The Zhengtong era was the Chinese era used by the Emperor Yingzong, the sixth emperor of China's Ming dynasty, during his first reign, from 18 January 1436 (Template:Zhi; '1st day of the 1st month of the 1st year of the Zhengtong era') until his deposition on 22 September 1449 (Template:Zhi; '6th day of the 9th month of the 14th year of the Zhengtong era'). On 1 September 1449 (Template:Zhi; '15th day of the 8th month of the 14th year of the Zhengtong era'), Emperor Yingzong was captured at the Tumu Crisis. On 22 September, the Jingtai Emperor ascended to the throne and continued to use the era until 13 January 1450 (Template:Zhi; '30th day of the 12th month of the 14th year of the Zhengtong era'). The following day, 14 January 1450 (Template:Zhi; '1st day of the 1st month of the 1st year of the Jingtai era'), the era was changed to the Jingtai era.[1][2]
The Zhengtong era was also used by King Sejong of Joseon,[3][a] as well as by kings Shō Hashi, Shō Chū, Shō Shitatsu, and Shō Kinpuku of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
