Calvin Hungarian Presbyterian Church is a Presbyterian Church in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is named after John Calvin, an influential French theologian and pastor during the Protestant Reformation.

History

On April 22, 1963, the Calvin Hungarian Presbyterian Church, 414 Laurier Avenue West, was formally dedicated as a chapel and congregational centre. The congregation of 62 under Rev; K. D. Toth consisted largely of "Freedom Fighters" of the ill-fated 1954 Hungarian revolution. [1]

Rev. John A. Johnston, the Moderator, conducted the dedication service, under auspice of Ottawa Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church. J. W. Pickersgill, then minister of citizenship and immigration helped to expedite the flow of Hungarian refugee to Canada in 1956, was present at the dedication. Rev. H. D. Stewart, of Knox Presbyterian Church, recalled how he had met the Hungarian refugee at Uplands. In Hungary they had everything but freedom, but when they came to Canada freedom was their sole asset. [2] Very Rev. Aladar Ecsedy, dean emeritus of the Presbytery of Budapest, preached in Hungarian referring to the prophet Ezekiah and his love of the temple as exemplified his writings. "Let this church - be also such a place for you. - Love it. Talk about it Joyfully and writ about it gladly." Rev. T. Montgomery and Rev. O. H. Spark, of Ottawa Presbytry, and Rev. Dr. M. Fehrer and Rev. T. Petroczy also took part in the dedication service. [3]

The congregation moved to 384 Frank St, Ottawa ON K2P 0Y1.

Mission

Calvin Hungarian Church is a memorial of how God had helped the parishioners through grievous troubles, in helping them today and would continue to bless them as they continue to put their trust in Him.
