== User script to detect unreliable sources ==

{{Main|User:Headbomb/unreliable}}
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to [[WP:URS|unreliable sources]] and [[predatory journal]]s. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the [[Wikipedia:User scripts/Most imported scripts|39th most imported script on Wikipedia]]. The idea is that it takes something like
*John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14. (<code><nowiki>John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.</nowiki></code>)
and turns it into something like
* John Smith "{{highlight|[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]|pink}}" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{tl|cite web}}, {{tl|cite journal}} and {{tl|doi}}.

The script is mostly based on [[WP:RSPSOURCES]], [[WP:NPPSG]] and [[WP:CITEWATCH]] and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is '''not a script to be mindlessly used''', and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at [[User:Headbomb/unreliable]]. Questions, comments and requests can be made at [[User talk:Headbomb/unreliable]].

Should WikiProject Public Art be converted into a task force of [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Visual arts|WikiProject Visual arts]]?

There [[Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Public_Art/Archive_3#Task_force?|does not seem]] to be much interest in keeping [[Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Public_Art/Archive_3#Status|as a standalone WikiProject]]. --[[User:Another Believer|<span style="color:navy">Another Believer</span>]] ([[User talk:Another Believer|<span style="color:#C60">Talk</span>]]) 14:13, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
* I'd say yes, it seems there aren't active members anymore. [[User:P1221|P1221]] ([[User talk:P1221|talk]]) 07:30, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
* Yes! It's not active enough to be a standalone WP and could benefit from instead being a task force of a larger WP. — [[User:Golden|<span style="color:#0F52BA;">Golden</span>]] <sup>[[User talk:Golden|<span style="font-size:82%"><span>''call me maybe?''</span></span>]]</sup> 17:38, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
*It was always kept going by a couple of people. If they've left I don't see the point in calling it a "task force". Might as well mark it as inactive & refer people to the main VA project. I was never all that happy with the distinction anyway. Almost all the art we cover is "public" in most senses. [[User:Johnbod|Johnbod]] ([[User talk:Johnbod|talk]]) 23:18, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
* I assume the practical advantage of this is that it would reduce the number of talk page banners; currently the talk page for an article on a public sculpture is going to have {{tl|WikiProject Public Art}}, {{tl|WikiProject Sculpture}} and {{tl|WikiProject Visual arts}} (and no doubt some have missed one or more, so a merger would help there). I would welcome a reduction in the number of these. The only thing is that this WikiProject has task forces of its own; most are moribund but I still use [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Public Art/London]] ([[WP:PALon]]) quite heavily, particularly the [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Public Art/London/Wikidata|Wikidata lists]] there. So if this project were made a task force of [[WP:WPVA]] the talk page banner for articles in that task force would read "{{xt|'''[[Wikipedia:WikiProject Visual arts|WikiProject Visual arts]]''' / '''[[Wikipedia:WikiProject Public Art|Public Art]]''' / '''[[Wikipedia:WikiProject Public Art/London|London]]'''}}". {{small|(The switch there from sentence-case "Visual arts" to title-case "Public Art" is unfortunate.)}} I don't know whether three levels of project instead of two would cause problems. (Extra-long page names for sub-pages of WP:PALon? What do you call a task force of a task force?) It might be more straightforward to make [[WP:SCULPT]] a task force of [[WP:WPVA]] instead – again, the only practical difference I know of would be one less talk page banner. [[User:Ham II|Ham II]] ([[User talk:Ham II|talk]]) 07:38, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
:: {{Ping|Ham II}} I see how this complicates things for PALon. Though, PALon ''could'' become a task force of WikiProject London, if that's easier ([[Wikipedia:WikiProject London/Public art]]). Just a thought. ---[[User:Another Believer|<span style="color:navy">Another Believer</span>]] <sub>([[User talk:Another Believer|<span style="color:#C60">Talk</span>]])</sub> 14:17, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
::: {{re|Another Believer}} Good point, and one I hadn't thought of. Possibly some PALon articles haven't been tagged with {{tl|WikiProject London}}, so a merger might help there, too. And I see that {{tl|WikiProject New York City}} [[Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_New_York_City/Archive_5#Subproject_flagging|has long had a parameter]] for [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Public Art/NYC]] (which was apparently never linked to from the home page or the task forces page of [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Public Art]]!!). [[User:Ham II|Ham II]] ([[User talk:Ham II|talk]]) 06:49, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
::The problem with all these zombie projects is that people see the banner, & may ask a question etc on Project talk, where nothing is likely to happen. The Sculpture one is marked "semi-active" - a considerable overstatement imo. [[User:Johnbod|Johnbod]] ([[User talk:Johnbod|talk]]) 20:40, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
::: Not opposed to having a similar merge discussion for WikiProject Sculpture, but perhaps one thing at a time. ---[[User:Another Believer|<span style="color:navy">Another Believer</span>]] <sub>([[User talk:Another Believer|<span style="color:#C60">Talk</span>]])</sub> 21:33, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Naming conventions for public statues

Article titles

There is a discussion about titles for articles on statues etc at Wikipedia talk:Article titles which may be of interest. PamD 07:08, 22 October 2018 (UTC)

  • Please? We really need editors editing public art to be in the conversation. —SmokeyJoe (talk) 21:31, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
    • This one's tough. I'm waiting to see where we land, because many articles are likely going to need to be moved. I'm guilty of using several conventions because there was so much inconsistency, as well as differences based on region. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:53, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
      • I know. I pushed myself to say something. I think the conversation is important because new sculpture and other public art articles are coming, and they may be titled haphazardly. A statement addressing the issues would be very useful. One question I have, does the art literature name these things differently to the public media? —SmokeyJoe (talk) 22:17, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Public art in Boston

Hello, fellow public art lovers. Ahead of the upcoming WikiConference North America, which will be held in Boston in November, I'm creating a project page listing public artworks in the city at Wikipedia:WikiProject Sculpture/Boston.

Surprisingly, there were only 6 Wikipedia articles about public art in Boston, before this month. So far I've created Boston Massacre Monument, Equestrian statue of Joseph Hooker, Statue of Charles Sumner (Boston), Statue of Charles Sumner (Cambridge, Massachusetts), and Statue of Wendell Phillips, as well as List of public art in Boston and Template:Public art in Boston. I'll be continuing work on Boston's public art in the next couple months and invite any project members to help out! Could be a fun little collaboration. :)

Thanks, and happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:52, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

Task force?

Should WikiProject Public Art be converted into a task force of WikiProject Visual arts?

I think this project saw it's heyday when we started it initially, years and years ago. At this point I'd just merge it into WP Visual art. Missvain (talk) 16:10, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping, I hope that status update was not taken too hard - I just happened to notice there was not that much activity in these parts. To be honest I think task forces are often better for these sorts of clearly defined areas. That’s because there’s more editors that can become involved and because the time spent maintaining a task force vs project is much less. Au revoir! The State of Minnesota owns the copyright as well as the sculptures of the memorials on the Minnesota State Capitol Mall lawn. While they are understandably not willing to release the copyright of the sculptures there is interest in providing high-resolution photos of the monuments to Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons on the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 Generic license for Wikipedia and the public to use. I have been looking around to see what forms or protocol needs to be completed for this to happen but I have not been successful. Do you know of how to go about this? or what forms are needed? The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Got a lot of attention after it's bombing. Not often a public work gets 1.6 million hits on Wikipedia. the article needs work and it's quite messy. Harizotoh9 (talk) 04:16, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

Should WikiProject Public Art be converted into a task force of WikiProject Visual arts?

There does not seem to be much interest in keeping as a standalone WikiProject. --Another Believer (Talk) 14:13, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

  • I'd say yes, it seems there aren't active members anymore. P1221 (talk) 07:30, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
  • Yes! It's not active enough to be a standalone WP and could benefit from instead being a task force of a larger WP. — Golden call me maybe? 17:38, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
  • It was always kept going by a couple of people. If they've left I don't see the point in calling it a "task force". Might as well mark it as inactive & refer people to the main VA project. I was never all that happy with the distinction anyway. Almost all the art we cover is "public" in most senses. Johnbod (talk) 23:18, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
  • I assume the practical advantage of this is that it would reduce the number of talk page banners; currently the talk page for an article on a public sculpture is going to have {{WikiProject Public Art}}, {{WikiProject Sculpture}} and {{WikiProject Visual arts}} (and no doubt some have missed one or more, so a merger would help there). I would welcome a reduction in the number of these. The only thing is that this WikiProject has task forces of its own; most are moribund but I still use Wikipedia:WikiProject Public Art/London (WP:PALon) quite heavily, particularly the Wikidata lists there. So if this project were made a task force of WP:WPVA the talk page banner for articles in that task force would read "WikiProject Visual arts / Public Art / London". (The switch there from sentence-case "Visual arts" to title-case "Public Art" is unfortunate.) I don't know whether three levels of project instead of two would cause problems. (Extra-long page names for sub-pages of WP:PALon? What do you call a task force of a task force?) It might be more straightforward to make WP:SCULPT a task force of WP:WPVA instead – again, the only practical difference I know of would be one less talk page banner. @Ham II: I see how this complicates things for PALon. Though, PALon could become a task force of WikiProject London, if that's easier (Wikipedia:WikiProject London/Public art). Just a thought. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:17, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
@Another Believer: Good point, and one I hadn't thought of. Possibly some PALon articles haven't been tagged with {{WikiProject London}}, so a merger might help there, too. And I see that {{WikiProject New York City}} has long had a parameter for Wikipedia:WikiProject Public Art/NYC (which was apparently never linked to from the home page or the task forces page of Wikipedia:WikiProject Public Art!!). Ham II (talk) 06:49, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
The problem with all these zombie projects is that people see the banner, & may ask a question etc on Project talk, where nothing is likely to happen. The Sculpture one is marked "semi-active" - a considerable overstatement imo. Johnbod (talk) 20:40, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
Not opposed to having a similar merge discussion for WikiProject Sculpture, but perhaps one thing at a time. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:33, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

Update: FYI, I've asked for assistance converting this WikiProject into a task force over at the admin noticeboard. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 13:59, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
