Following the release of the film Black Panther (2018), its star Chadwick Boseman was in negotiations to return as his character T'Challa / Black Panther in two planned sequels for a reported pay of $10 million and $20 million, respectively.[1] Boseman died in August 2020, and the first sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), instead focused on his co-star Letitia Wright as T'Challa's sister Shuri, who becomes the new Black Panther. By November 2022, the films' director and co-writer Ryan Coogler had discussed a potential third Black Panther film with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.[2] The subtitle "Wakanda Forever" was originally intended to be used for the third film before it was used for the second film.[3] In January 2023, Wright said a third film was being considered but the cast and Coogler needed "a little bit of a break... to regroup" before starting work on it.[4] In November 2024, Denzel Washington revealed that Coogler was writing a role for him in the third film.[5] The next month, Nate Moore—an executive producer on Black Panther and producer of Wakanda Forever—announced plans to exit his role at Marvel Studios in March 2025 to pursue producing outside the studio, though he would return to produce Black Panther 3 along with Marvel Studios.[6]
