Tyla is the self-titled debut studio album by South African singer Tyla. It was released on 22 March 2024 through Fax and Epic Records.[1][2] "Water" was released as the lead single from the album on 28 July 2023. Follow-up singles "On and On", "Truth or Dare" and the promotional single "Butterflies" were released together on 1 December 2023. "Art" was released as the fourth single alongside the full album on the day of the album's release.[3][4][5][6][7]

Tyla features guest appearances from Kelvin Momo, Tems, Gunna, Skillibeng, Becky G, and Travis Scott.[8] The album was to be promoted through Tyla's debut concert tour, however, it was cancelled due to an injury that Tyla suffered prior to the tour's commencement.[9][10]

Background

When speaking on the album's sound, Tyla described it as an "experimental album", appearing to be inclusive of genre styles such as amapiano as well as possibly fusing Western pop, hip hop and R&B.[9] She told Capital Xtra in October 2023 that she had been recording the album for over two years and that it would be primarily be "popiano", a blend of the amapiano and pop genres.[11] Part of the album was recorded as well as filmed in Portland, Jamaica.[12]

Release

On 4 November 2022, Tyla released "To Last" as a standalone single.[13] On 28 July 2023, "Water" was released as the album's lead single.[14] The song won Best African Music Performance at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards.[9] Remix versions of the song featuring American rapper Travis Scott and DJ Marshmello were both released on 17 November 2023.[15] On 30 November 2023, she released the album's cover art, alongside 3 songs from the album: "Truth or Dare", "Butterflies", and "On and On". "Truth or Dare" was sent to rhythmic contemporary radio on 13 February 2024 as the album's third single.[1][16] On 2 December 2023, she released a ColorsxStudios version of "On and On".[17] On 5 December 2023, she announced the Tyla Tour in support of the album, originally set to begin on 21 March 2024 in Oslo and conclude on 28 May 2024 in the Minneapolis.[18][19]"Art" was released as the final single from the album in March 2024 along with the album's release.
