I've just done an edit to the RuneQuest article. I'd like to see the article get a good status at some point (though it's far from ready). ZedZed77 (talk) 22:27, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

For more specific discussions, see:

I've tagged this page within your project, and I just wanted to draw your WP's attention to it. I've been outside of the online-RP community for a while, so I wanted to get some of your opinions on whether or not this is notable. Cheers! CaveatLector Talk Contrib 03:57, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think the article is important and notable but also very poorly named. I don't think it's within the scope of this project because it deals with a form of gaming that is beyond the current scope of this project. Vampyrecat (talk) 22:51, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Milestone Announcements

Announcements
 • All WikiProjects are invited to have their "milestone-reached" announcements automatically placed onto Wikipedia's announcements page.
 • Milestones could include the number of FAs, GAs or articles covered by the project.
 • No work need be done by the project themselves; they just need to provide some details when they sign up. A bot will do all of the hard work.

I thought this WikiProject might be interested. Ping me with any specific queries or leave them on the page linked to above. Thanks! - Jarry1250 (t, c) 22:17, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. -Drilnoth (talk) 00:27, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Thanks. — Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 09:37, 15 March, 2009 (UTC)

Peer review of live action role-playing games

Hey folks. I've put live action role-playing game up for peer review here, and would really appreciate any input. The page has come a long way (especially in terms of referencing), and it's one of the few roleplaying game articles we have at "Good Article" status. Given that it's a "Top" importance roleplay page it'd be great to get it to featured. Please chip in with your thoughts at the review. Ryan Paddy (talk) 00:43, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Some input on All Flesh Must Be Eaten please

Hi everyone. I would like to help with the All Flesh Must Be Eaten page. I've made a table on User:ZombieCow/AFMBE for the (released) books. However, I could use some input/advice:

 • I removed the descriptions of the books (see next point). Some of the links pointed to a pyramid review, and those need registrations.
 • Maybe I should put a description distilled from the official site (example: [1])? That site can be accessed by everyone. I've already done this for the zombie master screen. (Need to make it into a clean ref, will do that before I put it on the page)
 • Any other ideas?

Hi! The Dungeons & Dragons portal is currently a featured portal candidate here. Since D&D is a role-playing game, I was wondering if the members of this project could take a look and comment on the nomination. Thanks! –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 14:53, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

GM Magazine

I've discovered that I still have most of my copies of GM, which was an independent UK RPG magazine active between 1988 and 1990. I have made a list of my issues at the video games wikiproject. Currently I have only noted their CRPG reviews, but if you want a source for a RPG system, module, PBM or LARP published in this time period, let me know. The video games wikiproject links to a magazine archive on their front page, perhaps you'd like to do something similar. Marasmusine (talk) 11:12, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Realms of Wonder (LARP)

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Realms of Wonder (LARP), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

unremarkable product

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached.

Thought I'd better let some experts know before it gets deleted. Original author appears to have vanished. OrangeDog (talkedits) 03:12, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Paranoia resources and cleanup

I'm in the process of adding a whole bunch of data and improvements to Paranoia. In trying to add more citeable/cited sources, I'm looking for (digital) copies of one or more of these magazines, namely the reviews of 1st edition printed in them, all from 1985:

 • Different Worlds #39
 • Space Gamer V1, #72
 • White Dwarf #65

Also redoing the book list, anyone who can fill in holes I left in the tables please do. Would be great if this effort pushes the article from B to A or GA. EllePollack (talk) 04:15, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Layout?

From the perspective of someone who just found WikiProject Role-playing games, the layout of this page is a bit odd. While I agree that the participants and sympathizers of this project deserves all the credit they can get, it strikes me as odd that you have to scroll through a looo-oooong list of online names before you find the Goals of the project... OlderNick (talk) 10:22, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree it makes it a bit clunky to browse the page. I changed the "sympathizers" section to be in columnar format, so it doesn't take up so much vertical space. I'm not sure what to do about the actual participants section... Haqui11a (talk) 13:34, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Definitively an improvement. What about simply putting participants and sympathizers at the bottom of the page? It shouldn't offend anyone on the list, should it? OlderNick (talk) 10:36, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That would certainly make more sense to me. It would give "Goals" higher visibility, and it seems like that should be more of a focal point. Haqui11a (talk) 12:21, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I took the liberty and moved us down a peg or two. I guess some someone with a few more skills could fix it up a bit, if it's needed. OlderNick (talk) 19:42, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Added a new RPG page

Hi, I created my first article at Nexus: The Infinite City. I've put in a few things already, but I don't know how to do a few things (like references). Aufheben (talk) 11:19, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not knowing if I've done my own references correctly, this is what mine looks like:
 • Hite, K. (2008). Trail of Cthulhu. Pelgrane Press. ISBN 978-1934859070.
If you edit this page, you can copy/paste the above line and then change whatever needs changing to make it fit the Nexus page. You should be able to find the isbn at amazon.OlderNick (talk) 19:28, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That being said, I've added Trail of Cthulhu and GUMSHOE System to Wikipedia. Being my own debuts, I wouldn't mind some feedback. OlderNick (talk) 19:28, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. Can some people take a jaunt over to the Talk:Shadowrun page and let us know what you think about an external link. Basic story, the S-Run community site was removed in an EL purge some time ago when the site was gone. Now it has returned in a new guise and the people running the site want to add the external link back into the Shadowrun page. This was removed by several editors from the article as non-notable fansite and conflict of interest spamming. However now many people from the site have come over and are making arguments as to why it should be included. Myself and another couple of editors can't see how it meets the standards of the external links as it offers no encyclopaedic content in addition to the article, however it's getting out of hand with editors coming from S-Run itself. Long story short, can we get some more neutral eyes on the topic to see if some decision can be reached on this one. Don't mind the final outcome, but this single discussion now takes up the majority of the page and it getting nowhere. Canterbury Tail talk 12:00, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Role-playing" or "roleplaying"?

This has always been a question of mine about Wikipedia. Why do we use "role-playing" instead of "roleplaying"? "Role-playing" is, I think, and older term which is almost always shortened now to not use the hyphen. The most notable example being, of course, Dungeons & Dragons; the cover of it's 4th edition Player's Handbook says "Roleplaying Game Core Rules". However, this is not the only location; other than that, I see that most modern RPGs use "roleplaying" or a different term altogether (like the World of Darkness "storyteller" system). Why does Wikipedia still use the hyphen? –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 02:51, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was reading about hyphens the other month. The US, and maybe all English speaking countries, were moving towards not using the hyphen in stuff that's common. It isn't incorrect either way, though. I guess I would prefer no hyphen, but I don't care a ton. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 02:58, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(after ec) :Roleplaying (although it is inconsistent in the body text) and wikt:roleplaying would seem to be steps in the right direction. This has come up before too:
but, like "to-morrow" and "e-mail" and many word in between, I suspect that the hyphenated form of this one will continue towards disuse. -- JHunterJ (talk) 03:01, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That being the case, Google the word. "Role-playing" returns 77 million hits, "Roleplaying" returns 4 million.  RGTraynor  03:55, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Google results are no good at telling the future of word usage (that being the case I made). Google results are also suspect here, since googling role-playing does not just match the hyphenated version, but also "role playing" and "roleplaying" -- googling this, for instance
 • +"role-playing" -roleplaying -"role playing"
But Google isn't part of the "how to name articles" process, AFAIK. Either way, it would be nice if the article roleplaying was consistent with itself, even if it's not consistent across Wikipedia. -- JHunterJ (talk) 11:34, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good question. This comes up fairly often, as JHunterJ points out. It'd be an awful lot of work to change at this point - I'm not sure even WP:RM and WP:CFD are sufficient, it'd probably take a bot. Percy Snoodle (talk) 09:58, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Error with Taskforce

Due to the confusing nature of the final step of the instructions for setting up Wikiprojects I've mistakenly proposed a Taskforce for Kenzer & Company products as a full Wikiproject, when I meant to propose it as a Taskforce of this project. Paul Jaquays DYK front page hook

Almost there with regards to getting that front-page DYK for the project but slight stumbling block on the nomination - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:Did_you_know#Paul_Jaquays - in that the DYK validator doesn't "see anything about role-playing there" (point 1) when every reference is RPG related. Expert input on that specific point to confirm that there is would be appreciated! Thanks, David. Harami2000 (talk) 16:56, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. OK to go now, thanks, so long as there's a DYK slot in sufficient time. :) Harami2000 (talk) 23:12, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed changes to naming/content of Role-Playing Game and Tabletop Role-Playing Game

The article Role-playing game currently describes tabletop role-playing games, with other forms such as video RPGs and LARP described as varieties of tabletop game. This does not meet the WP:NAME policy, which requires the content of an article to unambigiously match the name and meet visitor expectations. Many users are surprised to find that Role-playing game specifically describes tabletop roleplaying, as can be seen from the recurring comments to this effect on the talk page

Please see my proposal at Talk:Role-playing game to change Role-playing game to describe roleplaying as a class of activity with varieties that include tabletop RPGs, video RPGs and LARP as varieties of that class of activity, and to create a new Tabletop role-playing game article to specifically describe the tabletop RPG variety. This naming structure will remove the current ambiguity that exists in regards to the role-playing game article, so that the new articles will be more likely to meet the expectations of visitors based on the names of the articles.

Please make your opinion heard either way on at Talk:Role-playing game so we can put this long-running point of contention to rest. Ryan Paddy (talk) 23:03, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This discussion has resulted in the article role-playing game being split. The content relating to tabletop RPGs has been used to create a new article on that form of RPG at role-playing game (pen and paper). The article role-playing game now summarises the articles describing the various forms of RPG from tabletop to larp to digital. Other articles may need to be updated to reflect the new structure. Ryan Paddy (talk) 21:46, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Roleplay simulations + Project scope/name?

In conjunction with the above reworking of the base Role-playing game article, I've added a note that Roleplay simulations (as a /whole/ class) are currently outwith this project scope. This would appear to be the case at present, but needed mentioning one way or another for now as those were not referred to previously and can be discussed and/or clarified later as required. (I've also highlighted the existing text stating that Computer RPGs are a separate WP project -- and not sure, now, if /this/ project's own name is "representative" now that the base RPG article is being rescoped). Regards, David. Harami2000 (talk) 08:36, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

One further query as to whether anything with reference to D&D should be automatically /excluded/ from this project as appears to be the case for some of the GAs previously. The likes of Dragonlance has hooks into the wider RPG domain beyond D&D - and even more so in terms of impact in change of RPG culture - so it was "easy" to add that back in on this project's scope, but I'm not at all sure at the /apparent/ "exclude D&D" remit; e.g. The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. Thoughts, please, since that's not made explicit either in the intro ("better organize information in articles related to role-playing games") or the scope section, following. Harami2000 (talk) 08:48, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's a matter of excluding everything D&D from this wikiproject, as it is keeping out items which are just D&D related which have little or no impact on the rest of the RPG industry, such as Lost Caverns. Dragonlance is possible to consider for inclusion, because its impact on the industry is greater than most D&D subjects. Some subjects, such as Gary Gygax, are clearly important to RPGs beyond D&D, and thus already have the RPG Wikiproject banner. BOZ (talk) 12:46, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request for comment on Biographies of living people

Hello Wikiproject! Currently there is a discussion which will decide whether wikipedia will delete 49,000 articles about a living person without references, here:

Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people

Since biographies of living people covers so many topics, nearly all wikiproject topics will be effected.

The two opposing positions which have the most support is:

 1. supports the deletion of unreferenced articles about a living person, User:Jehochman
 2. opposes the deletion of unreferenced articles about a living person, except in limited circumstances, User:Collect

Comments are welcome. Keep in mind that by default, editor's comments are hidden. Simply press edit next to the section to add your comment.

Please keep in mind that at this point, it seems that editors support deleting unreferenced article if they are not sourced, so your project may want to pursue the projects below.

Unreferenced living people articles bot

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Role-playing games/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you.

Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Role-playing games/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.

New Goals 2010 proposal

I would like to propose some additional goals for this project.

1. Game Conventions- I would like to help create and edit RPG convention articles. There should also be a project template for game conventions. I would like to work on the template.
2. Artists- Currently the list of artists has a lot of redlinks.
A) Notability Standards for RPG Artists When creating biographies of living persons, we always run into the notability problem. I propose that we discuss guidelines for notability of RPG artists. I propose that the definition of notable RPG artist includes: artists with published cover art, artists whose art has been used in other media (e.g. both RPGs and video games or CCGs), artists who have won awards, artists whose art has appeared in any published work for which there is a wikipedia article. Please note that "published" is a broad definition that goes beyond traditional bound books and print journals.
B) Template for RPG Artists- There should be a project template.

Thank you for considering this proposal. Vampyrecat (talk) 17:21, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There's a long discussion on the talk page there to rename the article, because it covers only video games. Editors who work in that industry are opposed. Pcap ping 00:23, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Basic Fantasy up for Deletion

2 Have a look please.

Would AdventureQuest and DragonFable be covered by this project? While they are credited as 'Massively Singleplayer Online Role-Playing Games' the scope of this project seems to be more about tabletop games and such, rather than the kind they are. I noticed that the DF article was tagged with 'Role-playing game stubs' so I thought I should ask. If you don't cover it, should I replace the stub template with the normal stub? Role-playing game articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Role-playing game articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Sunday, November 14th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of November, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

If you have already provided feedback, we deeply appreciate it. For the Wikipedia 1.0 editorial team, SelectionBot 16:36, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject cleanup listing

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 20:49, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Clean up needed

This whole project needs a serious clean up. Just a casual glance at the importance scale of the articles is a joke. There were multiple character classes from a single vampire based game set as high articles, while a game as important as Runequest was mid and Chivalry and Sorcery and Space Opera were low. Vanity projects and games designers of vague heritage are set as high importance, while articles such as 'dice' is a mid importance article. Please be brave and change articles which need changing. FruitMonkey (talk) 03:01, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just because one editor disagrees with the importance rating doesn't indicate a "joke". The ratings are decided by consensus, and it just so happens that more WP:RPG editors play (or played) World of Darkness than they do Chivalry and Sorcery. -- RoninBK T C 05:18, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Merge help needed big time

And maybe a couple others. Please comment on these at Talk:Dark Ages (World of Darkness). D O N D E groovily Talk to me 05:44, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New article for a LARP convention

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wyrd_Con It is posted for speedy deletion, but I only created the page so that I could add the convention to see also section of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_action_role-playing_game please advise me how to proceed or if I should just let it get deleted. Has Wyrd Con been covered in any media articles? If so, then add a link to the news article to the Wyrd Con page and the deletion request may go away. If not, then Wyrd Con probably isn't notable, and nothing you do will stop it getting deleted (you can only delay the inevitable). To have an article on Wikipedia, a subject needs to have been discussed in some depth in reliable sources such as journalistic or scholarly articles or books. You need those sources so that users can verify what the article says about the subject for themselves. Ryan Paddy (talk) 02:21, 21 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nice work finding some references. Ryan Paddy (talk) 00:40, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Damage over time, at Health (gaming)

There is a discussion on Talk:Health (gaming) about 'damage over time' - the term, well-known in WoW and Everquest, is a redirect to that article, but there is no mention of the concept there. Could someone address this please? I think it would be a useful addition to the article. Elizium23 (talk) 19:29, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

J Hunter Johnson

browsing through the pages in your project found this J. Hunter Johnson there are several issues with the page I wanted to see if he was known to RPG or whether Afd is warranted.Tetron76 (talk) 22:18, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Biography criteria

I don't know how active this project is, but i would suggest that you draw up some inclusion criteria for which you feel would make someone worthy of having an article. While this may be still overturned by other criteria it would make life easier as I see multiple articles have been AfD simultaneously.Tetron76 (talk) 16:03, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

RuneQuest

I've just done an edit to the RuneQuest article. I'd like to see the article get a good status at some point (though it's far from ready). ZedZed77 (talk) 22:27, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
