Welcome to the Africa De-Stubathon! This will be held from Saturday 15th October to Sunday 27th November. It is a general stub elimination contest, with the intention to cover all topics. The idea is simple: blast away as many of our 37,000 + Africa stubs as possible! There is $2380 (about £1945) available in total for prizes for this, to whoever who fleshes out the most stubs from every country of Africa, the most expansions for geography, wildlife and women, and for producing Good Articles. As there are 55 countries, it gives more editors the chance to try to win something for a given country as it will be a significant challenge for other editors to match the destubs for each country and out-do them to win the prize. All that is required for this is basic article expansions and improvements. To "destub" an article all you have to do is ensure it's minimum 1.5 kb (1500 characters) readable prose in total, which you can measure using this tool. The existing text and text you add is expected to all be verifiable and adequately sourced to reliable sources, with the expected Wikipedia:Citations drawn up. Whoever "destubs" the most articles for a given country wins a prize, and whoever wins the most "destubs" for the most countries will be crowned the overall winner.
Though the Destubathon is primarily intended as a general de-stubathon to cover all topics, this is being run in a way to compliment Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red and Wiki Loves Women, a successful project which has already improved/created hundreds of articles about West African women on wikipedia. There will be a significant prizes for the people who destub the most articles on geography and wildlife and the most articles destubbed and created (no stubs) on women throughout the month. Entries submitted here can be added to the overall Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge as well, but it is entirely the editor's choice and will be asked permission first. Even if you don't want prizes, you're welcome to participate in this as an editathon and find something to enjoy this autumn!

Rules
All entries submitted to this contest must be articles improved between 0:00 UTC +0 time on Oct 15th and 23:59 UTC +0 time on November 27th. Contestants are welcome to work on articles in their sandboxes or offwiki in advance but the actual improvement work to the articles or women new articles have to be done in the mainspace between those dates.
All contestants are free to work on any country they wish, people can work on all countries!
Articles generally must be under 1.5 kb (1500 characters) to be classified as a stub. Usually the articles will have a stub tag on them, but if the article is under 1.5 kb without one this is still permitted. However. There will be some entries which are much longer than that but still with stub tags. If the article has a stub tag and is longer than 1.5kb that's acceptable as long as a little work goes into sourcing/improving it and then removing the stub tag and updating in the talk page.
The article must be directly related to the country you choose a stub for, though in some cases such as mountain ranges and rivers where there may be a transnational overlap this is permitted but the destub may only be listed once for one of the countries. Same applies to wildlife, if the subject populates multiple countries, select one country which you think it might most apply to and list the destub there.
To qualify as a "destub" for listing here, the article must be over 1.5kb (1500 characters) and all of the information in it verifiable to reliable sources, and citations properly drawn up and filled out. No scruffy bare url links or poorly formatted sources. Clean sourcing is one of the most important aspects of this.
There is no minimum expansion requirement, only that the article has to be over 1.5kb (1500 characters) readable prose when you've finished. It may be that the article is already 1.4kb and you simply add a few sentences/clean it up a bit with a source or two and remove the tag. Before submitting, however, you are expected to have verified existing content, copyedited if applicable, and ensure that it is fully sourced. The important thing is that the final "destub" is a clean start class entry at minimum with proper sourcing and no unsourced claims.
Only one editor can work on one "destub" to claim the entry.

Once you've destubbed an article, list it under your name in the appropriate country section and include a url diff of stub expansion/brief explanation of the work you've expanded and final prose count in characters.
If you've destubbed on article on the core stub list, please remove the entry from the core list page so other editors don't try to work on the same article at a later date!
If you want to claim the prize for destubbing/creating the most women biographical articles, you must add a full list of the articles you've done throughout the month and list them under your name at the bottom of the page. To claim that entries can be a cluster of the ones you've submitted for various countries throughout the contest.
New articles on women only are permitted to be entered into the main Destubathon and can be classed as an entry under a given country. This is due to an extreme shortage or bias of articles for some countries. As long as the new entries are not stubs and meet length requirements that's fine. If it's a new entry though, state so. It is important though that you try to also work on some existing women stub articles as well if you can, which will generally require less work anyway. Please ensure though that your new entries are minimum 1.5 kb of readable prose and well sourced and formatted, no stubs, unsourced claims or bare urls, as the overall goal is to reduce stubs.
Remember to update the classification from stub to start (or C...) on the talk page. Editors will be asked in advance whether they want their entries to also count towards Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. Not wanting them to count towards that is fine.
Entries in all languages, especially French, are welcome, but you must ensure that the articles strictly comply with the rules of the contest. Many other wikis have lower standards for sourcing, but for the contest the articles will have to have the same quality standards as on here to make it a fair contest. Articles which have sub standard sourcing or formatted references may be rejected here.
Prize fund
The prize fund for the contest has now been fully approved. The fund is coming from Wikimedia, Wikimedia UK and Dthomsen, which combined is $2380 (about £1945). With Amazon voucher prizes (rather than cash), there's a strong emphasis on encouraging editors to buy books with the prizes they win to further contribute to wikipedia, so this will hopefully prove to be a sort of investment in content building in the long term. The prizes will be sent in e-voucher form by email to the winners at the end of the contest. Though the potential prizes to win are high, I hope that there'll be lots of winners for different countries being rewarded here for different areas of work on this.
In terms of prizes though, I'm going to keep it open for the individuals who win larger amounts. Some editors may prefer annual subscriptions to resources like the British Library, JSTOR etc as a prize rather than vouchers. I'm not certain how much a lot of these subscriptions are, except the British one which I know is about £80, but I think we can permit that if editors win enough to cover the costs of the subscription, and any in excess can just be topped up with Amazon vouchers. As it's all towards the content improvement cause and further research it should be fine.
The requested funds are as follows:
$1100 for 55 sets of $20 prizes for the people who do the most destubs for each African country, approved by Wikimedia.
$400 into whoever destubs the most geography and wildlife articles for the whole of Africa during the contest, with $200 for first place, $100 for second, $50 for third, $25 for fourth, $15 for fifth and $10 for sixth. $300 towards this has been approved by WMUK.
$400 into whoever destubs/creates the most women articles for the whole of Africa during the contest, with $200 for first place, $100 for second, $50 for third, $25 for fourth, $15 for fifth and $10 for sixth. Approved by Wikimedia, and Dthomsen has pledged to give $200 towards this prize. All entries are expected to be a minimum of 1.5 kb readable prose.
$250 into whoever destubs the most articles for the whole of Africa during the contest which are listed on the big core stub list (includes women and top, high and mid importance rated articles for each country), with $150 for first place, $50 for second, $25 for third, $15 for fourth and $10 for fifth. Approved by Wikimedia.
$200 for whoever produces the most Wikipedia:Good articles throughout the contest. $150 for first place, $50 for second. Articles are expected to be thoroughly researched and reasonably comprehensive in relation to sourcing which exists on the subjects. More kudos will be given to contestants who work on the core/top/high importance articles and stubs, but all subjects are welcome. Good Articles can be both articles destubbed or existing article cleanups/improvements. The articles don't have to have all been stubs. Obviously to count in the general destubbing section though for a country the article would have had to have been under 1.5kb (1500 characters) prose to start with. Approved by Wikimedia.

Geography and wildlife stubs
Geography stubs can be found in Category:Africa geography stubs and sub categories by country. Finding wildlife stubs is a little trickier given that many are found in multiple countries and they aren't stub categorized by country, but there are so many stubs that finding one shouldn't be too difficult. Category:Fauna of Africa by region and Category:Flora of Africa by region subcategories and finding specific African nations from Category:Endemic fauna by country and Category:Endemic flora by country should be a good place to start and find articles. The idea is that you can find any stub and improve it, and then elect one country for it to represent, even if found in a dozen or more countries. As long as the article states that that it is found in that country or categorized as such.
This is a Destubathon, so missing articles in general are not permitted, so as to retain a focus on fleshing out existing entries. However, a number of African countries have very few women bio stubs in relation to men. The amount of women bios is often shockingly low, well under 10%, so it would affect the contest for countries which have less than half a dozen. As a result new minimum 1.5 kb readable prose entries for women biographies and topics will be permitted. No stubs though please, as the goal of this is reducing them overall! If interested in working on women articles for this though, try to work on both destubbing existing articles and creating missing articles if you can, as it is a destubbing contest after all and the goal is to reduce the overall stub count by the end!

Overall winners
At the end of November, the articles will be totted up for every country and the 55 prize winners for winning each country mini destubathon will be declared for each country below and their total winnings. Remember that there is a proposed potential $1100 to win for doing the most for every country in total. If two or more editors though end up drawing in number of articles destubbed for a given country, then prize money will be split, so try to ensure that you scoop the prize! Whoever manages to destub any article or destub/create the most articles on women for the most countries by the end of the contest will be declared The Africa Destubathon Champion at the end, and runners up down to 5th place will be announced as well and contest awards given out to the most prolific editors.
Special claims
Though the most articles done for each country and number of countries won overall will determine the formal winners, there a substantial prizes offered for targetting certain areas during the contest which can be claimed below. Please make sure that you make a claim for winning any of the special prizes below before the end of the contest. These will also be judged and for some of them prizes given up to 5th or 6th place and winners declared.

There will be a significant bonus prize for the person who "destubs" the most articles on African women during the month. Given how few women biographies exist between many African nations, I will permit new entries on women providing that they exceed 1.5 kb in prose (no stubs). Most Good Articles
Claims for the most articles promoted to Wikipedia:Good article status are to be put forward below with your user name in a subsection and article list. Remember though that quality is still important, entries are all expected to be well-researched and of reasonable comprehension for GA. Promoting articles on core African topics to GA, rated top/high importance will especially be welcome. For this aspect of the contest, you can work on promoting any African article to GA, including existing B-class articles. The articles don't have to have all been expanded stubs. It is perfectly fine for a few contestants to just work on a couple of important African articles and get them to GA and not participate in the main Destubathon.
Most good articles reviewed
If there's a few people working on Good Articles, we will need reviewers. A prize of around $25-30 will be offered to whoever reviews the most articles during the contest.
