In late 2020, WarnerMedia, the parent of entertainment company Warner Bros., announced its plan to release all of its seventeen upcoming 2021 films exclusively to its streaming service, HBO Max. This decision was heavily criticized by Oppenheimer's director, Christopher Nolan, who stated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that "Some of our industry's biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service," also saying that Warner Bros. "don’t even understand what they’re losing," and that the "decision makes no economic sense."[1]
