::Hi @Qcne! Thank you so much for reviewing! The North Jersey Media Group serves Bergen, Passaic, Morris, and Essex counties, so it is a significant regional newspaper in North Jersey. Here are some articles from them that are more focused:
::# Passaic Mayor Hector Lora Invites Homeless to Third Annual Super Bowl Party (this one was also covered by News12 from the Bronx here)

::Additionally, I found substantial coverage from Univision, an international news outlet:

::As a supplemental resource, there's a profile from Good Chronicle:

I would also like to highlight that the regular coverage of Passaic's initiatives by North Jersey Media Group are a reflection of Mayor Lora's policies.
::Let me know if this is enough! If it's not, then it might just be time to give up the article. Thank you for all your help!!! LMPAJ (talk) 18:57, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

Public figure Wikipedia

Hi,

what are the steps for a person to have a Wikipedia page?, and does it need to be the person applying for it, or management team can request on their behalf?

Kindest Regards Peculiar Flavours Mgmt 2A04:4A43:4F2F:E2F1:55C9:E19B:BA89:DE5C (talk) 02:25, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

They need to pass the general guidelines for encyclopedic notability. See WP:GNG and WP:ANYBIO. There are other relevant guidelines. Please also be aware that promotional editing and editing on subjects where you may have a conflict of interest is not allowed. See also WP:PAID. Best regards... -Ad Orientem (talk) 02:29, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. If you think you have a subject that meets our guidelines you can suggest the page be created at WP:RA. -Ad Orientem (talk) 02:31, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, if the person is truly notable someone who doesn't have a conflict of interest will likely create the article on them someday. ‍ Relativity 02:47, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest you reframe your question as "what are the criteria for Wikipedia to have an article about a person? Others have answered the question.
Note that if such an article is created (preferably not by the subject or anybody associated with them) it will not belong to the subject, it will not be controlled by the subject, and it will not necessarily say what the subject would like it to say. Please see the policy page WP:OWN and the essay WP:PROUD. ColinFine (talk) 10:57, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Arabic

I am writing to report that Wikipedia Arabic has a message on every page promoting lies about the Israel/Hamas war in Gaza. Every page of Wikipedia Arabic has a banner at the top of the page, even when the topic has nothing to do with the war. This is extremely disturbing, and only visible to users who choose Arabic as the language. Please remove this immediately. If you want the banner to remain, allow it on topics related to the conflict, but someone wanting to know what a bathroom is in Arabic should not have an indoctrinating banner at the top of the page. 2600:1700:2980:FE30:E0FA:2B5D:8EE:9DF4 (talk) 13:32, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. How can I know who my mentor is? Thank you in advance Sofia009 (talk) 14:46, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sofia009, according to Wikipedia:Growth Team features/Mentor list, you will see your mentor's welcome message in a 'Your mentor' box on your 'Homepage' tab. TSventon (talk) 15:03, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much, @TSventon. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find it. I quite remenber that box the first time I logged in, but it does not longer appear. Sofia009 (talk) 17:00, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sofia009, have you gone to your preferences and ticked the three new user boxes at the bottom of the first tab? I have just done that and I now have a Homepage tab to the left of my Userpage tab and there is a box with my mentor to the right of my Homepage. TSventon (talk) 17:42, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think "he" is repetitive here (I didn't write these sentences)? He was likely born between 1588 and 1590. Pieter van der Borcht was born and died in Brussels, according to 17th-century Flemish art historian Cornelis de Bie's work on painters called Het Gulden Cabinet. He was a pupil of the prominent Brussels painter of landscapes and civil celebrations Denis van Alsloot from 1604. He became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1625. He must have traveled to Augsburg in or around 1615 as a work mentioned in the Hofstede de Groot Index Cards was inscribed: "Peeter van der Borcht van Brussel in Ausborch. 1615." It sounds as if you and your boss have a (very common) misconception about Wikipedia. Neither you nor your boss own or control Wikipedia's article about them, and you should not be editing the article directly. Once you have declared your status as a paid editor, you will be welcome to make edit requests on the article's talk page, and an uninvolved editor will review your requests, and decide whether and how they should be implemented. Is there a tool that detects wikilinks from mainspace to draftspace? --Hammersoft (talk) 02:58, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Hammersoft for edits later than November 10th, 2020 by non-ec editors there's Special:AbuseFilter/1090. Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 06:58, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not a tool, but I wrote quarry:query/59495 some time ago (and have just rerun it); it generates a complete list. Pretty trivial to turn it into a database report that updates itself on-wiki if you want. —Cryptic 07:17, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Turns out there was already an onwiki version at User:SDZeroBot/Articles with links to drafts - it happened to be one of the bot's demonstration queries in its botrfa. With its operator's permission, I've updated the generating query and moved it to WP:Database reports/Articles with links to drafts so, y'know, people can find it before they duplicate the work instead of after. —Cryptic 09:39, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Srbernadette: I am not sure how to "fix" that citation. It is a link to a stock photo website showing a hand-written letter. This does nothing to support the sentence in the article about the Library of Australia. Perhaps the url provided is wrong? I suggest re-evaluating your source. Difficult for me to edit, sorry. The citations mentioned are OK now I think...

Please can you add this file to the "Wikimedia Commons has media related to David Blackburn." at the bottom of his page: David Blackburn (Royal Navy officer)- which has many images in it already. Is that a reasonable idea? Here is the file - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sarah_Meadows_Martineau_(d.1800).jpg Thank you in advance 175.38.42.62 (talk) 10:02, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am also unfamiliar with how to do that. Needs help from someone else.BlueWren0123 (talk) 10:22, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're proposing to add commons:Category:David Blackburn to commons:File:Sarah_Meadows_Martineau_(d.1800).jpg. You add categories to images in Commons just as you add categories to articles in Wikipedia. But Martineau wasn't Blackburn. (Likewise, Edith, Sacheverell, and numerous other more or less noteworthy Sitwells weren't Osbert Sitwell, and commons:Category:Osbert Sitwell doesn't include pictures of them, other than incidentally.) -- Hoary (talk) 11:42, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have failed to deduct it from Wikipedia:Citing sources and Wikipedia:External links: When an information in an article is directly taken from an external link (update: which is set in the "external link" section of the article) - does that require an inline citation? If required, let's distinguish cases depending on their complexity: From only one external link to only one specific webpage (so one click is sufficient for the reader to find the information for the source) to several structured external websites (so the reader might have to guess in which source to look for the informatiuon, and then find the right webpage for getting the info of the source). --KnightMove (talk) 11:29, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, KnightMove. I'm not sure I quite understand what you are asking, but I'll answer as best I can.
All information in an article should be available from a reliable published source - it doesn't matter what medium that source is published in, as long as a reader can in principle obtain it (eg by ordering a book from a major library). If the source is online, it's easier, but that's not required.
The policies don't absolutely require all information to be cited to its published source, but it's certainly preferred to cite everything inline, and if information has been challenged, then it must be.
The citation should enable the reader to determine the likely value of the source, and to find it specifically; so it should contain information such as title, date, author, publisher, journal, issue, page number (obviously, not all of these are relevant to every citation). If the information is available online, then it is helpful (but not essential) to provide a link to it, within the citation - but there's no point in providing a link which doesn't lead directly to it.
Apart from citations, external links are allowed in articles only in restricted circumstances: see WP:ELYES.
Have I answered your question? ColinFine (talk) 12:22, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but unfortunately not. I have added a clarification. --KnightMove (talk) 14:03, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If I understand your situation, the external link should be converted into an inline reference (and removed from the External links section). Clarityfiend (talk) 14:13, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why would you remove an external link, which perfectly serves the purpose of providing further information on the article topic to the reader, from the external link section and "hide" it among inline references which do, in general, not serve that purpose; just because an information from the external link was added in the article? As most articles contain material from external links by default, this would reduce "external link" sections to absurdity. --KnightMove (talk) 15:29, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@KnightMove: Because Wikipedia is not a link farm, and external links are supposed to be used sparingly. See Wikipedia:External links. However, if the external link is really useful for further reading and it is separately also being used as a reference, then keep it in both places. -Arch dude (talk) 18:50, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks, I will make it so. --KnightMove (talk) 07:22, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Editing Mediawiki

I would like to add an edit suggestion to Mediawiki but I couldn't find a a place to comment on the GitHub. Where should I comment?

My suggestion is as follows:

Is there a way to move a a section of an article and keep transfer the edit history to the new page in Wikipedia? wikipedia:Section_move#Step_5:_Move_the_content Implies that this isn't possible. If there is a Mediawiki fork with this feature, I recommend for it to be added to the main branch. If not I will begin development, if there is interest. Garvey 96 (talk) 11:36, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would start at WP:VPT. That's specifically within Wikipedia, but it's likely that people there can tell you whether the facility is available, whether it has been discussed before, or where to go next. ColinFine (talk) 12:23, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, there is no such capability. The MediaWiki database does not record which section of a page is being edited, so it is not possible to select only the edits which changed content in any particular section. When we are moving the content of an entire section to a different page, our content license requires attribution to the original contributors, and our policy on copying within Wikipedia suggests that noting the origin either with a link in the edit summary or a template on the talk page of the destination page satisfies the attribution requirement.
I don't want to say it's impossible, but I think it would be a very large challenge to implement history-preserving section moves. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 14:06, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's feasible to copy the entire history of a page - not just those relevant to one section - into another title, with the right permissions: export to xml, then import it back at another title. It's not practical at Wikipedia itself, though, since exports are limited to 1000 revisions, importing from xml is limited to stewards and these two users, and I doubt they would be willing to do it. —Cryptic 15:24, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It would probably be more practical for someone who is an admin on both Wikipedia and one of its import sources (a surprisingly large group of people given that includes test2wiki where anyone who is an admin here would probably be given it on request) to import the page from enwiki to some other wiki and then import it back here. But, while I personally think this is sometimes a reasonable thing to do, the consensus generally is to not do it (i.e Wikipedia:Requests for page importation/Archive 9#Import of en:Triplex locomotive to User:Pechristener/Multiplex locomotive), which I will respect. * Pppery * it has begun... 15:33, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Once upon a time mw:Extension:Duplicator existed, but it was never deployed to WMF wikis and bitrotted away. * Pppery * it has begun... 15:33, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Garvey 96: You're new here so you may not know how our article sections typically work. A section heading may be added to existing content which was written over years. Paragraphs or sentences may be moved in and out of a section within the same article. A full page edit may make changes to both a section and other parts of the page. Even if an edit only changes one section, many users don't use the section edit feature which adds the section name in the edit summary. Edits by bots usually don't have a section name in the edit summary. And a section may be renamed multiple times anyway. Page histories are shown in chronological order. If a section is moved to an existing page with a page history then a merged page history would be a huge mess if edits to the two original pages are interleaved. The only realistic option appears to be copying the entire page history to a new page like mw:Extension:Duplicator did but we never used it. I suggest you drop the idea. There are too many problems and we don't need it when we can just link the source page in the edit summary if a section is moved. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:01, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, We would like to publish a company page for one of our Clients, Group-IB, how can we do that? 80.227.124.67 (talk) 13:53, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For one, you should create an account that explicitly discloses your paid relationship to the client. Typically that is made on your user page. You may start a draft, but be aware that if it passes muster (that is, it isn't promotional or written in a non-neutral tone) and makes it into the encyclopedia proper, neither you nor your client will have control (nor will you be encouraged to directly edit it at that point) over what is written down if reliable sources state information, even those that depict your client in a bad light. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 13:57, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Once you've disclosed your connection with the subject, as suggested above, I'd like to direct you to our Articles Wizard. This tool will assist you in determining whether the topic you wish to write about is suitable for a Wikipedia article. Upon completing the wizard, if your subject aligns with Wikipedia's guidelines, you'll have the option to create a draft and submit it for review through the Articles for Creation project. The members of this project are experienced editors; however, due to high demand, there may be a waiting period before your draft is reviewed.
Once you submit your draft, it will be placed in a category open for review by any submission reviewer. Approval may take over a month due to the current backlog. If your submission is accepted, an editor will approve it, and you'll be notified once the article is created. If your submission isn't accepted, feedback will be provided on the page, detailing areas for improvement. You'll receive a notification via a message on your "Talk" page regarding this feedback. I hope this helps. – DreamRimmer (talk) 14:07, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I also recommend that you read WP:BOSS, and probably show it to your clients. ColinFine (talk) 17:00, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown: It's similar to Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2023 November 27#"Forum" or "forum"? If it's used as a general noun for the type of structure then it's lowercase. If it's used as the proper name of a specific structure like Propylaea (Munich) or Propylaia (Acropolis of Athens) then it's uppercase. There may be sentences where both interpretations are possible. Grandmother

Dear team,

My grandmother, Dorothea Livio, unfortunately passed away recently. She was a famous Jewish singer from Romania living in Israel.

There are already two exisiting pages of her, one in Romanian and one in Hebrew (included below for your reference).

Now I would also like to add an English version, however, as I am new to wikipedia I am not sure whether I should make an entire new page, of if I can somehow recylce the Romanian of Hebrew page and only provide a translation.

Many thanks in advance for you help and consideration.

Romanian link: https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothea_Livio

Hebrew link: https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%93%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%95%D7%AA%D7%99%D7%90%D7%94_%D7%9C%D7%99%D7%91%D7%99%D7%95 Noamcosla (talk) 19:39, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am sorry for your loss. You may first wish to examine the notability criteria for musicians to see if your grandmother meets at least one aspect of them. This may be different thant the Romanian or Hebrew Wikipedias, as each Wikipedia is a separate project, with its own editors and policies. An article about her may be acceptable on those versions, but not necessarily acceptable here. 331dot (talk) 19:43, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Noamcosla. I have read machine translated versions of both articles since I do not speak either Romanian or Hebrew. Your grandmother had a long and interesting life. The shortcoming of those articles is that they are poorly referenced by the standards of the English Wikipedia. You would need to create references to independent, reliable published sources that devote significant coverage to her life. Staff written obituaries are OK, but family written obituaries aren't. The coverage could be in Romanian, Hebrew, English or any other language. Please read WP:TRANSLATE for other important information. Cullen328 (talk) 20:01, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion request on The Ambassadors (Holbein)

Hi there

I added an image to The Ambassadors (Holbein) being File:Holbein-tube.png. There is an image deletion request on it which I have added a dispute to, following the instructions in the notice, on the file page and talk page. However, the notice at The Ambassadors (Holbein) states that "This file has an invalid non-free use claim and may be deleted after Friday, 12 January 2024". How do I ensure this does not happen while the fair use issue is debated and resolved? Jim Killock (talk) 21:35, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Name change suggestion

I wonder. The article says little about her, but mostly refers to her as Mable E. Buland, merely mentioning at the end that she married some fellow named Campbell. This suggests to me that "Mable Buland" would be a better choice. The WikiProject perhaps most likely to be interested is Women's History; you might raise the matter at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women's History. -- Hoary (talk) 23:26, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:COMMONNAME. Since she is referred to as "Buland" through most of the article, it may be that "Mabel Buland" would be a better title. But it depends how the sources refer to her. ColinFine (talk) 23:27, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

January 11

Can someone help me change the black and white image of William Curtis 1775 on the Portrait Gallery page to a color image of it that I have and that was supplied for this purpose? The image is not online, so it's a problem. I guess it's not possible.

. DEvans2 (talk) 00:36, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DEvans2, if the image dates from the 18th century then it will be in the public domain and can be used for any purpose. You can upload it to Wikimedia Commons yourself, applying commons:Template:PD-Art-100. Once it's at Commons, you can use it wherever appropriate. -- Hoary (talk) 00:45, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I uploaded it but didn't satisfy the value question. The portrait is 18th century; there should be no problem but it is made too compliicated. Unless there is an easier way, I give up. DEvans2 (talk) 04:36, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
DEvans2, what was this "value question"? -- Hoary (talk) 06:35, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
DEvans2, is this about https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Curtis_1775,_RHS_Lindley_Collections.jpg ? Maproom (talk) 08:08, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, then it did upload! Many thanks for the instructions. Can someone help me replace the black and white image of it with this at
the wikipedia site, given above, for the artist Gilbert Stuart? It's in the Gallery of Pictures at the end, the only black and white one.
Either please do it or give me further instructions. Thanks again. DEvans2 (talk) 20:53, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
DEvans2, if it is indeed commons:File:William_Curtis_1775,_RHS_Lindley_Collections.jpg, that had a surely well-meant but fictitious copyright waiver (donation to the public domain), which I've changed to something appropriate. But as for its "Summary", I can correct "author" (to Gilbert Stuart) but I don't know "date" or "source". Please edit the summary. -- Hoary (talk) 08:37, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm trying to change it. The date is 1775 as already cited. The owner or source is the Royal Horticultural Society, London, which gave me permission to post it. I wasn't knowingly doing it wrong. I haven't done this before. DEvans2 (talk) 21:08, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
DEvans2, fixed. I'm sure that you have meant well; and yes, editing Mediawiki can be frustrating at first. Don't give up! -- Hoary (talk) 01:51, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
DEvans2, now also categorized, I hope accurately. -- Hoary (talk) 02:14, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Do you think you could make the switch - the color mage for the black and white? I'm afraid of getting into a real mess. DEvans2 (talk) 02:22, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Font size in infoboxes

According to Wikipedia:Manual of Style we should "specify font sizes relatively (for example with font-size: 85%) rather than absolutely (like font-size: 8pt). The resulting font size of any text should not drop below 85% of the page's default font size." According to MOS:FONTSIZE we should "avoid using smaller font sizes within page elements that already use a smaller font size, such as most text within infoboxes, navboxes, and references sections." Does in mean the text in the templates below 85% of the of the page's default font size violates this rule? For example goal, yellowcard in Football box. Font size is much smaller than it should be? Example:

Italy 1–1 (a.e.t.) France
Report
Attendance: 69,000

Look at the font size of the minutes (5', 19' etc.) --Corwin of Amber (talk) 03:40, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that violates MOS:FONTSIZE. I can't see what the reason is behind presenting that information with a smaller font-size. Bazza (talk) 09:52, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mass edit?

I noticed that there are a ton of pages tagged for needing verification from August 2022. All of the location ones really just need the first of the two notes citations (the one just going to census.gov) removed. Is there a way for someone to mass-fix this?

--- The note, as it is, is always in the Demographics section as:

"Note: the US Census treats Hispanic/Latino as an ethnic category. This table excludes Latinos from the racial categories and assigns them to a separate category. Hispanics/Latinos can be of any race."

It is the first of the two that needs to go, because the second has it covered. Edenaviv5 (talk) 04:07, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mining plans

I am not sure about anyone in particular to contact, but poking around I found this website – https://www.oldminer.co.uk – which appears to have a significant amount of information and images related to both. I'll keep looking for a little bit and see if I can find anything more. Tollens (talk) 10:57, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I've referenced "Notts ex-miner" in the past, but I think he only puts up plans of disasters, not collieries generally. I've also checked the Durham Mining Museum but neither colliery has a plan, in part because both collieries avoided a major disaster. I had a quick scan of Coal magazine, courtesy of National coal Mine online without luck. There is a potted history of Bolsover here and one for Shirebrook here along with some surface photos. But I'm afraid I can't locate any plans. Regards, Martin of Sheffield (talk) 11:11, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My edits

My edits on medical subjects have been edited without proper explanations, in fact the "explanations" are as bizzare they could be I question the sincerity of wiki in ensuring who can make the edits and which edit stays. Have you attempted to discuss your concerns with the other editor? 331dot (talk) 13:44, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We have been discussing this on talk pages but FlaminMongrel is not satisfied with the result there. This is canvassing. Their comments above are a gross misrepresentation of the facts. I have provided sources to back my comments many times over the years. They are right there on the talk page where we have been discussing. BTW, not that it is a requirement, I am educated as a Physician assistant and Physiotherapist (the latter not in the U.S.), so I have the creds and knowledge to edit medical topics.
There also seems to be some language difficulty here, as the constant and years-long conflict over the classification of Physiotherapy as an Allied health profession (AHP) is largely from Indian/Pakistani/Arabic IPs and editors. Interestingly, India's National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions includes Physiotherapy, so even there we have an official classification of Physiotherapy in India as an AHP. Bold

I would like to point out that in the Montepulciano (grape) and Verdicchio pages I removed the bold text from some wines because only some were written in bold while all the others were not; it didn't make sense. @JackkBrown: I did a browser page search (Ctrl+f in Windows browsers) for "bold". Montepulciano (grape)#DOCs and DOCGs says: "The wines of which Montepulciano must account for a majority of the blend are in bold." Verdicchio#DOC regions says: "The wines for which Verdicchio must account for a majority of the blend are in bold." I'm not qualified to judge whether this bolding is appropriate and correct but if the bolding is removed then the explanation must also be removed. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:57, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would say that per MOS:BOLD, it is not appropriate to use boldface for this purpose. However, the distinction between required wines and non-required wines should not be lost in the process of removing the boldface. Perhaps an asterisk, superscript or other similar indicator could be used to replace it. CodeTalker (talk) 18:04, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"majority of the blend are in bold" finds one more hit at Fiano (grape)#Other DOC wines if somebody wants to work on this. It doesn't actually have any bold but one was removed in 2014.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 18:33, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

So, what do we do? JackkBrown (talk) 09:05, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dunno, what do you think? Do you see now why others have held back from trying to impose absolute consistency across all articles? Sometimes different 'rules' can come into conflict with each other and/or with practicality and common sense: this is why the fifth of Wikipedia's foundational Five pillars is "Wikipedia has no firm rules." {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.198.104.88 (talk) 10:53, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Steffan Aquarone

The subject of the Wikipedia article (Steffan Aquarone) is standing for public office as a Parliakmentary Candidate for North Norfolk. His article is unbalanced, and bears little relationship to the truth of his business career. All my changes are factual, a matter of public record. My comments seek to re-balance the article. Aquarone has sought to suppress the truth in a different media outlet. I don’t understand why you have chosen to delete my comments. 2A02:C7C:6BB9:2600:354D:96D:F0C2:CEAE (talk) 17:48, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If your changes are supported by "the public record", then it should be easy for you to add the references we require. If you have any problems with the formatting of the references, then put your proposed changes on the article's talk page along with some pointers of any sort to the appropriate parts of the "public record", and ask for help in formatting the references. We insist on references because we are all volunteers and do not have a paid staff of researchers and fact checkers. -Arch dude (talk) 18:44, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Once you start a merge request do you have to wait at least a week?

Because I just realized after starting a merge discussion that no one's posted on either talk page for four years, and I somewhat doubt anyone will respond. Further than that, are there any good guidelines for what constitutes an "uncontroversial merge"? PARAKANYAA (talk) 18:43, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think Wikipedia:Be bold might be the nearest guideline. Would suggest giving it at least the weekend now that you've opened the discussion. Have you notified Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Crime and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject California? You might attract participants there. Folly Mox (talk) 01:53, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing errors on Peter Schreiner (Byzantinist)

Reference help requested. Need help with Peter Schreiner (Byzantinist). Any help is welcome. ShockedSkater (talk) 22:09, 11 January 2024 (UTC) Thanks, ShockedSkater (talk) 22:09, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ShockedSkater The main problem with the article is a lack of inline citations. It is important to find citations for the text before translating a foreign language article as it may not be possible to find them later. de Wikipedia in particular does not require as many inline citations as en Wikipedia.
The error messages are caused by the DNB template, e.g. 963445073, which is a template for the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek in de Wikipedia, but becomes an incomplete template for the Dictionary of National Biography in en Wikipedia. TSventon (talk) 00:43, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
DNB at en.wiki is not a template for the German Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (de:Vorlage:DNB) but rather it is a template for the English Dictionary of National Biography (Template:DNB). Most likely the template that you are looking for at en.wiki is DNB-IDN.

This forum is meant to provide occasional help, so that a user can learn from their request and going forward be able to do things themselves. We don't mind helping you, but at some point you need to learn from your mistakes. 331dot (talk) 09:08, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
331dot, as a former professional editor and proofreader, I am well aware that spotting typos like can be quite difficult for some people without an aptitude for it, even ignoring any barriers like poor eyesight, dyslexia and inadequate display devices that might be in play. The former fad for the whole word method of teaching reading, inimical to spotting single-character errors, can also have a lasting legacy.
We are familiar with this long-time contributor; generally it takes less time to just correct such reported problems than to try cajoling her into doing something beyond her capacity. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.198.104.88 (talk) 11:13, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, as I was not familiar this, but I wonder if a mentor might be beneficial for this user- someone specific who can review their edits. 331dot (talk) 13:27, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that spotting typos and other smol errors is not necessarily equally easy for everyone, but when there's an error message right next to the typo saying invalid date it should generally be possible for a person to figure out the problem. Noting for completeness that not all invalid dates are equally trivial, but a year centuries in the future is on the more trivial side.
And yes, it's much quicker to fix these errors than try to teach this contributor, but another option would be leaving the affected articles in Category:CS1 errors: dates (140) for gnomes to fix organically, instead of posting about each of them at this venue without ever showing signs of improvement. Option to change language

I came to read this article : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamzah_Fansuri It seems to me there is no option to change a language! Sometimes I read in English but I need to read in Arabic language as well To go to translation tool, it takes a long time or not working. As much as I know , there is a shift change for languages any time It looks like nowadays the choice of changing languages is missing. I want someone or a moderator here help me and fix the page errors or something is not working. MohammadAA33 (talk) 12:16, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can read equivalent articles in other languages' Wikipedias by using the "Languages" section at the foot of the left hand menu bar. David Biddulph (talk) 12:45, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
MohammadAA33. en Wikipedia has recently adopted a new skin (appearance), there is information on how to choose the old skin at Wikipedia:Vector 2022. Foreign language versions can be accessed by clicking on the word languages at top right, rather than bottom left as in the previous version. The other language versions are written by editors, rather than automatically translated, so Hamzah Fansuri does not currently have an Arabic version. Draft:Hector Carlos Lora

Hi! I would like someone to review the Draft:Hector Carlos Lora and give some pointers for improvements. Other editors have mentioned it would likely be denied as it currently is. What are areas where I can improve it for approval? Thank you so much! LMPAJ (talk) 14:59, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @LMPAJ. The key thing is if Hector passes the WP:NPOLITICIAN threshold. You will note Mayors aren't inherently notable, so you'd need to prove notability by showing significant press coverage. I can see a lot of sources from North Jersey Media Group, but a lot of these are trivial mentions or routine coverage. I've had a look at the other sources and they suffer from the same issue.
Are there any sources that talk about Hector (not interviews with him) that are from major regional or national newspapers/TV? Qcne (talk) 16:59, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Qcne! Thank you so much for reviewing! The North Jersey Media Group serves Bergen, Passaic, Morris, and Essex counties, so it is a significant regional newspaper in North Jersey. Here are some articles from them that are more focused:
1. Passaic Mayor Hector Lora Invites Homeless to Third Annual Super Bowl Party (this one was also covered by News12 from the Bronx here)
2. Lora promises to work for unity as mayor of Passaic
3. Acting mayor grapples with Passaic's legacy of scandals
4. Passaic's Dignity House for homeless residents recognized by Gov. Murphy
Additionally, I found substantial coverage from Univision, an international news outlet:
1. Hector Lora, El Dominicano Que Fue Elegido Como Alcalde de Passaic, Nueva Jersey
2. Hector Lora Habla Sobre su Lucha Contra La Corrupcion y de Como se Acerca a la Comunidad para Escuchar Sus Peticiones
3. Héctor Carlos Lora Dominicano Alcalde de Passaic, New Jersey rescata desamparados (this one also was covered by Daily Voice here)
As a supplemental resource, there's a profile from Good Chronicle:
1. Hector Carlos Lora – Making a Difference as the Second Dominican-American Mayor of the City of Passaic
Notably, he was reelected in 2021 with a record 88% of the votes, indicating his substantial impact and recognition within a community that is over 70% Latino (which explains the coverage from Univision). I would also like to highlight that the regular coverage of Passaic's initiatives by North Jersey Media Group are a reflection of Mayor Lora's policies.
Let me know if this is enough! If it's not, then it might just be time to give up the article. Thank you for all your help!!! LMPAJ (talk) 18:57, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
