Beacon College
The Market Beacon Collage is an ambitious and energetic private college committed to providing high-quality professional education to the community. Its business mainly focuses on full-time day schooling from secondary four to seven students, and tuition for secondary students, and thematic courses that serve people from all walks of life. Under the Hong Kong education system, enrolling in a tutorial course is common among schoolchildren of all abilities; even brilliant students are eager to brush up on their exam techniques. The private education industry is expanding and competition is intense. Parents spend a great deal of time assessing educational establishments before deciding which is the best for their children. Tuition fees, teachers' qualifications, teaching materials, facilities, location, and even public examination tips and ancillary services are all taken into account before a final decision is made. What makes Beacon College outperform its rivals? Beacon's mission is to equip students not only with knowledge but also with an insight into social responsibility. It is dedicated to providing quality, gimmick-free education where knowledge always comes first.
Achievements Beacon College was recently awarded the “Quality Living Award, Hong Kong 2006” in the private institution category by the publication East Week. Every year, the assessment board of East Week nominates top performers among specific industries, and invites the public to vote. The awarding of this distinguished honour to Beacon College undoubtedly indicates that the public holds the college in high regard and appreciates the strong correlation between education and quality living. In other words, high-quality education is a pathway to a higher quality of life. Beacon College has recently received letters from Baptist University, the City University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, praising the college for producing quality students and for the dedication of its teaching and administration staff. At Beacon College's 10th anniversary in 1999, senior government officials and members of the Legislative Council extended their congratulations by generously writing endorsements in support of the college. The chancellors of the Polytechnic University and Lingnan University, as well as the vice-chancellor of Hong Kong University, also wrote testimonials to mark the college's anniversary.
History
Three experienced educators, namely Miss June Leung, Mr Richard Eng and Mr Wister Chan, founded Beacon College in 1989 in Yuen Long. Miss Leung, a graduate of Hong Kong University, has been teaching English for more than 16 years and is a published author and newspaper columnist. Mr Eng graduated from the Chinese University and has written over 16 English textbooks and reference books. He is also a contributor to the “English Street” column in the Hong Kong Economic Times. Mr Chan is the principal of Beacon College who is a member of a variety of charitable organisations like the Lions’ Club and district sports committees.
Thanks to the persistent and devoted efforts of the founders, Beacon College has evolved from its humble origins in a two-storey school in Yuen Long to 11 branches in Hong Kong today – Yuen Long, Tuen Mun, Sheung Shui, Tai Po, Mongkok, Wanchai, Causeway Bay, Ma On Shan, Tseung Kwan O, Shatin and Tsuen Wan – with a total staff of around 300. Beacon College now has a presence in all major districts of Hong Kong, providing a convenient service for students who have a busy daily agenda.
The Product Providing gimmick-free education is a distinct feature of Beacon College. The college offers a wide variety of courses targeting different groups such as students, adults and working people. Classes are conducted in well-equipped classrooms, computer rooms and a laboratory. Full-time day schooling: The objective is to provide all-round development for students. In addition to regular subjects, the college offers numerous extra-curricular activities, including workshops on personal growth and development, JUPAS seminars and job interview techniques. Individual counselling is also available to help students resolve personal problems. Tuition: The objective is to focus on developing students' examination skills and enriching their knowledge in the subjects they enroll in. Beacon College offers regular courses, summer courses and intensive courses to students. The college also provides free practice to help students polish their oral English, and this arrangement has won applause and support from students who agree that this is one of the strengths that give Beacon College an edge over the competition. Thematic courses: Courses such as computer studies, workplace English, advanced writing for university students and working people, SBA course, LCC&I, TOEFL, IELTS, grammar, and languages (including Japanese, Putonghua, and French) are what make Beacon College so different from its competitors in the market. No other educational institutes in Hong Kong are currently providing such a diversity of courses to suit Hong Kong people's needs. Curriculum innovation: It is Beacon's firm belief that every student has a penchant for something. Therefore, Beacon College constantly explores new and better ways of reviewing and improving its curriculum. A brand new advanced certificate programme in Sports and Recreation Management, which will be launched soon, is a good example. The programme aims to provide a course of study that focuses on encouraging each student to achieve his/her unique potential and to become a productive member of society. After completing the programme, students should have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of health, recreation, marketing, management and various languages. In addition, Beacon College has identified a growing demand from university students who want to improve their English to help them secure a better job. It started an English course for undergraduates, making it the first college to operate courses beyond the secondary curriculum. In another development, Beacon College has employed a famous former university lecturer to teach economics. This was a hot topic of discussion in the local press, and shows the determination of the college's management board to provide the best quality of teaching for students. Beacon College does not confine itself to the academic field and is now turning its attention to the beauty business. It wants to establish a joint venture with a local beauty and styling institution to offer courses in this expanding area.
Recent Developments Beacon College has an excellent track record in opening new centres. Its expansion strategy includes the opening of new centres in Shatin and Tsuen Wan and it plans to set up to five more centres in the next three years. In the long term, the college is seeking opportunities to collaborate with overseas institutions in Britain, China and Japan. Beacon wants to invite high profile educators to join the College. Dr. Joe Chan of the School of Economics and Finance from Hong Kong University quit his university post and joined Beacon College recently. His decision clearly reflects that the excellent reputation that Beacon College has established in the field of education.
Promotion While word of mouth is important, Beacon also believes that in today's highly competitive market it is important to advertise a company's products. Beacon's advertisements can be seen in newspapers and on television as well as the KCRC and the MTR. Its teachers are also regularly invited to be guests at seminars and on TV and radio prgrammes.
Brand Values Beacon, as the name implies, is a lighthouse. It guides anxious students towards the right goals, and provides assistance for students to achieve success. Beacon College’s blue and yellow logo represents brightness and energy, underlining the company's commitment to “leading its students to embrace a bright future”. All in all, Beacon has a fine reputation for offering high-quality programmes. It stands for the dissemination of knowledge and innovation in teaching, reflecting its motto “knowledge always comes first”.
Things you didn't know about Beacon College Over the past 17 years, around 250,000 students have attended courses offered by Beacon College. Beacon College is the first educational institute to invite famous artistes and singers (eg, Joey Yung, Twins, Boyz, Christine Ng, Anita Yuen, Stephanie Cheng, Nicholas Tse, Lau Ho Lung) to officiate at the opening ceremonies of its new centres and participate in extra-curricular activities such as karaoke contests and picnics. Beacon College has the honour of inviting Legislative Council members, District Board members, university professors and celebrities to speak at the annual speech day. Those guests have included Legislative Council members Mr Tsang Yok-shing, Mr Cheung Hok-ming (JP) and Assistant Professor at City University Dr Kwok Chi-wai. Beacon College’s football team were runners-up in the 2005-06 Inter-school Football Competition in their first season of competition, showing that the college's students are not only intellectually bright but also gifted at sport.
