On October 24, 2018, an American live-action film adaptation of the popular manga, My Hero Academia was in development, with Legendary Entertainment, and Shueisha (who published the manga) set to produce and develop the potential film, while Toho would distribute the film in Japan.[1] On August 13, 2021, when it was revealed that Japanese filmmaker Shinsuke Sato was attached to direct the film, marking his English-language debut.[2] On December 12, 2022, it was announced that the film would be released on Netflix and that Joby Harold would write the screenplay.[3]

On December 11, 2023, Harold revealed that he and Sato are actively working on the film.[4]
