Astatine

Astatine is a halogen. Its symbol is At and its atomic number is 85.

Compared to iodine, astatine is relatively metallic. Compared to iodine, its chemical reactiveness is low.

Astatine was first created in 1940. It was created by bombarding a target of Bismuth with a stream of particles. Astatine is also formed by the radio decay of Uranium and of Thorium.

Isotopes

There are 20 known isotopes of At. Each is radioactive. The longest isotope half life is 8.1 hours. Therefore it is estimated that the total Astatine content of the earth's crust is no less than 50 grams.
