这款游戏在开发团队讨论另一个项目时产生，当时一位成员随口说了一句话，说这让他想起了《百戰百勝王》和《勇敢向前衝。从那时起，他就开始为后来的《糖豆人》创作宣传稿[1]。实际的角色设计灵感来自于vynal玩具的外观[2] 本作于2019年6月在E3上公布[3]，面向Microsoft Windows和PlayStation 4，于2020年8月4日发售[4]。在发布之前，官方宣布《糖豆人》将对PlayStation Plus会员免费[5]。
