== The spoken aloud gate symbols and wormhole physics == |
|||
During season 7 we find out that the gate symbols can be spoken aloud. They never seem to go into detail at to what symbol is for what syllable. Is there a resource somewhere where someone has taken the time to find out the syllable goes with each gate symbol? |
|||
I don't have the time myself to do it but know there are at least two episodes where gate symbols are shown and they are spoken aloud at the same time. |
|||
I have already added the two I know from memory (and from being shown exclusively by O'Neill) into the table under wormhole physics. |
|||
Speaking of wormhole physics, during "38 minutes" on SGA, they state the a stargate only sends through whole items. (IE, the whole puddlejumper) yet in "the torment on tantalus" Ernest Littleford has a air pipe attached to him when he enters the gate and therefore shouldn't have made it as the gate shuts down with the air pipe being severed. |

:Actually in "38 Minutes" they do predict that when the gate shuts down their ship will cut in half. This is consistent with various SG-1 scenes where the gate shuts down while something has not completely passed through. Ships such as the Ancient puddle jumper and the Wraith dart are designed to fit through Stargates, and have built-in DHDs |

:Yes, that was in Into the Fire. I don't think it was specified whether or not it had its own DHD, but it was apparently abandoned due to being too difficult to fly. --Tango (talk) 03:19, 17 November 2009 (UTC) |

The Gate only sends whole things through when it's ON. In the torment on tantalus the gate ran out of power before the pipe cam through. In 38 minutes, had not SGA pushed the puddle jumper through, the gate would shut down automatically, slicing the jumper in half.68.50.57.15 (talk) 03:35, 24 December 2009 (UTC) |

The Destiny-Style stargates dont use point of origins. The Glyphs of the milkyway and pegasus-design represent star constellations, while the Destiny-Style-gates use some sort of codes. The MW and PG-gates use 7-8 Symbol adresses: 6 points in space (+ 1 Distance-Calculation) + 1 point of origin, while the destiny-gate use 9 Symbol adresses: 8 symbols determine the destination, while the 9th is some sort of distancecalculation. This is mentioned in Stargate universe, when they found an 8 Symbol adress for Earth within the ships database with no ninth symbol given. Col. Young tells them to dial it, even if it takes 36 tries, but Dr. Rush intervents, because it would use too much power. |
|||
Note |
|||
When the icarus-base-gate dials destiny they first used the Orion glyph as ninth symbol, since it is the bases point of origin, but this fails. Later they tried it again, this time with Earths point of origin. This time it works. This means, that this 9 Symbol-Combination is not the same as an 9 Symbol Adress, its more like an unique kind of code, since the last symbol is not a point of origin, as it does not depend on location, neither a distancecalculation as it does not change when destiny moves. |

::The Destiny-Style stargates USE point of origins, and stargates use 7(8) symbol adresses too (to get from Destiny to planet and back), Destiny don't have power to dial 9 symbol address. 9 symbol addresses are used for moving objects like ships, if location is changing. Earth have 9 symbol address bacause of planetary drift (possibly Ancients couldn't calculate planetary and galatical drift for so long distances). Destiny should be able to use 8 symbol address to dial Earth, but address is unknown or Dastiny's computer can't calculate it. :: No, the sequence does matter according to the explanation in the movie - and I don't remember anything that said otherwise in the series. Each pair of symbols defines a line running between the identified constellations. So if your address is abcdefg, you have lines ab, cd, and ef, and the intersection point is the destination. But lines ac, bf, and de would be a different set of lines, hence a different destination - if any; those lines would probably not intersect. It makes no sense either way (you only need two intersecting lines to determine a point in space, and constellations do not have a single defined location in 3d space anyway) but that's what they said. :<math>37*36*35*34*33*32=1673844480</math> is the correct answer since Stargate addresses are permutations without repetition, not combinations. Excluding the origin, you only have 37 symbols to pick from. You can and must use 6 symbols at one time(disregarding the 7th, 8th, and 9th chevrons). You can't use the same one more than once. And the order matters. --The godfaza 12:36, 6 March 2010 (UTC) <small><span class="autosigned">—Preceding unsigned comment added by The godfaza (talk • contribs) </span></small><!-- Template:Unsigned --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot--> |

In my opinion the order matters, but not as you think. Consider six points in a three-dimensional space. There is only one set of three lines linking two points each that can intersect in a single point or approximately doing so. This means that every planet must have its unique combination of 6 symbols, but to succesfully dial you must also input the right permutation so the system can locate it. I've rolled back the unreferenced, unexplained changes to the Atlantis constellations section, made by an editor who, it appears, created an account to do that and only that. I think this is article is far too detailed. I think that as Wikipedia articles are supposed to summarise key concepts, there is no need for the instructions on how to dial the device, no need for the extensive translations of in-universe hieroglyphs, and no need for the constellation charts. In the 4th paragraph of the Address section of this article (starts with "Eight-symbol addresses"), there is a Citation Needed notation connected with the comment that the additional symbol acts like type of area code. This is based on a comment made by Samantha Carter after the Stargate opens and tracks outside the known network of Stargates. She says "The extra chevron must add a new distance calculation to the existing points, kind of like dialing a different area code" |

Dialing
[edit]Actually, the intergalactic bridge creates an inconsistency into the mechanics of address-dialing.
A gate's address depends on it's location, and when it's moved, it's address changes as well. That means that gates outside the galaxy can not have an address and can not be dialed to. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.199.121.135 (talk) 07:26, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

Discussing a 'Citation Needed' notation in the Address section
[edit]In the 4th paragraph of the Address section of this article (starts with "Eight-symbol addresses"), there is a Citation Needed notation connected with the comment that the additional symbol acts like type of area code. This is based on a comment made by Samantha Carter after the Stargate opens and tracks outside the known network of Stargates.
