The Gulf Medical University (formerly Gulf Medical College), established in 1998, have been involved in Undergraduate & Postgraduate Education in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy for the last decade. The institution became a University in the year 2008 following a Decree by His Highness Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, United Arab Emirates.

Gulf Medical University is the first medical school in the region to offer admission to both males and females of all nationalities.

Mr. Thumbay Moideen is the founder president.

History and Affiliations

Gulf Medical University (GMU) is located in the smallest of the seven emirates, Ajman, on the western coast of the UAE. GMU was originally founded in 1998 as Gulf Medical College (GMC) by the Thumbay Group, and offered certified courses in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Physiotherapy. The college was opened under Decree Number 1, issued on 28th January 2008, by His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al-Nuaimi, the Ruler of Ajman and Member of the Supreme Council, UAE^[1].

In 2008, the UAE’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research approved the college’s elevation to university status GMC (now GMU) was the first medical college in the UAE to offer entrance to both males and females of any nationality. As a centre of excellence with core strengths in Medical Education, Healthcare, and Research, GMU has since expanded to offer several undergraduate and postgraduate courses to a diverse student body.

GMC Hospital and Research Centre (GMCH & RC)

GMU’s affiliated teaching hospital, GMC Hospital, is also located in Ajman. The hospital opened in October 2002, as the first teaching hospital in the private sector in the UAE. With a history spanning a decade of delivering premium healthcare, the hospital houses a number of general and specialty departments and five operating theatres. Students of GMU can also gain access to student support services, common and study rooms, and a library within the teaching hospital^[2].

GMC Hospital’s slogan, ‘Healing through knowledge and wisdom’, reflects its ties with GMU.

Location and Student Life

GMU is located in the Al Jarf district of Ajman. Ajman is the smallest of the UAE’s seven emirates, bordered by Sharjah and in close proximity to Dubai^[3]. GMU’s campus covers a 100,000 sq.m area, and houses teaching rooms, clinical laboratories, a simulation centre, and an information and learning centre, where students can gain access to a comprehensive library and e-resource database.

Students can also enjoy a health club, coffee shop, and international restaurant on campus. The GMU Student Council is elected each year, with representatives from each study programme and every year group. The Council are active in facilitating student activities and events.

Departments

College of Medicine

The College of Medicine offers a 5 year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme. The programme is approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research,UAE^[4]; is listed in the World Health Organisation’s Avicenna directory^[5]; and with the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research^[6]. A year’s rotating residential internship follows the successful completion of the programme^[7].

Students undertaking the MBBS programme also have the opportunity to participate in GMU’s Summer Training Programme^[8]. This sees students gain practical training in hospitals around the globe, including the UK, USA, Malaysia, Singapore, Germany, Tunisia and Sweden.

The Summer Training Programme aims to increase students’ clinical knowledge of region-specific common and rare clinical cases.

College of Dentistry

GMU’s College of Dentistry offers a 5 year Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) programme. One of the aims of the programme is to encourage students to become active participants in improving oral health care and awareness in the UAE^[9]. Students are encouraged to participate in local and international scientific meetings.

College of Pharmacy

The College of Pharmacy offers a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programme over 4 and a half years, plus 1 year of Advanced Pharmacy Practices Experiences (APPE)^[10]. The approach to learning offers students a combination of theory and practice in physical clinical settings. Clinical simulations allow students to develop a patient-focused approach.

College of Allied Health Sciences

The College of Allied Health Sciences offers a 3 and a half year Bachelor of Physical Therapy (BPT)^[11], followed by a 6 month rotating internship. Students become familiar with health promotion; disease and disability prevention; and develop positive attitudes to the care of individuals and the wider population.

College of Graduate Studies

The College of Graduate Studies offers graduates of accredited medical schools, both in and outside the UAE, 6 postgraduate courses^[12]. The courses are designed to enhance students’ specialist expertise, preparing them for possible PhD study, and to offer working professionals the chance to specialise their field of knowledge. Students enrolled on postgraduate programmes also have the opportunity to participate in the Summer Training Programme.

Masters in Public Health (MPH)
Masters in Human Reproductive Biology (MS HRB); the first of its kind in the UAE^[13].

Centre for Continuing Education and Community Outreach

GMU’s Centre for Continuing Education and Community Outreach aims to provide physicians and other health professionals with the opportunity of continuing professional development. The centre offers a series of certificate courses over 10-month or short-term study periods^[14].

GMU offers seven 10-month certificate courses: Dental Assistant; Medical Assistant-Laboratory; Medical Assistant-Administration; Nurse Assistant; Medical Assistant-Clinical; Physical Therapy Assistant; and Pharmacy Assistant.

The short-term certificate courses include: Clinical Nutrition; Dental Office Management; Geriatrics Health Care; and Basic Surgical Skills. The centre also offers weekend workshops on Basic Surgical Skills and Fundamentals of EKG.

Online Programmes

GMU also offers online certificate programmes in Health Insurance Accountancy and Medical Tourism Mediator^[15].

Research

GMU launched its own online journal in 2012 and has contributed research articles to a wealth of international medical journals^[16] such as: Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention; Journal of Surgery Pakistan (International); International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research; and the International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences.

Activities and Associations

GMU publishes a bi-monthly magazine, GMC Health Journal, launched in 1999^[17]. The magazine covers an array of general health and medical topics in English and Arabic, with contributions from international institutions.

GMU is active in participating in national and international events. In March 2013, GMU hosted the UAE’s biggest Inter-Collegiate Sports Festival^[18] and the National Conference on Contemporary Dimensions of the Pharmacy Profession^[19]. In April 2013, GMU hosted the 5th Annual Dental Conference on Excellence in Oral and Dental Health^[20].
