卡西格生于美国印第安纳州印第安纳波利斯[3]，儿时被学校老师艾德（Ed）及护士宝拉（Paula）收养[4][5][6][7][8]。2006年，卡西格从印第安纳波利斯的北中高中（英语：North Central High School (Indianapolis)）毕业，其后于同年6月及2007年9月间在美国陆军游骑兵第75团第1营（英语：1st Ranger Battalion）的特种作战小组服役。2007年4月至9月，卡西格在乔治亚州班宁堡接受军事训练，后被派驻到伊拉克，四个月后因伤退伍[9][10][11]。退伍后就读于汉诺威学院（英语：Hanover College），2009年毕业，之后于2011年到巴特勒大學深造，2012年毕业[9][12][13][14]。

后来，卡西格在叙利亚及黎巴嫩从事人道救援工作，2012年秋在叙利亚创办非政府组织特殊应急响应及援助（Special Emergency Response and Assistance）[15]，为叙利亚及黎巴嫩的难民提供医疗、物资、衣物及食物[8][12][16][17][18]。卡西格是受过训练的医学助理（英语：medical assistant）[19]。
