《美國偶像》第九季於2010年1月12日在FOX播出。[2] Simon Cowell、Randy Jackson和Kara DioGuardi繼續作為評委，Ellen DeGeneres將替代Paula Abdul成為第四位評委。[1] Idol Gives Back也將在本季回歸，並將於2010年4月21日七強結果秀舉行。[3] 在第四季至第七季被使用的24強半決賽的形式也將在本季使用。[4] 本賽季將是Simon Cowell作為美國偶像評委的最後一個賽季。[5]

評委變動

賽季開始後，Paula Abdul並沒有出現在評委小組中。[6] 因為合同談判遇到的問題沒有被解決，Victoria Beckham、en:Mary J. Blige、Shania Twain、Katy Perry、Avril Lavigne、en:Joe Jonas、en:Neil Patrick Harris和en:Kristin Chenoweth在海選階段擔任了客串評委。[7][8][9][10] 在做出了利用客串評委的決定之後，FOX主席Peter Rice指出將於本季在一月播出之前尋找一位固定的第四評委，[11] 隨後在2009年9月9日Ellen DeGeneres確認，她將成為新的固定評委，並將參與在CBS電視城錄製的荷里活周比賽以及隨後的比賽。[12]

荷里活週

本季的荷里活周在柯達劇院舉行。Ellen DeGeneres在本環節正式出任美國偶像的評委。

荷里活周的第一、二天由181位參賽者（目前美國偶像網站顯示為172位參賽者[20]）各自進行了演唱，他們可以自行選擇是否使用樂器。[21]96位參賽者獲得了通過。

接下來，選手們依照要求進行了分組表演。71位參賽者獲得通過，進入到下一輪的獨唱表演。

根據在獨唱表演中的表現，評委將選手分為三組，並最終留下了兩組選手共計46名。最終，評委從這46名選手中選拔出了TOP 24的24名選手（12名女性、12名男性）。

準決賽

準決賽進程

在第四季至第七季被使用的24強半決賽的形式在本季使用。12名女選手、12名男選手每周分別進行比賽，並於每周的結果秀中淘汰得票墊底得兩名女選手和兩名男選手。進行三周準決賽後，形成6男6女組成的TOP 12陣容。
