This field is being discussed at [[Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Infoboxes#For sportspeople]]. -- [[User:Beland|Beland]] ([[User talk:Beland|talk]]) 03:31, 3 September 2024 (UTC) |

:I vote we just eliminate the field from the basketball biography infobox. It’s not used in cases where the birth country is the same anyway. The hullabaloo about it is just another case of overreach from those who desire “one size fits all” across WP subjects and is not worth the hassle. :I've seen the |alt parameter used in several articles including [[Paige Bueckers]]. Should this be added to the template's documentation? Does it work? [[User:Therapyisgood|Therapyisgood]] ([[User talk:Therapyisgood|talk]]) 21:48, 5 July 2022 (UTC) |

::On the one hand, people trivially add "French" to [[Joel Embiid]], though his notability is not associated with being Franch. On the other, [[Dominique Wilkins]] was born in France (U.S. military parents), but is American, which would be lost without some field, even if not labelled "Nationality". —[[User:Bagumba|Bagumba]] ([[User talk:Bagumba|talk]]) 05:14, 4 September 2024 (UTC) |
|||
::This has been resolved (added to the template), thank you. [[User:Therapyisgood|Therapyisgood]] ([[User talk:Therapyisgood|talk]]) 02:18, 17 August 2022 (UTC) |

:::So? This can all be discussed in the lede/prose of the article. If there is to be controversy about something as straightforward as national team participation then it is more trouble than it is worth [[User:Rikster2|Rikster2]] ([[User talk:Rikster2|talk]]) 15:38, 4 September 2024 (UTC) |

::::Ideally, the lead captures most of the lead. But yeah, drive-by editors mess with infobox fields more than they do prose. So, that's the bright side if it goes. —[[User:Bagumba|Bagumba]] ([[User talk:Bagumba|talk]]) 17:33, 4 September 2024 (UTC) |

== Pull BBR WNBA links from Wikidata == |

This infobox should pull the Basketball Reference links for WNBA players from Wikidata like it does for NBA players. There are still a lot of WNBA players with these links missing. Pulling from Wikidata would be a lot faster than adding them manually. [[User:WikiOriginal-9|<span style="color: blue">'''''~WikiOriginal-9~'''''</span>]] ([[User talk:WikiOriginal-9|<span style="color: blue">'''talk'''</span>]]) 02:00, 17 October 2024 (UTC) |

Would there be any objection if I added any of the following text (taken from {{Tl|Infobox person/doc}}) below the existing one line already in the Usage section? |
|||
:Done. Seems uncontroversial as it's already done for NBA. —[[User:Bagumba|Bagumba]] ([[User talk:Bagumba|talk]]) 04:11, 17 October 2024 (UTC) |

* Use the name of the birthplace at the time of birth, e.g.: {{pval|Saigon}} (prior to 1976) or {{pval|Ho Chi Minh City}} (post-1976). |
|||
* [[Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Icons#Do not use flags to indicate locations of birth, residence, or death|Do not use a flag template]], coat of arms, or other icon. |
|||
* [[Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Infoboxes#Purpose|Omit unnecessary or redundant details]]. For example, it is not necessary to state: {{!xt|{{pval|New York City, [[New York (state)|New York]], United States}}}} when {{xt|{{pval|New York City, U.S.}}}} conveys essentially the same information more concisely. |
|||
* Countries should [[Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking#What generally should not be linked|generally not be linked]]. |
|||
* For subsequent places (of death, etc.) it is not necessary to repeat jurisdictional details or links for the same place name. |

:Seems too prescriptive to add en masse. They should only be added on an as-needed basis. For my own curiosity, is there a previous discussion that establishes consensus for those items that are not linked to a guideline? —[[User:Bagumba|Bagumba]] ([[User talk:Bagumba|talk]]) 17:23, 15 March 2023 (UTC) |

:::I have reverted your change, because this does not look like consensus of any sort. Sports infoboxes and tables usually list "City, State/Province" for teams or BLPs related to Canada and the United States. – [[User talk:Sbaio|sbaio]] 16:20, 19 March 2023 (UTC) |
|||
::::'''Oppose bullet 3'''. This infobox uses City, State/Province consistently which mirrors pretty much any roster list or sport bio you see in North America. The rest are fine. [[User:Rikster2|Rikster2]] ([[User talk:Rikster2|talk]]) 16:35, 19 March 2023 (UTC) |

{{re|Frietjes}} I see that you implemented [[Module:Sports career]] to handle a person's team history. It seems that the display has different alignments: left aligned for [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Barnes desktop] and center for [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Barnes mobile]. Can that be made left aligned for both? —[[User:Bagumba|Bagumba]] ([[User talk:Bagumba|talk]]) 06:46, 25 October 2024 (UTC) |

Template should include all parameters. You shouldn't need to add undocumented parameters and the Name of the player should be included within the borders like [[Template:Infobox NFL biography]] uses. [[User:Batgirl-Awsomeness|Batgirl-Awsomeness]] ([[User talk:Batgirl-Awsomeness|talk]]) 22:07, 28 March 2023 (UTC) |

:Can you please be more specific about the changes you recommend? Also, when I compare [[LeBron James]] and [[Patrick Mahomes]] both have the player name “outside” the border. [[User:Rikster2|Rikster2]] ([[User talk:Rikster2|talk]]) 23:33, 28 March 2023 (UTC) |
|||
:Oh, I didn't realize that, sorry. Specifically when you add the infobox basketball biography, a good amount of parameters are not automatically generated. You have to add them as undocumented parameters. According to the template page it should have the following categories: |

Is there a really a difference between being inducted into the Hall of Fame as a player or coach? :I guess it's more for a person who had multiple roles to distinguish how they made the HOF e.g. [[Phil Jackson]] was inducted as a coach, not a player. I'd be okay to remove the distinction, and leave the details for the body. Considering the ibx was never extended to have [[Jerry West]] show his individual contributor induction or Olympic team induction, it's anyways incomplete. And the current design with [[Lenny Wilkens]] is a waste of space to repeat the same URL link. I don't think any other sports ibx makes the distinction either. —[[User:Bagumba|Bagumba]] ([[User talk:Bagumba|talk]]) 05:32, 14 November 2024 (UTC) |

In two places the template uses <nowiki>[[Undrafted sportsperson|Undrafted]]</nowiki>, creating a line such as "[[NBA draft]] [[2006 NBA draft]] / [[Undrafted sportsperson|Undrafted]]", which would be more stylistically correct as "[[NBA draft]] [[2006 NBA draft]] / [[Undrafted sportsperson|undrafted]]" without the capitalization. |

:::If the labels don't need to be listed, then we should just be using {{para|HOF}} and remove {{para|HOF_player}} and {{para|HOF_coach}}. ~ [[User:Dissident93|<b style="color: #660000;">''Dissident93''</b>]] <sup>([[User talk:Dissident93|<b style="color: #D18719;">''talk''</b>]])</sup> 14:27, 14 November 2024 (UTC) |

::::Actually, there are differences between the two which can be seen with Bill Sharman's [https://www.hoophall.com/hall-of-famers/bill-sharman playing] and [https://www.hoophall.com/hall-of-famers/bill-sharman1 coaching] links. So while the two templates ''do'' serve a purpose, I still think we should either just use a single HOF parameter or merge {{para|HOF_player}} to {{para|HOF}} and keep {{para|HOF_coach}} in the cases that warrant it like Bill Sharman. ~ [[User:Dissident93|<b style="color: #660000;">''Dissident93''</b>]] ([[User talk:Dissident93|<b style="color: #D18719;">''talk''</b>]]) 21:08, 18 November 2024 (UTC) |

Nationality
[edit]This field is being discussed at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Infoboxes#For sportspeople. -- Beland (talk) 03:31, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- I vote we just eliminate the field from the basketball biography infobox. It’s not used in cases where the birth country is the same anyway. The hullabaloo about it is just another case of overreach from those who desire “one size fits all” across WP subjects and is not worth the hassle. Rikster2 (talk) 14:12, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- On the one hand, people trivially add "French" to Joel Embiid, though his notability is not associated with being Franch. On the other, Dominique Wilkins was born in France (U.S. military parents), but is American, which would be lost without some field, even if not labelled "Nationality". —Bagumba (talk) 05:14, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- So? This can all be discussed in the lede/prose of the article. If there is to be controversy about something as straightforward as national team participation then it is more trouble than it is worth Rikster2 (talk) 15:38, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- Ideally, the lead captures most of the lead. But yeah, drive-by editors mess with infobox fields more than they do prose. So, that's the bright side if it goes. —Bagumba (talk) 17:33, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

Pull BBR WNBA links from Wikidata
[edit]This infobox should pull the Basketball Reference links for WNBA players from Wikidata like it does for NBA players. There are still a lot of WNBA players with these links missing. Pulling from Wikidata would be a lot faster than adding them manually. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 02:00, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
- Done. Seems uncontroversial as it's already done for NBA. —Bagumba (talk) 04:11, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
Alignment display of career history
[edit]@Frietjes: I see that you implemented Module:Sports career to handle a person's team history. It seems that the display has different alignments: left aligned for desktop and center for mobile. Can that be made left aligned for both? —Bagumba (talk) 06:46, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- Bagumba, yes, I have added explicit left alignment. Frietjes (talk) 14:33, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks Frietjes. —Bagumba (talk) 15:18, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
HOF player and coach links
[edit]Is there a really a difference between being inducted into the Hall of Fame as a player or coach? If not, then the labels have no reason to exist at all. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 21:58, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- I guess it's more for a person who had multiple roles to distinguish how they made the HOF e.g. Phil Jackson was inducted as a coach, not a player. I'd be okay to remove the distinction, and leave the details for the body. Considering the ibx was never extended to have Jerry West show his individual contributor induction or Olympic team induction, it's anyways incomplete. And the current design with Lenny Wilkens is a waste of space to repeat the same URL link. I don't think any other sports ibx makes the distinction either. —Bagumba (talk) 05:32, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- Also for Wilkins, why have "Inducted in 2006" for college HOF, but not for basketball HOF. Suggest tightening and remove for consistency. —Bagumba (talk) 05:34, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- If the labels don't need to be listed, then we should just be using
|HOF=
and remove|HOF_player=
and|HOF_coach=
. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 14:27, 14 November 2024 (UTC)- Actually, there are differences between the two which can be seen with Bill Sharman's playing and coaching links. So while the two templates do serve a purpose, I still think we should either just use a single HOF parameter or merge
|HOF_player=
to|HOF=
and keep|HOF_coach=
in the cases that warrant it like Bill Sharman. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 21:08, 18 November 2024 (UTC)- I can add in some logic where if the two parameter values are the same it only outputs one line, if that would make everyone happier. Primefac (talk) 21:25, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
- Isn't that how the current formatting is handled? The issue remains with Bill Sharman as both values (bill-sharman and bill-sharman1) link to valid, but different pages. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 21:29, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
