== Welcome to the 2012 WikiCup ==

Thanks for reviewing the article. I hope that my recent edits and comments have resolved your concerns. [[User:Savidan|Savidan]] 02:54, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
Hello, and welcome to the [[Wikipedia:WikiCup|2012 WikiCup]]! The competition officially begins at the start of 2012 (UTC) after which time you may begin to claim points. Your submission page, where you must note any content for which you wish to claim points, can be found '''[[Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2012/Submissions/Grandiose|here]]''', and formatting instructions can be found in hidden comments on the page. A bot will then update the main table, which can be seen on the WikiCup page. The full rules for what will and will not be awarded points can be found at [[Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring]]. There's also a section on that page listing the changes that have been made to the rules this year, so that experienced participants can get up-to-date in a few seconds. One point of which we must remind everyone; you may ''only'' claim points for content upon which you have done significant work, and which you have nominated, ''in 2012''. For instance, articles written or good article reviews started in 2011 ''are not'' eligible for points.
:Perhaps my recent additions to the article have satisfied your concern. While I am not keen on writing an article based on single mentions of the case in footnotes of student-written law review notes, I am willing to examine any other source that devotes substantial, novel discussion to the case. [[User:Savidan|Savidan]] 00:48, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Grandiose, I hope that my comments on the Falaise Pocket map didn't come across as too harsh. I think that the map is a big improvement on the original and adds value to the articles its used in, and it's limitations are the result of the original map maker. == [[Homicide in English law]] ==

Hi,

After having a quick look at the article I would reconmend that before it becomes GA I would expand on the position of 'Loss of control' prior to the 2009 act especially the matter regarding the position before the sex and age position was established in the case of 'Camplin' (spelling may be wrong of name)of persoanl factors of the defendant to be taken into account when the jury decide about whether he should be succesful to argue this partial defence. I would mention especially the case of i beleive it was called Morgan Smith where he succesfully argued that sexual inadaquecy was enough where the wife states this to the Defendant. This was controlversal at the time and it meant that any factors of the defendant could be taken into account and it was only before Camplin came around that tyhe position of ooss of control (or provocation at the time) was put into a more legally right position.

I would also ensure that the past position prior to the 2009 act wasd in place to give sokme context to the common law position and law based on the Homicide act 1957.

I may do the GA review in the future dependant on time. I hope the above helps.[[User:02blythed|02blythed]] ([[User talk:02blythed|talk]]) 14:02, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

== Request for opinion on images ==

G'day, I have an article currently undergoing GA review ([[13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Handschar (1st Croatian)]]). I am a co-nominator of [[Pavle Đurišić]] for A Class and noticed your comments on the copyright issues with images used in that article, and I wondered if you would mind having a look at three images that are under discussion in the GA review [[Talk:13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Handschar (1st Croatian)/GA1]] on the same basis?
Sure I did, I'll get on it right away. For the future, I recommend notifying nominators on their talk pages after the review is posted. For people like me, with thousands of pages watchlisted, a ping on the article's talk page is not always enough. --[[User:Piotrus|Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus]]&#124;[[User talk:Piotrus|<font style="color:#7CFC00;background:#006400;"> talk to me</font>]] 13:54, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks very much. Regards, [[User:Peacemaker67|Peacemaker67]] ([[User talk:Peacemaker67|talk]]) 14:45, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
: Thanks for doing that, your advice is appreciated. Just a point of clarification. You indicated that you didn't think insignia markings were good enough to justify the fairly high barrier for a FUR. As far as I am aware, this is the only photograph that shows all the insignia that is unique to this pretty obscure division in one photograph (both sleeves and front of uniform). Given the obscurity of the division, the possibility that someone has portrayed the full set of insignia more recently in a free image is decidedly remote. I'm not sure what you mean by illustrating it with other images. Could you explain? [[User:Peacemaker67|Peacemaker67]] ([[User talk:Peacemaker67|talk]]) 02:19, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

I think the answer is in two parts. (1) In the article, create a valid redlink (e.g. "John Smith (academic)"). Don't leave it pointing to the dab page. (2) In the dab page, add <nowiki> [[John Smith (academic)]] (1800–1875), [[History of Brasenose College, Oxford|Principal of Brasenose College, Oxford]] 1850–1875</nowiki>. That way, if someone creates the article at "John Smith (college principal)", they should find the duplicate when they go to add their new article to the dab page and then they can either create a redirect or move the article. Hope this helps. [[User:Bencherlite|Bencherlite]][[User talk:Bencherlite|<i>Talk</i>]] 06:05, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

==Paul Robeson and the Spanish Civil War==
I am editing the Paul Robeson article. Can you suggest a couple of books that describe European societies' view of the struggle. I am specifically concerned with why Robeson felt so strongly about it that he decided to go to Spain. Payne's 1999 book? The splintering of Spain? Thanks in advance. I see you made up an SVG version for [[:File:2010 Riksdag Structure.svg]]. Looking briefly at the source it looks like you did it in Inkscape; if so, that sounds like a real chore. WikiCup 2012 is off to a flying start. At the time of writing, we have 112 contestants; comparable to last year, but slightly fewer than 2010. [[Wikipedia:WikiCup/2012 signups|Signups]] will remain open for another week, after which time they will be closed for this year. Our currrent far-away leader is {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Grapple X}}, due mostly to his work on a slew of good articles about ''[[The X-Files]]''; there remain many such articles waiting to be reviewed at [[WP:GAC|good article candidates]]. Second place is currently held by {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Ruby2010}}, whose points come mostly from good articles about television episodes, although good article reviews, did you knows and an article about a baroness round out the score. In third place is {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Jivesh boodhun}}, who has scored 200 points for his work on a single featured article, as well as points for work on others, mostly in the area of pop music. In all, nine users have 100 or more points. However, at the other end of the scale, there are still dozens of participants who are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly!

== Reginald Heber FAC reply ==
The 64 highest scoring participants will advance to round 2 in a month's time. There, they will be split into eight random groups of eight. The score needed to reach the next round is not at all clear; last year, 8 points guaranteed a place. The year before, 20.

Re my Image review in the [[Reginald Heber]] FAC, where I found that all of the images were free, you wrote:
A few participants and their work warrant a mention for achieving "firsts" in this competition.
:Not quite sure of that, Ruhrfisch. Well, OK, I am, but the documentation on [[:File:Reginald Heber - Project Gutenberg eText 18444.jpg]] may need fixing. I'm not sure but I think the country of origin will be the UK and so the file should be tagged appropriately. No idea of the country of origin of [[:File:GreenlandsIcyMountains.jpg]] either, but possibly either. It's taken from the web, which also doesn't identify it I don't think. <span style="color:#3A3A3A;background-color:#FFFFFF">'''Grandiose''' </span><span style="color:gray;background-color:#FFFFFF">([[User:Grandiose|me]], [[User_talk:Grandiose|talk]], [[Special:Contributions/Grandiose|contribs]]) </span> 22:13, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
*{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|12george1}} was the first to score, with his good article review of ''[[Illinois v. McArthur]]''.
::Just to make it clear that I did my proper due diligence at the time of my review, the Heber portrait (first image) is from an edition of the book that was published in New York (USA) in 1906, while the hymn (second image) is clearly identified as from a book published in Philadelphia in the US in 1899, which makes both PD US, which makes them both free for Wikipedia. I have cleaned up the Heber portrait documentation further. *{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|12george1}} was also the first to score points for an article, thanks to his work on [[Hurricane Debby (1982)]]- now a good article. Tropical storms have featured heavily in the Cup, and good articles currently have a relatively fast turnaround time for reviews.
::PS I do my best with image reviews, but am not an expert. *{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Sp33dyphil}} was the first to score points for a did you know, with [[Russian submarine K-114 Tula|Russian submarine K-114 ''Tula'']]. Military history is another subject which has seen a lot of Cup activity.
*{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Sp33dyphil}} is also the first person to successfully claim bonus points. ''[[Terminator 2: Judgment Day]]'' is now a good article, and was eligible for bonus points because the subject was covered on more than 20 other Wikipedias at the start of the competition. It is fantastic to see bonus points being claimed so early!
*{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Speciate}} was the first to score points for an In the News entry, with ''[[Paedophryne amauensis]]''. The lead image from the article was also used on the main page for a time, and it's certainly eye-catching!
*{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Jivesh boodhun}} was the first to score points for a featured article, and is, at the moment, the only competitor to claim for one. The article, [[Halo (Beyoncé Knowles song)|"Halo" (Beyoncé Knowles song)]], was also worth double points because of its wide coverage. While this is an article that Jivesh and others have worked on for some time, it is undeniable that he has put considerable work into it this year, pushing it over the edge.

==[[Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Map of the Battle of Tinian (2)]]==
We are yet to see any featured lists, featured topics or good topics, but this is unsurprising; firstly, the nomination processes with each of these can take some time, and, secondly, it can take a considerable amount of time to work content to this level. In a similar vein, we have seen only one featured article. The requirement that content must have been worked on this year to be eligible means that we did not expect to see these at the start of the competition. No points have been claimed for featured portals or pictures, but these are not content types which are often claimed; the former has never made a big impact on the WikiCup, while the latter has not done so since 2009's competition.

A quick rules clarification before the regular notices: If you are concerned that another user is claiming points inappropriately, please contact a judge to take a look at the article. Competitors policing one another can create a bad atmosphere, and may lead to inconsistencies and mistakes. Rest assured that we, the judges, ''are'' making an effort to check submissions, but it is possible that we will miss something. On a loosely related note: If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on [[Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews]]. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. The final is upon us! We are down to our final 8. A massive 573 was our lowest qualifying score; this is higher than the 150 points needed last year and the 430 needed in 2010. Even in 2009, when points were acquired for mainspace edit count in addition to audited content, 417 points secured a place. That leaves this year's WikiCup, by one measure at least, our most competitive ever. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Grapple X}} once again finishes the round in first place, leading Pool B. Grapple X writes articles about television, and especially ''The X-Files'' and ''Millenium'', with good articles making up the bulk of the score.
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Miyagawa}} led Pool A this round. Fourth-place finalist last year, Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, and has reached the final primarily off the back of his massive number of did you knows.
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Ruby2010}} was second in Pool B. Ruby2010 writes primarily on television and film, and scores primarily from good articles.
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Casliber}} finished third in Pool B. Casliber is something of a WikiCup veteran, having finished sixth in 2011 and fourth in 2010. Casliber writes on the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. Over half of Casliber's points this round were bonus points from the high-importance articles he has worked on.
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Cwmhiraeth}} came second in Pool A. Also writing on biology, especially marine biology, Cwmhiraeth received 390 points for one featured article ([[Bivalvia]]) and one good article ([[pelican]]), topping up with a large number of did you knows.
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Muboshgu}} was third in Pool A. Muboshgu writes primarily on baseball, and this round saw Muboshgu's first featured article, [[Derek Jeter]], promoted on its fourth attempt at FAC.
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Dana boomer}} was fourth in Pool A. She writes on a variety of topics, including horses, but this round also saw the high-importance [[lettuce]] reach featured article status.
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Sasata}} is another WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist in 2009 and 2010. He writes mostly on mycology.

However, we must also say goodbye to the eight who did not make the final, having fallen at the last hurdle: {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|GreatOrangePumpkin}}, {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Ealdgyth}}, {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Calvin999}}, {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Piotrus}}, {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|Toa Nidhiki05}}, {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|12george1}}, {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|The Bushranger}} and {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant3|1111tomica}}. We hope to see you all next year.

On the subject of next year, a discussion has been opened [[Wikipedia talk:WikiCup/Scoring#Changes for next year?|here]]. Come and have your say about the competition, and how you'd like it to run in the future. This brainstorming will go on for some time before more focused discussions/polls are opened.

I hope the above helps.02blythed (talk) 14:02, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

You added a number of "citation needed" tags on the Thessaloniki article as part of your Good Article review, and I just wanted to let you know that I have taken care of the issues you pointed out. I look forward to addressing any further issues you may have with the article. Regards, --Philly boy92 (talk) 11:34, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Grandiose! I think I resolved your most recent issue/suggestion in the Washington v. Texas GA review. Please feel free to suggest more changes if you feel that's appropriate. Thanks again for taking the time to review the article. All the best, Lord Roem (talk) 05:01, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Protocol of Corfu GA Review

[edit]

Hi, I've gone through the article and addressed the issues you raised. Would you be so kind as to go over it one more time and let me know if there is still anything else that needs to be addressed? Thanks, Athenean (talk) 20:24, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

I've fixed the remaining citation issues, that were addressed in the nomination page. It now seems there isn't something else to do so far.Alexikoua (talk) 20:46, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

DYK nomination of History of Brasenose College, Oxford

[edit]

Hello! Your submission of History of Brasenose College, Oxford at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Prioryman (talk) 00:18, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

Request for opinion on images

[edit]

G'day, I have an article currently undergoing GA review (13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Handschar (1st Croatian)). I am a co-nominator of Pavle Đurišić for A Class and noticed your comments on the copyright issues with images used in that article, and I wondered if you would mind having a look at three images that are under discussion in the GA review Talk:13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Handschar (1st Croatian)/GA1 on the same basis? Thanks very much. Regards, Peacemaker67 (talk) 14:45, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for doing that, your advice is appreciated. Peacemaker67 (talk) 02:19, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

GA review length

[edit]

Hey; in his case it was the latter, as on a skim read they seem okay as GAs. That being said, as I'm reading them over I'm seeing a couple nitpicks that I'll note on the review pages. Nothing major, but they would have been noted had the review not taken five minutes according to the history. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 17:58, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

GAN Backlog drive

[edit]

Hi Grandiose, I'm fully in favour of the guards being checked. Carry on the good work. Pyrotec (talk) 14:15, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

I think it was right first time round. I'm checking some of Wizardman's, but I'm not really interested in sports (and he is) and Hahc21 has had some trouble in the past (he has improved considerably) so I'm treading very carefully. Pyrotec (talk) 14:51, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Disambigs

[edit]

I think the answer is in two parts. (1) In the article, create a valid redlink (e.g. "John Smith (academic)"). Don't leave it pointing to the dab page. (2) In the dab page, add [[John Smith (academic)]] (1800–1875), [[History of Brasenose College, Oxford|Principal of Brasenose College, Oxford]] 1850–1875. That way, if someone creates the article at "John Smith (college principal)", they should find the duplicate when they go to add their new article to the dab page and then they can either create a redirect or move the article. Hope this helps. BencherliteTalk 06:05, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Yours FACs

[edit]

Have any of them not gone through A-class, PR or GAN yet? Taking them through what they haven't done yet would probably be the route I would go, if you're up for it, and please let me know if you choose GAN (I'll see anything at PR, A-class or FAC). - Dank (push to talk) 19:25, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Help needed with country InfoBox

[edit]

Assistance is needed at Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution_noticeboard#Bulgaria_discussion to help decide which dates should be included in the InfoBox of Bulgaria. It is a complex situation, because there were political entities from 700-1300, then a gap of several hundred years without any entity, then 1878 saw a new state. Any input is appreciated. Please comment there, not here, to keep things co-located. [Note: You were randomly selected from WP:FRS list. ] --Noleander (talk) 17:36, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

OK, please spell out in great detail what needs to be done for these four images:

I understood the bit about adding categories to the Balliol image, but apart from that I'm not convinced that I actually understand what I need to do to satisfy your objection beyond slapping a couple of extra tags on the images... Thanks, BencherliteTalk 06:48, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply; I've added some information at the FAC page and at File:Max Muller.jpg which I hope overcomes your points. Let me know if it doesn't. Yours, BencherliteTalk 12:42, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Renaming sections

[edit]

Hello Grandiose, I noticed that you had made some changes to the page that outlines Wikipedia's username policy. When you rename sections, please check the "what links here" page to update the pages that link to the section. Alternatively, you may use {{Anchor}} to create an anchor with the old name, so that links that use the old name will continue to work. Happy editing! —Joshua Issac (talk) 11:38, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Sellers at FAC

[edit]

Many thanks for your comments at FAC on the Peter Sellers images. A new image has now replaced the Girl in My Soup image and we now have two images with signatures. There is a concern that UK signatures hold copyright. is this something we should be concerned about, or is this a limited issue? Many thanks - SchroCat (^@) 17:41, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

Gentle reminder

[edit]

Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Boden Professor of Sanskrit election, 1860/archive1 - do the images still cause you concern? If so, do let me know; if not, would you mind saying as much at the FAC? Thanks in advance (either way!) BencherliteTalk 20:43, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

Reginald Heber FAC reply

[edit]

Re my Image review in the Reginald Heber FAC, where I found that all of the images were free, you wrote:

Not quite sure of that, Ruhrfisch. Well, OK, I am, but the documentation on File:Reginald Heber - Project Gutenberg eText 18444.jpg may need fixing. I'm not sure but I think the country of origin will be the UK and so the file should be tagged appropriately. No idea of the country of origin of File:GreenlandsIcyMountains.jpg either, but possibly either. It's taken from the web, which also doesn't identify it I don't think. Grandiose (me, talk, contribs) 22:13, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Just to make it clear that I did my proper due diligence at the time of my review, the Heber portrait (first image) is from an edition of the book that was published in New York (USA) in 1906, while the hymn (second image) is clearly identified as from a book published in Philadelphia in the US in 1899, which makes both PD US, which makes them both free for Wikipedia. I have cleaned up the Heber portrait documentation further. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:09, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
PS I do my best with image reviews, but am not an expert. I believe that I am correct here, but if I have erred, please let me know and help me fix the error - thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:20, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 August newsletter

[edit]

The final is upon us! We are down to our final 8. A massive 573 was our lowest qualifying score; this is higher than the 150 points needed last year and the 430 needed in 2010. Even in 2009, when points were acquired for mainspace edit count in addition to audited content, 417 points secured a place. That leaves this year's WikiCup, by one measure at least, our most competitive ever. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) once again finishes the round in first place, leading Pool B. Grapple X writes articles about television, and especially The X-Files and Millenium, with good articles making up the bulk of the score.
  2. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) led Pool A this round. Fourth-place finalist last year, Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, and has reached the final primarily off the back of his massive number of did you knows.
  3. Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions) was second in Pool B. Ruby2010 writes primarily on television and film, and scores primarily from good articles.
  4. Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished third in Pool B. Casliber is something of a WikiCup veteran, having finished sixth in 2011 and fourth in 2010. Casliber writes on the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. Over half of Casliber's points this round were bonus points from the high-importance articles he has worked on.
  5. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second in Pool A. Also writing on biology, especially marine biology, Cwmhiraeth received 390 points for one featured article (Bivalvia) and one good article (pelican), topping up with a large number of did you knows.
  6. New York City Muboshgu (submissions) was third in Pool A. Muboshgu writes primarily on baseball, and this round saw Muboshgu's first featured article, Derek Jeter, promoted on its fourth attempt at FAC.
  7. Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions) was fourth in Pool A. She writes on a variety of topics, including horses, but this round also saw the high-importance lettuce reach featured article status.
  8. Canada Sasata (submissions) is another WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist in 2009 and 2010. He writes mostly on mycology.

However, we must also say goodbye to the eight who did not make the final, having fallen at the last hurdle: Russia GreatOrangePumpkin (submissions), England Ealdgyth (submissions), England Calvin999 (submissions), Poland Piotrus (submissions), North Carolina Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), Cherokee Nation The Bushranger (submissions) and North Macedonia 1111tomica (submissions). We hope to see you all next year.

On the subject of next year, a discussion has been opened here. Come and have your say about the competition, and how you'd like it to run in the future. This brainstorming will go on for some time before more focused discussions/polls are opened. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
