Hi, Missionedit! My name is Brambleberry of RiverClan, and I noticed that you were looking for someone to adopt you through the Adopt-a-user program. It's your lucky day! I am an experienced user and adopter and would like to take you under my wing. Please respond on my talk page if you are interested and I will set up your adoption classroom. <font face="webdings"><font color="#007FFF">ö</font></font><font face="segoe script">[[User:Brambleberry of RiverClan|<font color="dodgerblue">Brambleberry</font>]] [[User talk:Brambleberry of RiverClan|<font color="#9C9C9C">of</font>]] [[Special:Contributions/Brambleberry of RiverClan|<font color="dodgerblue">RiverClan</font>]]</font> 22:21, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

If you don't know how to add something to your watchlist, it's simple. There should be a hollow star on the same line that the "Read" and "Edit" tabs are. It will either be right after the heart or, if you don't have the heart, right after "View history". If you click that star, it will turn blue and a little notification will come up. Then if you go to "Watchlist" above that, you can see the last edit made. <font face="webdings"><font color="#007FFF">ö</font></font><font face="segoe script">[[User:Brambleberry of RiverClan|<font color="dodgerblue">Brambleberry</font>]] [[User talk:Brambleberry of RiverClan|<font color="#9C9C9C">of</font>]] [[Special:Contributions/Brambleberry of RiverClan|<font color="dodgerblue">RiverClan</font>]]</font> 20:50, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

== Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Dimitri Papadimos ==

Dear Missinedit,
Pls find below a "talk" with Help desk...and the answer from Howicus...

...I am very disappointed with the stereotype rejection response I am receiving "not adequately supported by reliable sources" It would be more helpful if you can pinpoint which of the 10 references are not "reliable"...I am trying to create and English version of an article already in an another language already in wikipedia...Yani papadimos (talk) 19:14, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

:Well, the first three references aren't about Papadimos, but rather about other photographers. Those sources don't show that Papadimos was notable. The fourth and fifth sources just show that his photos have been used on websites and in books, but that's not very noteworthy by itself. The sixth source is about one exposition in a small, non-notable gallery. The seventh source is another book that Papadimos did the photo for. The eight source just mentions Papadimos in passing, not establishing his notability. The ninth and tenth sources are books by Papadimos, which don't establish his notability either. Howicus (talk) 22:28, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

I must be doing something wrong...but what I cant understand I have offered all information about Dimitri Papadimos who as a photographer has contributed his work to various very important writers from 1950 to 2000. These books number over 30 from notable writers such as
Robin Maugham, Lord Kinross (Patrick Balfour), Lawrence, A.W., Philip Sherrard, John Campbell, Laurence Durrell, Kevin Andrews, Francis Noel Baker, Hassan Fathy, James Steel, an MacNiven and various other Greek writers etc. His own publications "Greece: A vanishing culture" and last year the ELIA(Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive)/MIET (National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation)were his Archive was donated hosted an exhibition of over 250 photos and published a 567 page with 626 of his photos expanding over 50 year from the War the Middle East, Egypt, Cyprus and Greece. I dont know how much more I must offer to establish his "notability" which I dont think I need to do so for he is already well known...My interest in creating the page in English of a person who is already mentioned in the Greek Wiki is only to enrich the Wikipedia pages and cross ref with notable personalities such as [[Austen_Harrison|Austen St.Barbe Harrison]] whose adopted family was that of Dimitri Papadimos from 1930 to the time of his death 1976. If the information is there and there is only the technical presentation is wrong I would appreciate the help for if I knew how to authorize this article I might be seated on the other. Thank you in advance for your interest and help[[User:Yani papadimos|Yani papadimos]] ([[User talk:Yani papadimos|talk]]) 09:45, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
: Well, I believe the problem is that none of your in-text sources really support the information that given about Dimitri Papadimos. The first 3 sources, athough written by very notable and reputible authors, do not say anything about (quoting from the Dimitri article) "After the war, using Cairo as his base, he traveled in the Mediterranean region and Africa often accompanying British authors, such as Robin Maugham, Peter G.Burton and Lawrence Durrell." If you read those books without knowing anything about Papadimos, you would not know that he traveled ''often'' with the authors, but only for the few times mentioned in the books. <br>
:The fourth source does not say that (quote article) "Papadimos' favorite themes were people, as Greek poet Constantine Cavafy", but only that he provided a photo for an article about Cavafy. If, in using this source, you were only trying to provide a link to who Cavafy was, you can make an internal link to Cavafy's article on Wikipedia by placing double brackets around his name like this: <nowiki>[[Constantine Cavafy]]</nowiki> <br>
:Number five does not show that (quote article) "His photographs illustrated magazines and books of travel literature.", but only that he provided pictures for ''one'' book. Six shows that Papadimos displayed his work in Cairo at one point, but does not show that "he presented his work in exhibitions ''mainly'' in Cairo". Seven shows that he took some photographs of the land in Greece, but not "''extensive'' photographs of the land". Eight only just mentions Papadimos and says nothing about him "working in the production of numerous motion pictures". <br>
:I'll have to finish my response later, sorry. ~ [[User:Missionedit|Anastasia ]] ([[User talk:Missionedit#top|talk]]) 20:58, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
::Dear Missionedit|Anastasia
Thank you for your advise...I am in the process of re-writing the whole article...I will not submit until I receive feed back for you...tks[[User:Yani papadimos|Yani papadimos]] ([[User talk:Yani papadimos|talk]]) 12:30, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
:::Here I am again! So, as you can tell from what I wrote above, the problem is not that your sources are not reliable, but that they do not directly support the text. A problem that is connected with the sources is that the current ''sources'' do not show that Dimitri was notable enough to have an article on Wikipedia. Your article states (and I have not doubt it is true) that he was an important photographer that had his works in many famous books and magazines (which is notable), but if you looked just at the sources without the article, it would look as if he was insignificant, as there is little mention of him in the sources and very little info about him.
:::Does all that make sense? I know frustrating that can be. ~ [[User:Missionedit|Anastasia ]] ([[User talk:Missionedit#top|talk]]) 19:30, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
Dear Missionedit|Anastasia
I have re-written the article and have tried to follow your advise. There are over 30 books from various notable writers that have him as the "Contributing" Photographer. I have stated the books, writer, publisher year and when available ISBN number. Should I scan the books? Another thing these books go back to the 1950's there are not very many published reviews, there are only mentions in the Writers Wiki page and I have linked the two...Pls keep pointing out weak points...tks [[User:Yani papadimos|Yani papadimos]] ([[User talk:Yani papadimos|talk]]) 19:59, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
:You don't need to scan the book sources, and as for weak points, the main one I can see is that there a lot of links to pages outside of Wikipedia (called external links) in the article text. That is really a no-no in Wikipedia articles. I believe that most of the external links can be turned into internal links (links to pages on Wikipedia) and that all the others can be moved to the "External links" section near the the bottom of the page, as I can see that you have mostly done. Would you like some help with this, or can you manage? ~ [[User:Missionedit|Anastasia ]] ([[User talk:Missionedit#top|talk]]) 02:44, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Anastasia, tks...are you talking about the book links (to google?) can you show me one or two and I will follow your instructions...tks[[User:Yani papadimos|Yani papadimos]] ([[User talk:Yani papadimos|talk]]) 07:51, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Anastastia, Hello again...I think I have made the changes, internal links and references in the Article "Dimitri Papadimos" with external links only to the Books...I hope this is now enough...tks [[User:Yani papadimos|Yani papadimos]] ([[User talk:Yani papadimos|talk]]) 09:06, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
:Very good job fixing the links! The pretty much the only thing is that there should only be a link to something or someone the first time they are mentioned. For instance, the first time I mention [[Robin Maugham]], his name is a link, but after that, his name does not need be linked because there is already a link to him on the page. Also, is it possible for you to provide references that support the info given about Dimitri's early life? That would really help. Almost done! :) ~ [[User:Missionedit|Anastasia ]] ([[User talk:Missionedit#top|talk]]) 19:08, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Anastasia, Hi!
I can add more details about Dimitri's life but the references are in Greek as most of the official documents that prove his rank and travel during WWII are in Greek and all have been donated to ELIA/MIET archives. I did not mention his involvement in films, such as "Guns on Navarone". Here we have an English letter from Carl Forman to Dimitri as a thanks for his contribution, but it is mentioned (in Greek)in the book "Dimitiri Papadimos". The book that was published on the occasion of his exhibition in Athens 2012 is over 500 pages with over 600 photos and is the major source is unfortunately in Greek. Anyway tks...if you have any more suggestions I would gladly appreciate your time...tks [[User:Yani papadimos|Yani papadimos]] ([[User talk:Yani papadimos|talk]]) 10:03, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
:Would you mind if I did a final copyedit (fix grammar, spelling, obvious problems) to the article before you submit it for creation? ~ [[User:Missionedit|Anastasia ]] ([[User talk:Missionedit#top|talk]]) 17:16, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Anastasia...Hello again!
Saw your intervention and I can see the weak point of "Early Life" pls find below some information that might be of help:

Dimitri Papadimos was born in Cairo, Egypt of Greek parents in 1918[1]. His father, Ioannis, was from mainland Greece, Pelion, and his mother, Maria, from the Greek island of Imbros. They had immigrated to Egypt after WWI. His father worked at the Greek Consulate in Cairo. His mother Maria died one year after his birth. His father re-married in 1921, Persephone, with whom he had another child, Antonis. Dimitri Papadimos studied at the Ambetios school in Cairo until the death of both his parents in 1936.
Papadimos' acquaintance and connection with the British architect Austen St. Barbe Harrison, whom he met in Cairo in the 1937, most probable at the house of his school friend Pierre son of Hassan Rashed (archeologist and curator of the Islamic Art Museum).
Note: The only proof that we have is a hand written note by Dimitri, in which he describes his love for Arab Art was due to the frequent visits to the house of his school friend Pierre son of the Curator of the Islamic Art Museum in Cairo. There is also a letter from Austen Harrison (with the archive of the IAA) that places Austen in Cairo 1937 when he was researching “Islamic Art” so as to incorporate some motifs into his architecture. (All this comes from the Biographical Note in the book published on the occasion of Dmitri’s “post mortem” exhibition 2012 by the MIET - NATIONAL BANK OF GREECE CULTURAL FOUNDATION, which I am translating…).

Your knowledge and comments would be appreciated...tks [[User:Yani papadimos|Yani papadimos]] ([[User talk:Yani papadimos|talk]]) 08:20, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
:Good point, but the Early life section should not be expanded to much, seeing there are really no sources to support much info. Do you happen to know all about his early life because you are related? If so, there should not be to much family history put in the article, as no one can verify it but Dimitri's relations. ~ [[User:Missionedit|Anastasia ]] ([[User talk:Missionedit#top|talk]]) 13:19, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
:I have finished my very basic copyedit on the article for now. I say that you submit it, to see what the reviewers have to say. A major problem that will probably come up is that you are closely related to Dimitri, and creating articles about relations is ''very'' discouraged on Wikipedia, and for a good reason, too. When these articles are made, one or both these problems arise: the article is biased, or it contains a lot of unverifiable information which is known only to the subject's family. You have done a very good job at avoiding the bias problem, but I'm afraid the second one is very prevalent. Well, let's just see how it goes! ~ [[User:Missionedit|Anastasia ]] ([[User talk:Missionedit#top|talk]]) 14:01, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Anastasia Hello again, I will not go into details, but what I must point out that the article does not contain any information only known to the "family"...the relation with Austen Harrison is a fact as it is sustained by correspondence of Austen Harrison's archive with the IAA (Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem) and as described in his own article with Wikipedia. The photos that I have provided from his personal photo archive which are in my possession (to which I hold the copyrights) are a testimony to Dimitri's connection friendly and professional with the various personalities the article mentions. As far as the reason I am posting the article is simple. A personality like Dimitri who for over 50 years through his work left a mark in modern Greek history should not go unnoticed. As I previously stated the article is not a publicity, as there is no reason for it as his archive is already with two very important Greek (ELIA/MIET) historical foundations. My wish was that an important Greek should be part of Wikipedia Encyclopedia...enough though...I would like to personally thank you here in writing as you were one of the few who really help me through your constructive comments and indications...tks again [[User:Yani papadimos|Yani papadimos]] ([[User talk:Yani papadimos|talk]]) 07:29, 13 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Frasznik, I'm sorry if I worried you. You have done a very good job with the sourcing in the article. When I placed the sources tag on your page, the reason was not that the article was not based off your sources, but merely because Biographies of Living Persons should general have more than a few sources, in case that the few sources referenced are biased or fake. However, you have done great job fixing the problem and adding more sources, so feel free to remove the tag at the top of the page. If you have any questions feel free to contact me. In addition to anything redlinked and a missing edit summary, look for an extreme addition or deletion of text. An extreme deletion of text would probably be anything over 1,000 bytes in the red, but an extreme addition is more like 100,000 in the green, which may indicate a fictionalized biography (believe it or not, some editor kept trying to add a fictionalized biography of a saint to that page over and over). <span style="font-family:webdings;"><span style="color:#007FFF;">ö</span></span><span style="font-family:segoe script;">[[User:Brambleberry of RiverClan|<span style="color:dodgerblue;">Brambleberry</span>]] [[User talk:Brambleberry of RiverClan|<span style="color:#9C9C9C;">of</span>]] [[Special:Contributions/Brambleberry of RiverClan|<span style="color:dodgerblue;">RiverClan</span>]]</span> 17:46, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

:You're very welcome! The [[Wikipedia:Manual of Style]] a great place to start learning about how to edit Wikipedia. It's kind of a long read, but worth it if you have the time. In the See also section at the bottom of the article there are a lot of other links to great pages to look at. Another thing you might want to check out is [[Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user]], a program where new users can get assigned "mentors" to teach them lessons and help them with any questions they might have. I was adopted by [[User:Brambleberry of RiverClan]] and recently graduated. == Tagging ==

Dear Anastacia, your tagging is pretty much welcome, though it serves for nothing once the problem continues there. Believe me darling, it takes a lot less time to fix the thing than to add another Xmas ball [[Luis de Olona|to the tree]]. I wander by Wiki and see things like "Unreferenced - June 2011" or worse "Multiple Issues (2008), Clean up Expert (2009), Content that violates Wikipedia policy will be deleted (2007)" all in one single page. Jump to the side of those who make a difference dear and be bold by fixing the problems yourself instead of telling others to do it... because you can, because you want, because you are ''Anastacia, the Great'' ...:) ! [[User:Krenakarore|<span style="font-family:monotype corsiva;font-size:1.2em;color:#960018">'''Krenakarore'''</span>]] [[User talk:Krenakarore|<span style="font-family:Monotype Corsiva;font-size:0.8em;color:#960018">''TK''</span>]] 07:58, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
:Dear Krenakarore, thank for being so polite when addressing this issue! It is so easy to get annoyed with others when they don't do what they should. The reason that I tag pages is because I patrol [[Special:NewPages]]. I ''do'' try to fix most problems, like sourcing when I can. The thing is, there are so many new pages coming in, I don't have time to fix most articles; so I just leave a tag there. All the new pages need to be reviewed asap so that vandalism articles can be deleted. What you say is true; I don't always fix everything that I could (although tagging an article is better than just leaving it as it is). I will try to work on this in the future. Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention! ~ [[User:Missionedit|Anastasia ]] ([[User talk:Missionedit#top|talk]]) 19:26, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

::The reason you are very special Anastacia, is because you are a human being, not a machine. Let machines do their daily work and make a difference by saving an article or two a day. Leaving a note is important, but your business card is even more. We all patrol pages here one way or another my dear, either referencing or expanding them, once we are all Users, not policemen. Adopt-a-user

Hi, Missionedit! My name is Brambleberry of RiverClan, and I noticed that you were looking for someone to adopt you through the Adopt-a-user program. It's your lucky day! I am an experienced user and adopter and would like to take you under my wing. Please respond on my talk page if you are interested and I will set up your adoption classroom. öBrambleberry of RiverClan 22:21, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Adoption classroom

As part of the adoption process, I like to provide my adoptees with classrooms where everything gets asked and answered. Your particular classroom is at User:Brambleberry of RiverClan/Adoption/Missionedit. I recommend that you add it to your watchlist.

If you don't know how to add something to your watchlist, it's simple. There should be a hollow star on the same line that the "Read" and "Edit" tabs are. It will either be right after the heart or, if you don't have the heart, right after "View history". If you click that star, it will turn blue and a little notification will come up. Then if you go to "Watchlist" above that, you can see the last edit made. öBrambleberry of RiverClan 20:50, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

General Theory of Everything/DNA speed through time

General Theory of Everything

The variable speed at which the DNA spiral travels through time and space results in several different effects:

a) Acceleration of gravity is proportionally slower from our point of view and presents a weakened force when compared to the rest of the lifeless universe. The diminished gravity experienced in water may be the reason behind the start of this process. Life is a watery business.

b) Galaxies, seeming to accelerate away from each other at the outer edges of space, don’t, it’s just that time is running slower for us compared to them.

c) We can actually see other planets with DNA cruising at the same rate and they appear to be dark, as light cannot travel through the shared timelines between us. It’s not slow enough. They look like black holes.

d) Approximately one sixth of the entire mass of the universe runs at our rate through time. The rest of it appears to be invisible as it runs at a faster rate and is commonly called dark matter.

e) Evolution. It is inevitable that creation should eventually come up with a being that is self-aware.

Conclusion As we can only see a sixth of the universe’s matter, we presumably get a sixth of the general gravity; chiefly because we spend a sixth of time in general space. I suppose it was always going to be that number.

Dear Anastasia, If you receive this theory could you get back to me on my talk page, I am completely new to how the encyclopaedia works and am having doubts. Kind regards, Michael David Howells (talk) 04:06, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

Dear Anastasia, Thank you very much for getting back to me and having read my nonsensical (I think you mean) theory. I suppose it is a bit different. I'll forget about it now for a while, anyway, I'm in rehearsal soon for 'Harvey' and I've got the 'Elwood' part, which is a lot of responsibility. I suppose I just wanted to get it across to someone for the record. If it is correct, of course, which is highly unlikely, then at least I tried at the time I had the idea. As it was for me a slightly religious journey on this one, with the three sixes, I hope that I can feel more peaceful now, having delivered it. Anastasia, if you happen to come across any scientific types and you think my theory would amuse them please do not hesitate to pass it on. Unless you think it's complete garbage, in which case, forget about it. Kind regards, signing off, Michael David Howells (talk) 07:44, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

GOCE Requests

Hi Missionedit. Thanks for helping out at the Guild of Copy Editors. When you finish a GOCE request, the thing to do is to mark it {{done}} in the line below where you marked it {{working}} before. A coordinator will come along and arhcive the request and delete it then. Please don't just delete the request yourself, as it makes it harder to archive, and we may even overlook it. Cheers, --Stfg (talk) 20:36, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Sorry Stfg, I didn't know that. Well, you live and learn. Am I suppose to do something about it?
No thanks, nothing more to do. No need to apologize, I just wanted to let you know how we do it, for future reference. Keep well, --Stfg (talk) 20:43, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

A7

Possibly the most misunderstood category at Speedy Deletion... A7 is for lack of significance, but the things that can be speedied under it are limited. Basically, it's people (King Johannes the Idiot of Upper Slobodia) and groups of people (The Church of the Invisible Hamster). Then there are named animals (Gertie the Dancing Ocelot). And web content (dancingocelot.com). And since just recently, we've added organised events (The Festival of the Dancing Ocelot). Note that Churches are not always churches. There are groups of people called churches, and buildings called churches. People, yes, A7 is OK. Buildings, no. Also, while dancingocelot.com is subject to A7, the file dancingocelot.gif that you can download from there isn't. (Actually, as I've made it all up, you can't anyway...) OK? Confused? Don't blame you. With churches, if the church has arms and legs, it's A7. If it's got a door and a roof, it's not A7. Don't be afraid to ask if you don't understand or do think we're being silly. Peridon (talk) 20:58, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

You had tagged Sør-Fron Church under the speedy criterion A7 - but it's a building type of church not a group of people type of church. For example, the Roman Catholic Church is a group of people, but St Peter's Basilica (which is a church) is a building. Churches that are groups of people can come under A7, but churches that are bricks and mortar can't. I was illustrating what could and couldn't be tagged A7 (lack of significance) with made-up examples so as not to offend any real people (or ocelots). Peridon (talk) 09:00, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

John Mason Clarke

Hi.

Please clarify why you tagged the John Mason Clarke article as you did? It is a brief article and already has sections. Praemonitus (talk) 02:00, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

John Mason Clarke is no doubt a very good article. I just thought that the "Biography" part could be divided into smaller sections to make it more accessible. Do you disagree? ~ Anastasia (talk) 02:09, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
My sense of the guidance from WP:BODY is that short sections are generally discouraged. As there are only four paragraphs in the Biography section, I don't feel that further sub-division would be beneficial in this regard. Once the article is expanded further, additional sections will then be needed. Praemonitus (talk) 02:13, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

Much Appreciated!!!

I see you flagged this page as having an unclear citation style. As with a book, each citation in the article names the source and page number, and links to the source description. This is a professional style that is fully compliant with WP style guidelines. What do you find unclear? Aymatth2 (talk) 02:26, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Well, it seemed unusual to me that you marked specific pages in the book without citing them in the text. I believe you are suppose to put book references in their own section, called Further Reading, if they are not cited in the text. Sorry if I disturbed you, it is really a very well written article over all. ~ Anastasia (talk) 02:48, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
The article is sourced from the cited book pages. The citations are in the References section below the text. Thus if you click on the link [1] to the first citation it takes you to the short citation: Lane-Poole 2004, p. 58. Click on that and you get the full description of the Lane-Poole book. This is the standard approach when citing multiple pages from one book. Each short citation of a page can refer to the same full description of the book itself. See Frank Bottrill for an example when there are about thirty links in the text leading to 10 citations that refer to only five sources: ten pages from the five sources are being cited, with most pages cited from several places in the text. steps to control masturbation

Hi, What are the steps to get rid of masturbation? Please answer my question. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sajjad143 (talkcontribs) 13:15, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

Sajjad, for one thing, this is a Wikipedia Talk Page and talk pages are not forums for discussion of just anything. When I said you you could ask me questions I ment that you could ask me any questions relating to Wikipedia. Continuing to use talk pages as forums for discussion of un-Wikipedia related subjects could result in your account being blocked. Another thing you should start doing is signing your posts with ~~~~ at the end. Do you have any questions related to Wikipedia? ~ Anastasia (talk) 18:49, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

How i can provide the references to my articles? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sajjad143 (talkcontribs) 15:25, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

A very good question. Everything that you to know about sourcing in articles can be found at Wikipedia:Citing sources. Sourcing is rather too complicated a process to write out a short how-to about, so why don't you check the page and see if it answers your questions first? Again, don't forget to sign your posts on talk pages with ~~~~. ~ Anastasia (talk) 19:10, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

Proper technique for editing a live stub article in userspace

Hi Anastasia! Thanks for welcoming me here. Overall, I seem to be doing pretty well for myself, finding most of the documentation and playing around in Userspace. For the most part, almost all the answers to my questions are already out there, I just need to search for them, and find time to read it all. There is one thing, however, that's leaving me perplexed. I think the reason for that, is that the editing model used for Wikipedia may not have anticipated my kind of usage though, in software development, it's done every day.

Generally, when you edit a code module in a large project that's under a revision control system (RCS, which is actually quite like a Wiki), what you do is first "check out" the code (like checking out a library book), edit it as much as you like, then "check it back in". It seems like Wikipedia has only half this model.

All the new user articles seem to be geared for creating brand new articles out of thin air. But it's much more likely, these days, that a new user, like myself, will want to expand an existing stub article into a full feature. I'm not talking about a minor edit. I mean essentially a whole new article, but built on an existing stub, rather than just thin air. I understand the idea of creating a new article in userspace, submitting the article for review, then moving it into mainspace. I think that's a very good model, giving newbies a chance to get their feet wet, taking as much time as they need, before the experienced folks start criticizing them, but then being able to get constructive comment when they're ready, working cooperatively with experienced editors. Excellent model, imho.

But what if you want to take a live stub into userspace (retaining the edit history), turning the ugly ducking into an ugly swan (Very rough draft, nowhere near finished! The majority of the stub text appears in the Transparent Anatomical Manikin (TAM) section.), submitting the article for review (thereby turning it into a beautiful swan) and then move it back into mainspace? The first move, live stub to userspace, (actually a copy, not a move) is known as a "check out" and the second move, userspace to finished article in mainspace, is known as a "check in". If I understand things correctly, WP only implements the "check in" part, but not the "check out".

Of course, one foreseeable shortcoming of this approach is that the live stub could be edited independently while the userspace copy is being developed. This can be avoided by placing a banner template indicating that an article has been "checked out", with a link to the userspace page, and recommending that proposed edits be discussed on the appropriate talk page. Another shortcoming is having one user monopolize a page for an indefinite time, but there are ways to control this.

The problem of not checking articles out is that the edit history of the original stub gets lost, like in my case. I actually stopped developing this article, once I realized about the edit history problem, so that I don't get myself in too deep into having to re-do it properly. I'm sure I'm not the first, nor the last, to join WP with an RCS mindset. I suspect it's been debated long and loud, but as a newbie, I'm blissfully ignorant of such debates. What has been the consensus on this issue?

Perhaps some of you experienced and wiser folk could create a page on expanding a stub article for newbies, with the model of editing in userspace and seeking review, like you currently do for new articles. As part of that idea, I noticed that the {{stub}} template links the words "expanding it" directly to the edit action, encouraging newbies to make their first draft on the live article. I'd think it should link, instead, to the article that I'm asking for someone to write, to guide us newbies on how to do this safely. Of course, anyone who really wants to, can just dive in, and directly click the edit tab. But the link on the template seems to beg for a how-to article. I know I could really use some guidance on how to do this properly.

Any thoughts / ideas / pages on this??

Thanks!!

Djdubay (talk) 20:22, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

Well, Djdubay, you have a very good question. Everyone is generally encouraged to edit and expand articles in the article's namespace. That takes care of the edit history problem. When you are expanding, you can use the {{under-construction}} template to let everyone know that you are working on it. If you are going to use this template, make sure that you are going to making changes to the article frequently, otherwise someone may remove the template.
As for pages, Wikipedia:Writing better articles should help a little with guidance. I don't know of any essays or debates on your your problem, but I would not be suprised at all if there are many that I am not aware of, as I have only been editing Wikipedia for 6 months :)
If you want a how-to page made, I would suggest that you contact one of the Wikipedia Administrators, such as User:SarahStierch or User:Heatherawalls for more advice, as that is not really my forte. Does that answer your question? ~ Anastasia (talk) 02:05, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
  • Not quite, but I definitely give you an A for effort. I hadn't realized you're a bit of a newbie, yourself. I'm already starting to cause a bit of a stir at WP:SPLIT, and I'm realizing, where else can you go and ask the author of an article or a guideline or template or tool and say, "Hey, what did you mean by all that?" and have them actually explain it to you. It can be a bit addicting, actually, and I think I'm starting to get the bug. I can imagine in six months from now, I'm going to have a full-blow case of Wikipeditis, and loving it, too. Thanks again for the friendly welcome!

Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Dimitri Papadimos

Dear Missinedit, Pls find below a "talk" with Help desk...and the answer from Howicus...

...I am very disappointed with the stereotype rejection response I am receiving "not adequately supported by reliable sources" It would be more helpful if you can pinpoint which of the 10 references are not "reliable"...I am trying to create and English version of an article already in an another language already in wikipedia...Yani papadimos (talk) 19:14, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Well, the first three references aren't about Papadimos, but rather about other photographers.

These books number over 30 from notable writers such as Robin Maugham, Lord Kinross (Patrick Balfour), Lawrence, A.W., Philip Sherrard, John Campbell, Laurence Durrell, Kevin Andrews, Francis Noel Baker, Hassan Fathy, James Steel, an MacNiven and various other Greek writers etc. I dont know how much more I must offer to establish his "notability" which I dont think I need to do so for he is already well known...My interest in creating the page in English of a person who is already mentioned in the Greek Wiki is only to enrich the Wikipedia pages and cross ref with notable personalities such as Austen St.Barbe Harrison whose adopted family was that of Dimitri Papadimos from 1930 to the time of his death 1976. If the information is there and there is only the technical presentation is wrong I would appreciate the help for if I knew how to authorize this article I might be seated on the other. Thank you in advance for your interest and helpYani papadimos (talk) 09:45, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Well, I believe the problem is that none of your in-text sources really support the information that given about Dimitri Papadimos. The first 3 sources, athough written by very notable and reputible authors, do not say anything about (quoting from the Dimitri article) "After the war, using Cairo as his base, he traveled in the Mediterranean region and Africa often accompanying British authors, such as Robin Maugham, Peter G.Burton and Lawrence Durrell." If you read those books without knowing anything about Papadimos, you would not know that he traveled often with the authors, but only for the few times mentioned in the books.
The fourth source does not say that (quote article) "Papadimos' favorite themes were people, as Greek poet Constantine Cavafy", but only that he provided a photo for an article about Cavafy. If, in using this source, you were only trying to provide a link to who Cavafy was, you can make an internal link to Cavafy's article on Wikipedia by placing double brackets around his name like this: [[Constantine Cavafy]]
Number five does not show that (quote article) "His photographs illustrated magazines and books of travel literature.", but only that he provided pictures for one book. Six shows that Papadimos displayed his work in Cairo at one point, but does not show that "he presented his work in exhibitions mainly in Cairo". Seven shows that he took some photographs of the land in Greece, but not "extensive photographs of the land". Eight only just mentions Papadimos and says nothing about him "working in the production of numerous motion pictures".
I'll have to finish my response later, sorry. ~ Anastasia (talk) 20:58, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
Dear Missionedit|Anastasia

Thank you for your advise...I am in the process of re-writing the whole article...I will not submit until I receive feed back for you...tksYani papadimos (talk) 12:30, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Here I am again! So, as you can tell from what I wrote above, the problem is not that your sources are not reliable, but that they do not directly support the text. A problem that is connected with the sources is that the current sources do not show that Dimitri was notable enough to have an article on Wikipedia. Your article states (and I have not doubt it is true) that he was an important photographer that had his works in many famous books and magazines (which is notable), but if you looked just at the sources without the article, it would look as if he was insignificant, as there is little mention of him in the sources and very little info about him.
Does all that make sense? I know frustrating that can be. ~ Anastasia (talk) 19:30, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Dear Missionedit|Anastasia I have re-written the article and have tried to follow your advise. There are over 30 books from various notable writers that have him as the "Contributing" Photographer. I have stated the books, writer, publisher year and when available ISBN number. Should I scan the books? Another thing these books go back to the 1950's there are not very many published reviews, there are only mentions in the Writers Wiki page and I have linked the two...Pls keep pointing out weak points...tks Yani papadimos (talk) 19:59, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

You don't need to scan the book sources, and as for weak points, the main one I can see is that there a lot of links to pages outside of Wikipedia (called external links) in the article text. ~ Anastasia (talk) 02:44, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Anastasia, tks...are you talking about the book links (to google?) can you show me one or two and I will follow your instructions...tksYani papadimos (talk) 07:51, 10 July 2013 (UTC) Anastastia, Hello again...I think I have made the changes, internal links and references in the Article "Dimitri Papadimos" with external links only to the Books...I hope this is now enough...tks Yani papadimos (talk) 09:06, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Very good job fixing the links! The pretty much the only thing is that there should only be a link to something or someone the first time they are mentioned. For instance, the first time I mention Robin Maugham, his name is a link, but after that, his name does not need be linked because there is already a link to him on the page. Also, is it possible for you to provide references that support the info given about Dimitri's early life? That would really help. Almost done! :) ~ Anastasia (talk) 19:08, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Anyway tks...if you have any more suggestions I would gladly appreciate your time...tks Yani papadimos (talk) 10:03, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Would you mind if I did a final copyedit (fix grammar, spelling, obvious problems) to the article before you submit it for creation? ~ Anastasia (talk) 17:16, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Anastasia, sorry for the delay...just saw you note...yes pls do...whatever you think necessary...tks Yani papadimos (talk) 17:36, 11 July 2013 (UTC) Anastasia...Hello again!

Your knowledge and comments would be appreciated...tks Yani papadimos (talk) 08:20, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Good point, but the Early life section should not be expanded to much, seeing there are really no sources to support much info. Do you happen to know all about his early life because you are related? If so, there should not be to much family history put in the article, as no one can verify it but Dimitri's relations. ~ Anastasia (talk) 13:19, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
I have finished my very basic copyedit on the article for now. I say that you submit it, to see what the reviewers have to say. A major problem that will probably come up is that you are closely related to Dimitri, and creating articles about relations is very discouraged on Wikipedia, and for a good reason, too. When these articles are made, one or both these problems arise: the article is biased, or it contains a lot of unverifiable information which is known only to the subject's family. You have done a very good job at avoiding the bias problem, but I'm afraid the second one is very prevalent. Well, let's just see how it goes! ~ Anastasia (talk) 14:01, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

My wish was that an important Greek should be part of Wikipedia Encyclopedia...enough though...I would like to personally thank you here in writing as you were one of the few who really help me through your constructive comments and indications...tks again Yani papadimos (talk) 07:29, 13 July 2013 (UTC)

Anastasia, sorry to come back to you...did you say that you saw that I have submitted the article or must I submit it? Is the article submitted? I can seem to find the article on the "submitted" page...thank youYani papadimos (talk) 07:58, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

Juan José Sebreli article

Hi! You have reviewed the article I started and I appreciate that. I have to say that I don't know very much about the citation policy of Wikipedia, but the only thing I can tell you is that all the information that I wrote down on the page is present in the original sources. Therefore, I'd like to ask you where I am failing at.

Thanks! ~ Anastasia (talk) 15:06, 26 July 2013 (UTC)

Something I forgot to teach you

While I was looking at recent changes, I thought of something I forgot to tell you about looking for vandalism. In addition to anything redlinked and a missing edit summary, look for an extreme addition or deletion of text. An extreme deletion of text would probably be anything over 1,000 bytes in the red, but an extreme addition is more like 100,000 in the green, which may indicate a fictionalized biography (believe it or not, some editor kept trying to add a fictionalized biography of a saint to that page over and over). öBrambleberry of RiverClan 17:46, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

You're very welcome! The Wikipedia:Manual of Style a great place to start learning about how to edit Wikipedia. It's kind of a long read, but worth it if you have the time. In the See also section at the bottom of the article there are a lot of other links to great pages to look at. Another thing you might want to check out is Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user, a program where new users can get assigned "mentors" to teach them lessons and help them with any questions they might have. I was adopted by User:Brambleberry of RiverClan and recently graduated. Feel free to take a look at my adoption classroom to see what it's like. Dear Anastacia, your tagging is pretty much welcome, though it serves for nothing once the problem continues there. Believe me darling, it takes a lot less time to fix the thing than to add another Xmas ball to the tree. I wander by Wiki and see things like "Unreferenced - June 2011" or worse "Multiple Issues (2008), Clean up Expert (2009), Content that violates Wikipedia policy will be deleted (2007)" all in one single page. Jump to the side of those who make a difference dear and be bold by fixing the problems yourself instead of telling others to do it... because you can, because you want, because you are Anastacia, the Great ...:) ! Dear Krenakarore, thank for being so polite when addressing this issue! It is so easy to get annoyed with others when they don't do what they should. The reason that I tag pages is because I patrol Special:NewPages. I do try to fix most problems, like sourcing when I can. ~ Anastasia (talk) 19:26, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
The reason you are very special Anastacia, is because you are a human being, not a machine. Let machines do their daily work and make a difference by saving an article or two a day. Leaving a note is important, but your business card is even more. We all patrol pages here one way or another my dear, either referencing or expanding them, once we are all Users, not policemen.
