Ref number 3 is all wrong - please fix sorry Srbernadette (talk) 00:09, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It tells you exactly what to change. Check date in the |accessdate parameter. Here is the link to the section, click. It is an extra space. Please fix it yourself. And while you are there, the publisher parameter is also malformed. --Majora (talk) 00:15, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have failed with 2 attempts to get the dates correctly done. I do not understand why ref. number 3 is still in red. Please help I am so sorrySrbernadette (talk) 00:23, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please see MOS:BADDATE for a chart with examples of bad and good date formats. You need to learn how to fix these things on your own. --Majora (talk) 00:28, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have had success!!! I have now removed the template at the top of eth page. I believe that this page has enough refs. 00:38, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

The first few introductory lines on the page North Melbourne Football Club are in bold - I think this is unnecessary. I have never edited this page. Please let me know what you think. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Srbernadette (talkcontribs)

Fixed it, thanks for pointing this out. Only the article title and eventual synonyms on first mention should usually be bolded (plus a few additional special cases). See the guideline at MOS:BOLD for more information. GermanJoe (talk) 00:31, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 5.2 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Created page linked to existing one ...

Hey there, folks, I've never run up against this dilemma before, but obviously I did something that I can't understand or find a solution to undo. In attempting to create an article for the 1952 album "Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin" somehow when I finally was ready to "save the page" I was shocked to find that the entire article was now under the title "Oscar Peterson Plays the George Gershwin Songbook", which previously existed as its own article for that album. When I attempted to go back and "undo" what I had done, it did not show any of the work as a large plus number contribution in my history or on the article's history page. Can someone take a look and see what could have gone wrong? I've created pages before, but never run up against something like this. Is there a way to simply revert back to the original article for "Oscar Peterson Plays the George Gershwin Songbook"and yet create a new article "Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin" at the same time? Thanks for any help in advance. Maineartists (talk) 02:30, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted your edit to Oscar Peterson Plays the George Gershwin Songbook, and used your new content to create the new article Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin, and have provided attribution to your edit. When creating a new page you need to do the creation and save in there, rather than saving in an edit to the old article. If you want to do further edits to the new article you can of course now do so. --David Biddulph (talk) 05:09, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
A further problem is that you uploaded the image File:PetersonPlaysGershwin.jpg to Commons, which would only be acceptable if the image was free of copyright. I believe that what you should have done is load it to English Wikipedia under a WP:NFCC rationale in a similar manner to File:Oscarpgershwinsongbook.jpg. It needs deleting from Commons as an unintended copyright violation. David Biddulph (talk) 05:18, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
David Biddulph Thank you! I appreciate all your knowledgeable work on reverting the old and creating the new. Thank you. Maineartists (talk) 12:18, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
David Biddulph I am attempting to delete the image File:PetersonPlaysGershwin.jpg as instructed and load it to English Wikipedia under a WP:NFCC rationale; but I seem to be unable to find just how to do that -- any suggestions? Thank you. Maineartists (talk) 12:46, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've tagged the existing file at Commons for deletion, so hopefully it'll be deleted by an admin there before long. I'm not an image expert so I'll let someone else advise you about uploading it correctly. --David Biddulph (talk) 13:00, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, David Biddulph! I've posted a comment there regarding the use of the same image for two other Clef Records albums: Oscar Peterson Plays Duke Ellington (1952) and Oscar Peterson Plays Harold Arlen (1955) as the one for Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin so hopefully whoever uploaded those will know how to upload this one as well. Thanks again! Maineartists (talk) 20:46, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing errors on Polianthes tuberosa

Reference help requested. I donʻt understand what the problem is. Thanks, Libsys — Preceding unsigned comment added by Libsys (talkcontribs) 02:41, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The error message says "Check |url= value (help)", and the word "help" is in blue to indicate that it is a wikilink, in this case to Help:CS1 errors#bad url. I corrected the error in this edit in October 2015, in response to the question you asked at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2015 October 31#Referencing errors on Polianthes tuberosa. --David Biddulph (talk) 05:26, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I need help fixing my error

This was the first time I was doing a move myself. I was trying to move Draft:New Perry Hotel to mainspace, but I moved it to Wikipedia:New Perry Hotel. I put in a SD on that article and tried the move again, to New Perry Hotel, but it only created a redirect to Wikipedia:New Perry Hotel. How can this be fixed? Well, I figured out that I can SD the redirect then do the move properly. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 04:38, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The 'maintenance template' has been restored as the page doesn't have anything like enough refs for an article of that length. The date in the notice is to inform editors how long the issues have existed for. Eagleash (talk) 05:42, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The changes in one of my edits are not the changes I made; how did this happen.

Tigercompanion25 (talk) 04:09, 23 August 2016 (UTC)Greetings, Wikipedians! On the article for Kwanza Unit, I merely attempted to remove a stray parenthesis and move a comma to the correct location. Imagine my surprise when I look at the difference page here and find all sorts of edits I didn't make, including edits regarding the substance of the article, which is on a subject with which I'm not even familiar. A subsequent editor promptly reverted some of these changes, and quite rightly. My concern is, how did this happen? Has my account been hacked? Or has there been a technical glitch? These changes are too specific for me to think I did them in error. Also, this hasn't happened on any of my other edits, as far as I can tell. I don't mean to be melodramatic about it, but I'm deeply perturbed to have someone making poor edits and giving the impression that they're mine. Any ideas what happened here? (And of course, if there's something really obvious I'm overlooking, my apologies for making a thing about this). Tigercompanion25 (talk) 04:09, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Tigercompanion25:Appears to me that you accidentally edited an old version of the page, as you didn't so much introduce as reintroduce some issues. A bit of digging revealed the version you edited to likely have been the one by FrescoBot in January 2011. this diff shows no change beyond the fixes you meant to implement, and that's what I get when I compare your edit to FrescoBot's edit, so...you probably checked or otherwise ended up at an old version of the page before clicking edit. AddWittyNameHere (talk) 04:38, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, that would explain it. I will be more cautious in future. Thank you for kindly investigating the matter for me! :) Tigercompanion25 (talk) 14:33, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Tigercompanion25: No worries, it happens. Glad to have been of help. AddWittyNameHere (talk) 14:43, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I totally have no ideas what's happening and would like to hear your advice.

Hello, maintenance templates or in this case a proposed deletion (or PROD) notice are not removed automatically but by individual editors who are satisfied that the issues have been addressed. Please read the instructions contained within the notice and make sure the references are properly formatted. This will help anyone reviewing the article to decide upon the reliability of the sources and/or whether the subject is sufficiently notable. Please sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes. (~~~~). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 09:19, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

She worked closely with Pierre cardin,Valentino,and a number of high profile fashion houses. She worked in TV advertising in Madrid for one of the largest detergent company ad campaign. While we appreciate your desire to keep the article accurate, we also cannot just take the word of someone who claims to be someone related to the subject of an article. After all, anyone could come here claiming to be a husband, wife, brother, daughter, etc. of some notable person. That is why we use reliable sources which are cited in the article. I noticed that you removed on bit of info which even said "it was reported". We aren't saying that it is true. The article clearly says that that is what was reported. If you'd like to add additional information, please leave your suggestions (with links to reliable sources) on the talk page of the article at Talk:Suzy Miller. I advise against editing the article directly since you have a conflict of interest. Thank you, †Dismas†|(talk) 12:53, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Help me template for talk pages of protected pages

I've needed multiple times to shut down an edit request on a protected template's talk because either a) the user did not have obvious consensus for his change or b) the user did not suggest a straightforward change.

Is there some template which can provide visibility to a discussion, besides RFC, for such things? Most of the time, the changes are small, and having an RFC every time for such a case seems like a case of WP:BURO. --Izno (talk) 14:44, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Find all Special:MyPage/*.css

Is there a way to find all existing css files (a possible one being Special:MyPage/common.css) that there are for my accounts (currently only the en: and de: one are really in use, since I am not fluent enough in any other languages) Years ago I created a css that did set the [ ] watch this page to [x] watch this page when I edit a page for the first time, but I forgot how I set that by default in my account. When I recall correct there is more than one way to archive that, and one was creating a css page, and now I cannot find that css page since I not recall its name. (It was obviously not common.css.) Dietmar Lettau (talk) 18:31, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

• Yes, and yes. I thought "the css is somehow off", and right I was since it was just [samename].js instead. Makes sense since css is just formatting *facepalms* , while js would do such things as auto-settings... Thanks a lot! Dietmar Lettau (talk) 18:44, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Help with moving chart beside beside another chart.

Does anyone know how to make the two pie charts at [1] be beside of each other instead of on top of each other. When you press show preview in that diff, they are beside each other but aren't when you actually save the page for some reason. WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 18:39, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This was resolved. Thanks @Ruslik0:. WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 19:39, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
When I reload that page, the charts are still on top of each other and not beside of each other. Or do I need to delete my browser cache? Dietmar Lettau (talk) 19:45, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It should work. You may be accidentally clicking on the revision I linked instead of the current state of the page. WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 19:48, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"free field" or "free-field"

I want to to translate the German wikipedia article Freifeld, but, as a web search tells us, and also as Anechoic chamber mentions, both versions ("free field" and "free-field") seem to be in use. Are there wikipedia rules that tell me what the correct article name should be? Dietmar Lettau (talk) 19:26, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If "free field" is indeed the correct translation of the title, you could call the article "Free field (acoustics)" to disambiguate it from the other similarly named articles. See Diaphragm (acoustics) for an example. WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 19:28, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
• Free field (acoustics) it will be. Seems I used the English wikipedia to test if there is a "free-field" article, but the German one for "free field" or it should have found it. Silly me, too many wikipedia tabs in more than one language open. 19:42, 23 August 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dietmar Lettau (talkcontribs)
• And hopefully my last 2 questions: How do I manage to link from Free field (acoustics) to the German Freifeld (since there is no German article about the "Free Field (physics)" or as it is titled in English, simply "Free Field". Also, how to add the header line about "did you mean Free Field (acoustics)" (or how it is phrased) into "Free field"? Dietmar Lettau (talk) 20:35, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Read the advice at WP:YFA, particularly the part about notability and citing sources, and then use the link there to to create a draft at Articles for Creation. RudolfRed (talk) 02:18, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Merkabaraphael21: Along with RudolfRed's advice, you should also make sure that the articles are not too promotional in context, which can be especially challenging to do if you are affiliated with the product(s) in any way through a conflict of interest. (or if the articles include too many external links, see WP:PRIMARY & WP:SECONDARY). Hope this helps. MeowMoon (talk) 04:22, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please, Mike, stop being a pain. If you are not capable of using the delete key to correct your own mistakes, you should not be editing Wikipedia. In any case, what you added to the article was untrue and not supported by the reference. You said "The UK Government requests that holders of a Lairdship record their title, e.g. John Doe, Laird of [......], as an "observation" in their passport", but the reference says "The Lord Lyon King of Arms has also confirmed that for Scottish Lairds it is not necessary for the words "Laird of" to appear on any part of a passport." I have therefore reverted your edit, which solves the problem of the spare characters. --David Biddulph (talk) 07:20, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi David I am sorry for being "a pain". I have really tried hard to use the correct citation RE this Laird article and also I have tried very hard to represent the facts clearly. Amaro Pargo: This article needs a complete overhaul since some erroneous data. They can take as an example the articles in Spanish and French that were recently improved. Hey Bbb23. According to Phab:T7645, the signature button is intentionally hidden in non-discussion namespaces. - NQ (talk) 15:34, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@NQ: That makes sense generally. However, there are pages that are discussion pages but don't appear to be, e.g., user subpages created for a specialized discussion. Is there a naming convention one could use for such pages that would enable the button? What about creating them off the user Talk page as opposed to off the userpage? Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:39, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
A naming convention sounds inflexible but Category:Non-talk pages that are automatically signed might be used to request the button. More generally, there might be a MediaWiki message a wiki could set to a category name. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:51, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: The relevant setting seems to be mw:Manual:$wgExtraSignatureNamespaces. In addition to talkpages, it is enabled by default in the 'Wikipedia' as well as 'Help' namespace on en.wiki. Perhaps extend it to the 'User' namespace as well? I don't see any drawbacks. - NQ (talk) 16:12, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I added the hidden cat to User:GeneralizationsAreBad/Clerking, and it doesn't seem to work. Did I do it wrong?--Bbb23 (talk) 17:09, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Bbb23: That cat only presses sinebot into action when someone leaves an unsigned comment. I don't think there is currently any other way to show the sign button in the toolbar unless it is enabled in the User namespace by the devs. - NQ (talk) 17:14, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Bbb23, I'm assuming you are asking for a way for the sign button to appear for everyone. If this is just for you, then it's quite easy. - NQ (talk) 18:05, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@NQ: Just for me unless there's a consensus that it's a good idea for everyone. Based on the phab report, it doesn't like there is.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:09, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Bbb23: Try adding this to your vector.js

Extended content
jQuery( document ).ready( function ( $ ) {
if ( !$.fn.wikiEditor ) {
return;
}

$( '#wpTextbox1' ).wikiEditor( 'addToToolbar', {
section: 'main',
group: 'insert',
tools: {
'signature-ns2': {
labelMsg: 'wikieditor-toolbar-tool-signature',
filters: [ 'body.ns-2' ],
type: 'button',
offset: [2, -1872],
icon: 'insert-signature.png',
action: {
type: 'encapsulate',
options: {
pre: '--~~' + '~~'
}
}
}
}
});
} );

Let me know how it goes. - NQ (talk) 18:18, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@NQ: Before I install a script that may cause me to involuntarily block all users who don't like sign buttons, I was hoping you were going to give me something that would allow me to add a button but only for specific pages. Now if on those specific pages it had the collateral effect of other users having the same button, that would be fine. I don't expect to do this very often and the pages probably won't interest anyone but me and at most a few other editors.--Bbb23 (talk) 19:55, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Bbb23: All it does is add the button to your toolbar when you're editing a "User:" page. (It's already available everywhere else) Since it goes into your personal script page, it has no effect on other users and loads only for you. - NQ (talk) 20:26, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@NQ: Finally added it. Every time I add a script it makes me nervous. Seems to work, though. Any way you can make it like the others where it's a single line (importscript). It looks "cluttered" to have the entire script on the page. Thanks, if I haven't already said that.--Bbb23 (talk) 02:53, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Some articles

Hello, I saw these articles are they all worth being a different article?

And Each one of them has a corresponding category for them and a template. Can't these be merged together (the articles, categories and templates) in say 1 template (using parameters), 2 categories, and 1 article? Help would be appreciated VarunFEB2003 I am Offline 14:43, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I need personal help from some experienced editor. Can anyone lend me a hand? VarunFEB2003 I am Offline 17:01, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
VarunFEB2003 I doubt any of these articles would survive a deletion discussion, as they fail Wikipedia's notability guidelines for individual seasons. I'll ask at the football (soccer) talkpage for someone to help, but probably they should be deleted/redirected to Moldovan "B" Division. Joseph2302 17:11, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Wait wait I am going to merge them! VarunFEB2003 I am Offline 17:12, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Joseph2302: I am getting the crux of the story now. They have 3 divisions - A, B and National Division. We can create one article - Moldovan Footbal (or something like that) which contains 3 level one headings - A Division, B Division and National Division. Each will contain info from respective articles in a more encyclopaedic form. Wikipedia is not a scorecard so all pages like those which contain just each yearly scorecards like 2007–08 Moldovan "A" Division (under each division) will be deleted. By this way we will finally end up cleaning almost 30 articles into 1 article! How is my Blueprint? VarunFEB2003 I am Offline 17:26, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'll wait till tomorrow after which I shall perform the grand merger. VarunFEB2003 I am Offline 17:29, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Almost, but not quite, correct in my opinion. We already have articles Football in Moldova, which is a general page, and Moldovan National Division, Moldovan "A" Division, and Moldovan "B" Division, and all these articles are fine. The problem is all the articles about a specific season, such as 2009–10 Moldovan "B" Division, aren't needed, because Wikipedia only generally accepts season articles about seasons in important leagues, and the Moldovan "B" Division isn't important enough. As noted at MediaWiki:Badtitletext, prefix-appended links to certain non-local sites don't work, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/meatball:WikiPedia is an error, because the meatball: prefix isn't set up to send people to the Meatball Wiki in the way that meatball:WikiPedia really is set up. Why doesn't this link, and why don't similar links, merely send people to a mainspace page with a title of "Meatball:WikiPedia", with a talk that would end up at Talk:Meatball:WikiPedia? I understand that the folks at Meta can set up the table (can't find a link, or I'd supply it) so that one link would send us to another wiki, and I understand how another prefix would be treated as part of the page name, but I can't understand how a link would work in a bracketed link (e.g. :meatball:WikiPedia) but not in the URL itself. And finally, do we have a list of interwiki prefices that don't work in the URL? I suppose it's probably in the interwiki map table, which I've tried and failed to find while writing this message. Nyttend (talk) 17:16, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

• Meatball is not tagged as "local" in the table (which btw is at meta:iwm, and local copy at Special:Interwiki), so searches and shortcuts will work, but full urls don't. All that's needed is to "simply" set the variable iw_local to 1 for whichever interwiki is needed. What the procedures and policies around that are, no clue here. CrowCaw 17:53, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
• Redirects from Wikimedia sites to non-Wikimedia sites are not allowed and will probably never be allowed. toollabs: wasn't even allowed at phab:T74220 so it still has "no" under "Forward" at Special:Interwiki. meatball: is an interwiki prefix so "Meatball:WikiPedia" would be an illegal page name in mainspace. Question for administrator

<User:Ruud Koot according to his profile "a Ph.D. student in computer science" has made several changes to pages related to the Swarm Intelligence area. He removed numerous references and links from the Bees Algorithm page, substituting them with other non pertinent references, and copied and pasted the following statement: "Nature-inspired metaheuristics in general have started to attract criticism in the research community for hiding their lack of novelty behind an elaborate metaphor.[5][6][7][8][9] In response, Springer's Journal of Heuristics has updated their editorial policy to state that:[10] Implementations should be explained by employing standard optimization terminology, where a solution is called a "solution" and not something else related to some obscure metaphor (e.g., harmony, flies, bats, countries, etc.)." The same statement was copied and pasted (always poorly formatted) on the pages regarding the 'Artificial bee colony algorithm' and 'Harmony search', and probably many more. He has also deleted a long list of algorithms, links, and other material from the 'Swarm Intelligence' page, and semi-protected the page to stop changes. There is no way to undo the changes, as he promptly rolls back his version. From my point of view, his changes are scientifically incorrect. The statement about Nature-inspired metaheuristics is at best disrespectful, and ignorant of the impact of such techniques (over 6000 citations on the topic only this year according to WoS). His re-editing of the Swarm Intelligence page shows a very partial view of the subject, and discarded a lot of fundamental work in the area. I tried to ask him not to vandalise the pages, and respect the contributions of other authors to no avail. Would it be possible to have an administrator to look at the issue and possibly undo his changes? I do not mind scientific criticism of a topic which I value and contributed to, but I don't think one author should arbitrarily remove the contributions of many other colleagues. I am not sure how to report him, I reported his behavior at "Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism", I wonder whether the report should have gone to "Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents" How can I ask arbitration from an administrator? What should I do in similar cases?>

--Marco castellani 1965 (talk) 18:49, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Marco castellani. I get that you are upset about some edits Ruud Koot has made, but you are not going about the issue in a very constructive way. You have put a huge wall of text on this page, which I am not going to wade through to find out if it means anything to me (but the word "vandalise" jumps out at me: in Wikipedia "vandalism" means editing with the purpose of disrupting Wikipedia, and I think it very unlikely that an established editor like Koot has done that).
I see that you attempted to put a similar wall of text on Koot's talk page; but since you did so by replacing the entire content of his talk page by your wall of text, another editor very properly reverted you. Please try again, to post on User Talk:Ruud Koot in a new section, explaining in a more easily readable form how you disagree with his edits, and refrain from accusing him of vandalism. Alternatively, you could talk about it on the talk page of one of the relevant articles.
In any case, this appears to be a content dispute, and WP:Dispute resolution will tell you the proper way to proceed. --ColinFine (talk) 20:01, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear ColinFine, I am still trying to understand how to have an admin to arbitrate the disagreement. I tried to ask for help, and you replied "You have put a huge wall of text on this page, which I am not going to wade through". I read I should communicate with the other user (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Vandalism#Warnings), and unless I cancelled other content inadvertently, I have just added a warning with my view on Koot's page. When I tried to undo the changes on the Wiki pages, I added a motivation for undoing them, and it was ignored. Please be aware that Wikipedia procedures may be a quite confusing maze for non-expert users. Sro23 sent me a warning "you may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you disrupt Wikipedia." I can't say I found the whole system and admins to be user-friendly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marco castellani 1965 (talkcontribs) 22:19, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You are absolutely correct that Wikipedia can be a confusing maze for new users. You might try playing in the sandbox which is a safe place to learn how to edit. However you've asked twice for the administrator to arbitrate a disagreement. Because you are new you are unaware that this is not a function of an administrator. While admin's sometimes get involved in dispute resolution, most dispute resolution involves non-admins.--S Philbrick(Talk) 00:26, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sphilbrick I don't think my main problem is to learn how to edit on the sandbox. My problem is how to stop a user from making extensive changes and deletions on 6-7 different Wikipages according to his personal views of a topic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marco castellani 1965 (talkcontribs) 01:09, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No, Marco castellani, at present your main problem is that you are assuming that you are right and somebody else is wrong. That might in the end be what the consensus decides, but the way to handle it in Wikipedia is by engaging with the other person, and only if you cannot get agreement to escalate according to dispute resolution. I realise that you tried to communicate on User talk:Ruud Koot, and I'm sure that you didn't mean to replace the whole page, but that is what you did. In my view the text you did add to it, like the text you added here, is so dense as to make me unwilling to look at it. I suggest that you post to User Talk:Ruud Koot in a new section, asking politely why he made the changes that you object to, and explaining why you think they are not improvements, rather than the combative way you have expressed yourself above. --ColinFine (talk) 12:45, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ColinFine, I tried to communicate my objections to user Ruud Koot in the motivation for the changes, Talk:Swarm intelligence, and Talk:Bees algorithm. He replied on my talk I have a conflict of interest, which is false and I objected to. I know other academics in the field tried to contact him even personally to no avail. When one user removes a significant portion of material, links, and references on several Wikipedia pages to push forward his personal negative view of a topic, I believe we have a 'democracy' problem. When this user is not an expert in the field, I believe Wikipedia has an authoritativeness problem. I do not believe I am right and somebody else is wrong. I believe one user shouldn't monopolise a topic and shut all other voices off. Anyway, I believe we are going off topic here. Marco castellani 1965 (talk) 14:25, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

OK, Marco castellani. If you think this is not just a content dispute, but there are behaviour issues, then WP:ANI is the place to raise it. But read the material at the top carefully; I suggest you have a look at WP:BOOMERANG as well (I'm not suggesting you're in the wrong: I simply haven't looked at the dispute you are complaining of). --ColinFine (talk) 15:36, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Rettechlms, it's time for a reference interview. At the moment, I don't know what the issue is, basically because I need more information. Please go back to the page that tells you that you're not the right type of editor, copy the URL into your clipboard, and paste the URL here; knowing where you're being sent will help diagnose the issue. You link that autotranslate text: are you perhaps getting the message appearing at this page? Finally, have you tried to upload images here, or at Wikimedia Commons? Did you go to this page or this page? The two websites are related (Commons images appear here at Wikipedia), but they're a bit different and have somewhat different settings, so again, more information would help to diagnose the issue. Nyttend (talk) 21:43, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Rettechlms, I suspect you have been trying to upload pictures to en.wikipedia, which you cannot do because your account is not Autoconfirmed which needs a 4 day old account with 10 + edits.
I don't know where your pictures are from - did you take them yourself? or have you copied them from another website, magazine or other third-party source?
If you took them yourself, you can upload them at WP:Commons without your account being autoconfirmed. If they are from another website, magazine etc. they are almost certainly copyright, so we cannot host/include these images. - Arjayay (talk) 08:46, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the pictures in School library I agree that updated pictures would be welcome; but I disagree that the one with the card catalog should be removed. The caption on the image indicates that it was taken in 1974, a time when card catalogs were definitely widespread. Having historical images is valuable, so that readers can see how the operation of a library has changed over time. That said, there need to be more modern images to compare the historical ones to, so your images will be welcome additions. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 13:49, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

URL encoding again

I see in the archives this has been asked several times, but I tried the previous suggestions and nothing worked for me. How would I insert the following URL in the External links section of an article such that it can be clicked on?

https://digital.library.wayne.edu/digitalcollections/search.php?q=race+riot&fq[]=rels_isMemberOfCollection:%22info:fedora/wayne:collectionvmc%22&start=0&fq[]=facet_mods_year:%221967%22

I copied this URL from my Firefox URL bar. Firefox is doing something funny here. In the bar nothing appears encoded, but when I copy and paste the URL, I get percent encoding of the quote marks. So I'm not even sure I've got the right URL. Kendall-K1 (talk) 02:24, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kendall-K1. Please see percent-encoding. In this case I simply replaced [ with %5B and ] with %5D, to make the working link:
https://digital.library.wayne.edu/digitalcollections/search.php?q=race+riot&fq%5B%5D=rels_isMemberOfCollection:%22info:fedora/wayne:collectionvmc%22&start=0&fq%5B%5D=facet_mods_year:%221967%22
Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:33, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I don't know what you're going to be doing with this, but a search link would generally not be acceptable as a en external link or a citation.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:37, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but why did you change my question? That's not the question I asked. Also I was hoping for some automatic way of doing this, similar to , but this will do for now. As for where I'm going with this, it's for the first EL at 1967 Detroit riot. There used to be a direct link, which became broken when the target re-organized their web site. Someone "fixed" the link by pointing it to the front page of that web site, but if you go there you don't see the expected result. The only way I could find to fix it was to use the search url. But I agree this is a bad idea and am tempted to just remove the link; does that seem like the right thing to do? Kendall-K1 (talk) 02:49, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That was an error. To provide my answer, I was fixing the URL directly to get the working link and once copied I was going to cmd+z back but forgot. I don't know any automatic way; I just tried a search and found this but it doesn't work as I expected fixing some of it but also changing other parts making it non-working. Anyway, seeing what that link provides and the purpose in the article, I think it works. I'd just leave it, despite what I said. The specifics of merits always trumps the general.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:35, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again for your help! Kendall-K1 (talk) 03:40, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There is no automatic way. The link you copied is valid. The problem is just that we use [ and ] (and a few more) as special characters inside wikicode. The wikicode parser therefor has to assume that the link ends at that point. We should probably at least fix URL insertion dialogs in the toolbars etc, to automatically do this for you, because there we at least know that something is part of the url. Please file a ticket in phabricator for that —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 14:43, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Fountain of Youth Theory

The Fountain of youth was a group of pools fed by an underground spring . Surrounding the pools were Macuna Prureins plants . Over the years so many of its fruit had fallen in that whoever drank it felt vigorous . Upon departure Ponce De Leon had his men remove all of the Macuna Prureins plants to make the spring more visible . He had his men clean the springs of all the rotted fruit to improve its appearance . Upon return all that was there was pools fed by an underground spring but no vigorous water . Disambiguation issue.

I am Joe Francis and have been a member of Wikipedia since 2006. Just recently, I have decided to set up a wiki page. My concern is that my page will fall into the disambiguation area and not as the original Joe Francis that signed up before the other Joe Francis entries that seems to come up first . Can you help me understand what is my right and what is not? Thank you.

Twitter @joefrancis (talk) 14:08, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Joefrancis, no one has a "right" to have anything put on Wikipedia about them, although in many cases, you may have a type of "right" to have unsourced or poorly sourced contentious material removed under the biographies of living persons policy.
If you would like to set up a user page for your account on Wikipedia, you can do this by clicking your user name at the very top of the screen (assuming you are on a pc). Otherwise, users are strongly discouraged from writing autobiographical articles. TimothyJosephWood 14:13, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I see that you were trying to edit the disambiguation page to add a link to a photo. That is not how disambiguation pages work; they provide links to Wikipedia articles. If there is not a Wikipedia article about you (nor a redlink from anywhere else), then there isn't an entry for you on the disambiguation page. I've reverted your confused edits. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:45, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Management of WP

I find the question pages extremely confusing to use, so I hope this is the right section to ask these questions.

Who is in overall charge of Wikipedia? To whom should complaints be directed? Who decides policy? Who are those whose view prevails in a dispute? Who are the 'volunteers' who answer questions / reverse changes, etc? Are they appointed or what?

I seem not to be able to find the answers to all these questions. Please advise.

T A Francis (talk) 14:32, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@T A Francis: To answer a few of your questions:
1. Policy on Wikipedia is decided by consensus among all of its editors, not by one individual
2. Again, whichever view has consensus prevails in a dispute
3. Literally anyone in the world can create an an account on Wikipedia and start answering questions, etc.
Pppery (talk) 14:37, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict):Hey T A Francis. Wikipedia is owned by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit based in California. With a few exceptions (those mandated by law, such as copyright), policy is decided by consensus among editors. The volunteers on Wikipedia are just that, volunteers. Anyone can register an account (with very very few exceptions), and anyone can edit an article (with some execptions). Some users are "appointed" by the community, such as administrators, who have permissions most other's don't, like the ability to block a user or delete a page. Hope this helps. There's no need for a disambiguation page before we have three or more articles that need disambiguating. When you or someone else creates the page DJ Paul (hardcore producer, a note can be added to the top of both articles, saying something like "For the rapper, see DJ Paul". When a third DJ Paul shows up, then we will need to create DJ Paul (disambiguation). Rojomoke (talk) 15:49, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) We have an article DJ Paul Elstak which comes up in the autocomplete box when I get to the "a" in Paul, but there appear to only be 2 DJ Paul articles (although one has a discography page as well).
WP:TWODABS states "If there are only two topics to which a given title might refer, and one is the primary topic, then a disambiguation page is not needed—it is sufficient to use a hatnote on the primary topic article, pointing to the other article. (This means that readers looking for the second topic are spared the extra navigational step of going through the disambiguation page.)"
What is suggested, therefore, is a Hatnote (italics at the top of the page) pointing to the other article - for more information and the "how-to" of the syntax, please see Wikipedia:Hatnote - Arjayay (talk) 15:55, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have added hatnotes to both articles - Arjayay (talk) 16:02, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanx a lot! I didn't know about the 3-article-rule but this will do just fine! Once again, thanks guys! OXYGENE 7-13 (TALKPAGE) 16:13, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You can try using Special:Search. Fuortu (talk) 17:51, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Google is your friend. Put the following into Google:
site:en.wikipedia.org your_phrase_goes_here
Replace that last bit with the words you're looking for. If it's an exact match you're looking for, it would help to put it in quotes. The "site:" part limits your search to just the English Wikipedia. †Dismas†|(talk) 17:57, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Are you just looking for a boolean or the specific number? Because there's str sub find, but it doesn't count the occurrences. Bruto (talk) 22:31, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Bruto: Sorry, but I want the specific number. Pppery (talk) 22:33, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Module:PatternCount will do that. Count the occurrences of the pattern 'bob' (without quote marks):

Script error: No such module "PatternCount".

Technical issue / glitch with Special:Watchlist

I use both the Special:Watchlist on de: and en:. With de: all is okay, but there is a glitch with the en: Special:Watchlist : When I load the page, the not yet seen changed pages are first drawn in bold, but when the page is loaded completely, the results in bold all change by themselves into results in non-bold, so I cannot distinguish these anymore from the already seen pages. With de:, the results in bold stay bold. Why is that so and how do I get rid of that glitch? When I reload the en: Special:Watchlist every time the not yet seen changes are again drawn in bold, but again, as soon as the page is loaded completely (that is, after a very short time), the results drawn in bold are all changed into regular results, and at least it looks like that the loaded page gets loaded once more, and this 2nd load then removes the results in bold. (There is no such thing as a 2nd (unneeded) load of that page for the de: variant of Special:Watchlist) Any ideas why that is? Dietmar Lettau (talk) 03:52, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I wanted to add: the size change drawn in bold, or the legend (that seems to be for me in German in the en: Special:Watchlist) like K for kleine Änderungen (small changes) or N (for neue Seite / new page/new article) all stay bold, just the marker for not yet seen changed pages get reverted) Dietmar Lettau (talk) 03:59, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Dietmar Lettau: The English Wikipedia has chosen to remove the bolding by default. Enable "Display pages on your watchlist that have changed since your last visit in bold" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:40, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but when it was disabled, why does at first the pages loads with the changes in bold but reloads with bold changes removed instead of just loading once without changes marked? Dietmar Lettau (talk) 10:54, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Dietmar Lettau: Gadgets can only make JavaScript and CSS which run in your browser after a page has loaded. It's only loaded once from our servers and the MediaWiki default is bolding. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:08, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
In this case there are actually two opposite gadgets. The MediaWiki software comes with bolding and no builtin option to remove the bold. The English Wikipedia removes bolding in MediaWiki:Gadget-WatchlistBase.css, a gadget enabled by default and saying "(This loads the base style for the watchlist. Please do not disable this option.)" Another gadget MediaWiki:Gadget-WatchlistChangesBold.css can then override the first gadget and make bolding again with "Display pages on your watchlist that have changed since your last visit in bold (see customizing watchlists for more options)". PrimeHunter (talk) 11:13, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

┌──────────────────────────────────────────┘
That explains what looks like a 2nd loading... Cheers.Dietmar Lettau (talk) 11:35, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Upload photos

I am working within the National Registry of Historical Places of which my Great-great Grandfather had built the first round barn east of the Mississippi. The listing at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Johnson_Count does not have an image. it allows for a Link click to do so. when i click on it, thinking it would be a simple attachment with my photos, but it takes to the wikimedia. I am far from an expert here, and it looks like anything within this world of wikidome takes a seasoned user, but i did get pictures loaded and there were instances where i could see that Johnson County, or National Registry appeared during the process, so I assumed that I was attaching to the space provided in the registry. Right now I am stuck being an Wikidiot. No where to go and no way to attach the picture where it looks so easy on the outside of the book cover, but it lead me into unexpected territory trying to work with this photo attempt that the Registry uses to upload photos. — Preceding unsigned comment added by David II (talkcontribs) 06:20, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, David II. If you took the photo yourself, then go to Wikimedia Commons. Take a look at the menu on the left side of the home page, and select "Upload file". That will take you to a wizard which should walk you through the process of uploading your photo. Once you have done so, the file information page will give you a number of choices at the top, including one to use the image on Wikipedia. When you click on that choice, it will display the wikicode. Copy that code, and paste it into the right place in the edit window for the article you mentioned above. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 07:04, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
First round barn east of the Mississippi
Hi David II, you have successfully uploaded three photos to Commons. In order to add those to an article you would type , and what would display in the article would be what you see at right. I am concerned, however, about these images, especially the charcoal drawing. You claim all three of them as your own work, yet you note that the drawing was made by "Artist Sherry Newsome". Unless you are Sherry Newsome, you should not claim that drawing as your own work. Likewise, the photos of the barn. Did you take the photos of the barn yourself? Also, when (what year) was the drawing made or the photos taken? It is important to properly label images to prevent copyright violations. I can help you with this, but I need more information. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 14:52, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Image upload

Howdy, Folks. Image uploads have always been a conundrum for me here on Wikipedia. There are so many different avenues in which to upload images and countless categories to file them under that if one does not find that exact perfect match, the image is rejected and deleted. Recently, I created an article for an Oscar Peterson album and wanted to upload the cover. Since it was merely a duplicate for the Clef Records series already uploaded to other article pages: Oscar Peterson Plays Harold Arlen (1955) and Oscar Peterson Plays Duke Ellington (1952), I thought there wouldn't be any problem in uploading the exact same image used for Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin (1952). Obviously, I was mistaken (since it was deleted) and that I had simply not uploaded it through the correct channels that met with Wikipedia standards for copyright. Could someone please advise and direct me as to how I might be able to upload this image correctly in the same fashion that the other images were successfully uploaded? Thank you in advance. Maineartists (talk) 14:49, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

For album covers,
1. go to WP:UPLOAD
2. use the upload wizard
3. on Step 3, choose "This is copyrighted..."
4. use the fourth radio button down labeled "This is the official cover art..."
Assuming that you've filled in everything else, that should allow you to upload a cover image without getting it deleted. †Dismas†|(talk) 15:12, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The problem was that, whereas the other two album covers that you mention were uploaded to English Wikipedia under a non-free use rationale, you had uploaded the album cover to Wikimedia Commons as if it were free of copyright. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:18, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome! Dismas! & David Biddulph! What do you mean, you're not an "image expert"? Wow! THANKS! Maineartists (talk) 15:22, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
per your advice and direction Dismas, I uploaded the image Oscar_Peterson_Plays_George_Gershwin.png and filled in all the information using the same terms as the other image uploads for the same cover art. I hope it is correct this time. Thanks again! Maineartists (talk) 15:40, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good as far as licensing is concerned. My only concern is the quality of the image. Notice how the other two that you reference are both 300x300 pixels or less. You might want to save a lower res version and upload that over the current one. There is a link near the bottom of the file page to upload a new version. There might also be a bot that goes around doing this too. I'm not sure on that though. †Dismas†|(talk) 17:41, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I created a page yesterday because I found that it satisfied the requirements to be its own page. It was extracted from a larger, lengthy page, but has issues of its own. However, today the page was marked for deletion, with no rationale cited. I've asked this user to discuss in the talk page. In the meantime, I'm not sure that I've set up the talk page well, but want to make sure to moderate this discussion process appropriately. The page I created is at MBTA Subway. It is being discussed here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/MBTA Subway – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 17:21, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Tylr00: Also, when you re-use Wikipedia content in other Wikipedia articles, you should read Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and Wikipedia:Splitting. One necessary step is to provide proper attribution of the "parent" article and its contributors. There are various methods and templates available for this, more information is in the linked guidelines. GermanJoe (talk) 17:31, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Finnusertop, GermanJoe Tylr00 (talk) 17:39, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Tylr00[reply]
It is frustrating to have a page nominated for deletion, but it isn't entirely accurate to say that it was marked for deletion "with no rationale cited". The rationale for deletion is in the deletion discussion. As a new editor, you may not have been aware that that is where the rationale is outlined. Also, it is a good idea, before taking any major action on an existing article, such as splitting it, to discuss the action on the article talk page. Also, there are attribution issues, as mentioned above. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:43, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
