《美國偶像》第九季于2010年1月12日在FOX播出。[2] Simon Cowell、Randy Jackson和Kara DioGuardi继续作为评委，Ellen DeGeneres将替代Paula Abdul成为第四位评委。[1] Idol Gives Back也将在本季回归，并将于2010年4月21日七强结果秀举行。[3] 在第四季至第七季被使用的24强半决赛的形式也将在本季使用。[4] 本赛季将是Simon Cowell作为美国偶像评委的最后一个赛季。[5]

评委变动

赛季开始后，Paula Abdul并没有出现在评委小组中。[6] 因为合同谈判遇到的问题没有被解决，Victoria Beckham、en:Mary J. 好萊塢週

本季的好莱坞周在柯達劇院举行。Ellen DeGeneres在本环节正式出任美国偶像的评委。

好莱坞周的第一、二天由181位参赛者（目前美国偶像网站显示为172位参赛者[20]）各自进行了演唱，他们可以自行选择是否使用乐器。[21]96位参赛者获得了通过。

接下来，选手们依照要求进行了分组表演。71位参赛者获得通过，进入到下一轮的独唱表演。

根据在独唱表演中的表现，评委将选手分为三组，并最终留下了两组选手共计46名。最终，评委从这46名选手中选拔出了TOP 24的24名选手（12名女性、12名男性）。

准决赛

准决赛进程

在第四季至第七季被使用的24强半决赛的形式在本季使用。12名女选手、12名男选手每周分别进行比赛，并于每周的结果秀中淘汰得票垫底得两名女选手和两名男选手。进行三周准决赛后，形成6男6女组成的TOP 12阵容。
