:Hi {{Ping|I dream of horses}}. The future of the Co-op is in flux right now. The bot is matching some (but for unknown reasons, not all) people who create profiles with mentors. Unfortunately it appears that some of those mentors haven't been following up with their matches. So for now, I've turned off the functionality that invites new editors to the Co-op. However, there are quite a few people who have joined the Co-op recently, but either didn't receive a match or their match never contacted them. If you'd like to mentor one of these 'orphans', I'd suggest looking at [https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?namespace=4&associated=1&tagfilter=&target=Category%3ACo-op+learner&days=30&limit=100&title=Special%3ARecentChangesLinked this feed] to find all recently-joined learners, and [https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?limit=50&tagfilter=&title=Special%3AContributions&contribs=user&target=HostBot&namespace=5&tagfilter=&year=2015&month=-1 this feed] to find joiners who received a match, but who may not have been contacted yet by a mentor. Thanks for the invitation!
Thank you for the invitation. I will definitely check it out. Just a comment/quick post related to some of the other posts I see above.
I felt a bit frustrated as well at first. I contributed, after signing up, wanting to share something I thought interesting, related to a topic/person. The bit that frustrated me most is that the other Users were so quick to revert. The first revert, I totally understood, and knew why... copy paste Copyright. A NO NO!
The Second, I believe was due to an external link where I didn't post the ref at the bottom. I edited my first post, which was now in my words now with refs (just missing the one for that external link). Right after I saved it, I edited to add the ref, but it was already reverted.
However, the user was very cool. I posted on his talk page and asked what was wrong now, and also what was the correct way to ask someone who reverted. He wrote back, that he saw the added ref, reversed his revert, and explained that the Talk link is the correct communication method for that.
Another, one that bothered me a bit, mostly because I just dealt with those 2, was that I viewed a wiki page from a wiki link within my post. I saw the other page didn't link the persons name to the person that the article was about's wiki page... so all I did was add [[]] around the name on that page, to link to the person's wiki page... Someone reverted it??? WHY??? WHO KNOWS? I DON'T CARE... unless there is a valid rule for it.
My point being, I can identify with the frustrations of some of the negative comments on here... however Copyright, first of all, and going by the rules is crucial.
Here is a good place to start for any question/problem... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_help_forums. People who know that info in and out, are going to make sure we abide by them. So, don't give up. I didn't and my main contribution is there, up and staying. It just took a little frustration and most importantly education by a couple of members to get there. Now I know, be thorough, use your own words, add a ref for every outside statement, link, picture, piece of info you used... and make sure you have a reference for your info. DON'T GIVE UP! Speedy deletion nomination of User talk:Jitendrabanna
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on User talk:Jitendrabanna, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. For creating a bot inviting me to the Teahouse 9 months ago! I was about to leave after 5 minutes of joining when Hostbot invited me to the Teahouse! But most of all, having a cool userpage. I clicked on (talk) which lead me to your talk page, then I pressed the user page tab and saw the most amazing thing ever... a userbox! Anyways, long story short, without the bot inviting me, I wouldn't be typing this right now. Cheers, ΤheQ Editor Talk? 22:12, 19 November 2014 (UTC) |
Article Baye McNeil proposed for deletion (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Baye McNeil)
Hello Jtmorgan,
FYI, a page you edited, Baye McNeil, has been proposed for deletion by user Nagoyabllue, and I thought you might want to participate in the debate: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Baye McNeil. I created the Baye McNeil page, going through Wikipedia articles for creation to do so - whereupon it was approved for publication by an editor. All of the references (including the cover blurbs) were looked at and considered notable enough for the article…I look forward to your thoughts on the proposed deletion…Hoping you're well...Thank you!...Minusminority (talk) 21:01, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
Teahouse invitations to indef-blocked editors
...such as this don't seem very useful - could HostBot check the block status of an account before posting an invitation? JohnCD (talk) 17:03, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
- HostBot does check the block status. Sometimes the block table isn't up to date. Mistakes are rare, but ultimately unavoidable. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 18:02, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

no thx I just got here and I am inexperienced.
Thank you for the invitation.
I am trying to edit the company page where I work, and I know that it currently reads like an advertisment. I would like to build upon what is already there, but I also need to see what is on the page before I modify or delete it. Would you suggest starting over, or editing the existing page? Thank you for your assistance, Siddeeqah2014
Thank you for being so welcoming
Dear Hostbot I definitely need your help. I am trying to edit a page Amanda Eliasch and there are some people who are very negative and it is about to be deleted when it is properly researched with articles from the Times, The Mail, Huffington Post etc. Good articles. I am trying to make it less flashy and so it falls into the limits that Wikipedia enjoys. If you can help me with hiding URLS, I would love it. I am very good once shown but not so great following instructions. I will do my best. Thank you for any ideas and your assistance. Thank you also for the welcome to The teahouse. AERATBAG

Teahoust Host Landing...
Hey J-Mo, what would it take to get HostBot moving people back and forth from the host landing to the break room again? I ask because I was just there to revert an edit of 12K worth of text characters for an image and noticed there are currently at 202 hosts on that page. This concerns me, because it won't be long before the page stops rendering and I'm honestly kind of surprised the page hasn't hit the transclusion size limit yet (it's at about 23.8% of the limit currently). Thanks. — {{U|Technical 13}} (e • t • c) 03:33, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hi T13. I was never able to make the host moving workflow work properly. There was an intermittent bug that resulted in some (many?) profiles being deleted completely, to everyone's great consternation. Never did completely nail it down. So best to manually archive inactive profiles every once in a while, as long as we aren't overzealous about it. If it would help, I can dump you a list of all hosts with profiles, and their most recent TH edit date. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 01:34, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
- Which script is it again that does the moving? https://github.com/jtmorgan/hostbot/tree/master/scripts/teahouse/ ??? Maybe I can poke at it and figure out what is missing or not working as intended and submit a pull request now that I've taken a Java and C++ class and own a ISBN 0-596-00188-6 Python in a nutshell for Python 2.2. — {{U|Technical 13}} (e • t • c) 01:44, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
- I don't even have that code in the repo anymore--I was real frustrated at it. But basically to replicate that script in a way that (probably) fixes the problem, you would follow these basic steps (all via the API):
- pull the list of usernames for hosts who have profiles. You can use the section headers to get this info.
- check the recent contribs of those hosts, one by one, to see how many edits they have to Teahouse pages
- remove the profiles for hosts that don't have any recent Teahouse edits (I used to use a ~1 month threshold) from the page
- post those profiles onto the host breakroom.
- to move profiles of recently active hosts back, reverse these steps (more or less)
- I don't even have that code in the repo anymore--I was real frustrated at it. But basically to replicate that script in a way that (probably) fixes the problem, you would follow these basic steps (all via the API):
Using a framework like MWClient or Wikitools will make save you time interacting with the API and reduce the amount of code you have to write. Let me know if you have questions! Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 00:24, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Posted invite from "Teahouse host" who hasn't edited in two months?
See here [1] for the notice from Nathan2055, who hasn't edited since October 15th. How does this work? Did he kick off the bot invitation without actually editing, or is the bot issuing invitations in the name of inactive editors? Nathan T 03:35, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
- Good point, Nathan. The bot pulls from a list of about a dozen editors who, long ago, agreed to have their names attached to Teahouse invites. But I haven't updated the list in a while, except when people explicitly asked to be added or removed. So I'll check in the with current set, and also ask on the Teahouse talk page to see if any new folks want to be added. And I'll just remove Nathan2055 for now, and drop a note on his talk page for due diligence. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 01:31, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
- You can leave me on the list. I check the Teahouse often but someone else usually answers questions faster than I do. I was active earlier today and don't really mind the occasional annoying POV-pusher who wants me to support them. Take care and have a great 2015, DocTree (ʞlɐʇ·ʇuoɔ) WER 00:26, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Message of HostBot's invite to TeaHouse
After receiving an invite from HostBot, I got interested in how HostBot had chosen user I JethroBT from all TeaHouse hosts (and finding answer here), I got really interested in HostBot, and read through stack trace of sending an invite. During that I noticed, that HostBot chooses text of the invite randomly from two different strings. Those two texts convey kinda different messages to the receiver of invite. Wouldn't it be better to merge them, so that the receiver can get a better picture about TeaHouse when reading the invite? --andrybak (talk) 19:05, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Andrybak, yep for a while this year I was helping some researchers run a mini-experiment to see if serving up peer support appeals vs. expert support appeals led to different outcomes. But that research project kind of disintegrated, and I hadn't bothered to update the code. I've done so now: the bot will be back to a single generic message that mentions both veterans and newcomers tomorrow. Good eyes :) Also, welcome (back?) to enwiki! Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 01:44, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
- No, Special:Contributions/Rybak is not my account. However, accounts with same username on ruwiki, meta and wikidata were mine until I requested a username change to distinguish myself from de:User:Rybak and to be able to make a unified login. --andrybak (talk) 03:42, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Teahouse does not work
Sorry to bother you here.
I can't for the life of me post anything at the Teahouse. It doesn't work in either Firefox or Konqueror (Ubuntu). Half the message box disappears into the left side of the screen, both browsers slow down to a crawl and clicking the "ask my question" button doesn't seem to yield any results (Although I am uncertain as to what kind of results I should be expecting so I might have spammed the page by now. Sorry.)
Is it a known issue? Mind if I ask my question here?
Kingrevenant (talk) 10:48, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Kingrevenant. Sorry to hear the Q&A page isn't working for you. I've asked some other Teahouse volunteers to test it as well (it worked fine for me on Firefox for Mac). You're welcome to post your question here, or on the Teahouse talk page, where you are likely to get a faster and better response. Welcome to Wikipedia! HI! sent u an email
Hello JtMorgan!
I sent u an email, explaining about the Redfin article, and why I had included certain points. I apologize If i made any mistakes, and sorry about the inconvenience. Thank you! - supereditor92, 2/15/2015.
Hi, sorry to bother you again, but I sent u an email about a rough copy of my edited work. I wanted to run it by you first, before editing it directly. Thanks for your feedback, and based on your feedback, I did not include any redfin.com sources, only included verifiable information, did not add anything to the business model, and added a section about the company's history/founders. If you feel it's good to go, I could edit it directly. Thanks!
-supereditor92, 2/16/2015.
- Hi again Supereditor92. The stuff you sent me via email looks good to me—tho IMO there's still too much detail in the lede about Redfin's business model. I suggest you make the changes to the article, and we'll see what happens. I may come through and make a few updates here and there, but I'll stop deleting big chunks of content. If someone else comes by and makes big changes, we'll take that as it comes. Happy editing! - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 18:12, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
- Oh, btw: you 'sign' your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes, like this (~~~~), at the end of your message. That automatically adds your username and the date/time, so you don't have to do it manually. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 18:14, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
Hi!, I made the changes, and feel absolutely free to also make any changes that you want to. Thanks, once again for your feedback. Supereditor92 (talk) 19:39, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Criteria for HostBot invitation to the Teahouse
I wonder if the criteria for HostBot inviting a user to the Teahouse might be tweaked a little. I ask because I see invitations that seem incongruous. A new vandal's talk page often attracts a series of warning notices in a short period of time, and smiling along with them is an invitation to the Teahouse.
I'm not against welcoming reformed vandals to the Teahouse, or reaching out to the troubled with honey rather than vinegar, but during a contemporaneous campaign of vandalism, I think the invitation undermines the organic response from the community, and exposes the artificial response as risibly tone deaf and inappropriate.
I don't mean 'artificial' to be pejorative. I'd use it to refer to any artifice of human manufacture from the flint-shaped stone to robotic explorers of the solar system. They all need tweaking.
So, perhaps HostBot could check the talk page for indications of the user's reception by the Wikipedia community at the time an invitation is considered.
Just my two cents. I hope I haven't burned any bridges re the bouncers at the Teahouse. Cheers. Willondon (talk) 22:11, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Willondon. The bot actually does check talk pages before posting. See this function, which tells the bot to look for any of these strings, and not post if it finds any of them. It's a low-tech solution, I admit, and not always effective. But there probably won't ever be a true fix for this problem that will satisfy most vandal fighters because a) my general philosophy is always going to be to give people the benefit of the doubt; b) there's no hard and fast threshold for invitation, short of blocked/banned users, and I already exclude those as best I can. It's easy to code individual exclusion criteria, like having gotten a single level 4 warning, it's much harder to decide how many low level revert and deletion notices is "too many". And also more subjective. That said... if you can give me examples of incongruous invites, I'm happy to consider adding more criteria to the "skip" list to reduce false positives.
- Who's the bouncer at the Teahouse, by the way? This guy? I guess I wouldn't want to have ticked him off either. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 01:24, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the gratifying response paying attention to this issue. I'll refrain from criticizing further until I can offer some concrete solutions, as you have. The tweaking is in the devils, or something like that. Willondon (talk) 15:22, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

Welcome!
Would it be possible to add one of the standard welcome messages such as Template:WelcomeMenu to the teahouse invitation when it's creating a user's talk page. I've just come across an editor whose edits and new articles show promise but also a total lack of awareness of WP:V and WP:COI.
In this case it looks as though User:XLinkBot would have added a welcome if it had been first to the talk page but didn't because User:HostBot was there first, resulting in no welcome message at all - not what anybody was aiming for I'm sure, and not in tune with the spirit of teahouse. Regards, Bazj (talk) 12:27, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Bazj. The Teahouse invite is intended to serve as a welcome :) There are plenty of places on wiki where new users can find links to Important Things To Read. I don't believe that most newcomers ever read those documents when they're presented in a giant wall of text, as is the case in most of our welcome templates (design by committee FTW!!!). I certainly didn't, when I joined. I prefer to keep the Teahouse invitation simple, and to let people ask the questions they need answers to at the Teahouse itself, which is a pretty welcoming place. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 23:52, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
- What you intend to be a warm invitation to the teahouse, when I was new I'd have taken as a requirement that I go to a webpage, publicly articulate my ignorance and wait patiently for someone to grant me a response. That would have been my last day on any wiki.
- The newcomers may not read all the links in the welcome template. Like you I don't believe that they would. But I do believe that when they encounter an issue they'd be grateful for a guide into the myriad of wiki policies, a guide they could refer to instantly rather than waiting on the teahouse.
- I'm not requesting an either/or solution. I'm not requesting that the teahouse invitation be altered. I'd just like you to cater to a range of newcomers, those who want community and teahouse, and those who want to edit without fuss and don't mind RTFM. Is it not possible to leave a welcome template AND a teahouse invitation? Bazj (talk) 18:01, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- I think I understand that perspective. I would have no problem with User:XLinkBot adding the main welcome template after HostBot drops by, but I don't want my bot to be in charge of adding the main welcome template. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 18:54, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for April 11
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Priest Lake, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Dolly Varden and Kokanee (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Teahouse Invites
Hi, J-Mo. I noticed a Teahouse invite with User:Technical_13's signature in it when I visited a newcomers talk page. T13 was blocked/banned by ArbCom action yesterday after self-requesting his account be blocked. I removed T13's Teahouse host profile but I want to be sure that his missing profile won't hang up Hostbot. Weather update for Wiknic
Hi, weather update for Wiknic: the forecast is now for 91 degrees and a high UV index. Peaceray is bringing icewater, but everyone do please take appropriate precautions for the weather, such as sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and staying hydrated. There will be some shade in the trees. It's ok for those of us who are more temperature and/or sunlight sensitive to come but leave early, or skip the event if you think that you should; people who are very young, elderly, or have other health issues are more vulnerable to heat stroke. I have been informed by several "admin" that I will be unable to edit anything unless I become ... in their words....

Hostbot and indef blocked editors
Can HostBot not thank and invite indefinitely blocked editors? [3] --NeilN talk to me 17:28, 31 July 2015 (UTC)
- Hi NeilN. Thanks for the heads-up, and sorry for the delayed response. HostBot sometimes misfires and invites blocked editors (see 1, 2, 3. It's a matter of timing: sometimes, the block log table on the replica db that my script checks before inviting lags behind production. In other cases (like this one), someone is blocked in the narrow (usually 10-20 minute in the case a tad longer) window of time between when the block log is checked and the invite is delivered. In this case, the block log was checked at 17:01 UTC, two minutes before you blocked the editor :/ I can't easily fix the first scenario, but I can probably narrow the "window of uncertainty" somewhat with a bit of refactoring. I'll give that a go. Thanks again, sorry for the inconvenience, and please keep me posted if this happens again under your watch? Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 21:57, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. Appreciate it. --NeilN talk to me 22:42, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

Question about HostBot, of course
Does HostBot still match Co-op mentees to mentors? If so, how long does it usually take to be matched up to a mentee? --I dream of horses (talk to me) (contributions) @ 21:11, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
- Hi @I dream of horses:. If you'd like to mentor one of these 'orphans', I'd suggest looking at this feed to find all recently-joined learners, and this feed to find joiners who received a match, but who may not have been contacted yet by a mentor. Also keep an eye on the Co-op talkpage, as @I JethroBT: or I will be posting there soon with more information about next steps for the Co-op. Hope that helps, Jtmorgan (talk) 20:21, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
