Assignment - Create your Wikipedia account

Make sure to create your Wikipedia account by July 19th, 2021. Some editing tasks in Wikipedia cannot be completed with a new account--if you wait until July 26th, you may not be able to complete the assignment and pass Foundations II.

Account name specifics: Include your FIRST INITIAL and LAST NAME in your account name (we do not recommend using your first name). If you have a common last name, you can add special characters, spacing, or additional information to generate a unique username, e.g. "This is A Nguyen! UCSF SOP Class of 2022?"

Link to create an account:

https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Special:CreateAccount&returnto=Wikipedia:Why_create_an_account%3F

Make sure you are logged in to your account when completing trainings. You must complete a minimum number of edits before you can do certain things on Wikipedia. If you complete the scheduled trainings and all tasks, your edits will be linked to your account automatically.

If you happen to have a Wikipedia account already, we recommend creating and using a different account just for this course.

Assignment - Sign up for the course

Make sure you have signed up for the course using the enrollment link on the homepage / Ilios / emailed by OEIS.

In class - Add a citation in your sandbox

Exercise

Add a citation

In class - Evaluate an article in your sandbox

Your group has been assigned an article. Each person should review it as suggested during class and then post the list of the changes you feel would improve it in your sandbox.

After discussing your proposed changes as a group, copy the edits you agree upon from your sandboxes to the article's Talk page on Wikipedia. Each person in the group should note that they have done this in their sandbox.

Assignment - Guidelines for evaluating Wikipedia articles

Exercise

Evaluate an article

Assignment - Start drafting your contributions

Resource: Editing Wikipedia, pages 7–9

Assignment - Continue improving your article

Exercise

Add links to your article

Now's the time to revisit your text and refine your work. You may do more research and find missing information; rewrite the lead section to represent all major points; reorganize the text to communicate the information better; or add images and other media.

In class - Peer review prompts

Respond to peer review prompts on the ARTICLE talk page, following the statement made the group about its planned edits.

1.    ALL group members should respond to the following prompts (EVERY person in the group should respond to BOTH questions for this part), with specific examples:

·       Persons A, B, C and D: Do the group’s edits improve the article as described in the Wikipedia peer review “Guiding framework”?

·       Persons A, B, C and D: Has the group achieved its overall goals for improvement?

2.    Each group should divide up the prompts below so that a different person responds to each question (one person per question for this part). Please sign your comments with your name and account name so that you receive credit.

·         Person A: Does the draft submission reflect a neutral point of view? If not, specify…

·         Person B: Are the points included verifiable with cited secondary sources that are freely available? If not, specify…

·         Person C. Are the edits formatted consistent with Wikipedia’s manual of style? If not, specify…

·         Person D. Is there any evidence of plagiarism or copyright violation? If yes, specify…

Amin's resources

Here are some resources from the in class on Mon 7/26:

  • link to Wiki literature folder.  Remember that anything titled starting with a number is from a peer-reviewed journal publication, and anything starting with a letter has NOT been peer-reviewed.

How articles are assessed by Wikipedia

The Wiki Ed Foundation created this rubric as a guide for assessing article contributions.

Assignment - Peer review your assigned article (detailed instructions in previous week)

Guiding framework

Milestones

Every student has finished reviewing their assigned articles, making sure that every article has been reviewed.

Assignment - Respond to your peer review

You probably have some feedback from other students and possibly other Wikipedians. Consider their suggestions, decide whether it makes your work more accurate and complete, and edit your draft to make those changes.

Resources:

  • Editing Wikipedia, pages 12 and 14
  • Reach out to your Wikipedia Expert if you have any questions.
Assignment - Polish your work

Continue to expand and improve your work, and format your article to match Wikipedia's tone and standards. Remember to contact your Wikipedia Expert at any time if you need further help!

In class - Complete authorship survey on CLE

The following four statements defining the role of authors are standards used by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. We ask you to confirm through CLE that you have authored changes in Wikipedia according to these criteria, as follows:

  • Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
  • Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND
  • Final approval of the version to be published; AND
  • Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work.
In class - In-class presentation
