    Welcome to the education noticeboard
Purpose of this page Using this page

This page is for discussion related to student assignments and the Wikipedia Education Program. Please feel free to post, whether you're from a class, a potential class, or if you're a Wikipedia editor.

Topics for this board might include:

Of course, we should remain civil towards all participants and assume good faith.

There are other pages more appropriate for dealing with certain specific issues:

    • "Start a new discussion thread". Use an informative title: ==Informative title==. If a thread is related to an ongoing discussion, consider placing it under a level-3 heading within that existing discussion.
    • You should generally notify any user who is the subject of a discussion. You may use {{ping}} to do so, or simply link their username when you post your comment.
It is not required to contact students when their edits are only being discussed in the context of a class-wide problem.
    • If no comments have been made within 30 days, your post and any responses will be automatically archived.
    • Please sign all contributions, using four tilde characters "~~~~".
    • If discussion is already ongoing elsewhere or if there is a more natural location for a discussion, please continue the discussion there, and put a short note with a link to the relevant location on this page.
    • If you cannot edit this page because it is protected, please place your comments on this page and they will be addressed.

    Managing threads

If you'd like to make sure a thread does not get archived automatically after 30 days, use {{Do not archive until}} at the top of the section. Use {{User:ClueBot III/ArchiveNow}} within a section to have it archived (more or less) immediately. A brief Archives page lists them with the years in which those now inactive discussions took place.

    1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I am currently a campus ambassador at Nacka Gymnasium, Sweden for the SvWP-education projects, I believe I can help out online forthe English EDU-program as well.
    2. In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
I am currently an editor on multiple of Wikimedia's different wikis. I am a hardworking wikignome, article reviewer, anti-vandal-fighter, co-dev of Huggle 3 and an helper on IRC.
    3. Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
Oh this one is hard, I've done so much during my time here. I have reviewed hundreds, if not thousands of AfC's, including scanning for copyright infringements etc. However content wise I have created over a hundred articles on SvWP, but one of my last articles I wrote on enWP was Ingela Agardh. I have in the past reviewed some DYKS and submitted a few, I've also translated articles from English to Swedish, but as I said most of my time goes to help others write articles and assisting them with help.
    4. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
Yes I have. Both in real life as a campus ambasadour and in the IRC help channel #wikipedia-en-help connect (just press connect, or read the disclaimer first).
    5. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
Make them feel welcome. If they not not feel welcome upon first contact users most likely turn the other way. Instead of telling users off, we should explain how to do things better.
    6. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
I have not had any major conlicts with any editors. I've had one or two altrications regarding if it is okay or not to revert a banned users edits, but nothing major or specifically related to me. I've also been blocked on SvWP two times. The first time for editing to fast (a rule to maximum edit 1 edit/30 secs) and the second time after an involved admin blocked me for using the words "copyright infringement", which was lifted almost immediately.
    7. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
I edit Wikipedia almost 24/7. I am avalible during most of the day and way over two hours per week.
    8. How would you make sure your students were not violating copyright laws?
I am knowledgeble withing most of the relevent copyright laws and rules which may factor in while writing an article, as I said I am an AfC-reviewer. I would be able to offer consultation with users regarding with what is, and isn't a copyvio and what is allowed on WIkipedia. I would also be able to explain in detail for the teachers if wanted how to identify violations. I have multiple copyvio-check tools to my disposal and a few users to consult when here are discrepencies which requies a second pair of eyes and opinion of the laws.
    9. If one of your students had an issue with copyright violation how would you resolve it?
I would first talk with the student and expain that their might be a problem with their article. I would also notify the teacher/course leader. I would describe exacly what was rong and how it could be fixed without it being to much work for the student. After the problem had been cleared up would as for an RD1.
    10. In your _own_ words describe what copyright violation is.
A copyright violation is a violation of a copyright law or local rule on Wikipedia. It is were a user have copied content and pasted it in the article. If it is a quotation it is alright if within quotation marks an not to much. There is also the problem of images, which is a different aspect where it comes to copyirght violations. If you uploaded an image which you do not own it is a violation, unless it is under fair use or properly attributed.
    11. What else should we know about you that is relevant to being a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I already am an ambassador. Not here on ENwp, however I have compleated all relevant training, and have, in my opinion, enough knowledge to be one here too.

    1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
Please see my Campus Ambassador application.
    2. In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
Please see my Campus Ambassador application.
    3. Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
A difficult question! I'm not engaged in pure content creation, but I do gnome here and there. What I really do is expand and copyedit AfCs.
    4. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
I've gone from editing a typical "here are cookies!" template to handholding editors on AfCs to helping on -en-help.
    5. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
Being able to provide real-time support in a multi-editor system on article drafts from start to finish. The easiest part is the ride - the hard part is getting up to speed.
    6. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
No, thankfully. I hate confrontation and do my best to maintain a civil (talk page) environment :^). No blocks or bans, and no RfArbs.
    7. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
I am able to provide 1 to 2 hours a day for the foreseeable future.
    8. How would you make sure your students were not violating copyright laws?
I'd do my best to teach them how to write good articles without running into cv, as well as show them how to use tools such as copyvios.
    9. If one of your students had an issue with copyright violation how would you resolve it?
Unsure what you mean by violation, but if you mean my student has an article with cv, then I'd blank the page, and hand hold them in rewriting the article.
    10. In your _own_ words describe what copyright violation is.
      Use of works without permission.
    11. What else should we know about you that is relevant to being a Wikipedia Ambassador?
Please see my Campus Ambassador application.

    • Question When you say "Please see my Campus Ambassador application" is this self-referential to this application, or is there something more elsewhere? Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:55, 24 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
      • Sure thing, I also applied for Campus Ambassador approximately a section or two above on this noticeboard. I was thinking of volunteering over the summer to gain a better grasp of what the Education Program does, and thereby have more knowledge to work off of when proposing that MIT have coursework involving Wikipedia. Cheers, E. Lee (talk) 17:58, 24 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ah - I see. Yes you meet all of the expected standards. If you have questions about the education program then ask. I am granting the tools. Blue Rasberry (talk) 18:01, 24 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    course coordinator application

    Name: Crystal Fulton, username: fanowiki

Institution: University College Dublin, School of Information & Communication (formerly School of Information & Library Studies)

    Course title and description:

    IS20010: Advanced Information Skills

This module challenges students to develop information literacy skills that will make them super searchers. As they construct the genealogies of prominent figures in Irish history (e.g., associated with events around the 1913 Lockout, 1916 Rising, the Women's Suffrage Movement, etc.), students will develop essential skills to find, evaluate, use, and manage information effectively in their studies, daily lives, and future careers in public and private enterprise. Exploring information in a range of formats, including text, audio, and visual media, students will gain practical experience with different information resources, as well as opportunities to assess critically the connections between the theoretical underpinnings relevant to our cognitive and affective information behaviour and our interaction with information.

Last year, we were very lucky to have our students' work included in Wikipedia. Working with Rebecca, we helped the students create bios of various historical figures and to add this content to Wikipedia.

I am working with Rebecca O'Neill on this project and she has applied for a space for my students as well at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Education_noticeboard/Archive_10#Course_coordinator_application:_Smirkybec. Rebecca is helping us with technical issues and will be providing ongoing advice to my students during the semester.

Number of students: Registration of 70-75 is anticipated. Because we are in the midst of registration at the moment, we are relying on an estimate based on last year's registration.

Start and End dates September 9-November 27, 2015.

All bios must be completed by the students by November 27th, 2015. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fanowiki (talkcontribs) 16:12, 25 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Campus Ambassador application: pcwendland

    Pcwendland (talk · contribs)

    1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
My department at my university has recently started using Wikipedia editing and content creation as a supplement to normal coursework, but many of our faculty members aren't very familiar with how to wikify an article or aren't well-versed in technology to begin with. I see huge potential in familiarizing students with how Wikipedia articles are created and maintained, but some of the professors could use some guidance on how to best do this. I could help connect faculty and students with the resources — both online and in person — necessary to improve their classroom use of Wikipedia. In addition to the technical aspects of incorporating it into coursework, I also want to help explain that the all-too-common view of Wikipedia as a terrible source is far from the truth; though citing a Wikipedia article in a research paper obviously isn't something I would do, Wikipedia typically my first stop to understand the basics of a topic and find multiple sources that go into more depth about it. Having this free source of information has helped me immensely, both in formal academic pursuits and in helping me learn about all sorts of things that interest me. I hope to encourage students to become more involved in and see the benefit of free and open access resources, via both Wikimedia projects and other organizations.
    2. Where are you based, and which educational institution(s) do you plan to work with as a Campus Ambassador?
I am just starting my fourth (and last) year at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, but I also plan to attend graduate school (university to be determined).
    3. What is your academic and/or professional background?
I have one year left for my bachelor's in food science with a minor in microbiology. I have experience working in labs focusing on food microbes, soil microbes, crop yields, biofuel, and more, and I'm incredibly passionate about my studies. I was also raised by a grammar and spelling fanatic and a researcher, so I have quite the affinity for proper grammar and style and solid citations.
    4. In three sentences or less, summarize your prior experience with Wikimedia projects.
Many of my edits are short and sweet - spelling, grammar, and errors; citation needed tags; reversion of spam/vandalism; etc. However, it's the "nitty gritty" of Wikipedia that I think I like most, and that is what I hope to focus on with our faculty. Having uniform formatting and citation guidelines is important in creating a cohesive online encyclopedia, and doing so helps maintain a reputation for accuracy and consistent style.
    5. What else should we know about you that is relevant to being a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I think most of what I want to say is covered above!
    Discussion

We have what appears to be an elementary teacher getting ready to have her class try to build out a page about their school. It would be good is someone familiar with the WP educational programs contact her before she starts hitting pitfalls. A couple of problems I see already: 1) Elementary schools are not inherently notable, so she may encounter issues with that. Also 2) she has created an "under construction" page at the school's name, and such pages are not normally allowed for any length of time. I've left the page untouched for now, so that someone more used to dealing with educators can be the one to handle the situation. - TexasAndroid (talk) 13:27, 28 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Student usernames

We seem to have a lot of students signing up accounts just now, which is good. Quite a few seem to be using their student number and their real name as their account name, which seems to me quite a lot less good, for them at least. I'm not sure how Wikipedia's contact with educators works, but is there some way we could encourage instructors to discourage this sort of thing?

My concern is mainly for the good of the students; it's not hard to see one of them getting into a dispute with some unscrupulous character, and said unscrupulous character using their name and student number to contact their school, impersonating them, and causing all sorts of real-life difficulties. GoldenRing (talk) 04:06, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

GoldenRing: We encourage instructors and students to think carefully about usernames and anonymity. Here's the section of the current instructor training — which instructors go through before they set up a class — that discusses it: Wikipedia:Training/For educators/Creating accounts. Many student do end up using (what appear to be) real names, but in the several years of formal education programs on English Wikipedia, I don't recall any specific cases where this has caused a problem for a user.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:11, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
