Photo problem
Could someone please look at the image I attempted to add immediately under the subheading here:
Thomas Jefferson#Declaration of Independence
This happens very rarely but it's not the first time where the image shows up fine on preview and then not on the published version, which is the case here. Using a picture file form the Australian National Archive
Dear colleagues, I have no experience of this. I have found an image in the national Archive of the composer on whom I am writing an entry. Does anyone know how to get permission from the Archive for using such an image? The ID of the image is National Archives of Australia NAA 46135, K21/2/72/14. Can I have some leads please? - @Erictimewell: What's the license of the image? If the photo requires permission, you could ask the archive to review Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. GoingBatty (talk) 03:15, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
- Permission can be granted only by the owner of the copyright: the Archive is unlikely to be that owner. One possibility is that the image is old enough to be in the public domain: if so, you can upload it to Commons and use it freely. (You may find guidance at WP:NUSC, or you can ask about it at MCQ). Otherwise, you can get permission only if you can track down the copyright owner, which may be difficult.
- Another possibility, if this is for an article specifically about the composer, is to upload it as non-free content. You will need to make sure that your use meets all the terms in the non-free content criteria - one of these is that it may be used only in an article, not in a draft, so if you are using this route, you should wait until the article has been accepted into the encyclopaedia proper. How to add A-class icon to page?

- Hi IP 42.111.13.150. "India" is a very broad topic and there are lots of genres and articles related to India on Wikipedia. If you go to the top of this page and enter "Articles about India" into the search box, you'll find there are almost 200,000 articles that appear to be related to India in some way. So, what you could try to do is search for something more specific instead; for example, if you want to read about Indian politics, you can try searching "Indian politics" and see what comes up. You could also try asking about specific Indian-related topics at Wikipedia:WikiProject India and see if any of the members of that WikiProject can offer any suggestions. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:28, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Maplink template issue
Is it just me or are maplinks/mapframes not working currently? They display as a link saying "Map" to a page that doesn't exist or weird bits of code. - This issue of code being broken is appearing additionally in Demography articles (if I am assuming it is the same problem and I am not going mad here), take a look at Demography of Netherlands, Pakistan or even Britain, all seem to be broken with the come theme one being Template:Graph:Chart. Additionally Template:Image_frame is also broken as seen on Modern immigration to the United Kingdom, I have a feeling this is a site wide problem affecting many templates seemingly. Rolla Harger
On the Robert Frank Borkenstein listing. Rolla Neil Harger (January 14, 1890 – August 8, 1983) invented an early breathalyzer, called the Drunkometer, to test for driving under the influence in 1931; he was awarded the patent in 1936. He was biochemistry and pharmacology department chairman of the Indiana University School of Medicine from 1933 to 1956 and worked as a professor in the department of biochemistry and toxicology from 1922 to 1960. Harger was born on January 14, 1890, in Sherman Township, Decatur County, Nebraska. He used Nebraska on his World War I draft registration and Decatur County, Kansas on his World War II draft registration</ref> He graduated from Yale University in 1922. Harger was an assistant professor at Indiana University School of Medicine in the newly formed department of biochemistry and pharmacology. In 1931, he invented the Drunkometer to test for driving under the influence. - Now, regarding creating a page about the history of your business, the answer is, it depends. Does your business meet the criteria outlined on this page, and are there reliable sources that were created separate from your company's involvement that discuss your company at length? Adding a scanned image to a citation
I have several citations that I need to make on an article I've written, but the sources are not online. Tabular userbox layout
Hi all, I hope this is the right place to ask this. I'm trying to turn my userbox display, which by default is one userbox per row, into one that's organised in a grid layout compacting multiple userboxes into a neat box. What I'm going for is the style achieved at meta:User language#Usage near the bottom (you'll know it when you see it). How would I achieve this in the same way it's achieved on that page? I have it roughly done on my user page, but it doesn't conform to the page size and as such goes off the page past 100% zoom. Is there a simple way to do this? - That's better than five, but when zooming in they still go off of the page. The MetaWiki's method uses templatestyles which I attempted but was unable to do because it wasn't sanitised CSS. Category:Pages with disabled graphs

Short descriptions different from those at Wikidata
Hi there,
I had a question about using short descriptions different than the ones found at Wikidata. For a lot of them on certain articles, they aren't really informative (eg: on a given university/college article, it would only say "in X,Y,Z" rather than say "Arts school in X,Y,Z"). I haven't changed short descriptions on those articles given that it might mess things up, but I do think they can be way more informative than they are. My question is: if I change the short descriptions in the article itself, and not also at Wikidata, would that introduce problems? Please let me know. Thanks in advance! - No, there's no issues with doing that; part of the reason we have local short descriptions and don't just use the ones from Wikidata is to allow improving the short descriptions for our own needs. Galobtter (talk) 22:22, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Losipov, the descriptions at Wikidata have a different purpose than the short descriptions here. On Wikidata items are identified by number not by label. Many items can have very similar labels in English (or any other language), so the descriptions are used to tell the difference between items with similar labels. The problem is that more lengthy ones are needed sometimes in my opinion because it gives more information in a clearer way (just a heads up, I've been trying to add and change short descriptions in a way that is both brief and informative, like you stated. I just wanted to make sure they were alright). But I do understand, like I said. Thanks for the response!

By the way, now that I recall, some of the short descriptions that I've come across seem to be vandalism or at the very least disruptive (at least in Wikidata). - Hello, BENARJAN. When you say "please Add info about..." what you are really saying is "Would any of the thousands of volunteer editors like to spend some of their own time researching and writing an article about ...?" It's not impossible that somebody will do so, but your are not very likely to find somebody by asking here.
- There is a place to make this sort of request, requested articles; but in honesty, the take-up there is very low.
- A better place to ask might be WT:WikiProject Nepal, as people reading that already have some interest in Nepal.
- Alternatively, you could try writing an article yourself. This is challenging, especially for new editors, but it is possible: see your first article.
- Your first task would be finding sources that establish that he meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability: as a member of a provincial assembly, he almost certainly does; but you still need to find sources which are reliable, independent, and have significant coverage of him as an individual. I've only looked at the first three of your references, but none of them contain very much information about him (i.e. they lack "significant coverage"). ColinFine (talk) 09:06, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

- This is on your user page User:Kathy Borchers so it isn't an article. A user page shouldn't be used to create articles as the proper way to do this is through a draft, see your first article. I also suggest you take a look at Wikipedia:User pages#What may I have in my user pages?. Are these sources likely to make an article notable

I am writing a section about a suspected Viking-era fortification and have just got access to a bunch of newspaper articles about it and was planning to expand the section based on them. However, the section is already taking up a large part of the page and I was wondering about spinning it off into its own article. However, I am not sure it would be notable so I was wondering if someone could offer an opinion on that before I started drafting an independent page.
The main sources are:
- Morley, Claude; Cooper, Ernest R. (1924). "The Sea Port of Frostenden" (PDF). Proceedings of Suffolk Institute of Archaeology. XVIII (3): 167–179. - repeated in Cooper's two books and a newspaper article he wrote.
- "Ship burial in Suffolk: Another Sutton Hoo?: Excavation at Domesday port". East Anglian Daily Times. January 22, 1951. p. 5.
- "More Discoveries At Frostenden: Hope of Finding Saxon Ship Burial". Eastern Daily Press. 1951-02-01.
- An article in the Halesworth Times also about the excavation in 1951.
There is also a Lowestoft Press and Journal article from this time but I don't have access to it so I can't cite. There is also Raffield, Ben (2013). "Antiquarians, Archaeologists, and Viking Fortifications". Journal of the North Atlantic. 5 (20): 1–29. doi:10.3721/037.004.m602. ISSN 1935-1984. S2CID 163097688. but the discussion in that is possibly trivial and probably WP:INDISCRIMINATE.

- @El komodos drago Assuming this is about Frostenden, I don't think that a WP:SIZESPLIT is justified yet. Your sources may well make a split viable on grounds of notability, although I don't think that the 1951 press articles are very significant. I'd expect the Viking fortification to have attracted a set of more diverse academic sources by now if it were really significant and hence worthy of independent note. I want to make changes to my article. All the information I have included is in accordance with the structure and rules of wikipedia. All information has officially verified references. - @Ajab555: I've looked again at the problem. You need to use an edit summary, and keep each change relatively small (under 1000 bytes). It's not a well written filter. Photo upload on a draft
Draft page Lixin Wang https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Draft:Lixin_Wang&action=submit I created a draft for a wiki page the draft got deleted to my knowledge since I did not save it. I am using the same account to try and recreate the same page using the same text and photo but keep getting flagged due to using the same image/file as my previous draft. - Hydrology-Car Images are not relevant to the draft approval process, which only considers the text and sources. You don't need to worry about images until the draft is placed in the encyclopedia.

What style of Infobox should be used for American Cities
Recently, a lot of infoboxes for major cities have undergone changes in how the capitons are placed under images. This is in contradiction with this, However I wanted to see if this change in infobox style was done under consensus. If not, where would be the place to find consensus on it. - You haven't specified what the changes are you are talking about, or even given an example of an article, so I for one have no idea what you are talking about. The guideline you link to says nothing whatsoever about captions. But if you want to discuss this, I suggest either Template talk:Infobox settlement or WT:WikiProject Cities, but please be clearer about what you are talking about. I am trying to create a personal userbox, User:Mandruss/UBX/AntiTikTok, using the userbox User:Mandruss/UBX/Signature as a working example. In the new userbox, the |id=

Geography archeology dots
Sometimes I would go into pages that is related to history and would see three red dots. Like for example would see it on the Eboracum page on the map. Sometimes it would be on ancient sites dating thousands of years ago or just a few hundred years ago. But in some case it would be one big dots eve on ancient related page. - @Edwardadrian: That appears to be how Template:Infobox ancient site chooses to mark the location of the article subject on the map. Other templates may (and do) mark locations in other ways. - @Mechka med: Wikipedia is a collaborative project. Nobody "owns" a draft, even it it's a user subpage, although by convention I think most editors defer to the user for user's subpages. Referencing errors on Battle of Tora Bora
Reference help requested. Hello, new editor here. A bot has just informed me about an apparent error reference in this edit I made on this article. I am still learning how to edit and not quite understanding everything. I have been struggling from the start on how to correctly add citations as I am quite technically illiterate and I quickly lose track of everything, especially since I have been writing simultaneously so effectively multitasking (the show preview feature is really a great help in this respect.) I want to fix the citation errors of course, but I am not quite sure what the error even is or which citation exactly is the issue in this case. I cited multiple sources in that session and can't even tell which one is causing the issue, much less how to fix it. Furthermore, it is difficult to keep track of since everything appears to be working. The bot says something about a "missing periodical", but even after reading that wiki page I still don't understand exactly what that even means. - It appears this error has already been resolved, but the issue was that the {{cite journal}} template you added in the second paragraph of that edit requires a journal name, but none was provided (likely because the linked document was not taken from a journal). The citation was to an online PDF file, which I mistakenly thought was what the cite journal was for since it didn't auto-fill in for the URL like the other citations did. Looking for categorization reporting tool
Hi there! I'm looking for a tool that would do the following:
- Allow you to enter a page (from any namespace) and a category
- If the page is included in a subcategory, then return a result showing the entire category path from the category entered to the category on the page (i.e. category, sub-category, sub-sub-category,...)
I'm asking because I've created a recursive list of talk pages within Category:Wikipedia infobox backlog, and many of the pages in the result don't seem to have a parameter such as |needs-infobox=yes

Moving article when target article is its redirect
Hi, I'm trying to change the name of Muvattupuzha Taluk to Muvattupuzha taluk as "taluk" is part of the descriptor, not the title, and it is not normally capitalized in prose. The latter article already exists, though, as a redirect to the former. I'm not able to complete the move. Is there a quick way to resolve this? - As an extended confirmed user you should be able to move an article to a new name which is currently a redirect without history. As Muvattupuzha taluk has some history you will probably need to use Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests, which is fairly quick as long as no one objects. Username change
Hi all. I'm here to ask about changing my username and if it's possible. I know there is a policy for whether or not it is deemed appropriate to change one's name yet I am not sure where to find it. The reason I want to change it is mainly because I just don't like it—it resonates with me in an improper way, is at least somewhat immature in my eyes, and, additionally, the name carries a lot of history/baggage behind it that I don't want people seeking out so easily as it was created when I was in a younger, less mature age, when I did not care so much about digital footprint (this, of course, has changed). I am here to ask what the policy for username changes is, what effects it can have (will it also affect my Wikibooks, Wikidata, etc. accounts?), and if I should even go about it or if it's just too much effort for a trivial matter. How to efficiently determine who introduced a claim into an article?
One of the ways I often edit is because I'm interested in a topic so I want to read beyond the Wikipedia article, including reading the cited sources. One issue I've seen a lot is that someone will make some claim in an article and I'll think it sounds kind of dubious, so I read the cites and those cites don't actually make the claim which the article text makes (and thus claims that the cite supports). So I'll say "WTF? No, article does not say that" and take it out.
Sometimes these bad cites seem to me like someone is deliberately misrepresenting something, and I want to figure out who was responsible and punish them somehow. I acknowledge of course that we should assume good faith, and we (even outside of Wikipedia) we should not ascribe to malice what can be explained by poor reading comprehension. But even so, I kind of want to slap the relevant accounts with some sort of "You did a reading comprehension fail, please read sources more carefully in future" thing. Even if it's just me whining on people's talk pages or something.
The problem is that I don't know a good way to efficiently identify the edit which introduced a cited claim. I mean, I'm pretty technically sophisticated, so I guess I could do a lot of programming and implement something, but I would think/hope some kind of fuzzy "where did most of these words in about this position in the article probably come from" had already been created because I hate doing work. Or that at least that some people had the same kind of feeling of wanting to figure out who screwed this article up in this way originally happened, and tried to think about what to do with it.
The fundamental problem is that it's extremely low-cost to introduce something wrong into an article and cite some news story about the article's subject which doesn't actually support it, at least compared to accurately verifying that the cite does not actually support the claim which cites it. So my brain naturally wants to do something to balance these costs out somehow. IDK, maybe it's a lost cause. Or maybe, even if there is some good way to determine who introduced some claim, making fun of them for bad reading comprehension isn't a good solution or good for Wikipedia community. I'm willing to accept these things. Nevertheless, what prior work, if any, exists for how-do-I-figure-out-who-originally-added-X-to-article? Dingsuntil (talk) 14:29, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
