Alive 2007 is the second live album by the French electronic music duo Daft Punk, released on 19 November 2007 by Virgin Records. It features the duo's performance at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy arena in Paris on 14 June 2007 during their Alive 2006/2007 tour.[1][2] The set features an assortment of Daft Punk's music, incorporated with synthesizers, mixers and live effects.[3]
The physical release in North America was delayed to 4 December 2007 due to production problems,[4] but the album later became available as a download on 20 November 2007, and was released in the United Kingdom on 25 February 2008.[5] The album won a Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album in 2009.[6] A special edition of the album was released that includes the encore from the Alive 2007 tour on a second disc. It also includes a 50-page book containing photographs from the tour taken by DJ Falcon.[7]
Background
[編輯]Alive 2007 comes from Daft Punk's performance at their Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy show on 14 June 2007, during their Alive 2006/2007 tour.[7] For the performance, Daft Punk used Ableton Live software on "custom made super-computers"[3] controlled remotely with Behringer BCR2000 MIDI controllers and JazzMutant Lemur touchscreen pads. They also used Minimoog Voyager RME[3] units, which, with the mixers, allowed them to "mix, shuffle, trigger loops, filter, distort samples, EQ in and out, transpose or destroy and deconstruct synth lines". The majority of the equipment was stored away during the live sets within offstage towers.[3]
Daft Punk performed reworked and remixed versions of many of their most popular tracks;[8] for example, they mixed vocal elements from "Too Long" with new music,[9] and mixed elements of "Television Rules the Nation" with "Crescendolls", "Around the World" with "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" and "Superheroes" with "Human After All".[10] The use of music from Human After All, which had received mixed reviews, prompted critics to reconsider the album.[11]
The performances for the Alive 2007 tour were an expansion of Daft Punk's 2006 live sets. Noted additions include elements of the tracks "Burnin'" and "Phœnix" as well as an encore.[9] Bangalter explained that the 2006 sets were initially designed for performances within larger festivals, but later refined to accommodate Daft Punk-specific shows. "The goal was to try and bring a complete global experience to the audience."[12] The introduction for the live show featured the five-note sequence used in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.[13]
The album includes elements of the Busta Rhymes song "Touch It", the original version of which was produced by Swizz Beatz featuring a sample of "Technologic". Also featured are elements of Gabrielle's "Forget About the World", the original version of which was remixed by Daft Punk for her single. The encore of the Alive 2007 set features Bangalter's side projects: Stardust's "Music Sounds Better with You" and Together's self-titled track "Together".[1]

On the review aggregator Metacritic, Alive 2007 has a score of 78 out of 100, indicating "generally favourable reviews."[25] Pitchfork regarded it as "the Ultimate Daft Punk Mixtape", finding that songs from Human After All had been "constantly improved and born anew" for the live set.[22] The sentiment was also shared by AllMusic, stating that "It has the feel of a greatest-hits-live concert, but energized by Daft Punk's talents at weaving songs in and out of each other."[15] AllMusic considered it weaker than Alive 1997.[15] A review by The Star noted that the release and Daft Punk's concurrent tours cumulatively restored the duo's reputation following the mixed reception for Human After All.[26]
Dave de Sylvia of Sputnikmusic gave the album a score of four stars out of five and said, "Despite a few individual disappointments, Alive 2007 is as exciting a collection of music as any released this year."[27] Entertainment Weekly felt that the live crowd enhanced the positive mood of the performance.[18] Rolling Stone stated that Alive 2007 "loses some of the essential experience" of attending the live Daft Punk events.[23] The Boston Phoenix also felt that the album package would have benefited from more video content, expressing that a key factor of the live show was its implementation of visual elements.[17] In his first positive review for a Daft Punk album, Robert Christgau believed that a full video representation was avoided because "too much scale, flesh and bodily effluvia would be lost."[20] Thomas Bangalter expressed his reasons of not releasing a DVD by stating "the thousands of clips on the internet are better to us than any DVD that could have been released."[22]
On 3 December 2008, Alive 2007 and its single "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" received Grammy Awards nominations for Best Electronic/Dance Album and Best Dance Recording, respectively.[28] Both the album and the single were announced as winners during the 51st Grammy Awards pre-telecast ceremony.[29]

Vinyl editions
[編輯]In December 2014, two vinyl editions of the album were released.[50] The first being standard black dual LPs and the second being a limited edition collectors boxset. The boxset edition was shipped along with a reissue Alive 1997 vinyl with stickers, Dual Alive 2007 Vinyls in white in a threefold sleeve and a separate white LP with the 'Encore'. Also included is a large hardback 52-page photo book, Alive 2007 concert pass replica, Daft Punk printed slipmat and a download card to download digital versions of the songs.

Alive 2006/2007 was a concert tour by French electronic music duo Daft Punk. The world-spanning tour was their first as a duo since 1997, as well as being the duo's final tour. While the 2006 concerts were not given a formal title, the 2007 performances were advertised as "Alive 2007". The 2006 performances and 2007 tour as a whole was later retroactively named "Alive 2006/2007".[1]
The tour was acclaimed, and is credited for bringing dance music to a wider audience, especially in North America. A live album, Alive 2007, was released in November 2007.
History
[編輯]The visuals of the tour were set up by XL Video.[2] The company provided eight-core Mac Pro units running Catalyst v4 and Final Cut Pro. Daft Punk approached the company with their visual concept for the shows. "They came to us with a pretty fixed idea of what they wanted", said head of XL Video, Richard Burford. "They wanted to mix live video with effects. Using the eight-core Mac Pros, we were able to take in eight digital sources and treat them as video streams. Then they could use Catalyst to coordinate the video with lighting effects and add their own effects in on the fly. The final digital video streams ran to LED screens."[2]
At the start of 2006, Daft Punk announced plans for a number of special summer shows. On 29 April, Daft Punk performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival where they received a jubilant reception for their first U.S. performance since 1997.[3] Thomas Bangalter had initially been reported as saying that there would be a DVD of their recent live set.[4] He later emphasized his reluctance for such a release, as the duo felt that online amateur videos of their performances were more compelling than anything captured professionally.[5] In an interview with the Miami Herald Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo stated that their 11 November appearance at the Bang Music Festival was their final for 2006 and that Daft Punk would conduct more performances in the future.[6] The band later specified a date for a live show at Bercy, Paris for June 2007.[7] Also reported were dates at the Wireless Festival and RockNess in June, the Oxegen festival in July and Lollapalooza in August.[8][9][10][11] Daft Punk then announced a world tour, Alive 2007.[7]
Daft Punk played at the RockNess Festival by the banks of Loch Ness, Scotland on 10 June 2007 as the headline act in the 10,000 capacity Clash tent. To the crowd's displeasure, the show was delayed, but the crowd gave the duo a jubilant welcome when they appeared. Part of the tent was removed to allow thousands of people outside to see the show.[12] On 16 June, Daft Punk headlined the third day of the O2 Wireless Festival.[13]
Daft Punk headlined Stage 2/NME Stage at the Oxegen music festival on 8 July 2007. Their live set was preceded by a showing of the trailer for the film Daft Punk's Electroma.[14][15] Four days later, the duo played at Traffic Torino Free Festival in Parco della Pellerina in Turin, Italy.[16]
Daft Punk headlined the AT&T stage on 3 August 2007, the first night of the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago. Their show there was praised by Pitchfork, which wrote that it "was a much-needed reminder of the still-potent power of communicative pop."[17] On 5 August they performed at the International Centre in Toronto followed by a 9 August performance at KeySpan Park in Brooklyn, New York.[18] The duo also headlined the Vegoose festival in Las Vegas on 27 October. They appeared at the festival along with bands Rage Against the Machine, Muse and Queens of the Stone Age.[7] At the end of October, Daft Punk performed in Mexico City.[19] The duo also performed on Friday 2 November 2007 at the Arena Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico and Guadalajara.[20]
Modular Records announced that Daft Punk would appear in Australia for an event in December 2007 called Never Ever Land.[21] The announcement addressed years of speculation on whether Daft Punk would visit Australia for live performances. Daft Punk were supported by their regular acts SebastiAn and Kavinsky at the appearances, which had been announced as an extension to the Alive 2007 tour.[7] Never Ever Land toured to Melbourne at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Perth at the Esplanade, Brisbane at the Riverstage and finally Sydney at the Sydney Showground Main Arena.[22] A Triple J interview with Pedro Winter (Busy P) revealed that Daft Punk's Sydney appearance on 22 December would be their final show for 2007 and the last to feature the pyramid light scheme.[23] Tickets for the Australian tour sold more quickly than for any Daft Punk-related event in their history.[24]
A live album, Alive 2007, which featured the group's performance at the Palais Omnisports Bercy in Paris, was released in November 2007.[25] The album won the Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album in 2009.
Legacy
[編輯]The tour was acclaimed.[26] The Times described the set as a "memorable sensory spectacle, both dazzling and deafening" and ThisisLondon declared it "an almost faultless set of relentless electro euphoria".[13][27] NME wrote that the performance was "a robotic spectacular", while Shoutmouth described the set as "typically triumphant".[14][15] The tour is credited for bringing dance music to a wider audience, especially in North America.[28][29] The Guardian journalist Gabriel Szatan likened it to the Beatles' 1964 performance on The Ed Sullivan Show, which brought British rock and roll to the American mainstream.[28]

It then grew during the early 2000s, defining itself through its assortment of parties, artists, and the "electronic, rock-leaning dance music" that became known as the "Modular sound". However, in 2015, a lawsuit filed by BMG Rights Management pitied the label against UMA, with UMA originally winning in July against owner Pavlovic, but the courts overturned the decision in October towards Pavlovic's favor. Thereafter, Pavlovic resigned in March 2016, leaving the label under renovations.

Human After All is the third studio album by French electronic music duo Daft Punk, first released on 14 March 2005 through Virgin Records. Unlike their previous studio album Discovery (2001), whose sound was inspired by disco and garage house and produced over the period of two years, Human After All was more minimalistic and improvisational with a mixture of heavier guitars and electronics, and was produced in six weeks.
Human After All received mixed reviews from critics, who derided its minimalistic, repetitive nature and its six-week production time. However, the singles "Robot Rock" and "Technologic" charted in several countries, while the title track charted in France. Daft Punk incorporated the songs into their Alive 2006/2007 tour, which received critical acclaim. Human After All reached number one on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart, and was nominated for the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album.

《Face to Face》is a song by French electronic music duo Daft Punk, featuring vocals and co-production by American house music producer Todd Edwards. It was released as the fifth single from their 2001 album Discovery. Promotional 12" singles were released for those who pre-ordered the 2003 remix album Daft Club, and a CD single containing a remix of the song by French producer Demon was released commercially. As part of Discovery, the song appears in the film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, and the section of the film in which the song appears serves as its music video. The song topped the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in 2004.
背景
[編輯]Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk had met Todd Edwards before releasing their 1997 debut album, Homework. They wanted to collaborate with Edwards but struggled to convince him due to their then-unknown status.[2] While the collaboration didn't materialize, Daft Punk cited Edwards as an influence in their track "Teachers." They reconnected in 1999, meeting at Edwards' parents' house in New Jersey, where Edwards had his home studio.[3][4]
After gathering potential samples, the three worked on the track, with Bangalter aligning the samples to the same key. They laid down a drum loop, with Edwards and Bangalter playing the samples while Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo provided verbal input. One of the samples, featuring the lyrics "Christopher Robin," resembled the words "face to face" and inspired the song's title.[4] After recording the base of the track, Daft Punk flew Edwards to Paris twice to complete the work at Bangalter's home studio.[3] During the second trip, they instructed him to sing with a raspier tone, "like the guy from Foreigner."[5][6] The completed song contains Edwards' first two vocal takes, layered to create a doubling effect. Bangalter commented, "Todd Edwards sings sometimes, but not like that. I think we were all very excited and surprised by the way he could sing this song."[7]
The duo expressed gratitude for collaborating with Edwards, noting that it allowed them to branch out creatively. They remarked that "we are free to explore other areas. It will be interesting to see what we'll do next. Now we can work with other people."[2] They would later reunite with Edwards for the song "Fragments of Time", from their 2013 album Random Access Memories.[3]

[編輯]"Face to Face" is composed in a common time of 4/4, with a tempo of 118 BPM in the key of G-sharp minor. As the album was originally conceived to accompany a live-action film, with "Face to Face" being intended for a battle scene, Edwards aimed to write lyrics that could resonate whether sung to another person, one's own reflection, or to God.[4] According to Bangalter, the preceding track "Short Circuit" symbolized shutdown, followed by a moment of awakening to face reality.[8]

[編輯]"Face to Face" was released as a limited promotional single in 2003, two years after its inclusion on Discovery. It has been featured in several lists highlighting the top singles by Daft Punk and Todd Edwards. Mixmag placed it 30th among their top 33 songs, while Los Angeles Times ranked the song as the fourth greatest moment from the duo out of ten.[7][9] In reviews of the album, John Bush of AllMusic described "Face to Face" as "[twisting] his trademarked split-second samples and fully fragmented vision of garage into a dance-pop hit that could've easily stormed the charts in 1987," while Stephen Dalton of NME described the song as "slice'n'dice Shannon-style clunk-funk."[1][10] In a retrospective on the duo's career, Jeffrey Rosen of The Emory Wheel called the song "incredibly forward-thinking, perfecting the aesthetics of future-funk and vaporwave more than a decade before their real conception as a genre," alongside "High Life."[11]

[編輯]"Face to Face" debuted on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart on 17 January 2004, reaching the number one spot on 20 March 2004, before being overtaken by Britney Spears's "Toxic" the following week.[9] The song stayed on the chart for a total of 16 weeks.[12] Edwards received a framed Gold record for his contributions because of the song's inclusion in Discovery.[13][14] Edwards himself was unaware that the single reached number one, due to a strained relationship with his manager.[15]

[編輯]"Face to Face" is featured in the 2003 animated film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, which serves as a visual realization of Discovery. The film was written by Daft Punk in collaboration with Cédric Hervet and directed by Kazuhisa Takenouchi, Hirotoshi Rissen, and Daisuke Nishio under the visual supervision of Leiji Matsumoto.[16] The "Face to Face" segment follows the aftermath of the extraterrestrial pop band The Crescendolls seemingly subduing the villain, Earl de Darkwood, at his manor. Construction crews unearth the space vessel piloted by Shep, who had rescued the band from enslavement and brainwashing by Darkwood, who had disguised himself as their manager. Police investigate the record company the band had been signed to and search every part of Darkwood Manor. A news report depicts montage scenes of an operation to send The Crescendolls back to their home planet using Shep's ship. The report also explains the situation, revealing that The Crescendolls were not the only group to have experienced this. One of the band members, Octave, is shown in a hospital, recovering from an earlier altercation with security guards at the record company. As the band prepares to leave Earth, people wave goodbye to them from all over the world.[17]

Todd Edward Imperatrice (born December 9, 1972[1]), known professionally as Todd Edwards, is an American garage house record producer, DJ and singer. Edwards has been an influence on electronic music, being an inspiration for the French house duo Daft Punk and helping create the UKG genre.[2][3]
He began his career producing primarily for New York's Nervous Records in the 1990s, including under aliases such as the Messenger and the Sample Choir.[1] Edwards' music is known for its influence on the UK garage scene that developed in the United Kingdom in the mid-1990s.[4]
Beginning with his 1993 single "Guide My Soul," Edwards helped pioneer the speed garage genre.[1] His work is known for his "innovative blend of rhythmic, cut-and-paste vocal samples, rubbery basslines, and slapping percussion,"[1] which showcased an intensive sampling and remixing technique in which vocals are chopped into micro-sized sections.[4] His 1994 single "Saved My Life" became a club hit in the UK.[1] In 1999, Nervous collected several of his productions on the compilation Todd Edwards' Nervous Tracks and i! Records released the LP Prima Edizione, collecting several more tracks from this era.[1]
Edwards has remixed hundreds of artists, including Wildchild, St. Germain, Benjamin Diamond, Justice, Klaxons and Dimitri from Paris. Edwards has also collaborated with Daft Punk, co-producing and contributing vocals on the songs "Face to Face" (2001) and "Fragments of Time" (2013); the latter won him a Grammy Award for its inclusion on that year's winning album Random Access Memories.
