    userboxes

Everytime I go to look or insert a userbox on my user page, I always forget where it it is. Can someone tell me or give me a link please??

    Thanks,

@Purplelavendermidnights 17: I am not entirely certain what "it" is, but if you are looking for a list of all the userboxes, the link is WP:Userboxes/Galleries. If you are looking for your own user page, you can click your username at the very top of every page. Tollens (talk) 03:55, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Purplelavendermidnights 17 You could of course place the link Tollens provided into your Userpage and it would be there in future when you needed it! I keep all sorts of useful links on my page. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:21, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
thanks! I meant for the lists.

    why my article declined again

    Dear Editor,

I provided a draft that is dedicated to my supervisor Prof. Stefanoi De Marchi who is a great Mathematician.

I tried to write it complete and refer to all his achivements. I have seen many artticles about the other Mathematicians that are not so novel that have been already published in Wikipedia. But I do not know my draft is declined over and over. Please have a look at my draft. The links and references that I put in this draft show that Prof. De Marchi is a briliant Mathematician and I want to make this page in order to introduce him more to the young Mathematicians.

    Thank you in advance,

    Best regards Drmohammadimath (talk) 04:51, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

     Courtesy link: Draft:Stefano De Marchi Tollens (talk) 04:52, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Drmohammadimath: Right now, the draft contains no sources that are independent of the subject. Before the draft can be accepted, it will need at least three reliable sources, independent of the subject (his own works and works by his friends do not count), containing significant coverage of him (not just passing mentions). Wikipedia does not use the typical meaning of the word 'notability' – while in everyday language it simply means "worthy of note" (which this person very well may be), here it means "discussed in reliable sources", and as of now this has not been demonstrated in the article. Tollens (talk) 04:59, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Drmohammadimath, when I search for Stefanoi De Marchi on Google Scholar, page after page of results are for a heart disease specialist by that or a similar name. I do not see any easily accessible results in the scientific literature for the mathematician. Perhaps you should wrote a biography of the cardiologist first, if your goal is to improve the encyclopedia. Cullen328 (talk) 05:05, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
His Google scholar page is this and he has a lot of citation as you can see.
    ‪Stefano De Marchi‬ - ‪Google Scholar‬
    Thanks. Drmohammadimath (talk) 09:08, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Many thanks for your reply.
But in some of the references and links I provided he does not have any role. I can see a lot of pages in Wikipedia for some other Mathematicians who are less brilliant than him but with a published page. Actually I do not know how I can Improve this page more.
    Thanks a lot. Drmohammadimath (talk) 09:07, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Drmohammadimath For academics, Wikipedia has agree a set of notability criteria that are listed at WP:NACADEMIC. Please read that page carefully and consider whether De Marchi can be demonstrated to meet one or more of them. If so, redraft your article to reflect this and add a comment at its top to show which criterion you think he meets. Note 1) the draft must be compliant with this policy and 2) "less brilliant" is your personal opinion, while it is more likely that these other articles have been accepted because they do demonstrate how the individuals pass the notability threshold. How to find out the edit count of pages with templates?

I am trying to find out the total edit count for 2023 of the page Wikipedia:Deletion review. If I go to view history, page statistics, year counts, you can see a sharp drop from 14,000 edits to 100. This is because of the use of templates to organize the requests. Are there ways to be able to see the true total of edits of the page? Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 05:15, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Look at the history and count. There's 4.
Or 5125, if you actually meant edits to the daily subpages and not "true total edits", which really is 4.
And if you really meant "changes to pages during the time they happened to be transcluded on Wikipedia:Deletion review", that's not just-write-a-query level of difficulty, it's many-billable-hours level of difficulty, unless someone's happened to have already written a tool to do so (unlikely). There's no way to trivially get a list of all the templates a given page transcluded at an arbitrary time; it just happens to be mostly predictable for the daily logs. (Only mostly, because once in a while someone edits a subpage like that well after it's delisted, like so). —Cryptic 06:03, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. You are correct, the page itself includes templates for each day that are edited in another page each separately. I was hoping there was a way to get a count of the whole year of the sum of edits in each template in the Deletion review page. I guess if I copy paste into a word counter each template page text, I can get what I am looking for. And as you indicated, it would take me around 6 hours... Sigh. Maybe with some SQL code it could be achieved faster. Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 06:15, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, that's the easy case. 5125. The hard case is, say, looking at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2008 October 9, seeing that it transcludes {{cite news}}, and trying to include edits to Template:Cite news during the time frame while that subpage was on DRV. And to any of Template:Cite news' subtemplates. (But only while both they were transcluded onto Template:Cite news and it was on the daily page and the daily page itself was on DRV.) It's turtles all the way down. The only instant of time when you can get the whole list of transcluded templates is "now". —Cryptic 06:24, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You are absolutely correct. And I didn't notice your SQL query. Neat! I appreciate it much. Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 06:52, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to autoconfirmed my Wikipedia account?

Hye, I am unable to publish my article from sandbox to live audience. I am unable to use 'Move' option in tool section. How can I autoconfirmed my account to publish articles from sandbox?

    Maryam Akmal (talk) 13:21, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Maryam. I have added a header to your sandbox which will allow you to submit it for review. This may take time (unpredictable - anything from minutes to months) but is very strongly recommended for inexperienced editors such as yourself. ColinFine (talk) 13:51, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
A couple of points to address before you submit it:
    1. Wikipedia (like other user generated sources) is not regarded as a reliable source for the purpose of references. Remove the citation.
    2. The article should begin by saying what the subject is. It is only when I saw the picture that I realised it was a building.
    3. Reference no 7 appears to have nothing whatever to do with the subject. Has this been generated by a Chatbot? --ColinFine (talk) 13:56, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Maryam Akmal You are now in the position of having two copies of your draft: one at User:Maryam Akmal/sandbox and the other at Draft:Astana Siraj-Ul-Ashqeen. This may confuse both yourself and the reviewers. Please continue to edit Draft:Astana Siraj-Ul-Ashqeen only, as that is the normal places for drafts, and blank your sandbox. Suggested edit to Omer Khadr article

How do I add the article to his Wikipedia profile? Here is the article that should appear as the first para in the Release para: On April 24, 2015, the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, Canada ordered that Omar Khadr’s application for judicial interim release be granted, on appropriate terms. The decision was made based on unchallenged expert evidence before the Court that his appeal pending before the Court of Military Commission Review in Alexandria, Virginia, has a strong probability of success. The Bowden Institution of the Government of Canada did not file evidence in response to Khadr’s case regarding the strength of his appeal, or his suitability as a candidate for judicial interim release. The position of the Bowden Institution of the Government of Canada was that the Court should decline to exercise its jurisdiction in habeas corpus because granting bail pending appeal would constitute a breach of Canada’s international treaty obligation to continue the enforcement of Khadr’s U.S. sentence, and is barred by the International Transfer of Offenders Act. The Bowden Institution of the Government of Canada also argued that Khadr has not established a Charter of Rights and Freedoms right to bail pending appeal. Rideau 318 (talk) 14:04, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rideau 318 you can try adding that text directly to Omar Khadr, since the article is not protected. If someone disapproves, they will revert your edit, and you can discuss on the talk page. This is the bold-revert-discuss cycle. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 14:10, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Sungodtemple. What is in my suggested addition that is never acknowledged or discussed in Canada is that Khadr has a strong case for winning his appeal. As the reader will see, the Canadian Government did not dispute this point. They also did not dispute the point that Khadr poses no risk to public safety. The Conservative party in Canadian government at that time, before and after this court decision, continued to describe Khadr as a threat to society, a convicted terrorist, murderer, etc. The strength of Khadr's grounds for appeal, which he filed in 2013 is likely the reason that the US DOD has ignored it. If the DOD had a strong rebuttal to the appeal it would have been heard years ago. Rideau 318 (talk) 16:31, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Tony Hinchcliffe

    Hi Wiki team,

I would like to thank you for all the hard work you are putting in. I have donated to this website and I feel that it is a wealth of information.

Please understand that the last part of the page written for Tony Hinchcliffe bio is not unbiased. There were multiple edit request by many users and all of them were ignored. I would like to understand why that is? Why are some sources acknowledged and some are ignored?

Shouldn't we put all the information we have on Tony Hinchcliffe and provide both sides of the story especially for his latest racial jokes?

Here is what is says in the Wiki

In May 2021, Hinchcliffe was videotaped insulting Peng Dang, an Asian American comedian who had introduced Hinchcliffe after performing the previous set at Vulcan Gas Company in Austin. Hinchcliffe said Dang was a "filthy little fucking chink", followed with a series of Asian stereotypes in a mock Chinese accent, and lashed out at audience members who laughed at Dang's jokes, branding them as "race traitors". The video was later shown on Twitter, which went viral and received criticism. As a result, Hinchcliffe was dropped by his agency WME, removed from shows scheduled with Joe Rogan in Austin, and the Austin nightclub Antones announced that it would no longer be involved with Hinchcliffe or his Kill Tony live show.

Vulture reported that during his set, Hinchcliffe stated that Chinese people came to Austin because of the bats and criticized offended audience members for "believing he was serious". Dang stated he did not receive any apology from Hinchcliffe following the incident.

    1. Peng Dang was approached multiple times by Tony to understand why is this a problem. As it is written in the wiki page above and if you see about 10 minutes of Tony's material. He is edgy, insult comedian who is doing this for the laugh, not for the 2. Peng Dang material was quite insulting to white people and Tony's jokes were context based on his set. 3. Joe Rogan did not remove Tony from shows, Tony removed himself. 4. WME did drop Tony during the cancellation period however now they want to have him as a client again and Tony is using the biggest agency in USA to represent him. 5. The cancellation attempt was thwarted when Tony released Peng Dang's full set and after that shown his whole set.

You can see a full podcast on trigonometry in youtube, which I did. This is the least that can be done in order to keep Wikipedia unbiased, uncensored and TRUTHFUL

How to reduce image size of my photo I uploaded

Please could someone help me to reduce the image size of a photo I have now uploaded to a page (James Simpson (Explorer)).

    Thanks Plowdenc (talk) 16:30, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Plowdenc: You uploaded commons:File:Jim taken by Catherine Plowden.jpg to Wikimedia Commons. You could reduce the size of your image on your computer and then upload a newer version. If you want help reducing the version on Commons, you may want to ask at commons:Help:Contents.
A bigger issue is that you uploaded the photo under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license but also added "This image is copyright © Catherine Plowden. All rights reserved". Those statements are not compatible. GoingBatty (talk) 17:00, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Plowdenc If you are Catherine Plowden which you asserted in this edit then you just need to remove the © you added when uploading it to Commons. Alternatively, you can email the Commons volunteers (see c:Commons:Email_templates) to confirm that the copyright holder has released the photo under a CC license. Please do not reduce the file size on Commons: high-resolution images (within reason) are preferred. As you will now see in the article, the size is reduced using the |thumb parameter, or in various ways described at Help:pictures. Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:30, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Conspiracy Theory

Why do you often claim 'conspiracy theory'. You know this is a term coined by the CIA in 1967 and has been used as a way to shut down ideas, good and bad. Why do you need to do this when your job is to share all manner of information? This practice diminishes Wikipedia. 199.47.67.47 (talk) 18:43, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

See conspiracy theory. All Wikipedia articles use the expressions used by reliable sources. If there is a specific article where you think the expression is incorrectly used, please take this up on the article's Talk Page. Mike Turnbull (talk) 19:23, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And note Conspiracy theory#Origin and usage. It's not a term coined by the CIA but I'm not surprised an apparent conspiracy theory supporter would claim that. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:58, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The draft was declined for inadequate sourcing. You resubmitted it without change. This is disruptive editing. Anacrhonist reverted your submission. You reinstated it. This is edit warring.
Stop your disruption now. This is an encyclopaedia: there is no deadline.
Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. Of the links you posted above, one is to IMDB, which is not a reliable source, and the others are interviews with Chhabra, and thus of no relevance to Wikipedia.
I recommend that you do the following:
    1. Pause for a moment
    2. Explain what is your connection with Chhabra. If you are in any way paid or employed by him or his associates, you must make a formal declaration of your status as a paid editor.
    3. Read NACTOR and YFA carefully
    4. Find several sources that are meet all the criteria in Golden rule. If a source does not meet all three criteria, don't waste your and our time on it.
    5. If you can find several sources that meet the criteria, then you can go ahead on the draft. Forget everything you know about Chhabra, and write an article based solely on those sources. If you can't find at least three such sources, then you will know that he does not currently meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability, and know not to spend any more time on this article.

    Italics

I have italicised "macchietta", "sceneggiata", "musicarello" and others, but I wondered if "spaghetti Western" should also be italicised. Thanks in advance. JackkBrown (talk) 16:45, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Only if it's being used in a non-English language. 'Spaghetti' itself has been widely used in English so long that it no longer requires italicisation (in contrast to the three words you instance, which I as an English speaker and retired textbook editor do not recognise): the 1984 edition of The Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors (a standard publishing industry text, which lists only words about which spelling and other doubts might arise) specifically says "Spaghetti, strings of pasta (not ital.)"
'Spaghetti Western' is an entirely English-language term, so also should not be italicised when used in English. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.2.5.208 (talk) 17:14, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Why does the title say "Friuli Venezia Giulia", while the text says "Friuli-Venezia Giulia"? JackkBrown (talk) 19:48, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Presumably because (i) whoever wrote each believed at the time that it was the better choice, and (ii) nobody has subsequently been so worried about the difference that they have wanted to alter the one or the other. -- Hoary (talk) 21:01, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    River

I'm working with lowercases. Is it spelled "Arno River" or "Arno river"? JackkBrown (talk) 19:51, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I presume this is about the Arno, which is in Italy. And I notice that the article title is simply "Arno", with no mention of "river". But I have no particular knowledge of Italian rivers or their naming conventions.
I'm a Brit. Our rivers tend to be called River Mersey, River Tyne, River Thames etc. and we tend to include "River ...", and with a capital 'R', in the name. (I have a vague recollection that I've seen one where it is "Something River" rather than "River Something".) More informally, in everyday life (and outside the context of formal encyclopaedia articles) we tend to say simply "the Mersey", "the Tyne", "the Thames", etc.
The point is that it may vary from country to country.
Now, when I look at the Arno article, and in particular at the cited references listed at the end of the article, they tend to use "Arno River", both in the title and the body of the article.
So overall I surmise that the most appropriate terms are probably "Arno" (one word) and "Arno River" (capital 'R'). Check local context and refs about the river itself.

On this page, which paragraph goes first? "Municipalities and population" or "Government"? JackkBrown (talk) 19:53, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Presumably you're asking which should go first. If you think that the order should be changed, you can change it. If you'd like to ask about the order, try Talk:Province of Prato. -- Hoary (talk) 21:03, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: Regardless of order, MOS:FOREIGN states that English equivalent words should be used in preference to foreign language terms. I done this in the article. Bazza (talk) 09:44, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    "Communes" or "comunes"?

Is spelled "communes" or "comunes"? I found both spellings. JackkBrown (talk) 20:44, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You ask "Is it spelled...". What is "it"? Both words exist. The choice almost certainly depends on context, including location. See, for example, Comune and Commune. And I see that Commune has an entry "Communes of Italy, called comune" where the two spellings are present within that single entry. So follow the convention for the particular context or location of the particular article. Feline Hymnic (talk) 20:55, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: In English, it's ["commune"], but that word is not equivalent to the word comune in Italian and other languages used to describe villages, parishes, towns, etc. I have sometimes replaced comune with "municipality" or similar if it's not part of a name, and is used in normal text or an article's short description. Seeking Information on Gaming-Friendly Car Features

Hello, I'm interested in learning about car models that offer gaming-friendly features such as advanced infotainment systems, comfortable seating, and other amenities for gamers(Redacted). Photos removed

I added photos to the USS Cooperstown article and they have been removed. Why? AAJARUT (talk) 21:13, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Very likely because you put them in the wrong place. If a "gallery" is appropriate, it goes towards the foot of an article, not at its head. -- Hoary (talk) 21:23, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    That’s probably it then. AAJARUT (talk) 21:24, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
AAJARUT, note that you can fix this without having to retype everything. Instead: (i) look in the "History" of the article to find the version that you edited, (ii) opt to edit this version, (iii) copy the "gallery" section into your clipboard, (iv) cancel the edit, (v) edit [the latest version of] the article, and (vi) paste the gallery in. (However, please read and digest Wikipedia:Image_use_policy#Image_galleries first.) -- Hoary (talk) 21:39, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Adjusting the Break Line Height to a fraction ratio

Hello dear editors. Can someone explain for me how can I adjust the break-line height which is placed between 2 lines using <br> ? I need to adjust it to 1.5 times a normal line height.

Thank You for your help in advance ! Bezyjoon (talk) 21:52, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In general, it's probably unwise to attempt to micro-manage the formatting. But on rare occasions, it might be genuinely useful. One example of such an exception is described in the H:ATF section about "song lyrics". Feline Hymnic (talk) 22:06, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for reply, But I'm afraid unfortunately this method is not working for my case which is between 2 consecutive Track listing templates ! I tried it before and it failed. For instance, Please see the formatting for this link , Right before the line "2012 deluxe edition disc two" . That's where I would like to change the break-line height to make the table more readable and elegant.

    Regards
    Bezyjoon (talk) 23:08, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the specific example. Having a real example is always useful.
This is a space between two successive instance of the template Template:Track listing. (It's probably best not to use the word "table" here in this deep technical context, because the this isn't a Wikipedia "table".) Personally? I'd forget it and move on.
But if you want to take it further, then analyse it for its potential generality across thousands of similar articles (not just this particular example) which also similarly have adjacent uses of Template:Track listing. Consider what might benefit that general case. And the place to pursue that discussion at the next step is at the talk page for that template: Template talk:Track listing. For instance, using your example, you might raise the general question of spacing between two adjacent uses of the template.
As an approximate analogy, a very common feature on general article talk pages is that they start with a list of Wikiprojects. Someone has create a higher-level template called "WikiProject banner shell" which acts as a wrapper around a set of several individual "Wikiproject Foo" templates. Picking something at random of my own "watchlist" I see this at Talk:Adoro te devote. So, returning to your case, at the Template talk:Track listing page you you might raise the possibility of a higher-level wrapper around Template:Track listing.
I hope that gives you a next step forward.
In brief: either regard it as low priority and move to something else, or pursue a general suggestion about a higher-level wrapper at Template talk:Track listing.
    Feline Hymnic (talk) 00:04, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the detailed explanation and sorry for using the word Table instead of the Track listing template (Blame it on my imperfect English !). So if I'm not wrong, there is no way to adjust the line-break height between 2 Track listing template in general. I will definitely raise this in the related talk page.
    Regards Bezyjoon (talk) 01:05, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There's nothing wrong with your English, Bezyjoon: 'table' was perfectly correct in a general English-language sense. It's just that Wikipedia has developed internal jargon where certain words and expressions regarding internal Wikipedia matters have very particular meanings, often a little different from their correct or usual meanings in general English.
A prominent example is "Notable", which misleads a lot of inexperienced editors/users, as here it means "has been well noted (documented)" rather that "is worthy of note"" as it does in 'regular English.' The sciences experience similar problems, where for example "theory" and "law" have different meanings than in everyday English – hence the common misguided objection "But it's only a theory!"
Often, hasty-chosen "placeholder" terms invented by researchers (or encyclopaedia builders 'on the fly') become established where better ones could have been devised, and it becomes impractical to change them. No-one can be expected to be familiar with such in-house jargon usages until they have had extended experience of them, and in Wikipedia we mostly learn them by being corrected by more experienced co-editors, so there's no need to apologise. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.2.5.208 (talk) 14:02, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Comma after date at start of sentence?

Is there any guidance in the MOS or elsewhere about use or not of a comma after a date? For example: "In 1787, she caused a minor public scandal when her Self-portrait with her Daughter Julie (1787) was exhibited at the Salon of 1787." I have seen similar sentences both with and without a comma, and seen corrections made in both directions. I know the problem can sometimes be avoided by rewriting the sentence, but my example sentence structure here is very useful in biographical articles. Is there a recommendation? Thanks. Masato.harada (talk) 11:20, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    @Masato.harada: Have you seen MOS:DATEFORMAT & WP:DATEOVERVIEW? Polygnotus (talk) 11:35, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Masato.harada, I'd say that the question of the comma is minor compared with the surplus of "1787"s in that sentence. (Try: "In 1787, she caused a minor public scandal when her Self-portrait with her Daughter Julie was exhibited at the Salon.") Well, it's a preposed adjunct of time (whose standard position would be one of "She caused a minor public scandal in 1787 when her Self-portrait with her Daughter Julie was exhibited at the Salon in 1787." Preposed adjuncts tend to be followed by commas (if written) or a slight pause (if spoken. I'd use a comma, but if another writer wouldn't then I wouldn't insist on it. -- Hoary (talk) 11:43, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Why?

Why does "Trevisana nera" have "nero" in lowercase, while "Ribolla Gialla" has "gialla" in upperc case? I have to say that as much as English-language Wikipedia is better than Italian-language Wikipedia, it really has far, far too much confusion with uppercase and lowercase, something it.wiki does not have. First of all, tell me if it is spelled "Ribolla Gialla" or "Ribolla gialla", because if is spelled in lowercase I have to correct quite a lot of stuff. JackkBrown (talk) 12:06, 5 November 2023 (UT.)

I observe that the article Pinot noir refers to it variously as Pinot noir, Pinot Noir, and pinot noir. I would not regard Wikipedia as a trustworthy source for the capitalisation of vine varieties. Maproom (talk) 13:30, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In this case, JackkBrown, it's probably because nera (black) is an adjective from a common noun, which by Wikipedia:Naming conventions (capitalization) are not capitalised in page titles (unless the first word), whereas Gialla has been presumed (perhaps incorrectly) to derive from the placename of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, in which 'Giulia' (Julian) is ultimately based on a personal name, in English Julius/Julia: English normally retains the capital for both place- and personal names, which are 'proper' nouns, rather than 'common' nouns.
If Gialla does not derive from Giulia or another proper noun, you would have a good case to decapitalise it.
Yes, English orthography is complicated – especially compared to Italian – for historical reasons. Because Wikipedia has mostly been crowdsourced from enthusiastic amateurs, compiling its Manual of Style by ongoing concensus, it is bound to be less consistent that if it had been entirely composed by trained professional editors (of which I used to be one) relying on pre-established formal House style manuals.
It is probably better to think of Wikipedia as a collection of articles (a massive non-fiction anthology) rather than as a single 'work'. Stylistic consistency overall would be a nice thing to have, but consistency within each article is much more important, because it is there that inconsistencies can confuse readers. The inter-article consistency you are spending a good deal of time on, while dear to my heart also, is much less noticeable to nearly all readers. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.2.5.208 (talk) 14:51, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It looks tricky in the languages of the countries where these grapes/wines originated too. Our "List of Italian grape varieties" article would appear inconsistent (why Gialla, Giallo, Grigio, but not bianca, bianco, or nero?), however a similar list on Italian Wikipedia also shows some inconsistencies, and is also quite different from French Wikipedia's version. Stylistic consistency across the board seems like a high-bar, but some guidance to apply here would no doubt be appreciated (if someone can establish what is actually "correct"). -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 19:32, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown: You've edited the article further to add more italics. You should use the {{lang}} template for foreign words: so in this case {{lang|zh|misua}} to give misua. Bazza (talk) 17:15, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Bazza 7, I would in principle, but since misua is not the rendering of a particular systematic transliteration of a Chinese lect, I tend to pause as to whether I should bother tagging/what with, but I would at minimum do {{transl|zh|misua}} so that it's tagged as a romanization and not as Chinese characters. @Remsense: That's fine as well, thanks. It imparts more information about the word than simple italics. Bazza (talk) 17:24, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I have an issue, it’s about the page Ekpeye language. There seems to be vandalism going on in the page by user Egwele. The user constantly deletes information on the page often without any concrete reasons. I have told the user to refrain from deleting information unnecessarily but the user threatened me the user also said I will be reported to the Nigerian authorities. From the looks of it, the user seems to have a problem with the fact that the Ekpeye people have any relations with Igbo people the user believes that the Igbo people have an expansionist agenda against ekpeye people an ethnic group which the user seems to belong to, so, as a result, the user goes through Wikipedia deleting information to anything connecting the two ethnic group the user has done this on pages such as Igboid languages, Ekpeye people, Ahoada but most importantly ekpeye language. I do not know how to proceed I have reverted the user's edits on Igboid languages and ekpeye language but I do not want it to be an edit war. Plaese, also check this page, as there is a lot of inconsistency; many terms are in uppercase letters, and others in lowercase (e.g. "Denomination of Controlled Origin" and "Denominação de Origem Controlada"). Barbara Bloemink Barbara Bloemink (talk) 23:29, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for asking, Barbara Bloemink. If your husband took the photo you'd prefer, then he's the copyright holder. If he doesn't already have a Wikipedia user ID, then ask him to get one. While logged in with that ID, he should go to commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard and follow the prompts to upload the photo, making a note of the (informative) file name. Once that file is available at Commons, it will be automatically available for Wikipedia. Edit the article accordingly. (Yes, your husband could transfer the copyright to you so that you could upload it, but this would be more fiddly. And yes, distinguishing between what's his copyright and what's yours probably seems utterly nitpicky, but we live in a litigious world.) -- Hoary (talk) 23:41, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Better advice, Barbara Bloemink: Don't make any further change to the article Barbara Bloemink. Instead, make edit requests (e.g. that the current photo should be replaced by a new photo that's already at Commons and is named such-and-such) at the foot of Talk:Barbara Bloemink. -- Hoary (talk) 01:05, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I need to talk to someone about a group of less than a dozen Editors that have majority control of an entire category on wiki, over 7k pages, spanning back over 15 years. One editor was previously banned for sock puppet accounts, but his other alternates were never discovered by Wikipedia. I've isolated them. This involves some highly prominent people with their wiki pages caste in highly negative light, along with their discipline. Archangel1966 (talk) 05:24, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have spent over 80 hours researching this over multiple websites to verify my findings. I have extensive documentation to support my assertions. I can assure you as insane as my claim is, I can prove it. I need to talk with someone within legal, or at least someone who is willing to discuss this. There is a small group controlling over 7k pages in one genre alone, which is only one of several. The person leading this is a very famous person, that is being very dishonest towards the living person's pages on Wikipedia being controlled by this group in addition to their profession. I would rather handle this internally with wiki, as it is of sufficient scale that could lead to defamation. Archangel1966 (talk) 05:51, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    'Leam Richardson'
The information is regarding myself and updated by myself.
    please advise
thank you Leam rico (talk) 10:58, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Leam rico The article(not a "page", which has a broader meaning) is not yours in that you get to exclusively decide what appears there. I've said above under which conditions articles are protected, and how you can propose edits. Content should be sourced to independent reliable sources. 331dot (talk) 11:01, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Italics or not?

Do "putto", "amaretto" and "Canal Grande (Trieste)" go in italics? Please also tell me if the terms in the gallery on the 'Canal Grande (Trieste)' page also go in italics. JackkBrown (talk) 13:53, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

According to MOS:FORITA, Wikipedia uses italics for phrases in other languages and for isolated foreign words that do not yet have everyday use in non-specialized English ... Rule of thumb: do not italicize words that appear in multiple major English dictionaries. Under this rule, I would not italicise either "putto" or "amaretto", which both appear in all three of Merriam-Webster, the Oxford English Dictionary, and Chambers 21st Century Dictionary. As for "Canal Grande", the relevant part of the italics guideline appears to be A proper name is usually not italicized, so again it should not be italicised. @Caeciliusinhorto-public: "putto" might be in those dictionaries, but I don't consider it in everyday use in non-specialised English, which is the criteria for the policy you quote. (Cambridge agrees with me.) Bazza (talk) 14:34, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, there's certainly a case that "putto" is only used in English as a specialised/technical term and therefore should be in italics; I think it's accepted as an English word in enough dictionaries that roman type is acceptable, though. (Along with the dictionaries I listed, it's also in Collins and the American Heritage Dictionary; the Cambridge Dictionary is intended as a learner's dictionary, not a full-sized dictionary and so is naturally less comprehensive; it's also not in Longman's which is also a learner's dictionary.) Caeciliusinhorto-public (talk) 14:41, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: Again (as you have asked similar questions before), if this is of concern to you, you need to read and understand MOS:FOREIGNITALICS. That also includes a guideline to correct your false assumption that foreign text "goes in italics": you should be using {{lang}} or similar templates, not placing text text directly in italics yourself.
Your question should therefore be Do "putto", "amaretto" and "Canal Grande (Trieste)" have everyday use in non-specialized English?, the answer to which I think is: no; yes; yes, as a proper noun. Bazza (talk) 14:25, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

When someone improperly removes something, what do I do? 2600:1700:66D0:C100:8493:2271:9D56:BFE4 (talk) 14:07, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Put it back, there's a button on the page's history to do so. (However, I think with your most recent conflict, nothing was improperly removed.) Remsense 14:43, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)The very first step is to consider what you yourself mean by "improper". All information is Wikipedia ought to be backed up by references to reliable sources. If an editor (the "someone" in your question) finds or believes that this is not the case in a certain instance, then removal is one option (among others) the editor may consider. And, with experienced editors, that would be "proper", not "improper". Could you provide a real example of where you believe a removal has been improper and you would like to challenge it? It wasn't a sourcing issue, it was a style/WP:UNDUE issue. Remsense 14:53, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. The “editor” clearly has no insight into my genealogy or what my genealogist has discovered. 2600:1700:66D0:C100:8493:2271:9D56:BFE4 (talk) 15:23, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And why people bother with this is beyond me. 2600:1700:66D0:C100:8493:2271:9D56:BFE4 (talk) 15:24, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm saying your edit is wrong, and this isn't a place for you to ensure that your preferred style is maintained on articles you deem to be important to you. Remsense 15:26, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the article in question (Earl of Lanesborough), I've added {{Unsourced}} as there are no sources cited except to the coat of arms. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:00, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Courtesy link: Earl of Lanesborough. When you say my genealogy or what my genealogist this strongly suggests that you have some sort of very close connection with topic. In that case there is what Wikipedia calls a "conflict of interest": see WP:COI. And that in turn means you generally should not directly edit the article yourself. Instead you should request the exact change, with both a reason and a "reliable source" (see WP:RS) in the article talk page: Talk:Earl of Lanesborough, where it will be assessed by others. This process is described here: Template:Edit COI. Feline Hymnic (talk) 16:07, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to change all "Friuli-Venezia Giulia'" to "Friuli Venezia Giulia" (since 2001 it has been called "Friuli Venezia Giulia"), but it is a bit complicated to do this on all Wikipedia pages. Could you kindly start a bot and give it this command? I think it's doable. Update: could you at least help me with the 70 or so remaining communes? I have done 200 or so, I can't always do everything myself without being helped in anything. I repeat, I am not God, although in this encyclopaedia I am certainly among the best, or the best, in terms of accuracy! All municipalities can be found on this page: Friuli Venezia Giulia. @JackkBrown: Hi there! Try asking on WP:AWBREQ. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:18, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: I don't think that the change should be done by bot, but manually so you can check that each change is appropriate. See WP:NOTBROKEN for some guidance. TSventon (talk) 16:39, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
