街兵工廠(Marcy Avenue Armory)拍攝[1][57]。劇組在兵工廠內的演習場[影 12]搭建了完整的四層樓裝潢,並包含地下室和實驗室[影 13]。劇組也運用國王橋兵工廠英语Kingsbridge Armory[1][85]的空間,搭建了130英尺(40米)×400英尺(120米)時報廣場布景[86]。其他拍攝地點包含華盛頓高地[85]先驱广场[85]翠貝卡街區[1]、聖派崔克大教堂(St. Patrick's Cathedral)[1],以及無畏號航空母艦[1]。電影的結尾在紐澤西州拍攝[87]。本片的拍攝於2007年4月結束[88][89],重拍作業於2007年11月左右進行,主要著重於結局的部分[90]

撤離橋段

在本片的閃回英语Flashback (narrative)片段中,奈佛試圖將妻小送出城外避難,一路往布魯克林大橋前進,最終抵達聚集著一大群市民及軍人的突堤碼頭。該橋段的拍攝工程非常浩大,取景經理英语Location manager保羅·克萊默(Paul Kramer)從2006年7月就開始準備[71]。為了這個橋段,克萊默必須向多達14個政府單位徵求許可,根據紐約電影、戲劇與廣播市長辦公室英语Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre & Broadcasting(MOFTB)人員的說法,九一一袭击事件過後公眾安全更受重視,使得申請程序變多也變嚴格[71]東河原本沒有碼頭,劇組與當局合作搭建了一個臨時碼頭,先將一艘290英尺(88米)×40英尺(12米)的驳船固定在河床上,再用65英尺(20米)長的步道將之與河岸連接[影 14]

電影的故事發生在夏末,羅倫斯特意在圣诞节的時候才拍閃回片段,讓兩者產生對比[影 15]。最終劇組於2007年1月中旬[影 16]連拍六個晚上[71],動員了250名劇組人員,以及1000名臨時人員(包含160名國民衛隊成員)[71]。劇組徵得五角大楼的許可,僱用了隸屬於紐約陸軍國民警衛隊英语New York Army National Guard第69步兵團英语69th Infantry Regiment (New York)[影 17]。士兵們在拍攝期間擔任引導的角色,就如同執行真正的疏散行動一般[影 18]。劇組向軍方調用軍事設備並支付運輸費用[影 19],包含UH-60黑鹰直升机[影 20]、幾台悍馬[72]和三台史崔克裝甲車[72](首次於電影中出現[影 21]美國海岸防衛隊也提供了直升機和船隻[影 22],包含一台HH-65A 海豚直升機(接走奈佛妻女的直升機[影 23])、一艘110英尺(34米)長的快艇英语United States Coast Guard Cutter、一艘41英尺(12米)長的多功能艇英语41-foot Utility Boat, Large,以及兩艘25英尺(7.6米)長的小型應對艇(Response Boat)[72]。現場也有劇組調來的計程車、警車、消防車和救護車[72]。奈佛抵達大橋之前的部分由第二攝製組沿著茂比利街一路拍攝[影 24],第二攝影組導演阿姆斯壯沿用了2005年電影《世界大战》中類似場景的拍攝方法,並將攝影機數量從8台增加至13台[影 25]。總結來說,劇組為了拍攝該橋段至少花費了500萬美元,可能是紐約當時耗資最鉅的電影拍攝工程[71]

對於片中的開車橋段,史密斯親自拍攝了20%的戲份[影 26]。奈佛飆車的戲在拍攝行程的第一天由第二攝影組拍攝[影 11],由史密斯的特技替身Randolph LeRoi駕駛紅色的谢尔比野马GT500[影 11][91],在封街的第五大道上以時速60英里(97公里)~70英里(110公里)奔馳[影 27]。劇組也使用名為「GO Mobile」的行動攝影車來輔助拍攝,史密斯坐在駕駛座上,但車子實際上是由行動攝影車上的特技人員远程操作[影 28]

本片的後期製作主要在洛杉磯的Sony Pictures Imageworks英语Sony Pictures Imageworks進行[43],視覺總監包含簡尼克·賽爾斯英语Janek Sirrs吉姆·伯尼英语Jim Berney大衛·紹布英语David Schaub與大衛·A·史密斯(David A. 在原著小說中,感染者們成了吸血鬼[9],但片中的黑暗獵人並不是傳統認知中的吸血鬼,在設定上他們的變異在於腎上腺不停作用[57]

片中的黑暗獵人[95]和被感染的犬隻[影 29]是借助CGI技術呈現。羅倫斯起初打算讓真人演員扮演黑暗獵人,這些演員包含舞者跑酷者,他們在拍攝時會進行假肢化妝[39]、剃光頭,渾身塗上白堊[95]。但進入拍攝一週後,羅倫斯認為效果不佳[39]、演員們看起來像一幫默劇演員[95],他也解釋道:「黑暗獵人必須表現出一種放棄的感覺,這種感覺不是半夜打著赤腳的人能表現出來的。而且他們的代謝相當旺盛,造成他們不斷地过度换气,你總不可能讓演員長時間這樣子做,會昏倒的。」[註 6][39]羅倫斯決定在後期製作時用CGI加工[39]。劇組將黑暗獵人的戲份延後拍攝,對之進行重新設計,原本的演員們則改穿动作捕捉服進行演出[95]。CGI的作法額外耗資數百萬美元,後製也被迫延長數週[39]。羅倫斯在2011年承認,當時的後製時間嚴重不足,導致黑暗獵人的CGI變成片中的主要敗筆[95]
