Carlos Diehz
Carlos Diehz (born c. 1971) is a Mexican actor and architect, best known for his role as Cardinal Benítez in the 2024 film Conclave, directed by Edward Berger. The film, based on Robert Harris's 2016 novel Conclave, explores the political and spiritual complexities of electing a new Pope.[1][2]
Early life and career
[edit]Diehz was born in Mexico City and spent much of his early life interested in the arts, including drawing, painting, and singing. Despite an interest in acting during high school, he hesitated to pursue it due to shyness. He worked as an architect for over 30 years, relocating to Canada in 2009, where he settled in Vancouver.[3]
In 2020, after his children had grown and moved out, Diehz revisited his passion for acting. He enrolled in online workshops during the COVID-19 pandemic and trained under coaches like Waymon Boone and Jessica Houde.[4] Initially considering acting as a hobby, he committed to the craft seriously after advice from his instructors.[5]
Breakthrough with Conclave
[edit]Diehz's breakthrough role came in Conclave, a papal thriller by Edward Berger. The global casting search, led by Nina Gold, culminated in Diehz being cast as Cardinal Benitez after a series of auditions in 2022. The film, shot in Rome, featured a prestigious cast including Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci, and Isabella Rossellini.[6]
Diehz brought his life experience as an architect and immigrant to his performance, relating deeply to his character's values of humility and progressiveness. During production, he received mentorship from co-stars such as Fiennes and Lithgow, who offered advice on acting techniques and managing stage fright.[7]
Personal life
[edit]Diehz continues to work in architecture alongside his acting career. In interviews, he has expressed a desire to pursue more acting opportunities while drawing inspiration from his background and life experiences. Outside of work, he enjoys painting and karaoke, often singing songs from the 1980s.[8]
