The SRM University (Sri Ramaswamy Memorial University) is a co-educational private university in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It was founded in 1985 as SRM Engineering college in Kattankulathur, under Anna University [citation needed]. The university now has four campuses in Tamil Nadu Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, Vadapalani and Tiruchirapalli), and in Modinagar, near Delhi. The institute gained deemed status during the 2003-2004 academic year, and was renamed SRM Institute of Science and Technology. It became SRM University in 2006, when it attained the status of a full-fledged university, under section 3 of the UGC Act 1956.[1]

Campuses

Kattankulathur Campus, Chennai

Biotech Block

The university has two campus sections, the Main and the Annex Campus, that cover 38 blocks and are spread over 300 acres (1.2 km2).

The Indian Bank, City Union Bank, the SRM Hotel that includes swimming pool and bar facilities, and the Royal Inn Restaurant are all located on the campus. The various blocks within SRMIST include: SRM General Hospital, SRM Medical College, SRM Kattankulathur Dental College, SRM Arts & Science College, SRM Polytechnic College, Valliammai Engineering College, Valliammai Polythenic College, the PG Block, the Hi-Tech Block, the Main Block, the Mechanical Block, the Mech PG Block, the Electrical Sciences Block, the Computer Science Block, the Biotech block, IT Park (15 floors), an Auditorium (4,500-seat capacity), MBA block, as well as the University Block (16 floors) that houses the Central Library (4 floors) with an Internet Cafe and a Cafeteria. There are also about half a dozen hostels. Work is going on on the construction of a A multipurpose indoor stadium with an an estimated cost of Rs.17.6 crore has been proposed and the ground work was started in 2011 by Shri Abhinav Bindra when SRM University offered him a Doctorate degree.

Ramapuram Campus, Chennai

The dental college currently occupies this campus. This complex consists of five academic blocks spread over 25 acres (100,000 m2). This enclave provides the facilities and infrastructure necessary for medical and health sciences students to pursue their programs. The campus also houses the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, as well as the Easwari Engineering College.

Vadapalani Campus, Chennai

Considered the smallest of the SRM campuses and is located in the center of Chennai city. This campus houses the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of MCA, and the Sivaji Ganesan Film Institute.

Modinagar Campus, Uttar Pradesh

SRM Modinagar

The campus is spread over a green lawn environment at Modinagar on Delhi-Merrut highway. The academic building accommodates various teaching activities, as well as personality development and communication skills.

Irungalur Campus, Trichy

SRM established a medical College on the outskirts of Trichy in 2008. It is located in Irungalaur, Manachanallur Taluk on the Trichy-Chennai highway at a distance of 28 km from Tiruchirappalli. Anna University afflicted T.R.P Engineering College is in the same campus started in 2010.

Central and departmental libraries

  • Extensive collection of academic volumes and titles
  • Popular periodicals
  • National and international journals
  • Supplementary digital resources (CD-ROMs and audio cassette equivalent)

Education

Top-ranking students are given the opportunity to spend a semester in foreign institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), Carnegie Mellon University (USA), University of California - Davis (USA), University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (USA), SUNY - Buffalo (USA), Northeastern University (USA), Massachusetts Institute of Medicine - Josh Laboratory (USA), University of Western Australia (Australia), Birmingham City University (UK), Kyushu Institute of Technology (Japan), Lille Catholic University (France), Technical University Chemnitz (Germany), Umea University (Sweden).[2][3] Around 104 students were selected for this Semester Abroad Program (SAP) in 2008.[4][5] A few were offered scholarships while most of the students were supported by their family, during their time abroad.

SRM University has a special arrangement with the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (USA) to transfer students at the end of the 3rd year for a comprehensive two-year BS + MS program at University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. SRM also has a dual degree program with the University of Warwick (UK) in the area of Plant Biotechnology. A similar program is being worked out in co-operation with Dundee University (UK).[6]

SRMSAT

On 12 October 2011 the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced successful launch of SRMSAT,[7] a nanosatellite designed and created by a group of 50 students from the SRM University under the guidance of ISRO scientists.[8] The satellite weighs just 10.4 kilograms (23 lb) and was created at a cost of 1.5 crore (US$180,000) to monitor trace gases from space.[8]

The Camber Racing team was formulated in September of 2009 to compete in on-track student events organized by SAE India and Formula SAE. SAE or the ‘Society of Automotive Engineers’ is the world governing body on automotive and related fields. With the passion and commitment, the students work as a team to design, build, test and compete an open-wheeled formula style race car. Since the teams formation, three such cars have been developed i.e. CR800, LJM01, The Beast. Keeping in mind the future competitions the team has already started their work on the next car "B13".

SUPRA SAEINDIA competition is organised by SAE INDIA and is the largest student engineering competition in India. The concept behind the competition is that a fictional manufacturing company has contacted a design team to develop a small Formula style race car. The prototype is to be evaluated for its potential as a racing car. The target marketing group for the race car is the nonprofessional weekend autocross racer. Each team designs and produces a prototype based on well laid down rules & regulations. The competition comprises seven events: Cost and Manufacturing Analysis, Presentation, Design, Acceleration, Skid Pad, Autocross, and Endurance.

The Formula SAE competition is organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers and is held in UK, USA, Germany, Italy, Austria, Australia, Spain, Brasil.

In 2011, in SUPRA SAEINDIA competition, the team was ranked 2nd in Marketing Presentation and finished in 24th out of 40 team participating in the competition.

In 2012, in SUPRA SAEINDIA competition, the team was awarded the overall 1st prize out of 65 teams and along with other awards such as 2nd in Endurance event, 2nd in Autocross event and 2nd in Skid-pad event.

Each year a new car is made from scratch and is an improvement than the previous one. Teamwork, leadership and marketing are the few skills the students learn apart from getting their theoretical knowledge into practice through the design process. The team members and the sponsors get equal opportunity to connect with each other and develop a strong network.

Examination system

The academic year is divided into two semesters. Each semester has three internal exams and one final exam (semester exam) for all theory subjects. Laboratory courses usually have one internal exam followed by the final exam. Most of the exams are theoretical, similar to other engineering colleges in India.

University status

The university is approved by the University Grants Commission and is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).[9] It has been given an overall grade of A+ by NAAC.[citation needed]

The Civil Engineering,Electrical and Electronics Engineering(EEE), Information Technology Engineering(IT), Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE), and Mechanical Engineering of the Kattankulathur Campus is accredited by ABET.[10]
