How to attribute joint authorship between an agency and a person?

In the article Church of Scientology, I fixed reference 214, as follows:

    {{cite news |agency=AAP |last=Wright |first=Anne |date=2009-11-18 |title=Senator Nick Xenophon brands Scientology a 'criminal organisation' |url=https://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/senator-nick-xeneophon-brands-scientology-a-crimina-organisationl/news-story/c1d9e5562712ad046aad66e3088be1fa |work=Herald Sun |location=Australia |access-date=2022-05-13}}

The source article attributes authorship to "AAP and Anne Wright". Is there a better way to attribute joint authorship between an agency and a person? -- Ghastlyman (talk) 06:09, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Never mind, I replaced |agency=AAP |last=Wright |first=Anne with |vauthors=((AAP)), Wright A. I think that's correct. -- Ghastlyman (talk) 06:43, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Review of article

I have added a article named "Mothparja", a small village. I have expanded it , have given infobox, sections and also have given references. But except that it is a stub-class article. So please help me to improve it and increase its level. If there is any mistake please correct it.FAAHS (talk) 08:23, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, FAAHS. I've added Talk:Mothparja to WP:WikiProject Pakistan. You might like to ask for somebody at that WikiProject to review and grade it. ColinFine (talk) 09:56, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Order of categories

Let's say that a "John Doe" article belongs in categories "2022 births", "People from Foo", "Everymen", "Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence winners", "War of the Ring veterans", etc. In which order do categories go in the bottom of the article? Order of significance? Alphabetic order? First come, first served? Anything goes? Cambalachero (talk) 12:58, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    I looked at Help:Category and I don't think there's any specific order.
    Asparagusus (interaction) 13:28, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
MOS:CATORDER says they can be any order, though some people like to re-order them to make them alphabetical, which isn't required. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:30, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Generally speaking, whatever order you think of them in. So the first relevant category to come to the mind of the person adding categories comes first, and it goes from there. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:34, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What is the right template to use for fair use company logos?

    Hi all

I recently wrote an article for Dora Goodman Cameras and would like to add their logo in the infobox (see here in top left for the logo). I assume this is a fair use image but can't work out which template to use. Does anyone know?

    Thanks

@John Cummings Have you tried uploading via Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard > Upload a non-free file > This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use. > This is a logo of an organization, company, brand, etc.? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:58, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Gråbergs Gråa Sång thanks, that seemed to work, can you just double check I've done it correctly File:Dora_Goodman_Cameras_logo.png? Never uploaded a non free work before. Thanks again, John Cummings (talk) 14:12, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@John Cummings Looks fine to me. I'm no expert, but I've uploaded a few and they haven't been deleted. There is a rule about the size of non-free stuff, but these days that is handled automatically by a bot, so that will be done if needed. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:20, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Photo deleted

I posted a picture of Musa Kaleem on his Wikipedia page and it's been deleted twice? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MeelakIbrik (talkcontribs) 15:47, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Did you actually take the photography yourself? You uploaded it to Commons claiming it was your 'own work'. AndyTheGrump (talk) 15:52, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The photo is of my father. My mother gave it to me. It's our family photo. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MeelakIbrik (talkcontribs) 15:58, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, so you did not actually take it yourself. Do you know who did take the photo? Because it is the photographer who would need to release it under an appropriate license. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:01, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The file is currently here but was nominated for deletion because it is the same as this image on Discogs. So it isn't suitable for Commons as it must be freely licensed. You would need clear evidence of ownership if it turns up elsewhere on the web.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 16:03, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@MeelakIbrik Allow me to take the liberty of expounding on IanMacM's comment. That picture appears on a Web page, and the Web page says "copyright 2022 Discogs" in the footer. So, Discogs is claiming copyright on the contents of the page. This raises questions: Did you post the picture at Discogs? Are they supposed to have that picture? Did you (perhaps inadvertently) allow Discogs to claim copyright on the picture? (I know some of the questions, but I don't know the answers.) IanMacM and ONUnicorn have given good advice -- possession of a photo does not necessarily mean ownership of its copyright. Unfortunately, copyright law is complicated. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 10:29, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Vandalism help request from 174.64.17.141

I have noticed some vandalism at PAGENAME. Namely, BRIEFLY DESCRIBE THE VANDALISM HERE. Would an editor please assist me with fixing it? Thank you,

"(A persistent myth has pervaded the biographical literature, to the effect that MacArthur wore a "specially designed sharkskin uniform" at the 1936 ceremony to go with his new rank of Philippine Field Marshal. Richard Meixsel has debunked this story; in fact the special uniform was "the creation of a poorly informed journalist in 1937 who mistook a recently introduced U.S. Army white dress uniform for a distinctive field marshal's attire.")[120]"

Myths and legends have no place in factual articles. This alleged "myth" is new to me. I have NEVER, in 62 years, heard this in a documentary or in a book. Please remove and investigate the admistrator responsible for its inclusion. 174.64.17.141 (talk) 17:00, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It is appropriately sourced to an article in the Journal of Military History. It is not vandalism. Moreover, you ask that we "remove and investigate the adminstrator responsible..." It was added by Lloydfraser on January 25, 2022. Lloydfraser is not an administrator, just a regular editor. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 17:37, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It's coming from Help:Simple_guide_to_vandalism_cleanup#Alternative:_Call_attention_to_it. There is a button in the collapsed section for pages that are not high traffic, which generates a help desk post like the one above.
I find it slightly amusing that people are able to figure out how to find that help page, but not figure out how to use the resulting template, or how to use any of the easier/less obscure ways to draw attention to vandalism. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:04, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally, Help:Simple guide to vandalism cleanup was created June 5, 2020. The button in question made an appearance that same day, in the 5th edit. So it's been there since June 5, 2020. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:09, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Victoria Asher's wiki page

    Hi,

I'm a professional writer. I have agreed to help Vicky Asher with the technical requirements of her Wiki page. Will you guys work with me to restore her page, please? I have credentials if that helps.

Hello, and welcome to the Teahouse! As far as I am aware, there is no page called Victoria Asher. Do you mean that you are creating a page for her? Are you being paid to edit? Even if you are not, you would still have a conflict of interest, which goes against the guidelines. A good Wikipedia article is supported by reliable sources and shows neutral point of view towards the subject. Would you be able to provide that? Wikipedia is not a place to advertise or promote people or organizations.
    Asparagusus (interaction) 18:27, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    This might be related: Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Victoria_Asher RudolfRed (talk) 18:39, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This is the result of an off-wiki campaign by the subject herself, I wouldn't pay much attention to it. PRAXIDICAE💕 18:42, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Authormccastille The first step for you in your quest to ensure Wikipedia contains an article about Victoria Asher is to read and really understand our policies and guidelines about verifiability, notability (including the subject-specific notability guideline for musicians), reliable sources, independence of sources, and how we treat primary, secondary, and tertiary sources. The second step, since you were at least asked by Ms. Asher (if not paid by her) to help recreate her article, is to read and really understand our policies on conflict of interest editing, paid editing, and the terms of use of this website. Once you have done that, you will know that the third step is to make the required paid editing disclosure. The fourth step is to do the research and gather the necessary sources about Ms. Asher. Then you can create a draft, making sure to cite your sources, perhaps using the advice given at referencing for beginners. If you want to use the text and sources cited in the former article, it is still publicly available in the page history, but make sure to provide attribution for copyright purposes as described at copying within Wikipedia. Once you have a draft that you are sure addresses the concerns expressed in the deletion discussion, I would recommend opening a deletion review, under use 3, so that you can establish consenus that your new verison adequately addresses the notability concerns raised in the first deletion discussion. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 19:40, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would add that they should familiarize themselves with WP:SIGCOV. Passing mentions in articles do not establish notability. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 19:51, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
WP:SIGCOV is part of WP:GNG - the link just links to a section on the broader page. If they read and really understand GNG, they will automatically familiarize themselves with SIGCOV. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 19:58, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Authormccastille: While all of the above is valid, I think the order is incorrect. Before you do anything else, you should convince yourself that the subject, Victoria Asher, is notable by our definition. If the subject is not notable, then there is nothing you can do to create an article that will survive the deletion process, so you will be wasting your time and our time. See WP:AMOUNT. -Arch dude (talk) 22:10, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Could you delete this thred so I don't get any more responses please? Authormccastille (talk) 22:52, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
We can close the thread, but not delete it. 331dot (talk) 23:30, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In addition to the above, even then, it's very rare for threads to be closed on request. They usually run out of steam once it seems the question has been answered. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 23:34, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Adding an author to the site

My mother is Author Amelia Hutchins, she was raised and born in Spokane Washington. I am trying to get her added to authors from Spokane Washington's notable people.

She's a Wall Street Journal Bestseller, and has been on the USAT Bestselling chart numerous times.

Wall Street Journal link, under E-books for February 5th. https://www.wsj.com/articles/bestselling-books-week-ended-february-5-11644526690

USA Today Bestselling list is April 29th, 2021, August 5th, 2021, and February 10th, 2022

She was born in Sacred Heart, and has lived here her whole life. She's got over 30 books published, and took the charts by herself when they said it couldn't be done. I would like her to open wiki and see herself here, in the city she loves. Site we'd like to have her added to. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_from_Spokane,_Washington

Thank you so much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.16.121.67 (talk) 05:51, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That would depend on whether she is considered notable enough to satisfy Wikipedia's notability guidelines for authors; in the event that she is, an article about her would be made first before being added to List of people from Spokane, Washington. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 05:59, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would hope that her telling publisher's she'd just do it herself, and then doing it three times and landing on a larger list than the one they turned her down for would do it. She is one of only a few independent authors to take the WSJ without a publisher. She's pretty badass in my book considering they said it wouldn't sell, and she's sold over one million copies of just one of thirty books. Thanks for the help. 24.16.121.67 (talk) 06:12, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia does not care about where an author was born and raised, and Spokane authors are no more notable than Mumbai authors or Tokyo authors or Lagos authors or Indianapolis authors. What is so special about Spokane? Disclosure: My great-grandparents were wheat farmers near Spokane their entire adult lives, but who cares? What matters is not listings on publishing industry backscratching bestseller lists, which are notoriously subject to manipulation. What matters are reviews of the author's books, written by professional or academic reviewers, that appear in highly reliable publications. Cullen328 (talk) 06:31, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It looks to me that WP:NAUTHOR wants more than reviews of books; it wants the author to be regarded as an important figure or is widely cited by peers, or else has created or played a major role in co-creating a significant or well-known work or collective body of work. In addition, such work must have been the primary subject of multiple independent periodical articles or reviews. It sounds like just having "ordinary" books reviewed is not enough, unless those books are significant. Am I interpreting that correctly? 73.127.147.187 (talk) 10:48, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
IP editor, you have uderstood NAUTHOR, but an author could also be notable if they satisfy WP:NBASIC "People are presumed notable if they have received significant coverage in multiple published[1] secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other,[2] and independent of the subject.[3]". TSventon (talk) 12:18, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks fir that info, @TSventon. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 11:03, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    References

    1. ^ What constitutes a "published work" is deliberately broad.
    2. ^ Sources that are pure derivatives of an original source can be used as references, but do not contribute toward establishing the notability of a subject. "Intellectual independence" requires not only that the content of sources be non-identical, but also that the entirety of content in a published work not be derived from (or based in) another work (partial derivations are acceptable). For example, a speech by a politician about a particular person contributes toward establishing the notability of that person, but multiple reproductions of the transcript of that speech by different news outlets do not. A biography written about a person contributes toward establishing their notability, but a summary of that biography lacking an original intellectual contribution does not.
    3. ^ Autobiography and self-promotion are not the routes to having an encyclopedia article. The barometer of notability is whether people independent of the subject itself have actually considered the subject notable enough that they have written and published non-trivial works that focus upon it. Thus, entries in biographical dictionaries that accept self-nominations (such as the Marquis Who's Who) do not contribute toward notability, nor do web pages about an organization's own staff or members.

    Changing photo on page

How can I change the photo on a page - the page is Adrian Grogan — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gail Grogan (talkcontribs) 09:12, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Adrian Grogan currently has an ok official portrait in the infobox. Since he is a living person, the new image would have to be freely licensed (ie not copyrighted in any way). You can upload files to Wikimedia Commons here.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 09:35, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Gail Grogan Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. WP is very careful about copyright, but if you are in close contact with him, this can be fairly easy.
Take a new (previously unpublished anywhere) picture of him yourself, and then upload it with the process that starts here. That is a link to Commons, a sister-site where we keep "free" images. Unless other editors think it's a worse picture, it can then be used in the article, but a newer image should be considerd a +. You can then comment here again, and hopefully someone will be willing to help or at least comment. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:27, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

LEOleeBrother Please see files for upload. 331dot (talk) 14:21, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Copyright of photos is tricky (it usually belongs to the photographer), so the very best to use will be one you took yourself, LEOleeBrother or one taken by another family member whose estate you have now inherited, for example. One possibility, since Eveline Burchill is dead, you could take a screenshot from the RTE video I note is on their website and upload that under the "fair use" provisions (see WP:FAIRUSE). Caleb Blood Smith

    (Detailed text)

Why do you have that Smith is buried in Connersville, Indiana, that is NOT true! Years ago I sent proof that Caleb B. Smith was not buried in Connersville, the history books say that because that's what Elizabeth (Watton) Smith wanted everyone to think. But that's not the truth. Elizabeth Smith wanted everyone to think that because after the Civil War the Southern dissenters were coming from south to north descrating bodies and Elizabeth was terrified that they would do that to her husband. Smith was first buried in Greenlawn cemetery in Indianapolis, then Crownhill Cemetery opened about 6 months later and she paid $500 for a plot of her choice to have Smith buried in, but he wasn't buried there either. (A 1977 opening of the mausoleum at Crown Hill proved that, only his wife and daughter were buried there.)

A 1977 excavation, that I attended and wrote about in the Connersville, Indiana City Cemetery was carried out in the Watton lot, or Watton-Smith lot, and Smith was found not to be there. The body that was found was Smiths brother-in-law William Watton Jr. There is a story that has pictures, letters, and consent to excavate along with other valuable information - here at https://archive.org/details/WeirdMystery/page/n51/mode/2up

Caleb Blood Smith owned a home in Connersville, now refered to as Elmhurst and it's on Wikipedia. It has been said that Smith was buried in the basement of Elmhurst, but that's never been proven. There is a lot of speculation on where Smith has been buried, for example under the mausoluem at Crown Hill, or in Cincinnati or even behind Elmhurst. There is a graveyard behind Elmhurst. I also can't imagine that Smith would be buried at Elmhurst because he left and went to Indianapolis and died there. So I can't imagine his wife asking if they could bury a body in the basement.

I've got a lot of info on Smith that I've found and it's all documented information, old news paper clippings, and stories from family members. Letters inquiring about the location of Smith, and recent news articles about Smith and where he's buried. No one knows, no one will probably ever know. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sensionson (talkcontribs) 22:00, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Sensionson:, I looked at your source and I don't think we can use it, but there's enough there that I don't feel comfortable anymore stating with virtually 100% certainty that he is buried in Collinsville, so I think the best solution is to remove mention of his burial location altogether, and this I have done. There's more on the article talk page if you wish to engage further, see you there. Herostratus (talk) 00:44, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't care anymore, you can stick it where the sun don't shine, others have accepted it and know it's true, and my story about it has been in several newspapers because of the proof that I have. . and it's CONNERSVILLE, not Collinsville dumbass. Have a nice day. Sensionson (talk) 01:59, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sensionson, someone out of the hundreds of people who have edited the article in its past 18 years of existence must have thought Connorsville was correct, or they wouldn't have added the (false?) information (it would be possible, but tedious, to find out who) but without a reliable source to cite, the article shouldn't say it, or for that matter say where else his body might be. It is of course possible that it was, at some point, interred in Connersville and later moved to somewhere else unknown.
We could include at least some of the information you are putting forward if it has (a) been published in a reliable source (WP:RS) that has editorially checked its accuracy, and not just reprinted self-reported original research (which Wikipedia never uses), and (b) that source is correctly cited. Wikipedia does not permit in-text external links, see Wikipedia:Citing sources). It is up to the person adding the information to cite correctly, not to leave the job half-done and expect someone else to clear up the mess. You were reverted for incorrectly using external links as long ago as 2013 (by a bot, not a person), but seemingly have not learned any better in the 9 years since.
This is a collaborative project in which (nearly) everybody is trying to co-operate to build an encyclopedia. Boldly editing (as you correctly did), Reverting the edit if thought inappropriate (as Herostratus correctly did), and then civilly Discussing the matter is all part of the standard WP:BRD process: acting aggressively and insulting other editors is not. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.208.88.97 (talk) 23:07, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Page Translations

I used the translate feature to translate an article from Italian wiki into English. I over-wrote nearly every word of the machine translation into neutral wikipedia style, as required. I then saved it to work on it later rather than Publish it, but now I can't seem to find it. Where does one find drafts of a translated article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Amantedelcinema83 (talkcontribs) 23:03, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Amantedelcinema83: This question is your only edit to Wikipedia, so your work was not "saved". What action did you take that you think would have "saved" it? The way you "save" something (including your question here) is to hit the miss-named "publish" button. -Arch dude (talk) 23:10, 14 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Amantedelcinema83: It sounds like Arch dude doesn't know Wikipedia:Content translation tool which works differently from other editing. Unpublished translations in progress should be visible at Special:ContentTranslation but machine translation is disabled in the tool at the English Wikipedia so I'm not sure what you were doing. Also, new users cannot publish translations here. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:14, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I found it, thank you. What are my options? Should I simply create a new page in English Wikipedia? Amantedelcinema83 (talk) 06:17, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Amantedelcinema83: As a new user you can only create it as a draft and submit it for review. The source article must be credited. See Help:Translation and Wikipedia:Articles for creation. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:00, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Even if the current draft is mostly in your own words, you should follow the guidance at WP:TRANSLATE, in particular to credit the Italian source you used. You can copy/paste your current version into a new draft you set up using the WP:AFC process. Later, you can submit the cleaned-up draft for review, so experienced editors can confirm it meets our standards for new articles on English Wikipedia. Thanks for wanting to help expand the encyclopaedia. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:04, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Problem with Creating Draft

Problem solved! — Preceding unsigned comment added by JudithMHWhite48 (talkcontribs) 02:43, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is it useful to add "language" parameter to English citations?

{{Cite web}} says: "When the only source language is English, no language is displayed in the citation." I see some editors add "language" parameter to English refs. Does it improve the ref? Is it useful? --Mann Mann (talk) 05:50, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say WP:If it ain't broke, don't fix it. No it isn't useful. So far, the language parameter, if English, doesn't modify the reference in any way, but it doesn't break it either. Not worth wasting time and effort and getting into needless edit wars with others who add this needless parameter. CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 06:03, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@CX Zoom: Thanks for the reply. I agree with you. I wanted to remove it from the articles I watch and edit. But as you said, it's better to ignore such stuff. --Mann Mann (talk) 06:26, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've also seen (but can't remember where) a suggestion to keep the tags as they can help Wikipedians working to translate articles for our sister projects. I haven't done translation work, so I don't know how much of a benefit they are. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 13:37, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Some tools automatically add language to items, you can safely remove them if they do - but it's usually pointless changing. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 23:04, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Firefangledfeathers and Lee Vilenski: Interesting info, thanks. --Mann Mann (talk) 03:04, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I would like to change the section title of some articles. But that would break many links to there. Do you know if there is a mean (say a robot) to redirect the links automatically to the new title. I mean, if I change "The surface integral" to "surface integral" for example, I would like to use a robot to say it: change every link to "the surface integral" to the new link "surface integral". Thx. maimonid (talk) 08:35, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Cewbot 6 does try to fix these. Galobtter (pingó mió) 09:13, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @Galobtter. But I'm not sure I understand this bot: If I change the title of a section completely say, and leave the content of the section unchanged, will the bot do its work (automatically)? maimonid (talk) 10:55, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Maimonid: I believe that one can use Template:Anchor in such a case. If you create an anchor in a heading, with the former name of the section (such as ==Surface integral{{subst:anchor|The surface integral}}==), links to the old name of the section will still work even after you change the name. Deor (talk) 13:07, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    @Deor: Thank you so many for this answer; that's exactly what I needed.maimonid (talk) 06:04, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    New article

    Hello

I'm new to wikipedia but very interested in making my contributions. How ever I don't seem to be able to make new articles. Why is that and how can I do it?

Regards, Lárus Sigurður. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lárus Sigurður (talkcontribs) 13:35, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia editing Lárus Sigurður. New editors are prevented from creating articles directly into Mainspace, as experience tells us they often don't do a good job. However they can use the articles for creation system which among other things allows experienced editors to review and accept/decline/reject the work. Please read WP:YFA or start by improving one of our existing articles in an area you are interested in — that way you'll learn the ropes before you tackle the bigger challenge of writing something from scratch. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:51, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)Welcome to Wikipedia. In most cases, new accounts cannot create articles until they are 4 days old and have made 10 edits. I would recommend creating your first article in draft space and submitting it through WP:AFC so that you get feedback from experienced users. I also would not recommend trying to create a new article until you've been around for a while working on improving existing articles and are significantly familiar with the confusing maze of policies and guidelines that govern content here. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 13:58, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to see this link-list [1] with links from templates like Template:Underwater diving excluded. Is that possible? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:05, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You can select the Template namespace from the dropdown near the top and then check the box that says "Invert selection". Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 16:06, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Firefangledfeathers Thanks, but that doesn't seem to work [2]. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:14, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I can't solve the general problem, but a Wikipedia search for "History of Diving Museum" finds "History of Diving Museum" plus five other articles before it starts finding articles with Template:Underwater diving. Only the first two are links. TSventon (talk) 16:41, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Searching is how I knew to try that search. What do you mean by simpler? Simpler search, simpler documentation, simpler something else?
    Trappist the monk (talk) 18:55, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Trappist the monk I meant simpler documentation, to see if my Google search had found the simplest available explanation of what you had done. TSventon (talk) 20:58, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:PrimeHunter/Source links.js can search for links which are in the source and not only a transcluded template. It eliminates all templates at the same time and still finds articles which both have a link in the source and a template. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:39, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Josquin des Prez image scaling

In my work on Josquin des Prez for FAR, I was trying to make the lead image a little larger, as it is rather small. For FAs we're told not to use px size (I have no idea why) so I was trying to use 'upright=1.7' (or whatever number worked nicely) but for some reason this isn't altering the size of the image in preview? Removal of my name

Dear Wikipedia, Due to privacy reasons I’d like my page to be deleted. The page is for Phyllis Grant. I don’t like having my personal info on the internet. I’m deleting all my presence. Phillis, I have redacted your contact number: it's a bad idea to publish it in a public forum like this, particularly if you have privacy concerns. I will shortly ask an Admin to remove it from the page history where it can still be seen if someone looks. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.208.88.97 (talk) 23:14, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for removing it! I thought this was a private message platform! -Phyllis — Preceding unsigned comment added by Balin80 (talkcontribs) 23:17, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

As to removing the article, Wikipedia does not routinely do that merely at the request of the subject (which, strictly speaking, we do not at this point have proof you, Balin80, are, although I am assuming it). After all, everything in the article should be cited to published, publicly available sources. I see that it's quite lightly referenced, so someone may decide that it could be argued not to demonstrate sufficient Notability (in the sense of not having enough independent documentation to qualify for a Wikipedia article – nothing to do with your actual prominence in the Real World!), and nominate it for Deletion. I will leave such matters to editors with more experience in this field. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.208.88.97 (talk) 23:28, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way I could provide proof of who I am? At any rate, I hope it has insufficient independent documentation. I’m surprised there’s so much info on the wiki page: my age, where I live specifically, my affiliations. I am a well-known artist in Canada, yes, but it makes me feel uneasy seeing photos that someone had to really dig for posted on my wiki page from ages ago (I tried to remove it, I’m sure it’ll be added back). I enjoy wiki but I don’t think people should have access to so much of my personal life. Thanks so much for your help. I wish there was a way I could prove I’m the person in the article! -Phyllis — Preceding unsigned comment added by Balin80 (talkcontribs) 23:38, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. We publish articles about notable subjects, using information from published reliable sources. The article does not belong to you and we do not give you any permission to control the article, so there is no reason for you to prove who you are to us. However, we really do try hard to consider your privacy concerns so we insist that any information at all about a living person is properly referenced: see WP:BLP. If you or any one of us sees anything in the article that is not referenced, then we are supposed remove that information. -Arch dude (talk) 02:34, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Balin80: The Phyllis Grant article has now been nominated for deletion. The nominator said that the references are insufficient, but this is not a valid reason for deletion. I went ahead and also recommended it for deletion because there does not seem to be anything in the article that indicates that the subject is notable by our definition, which is a different issue. Note that Phyllis Grant may eventually do something that makes her notable, and it that happens, someone may create an article and she will have no control over it. -Arch dude (talk) 02:55, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude:, you didn't sign your post to the deletion discussion. TSventon (talk) 03:03, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome, thanks Arch dude! -Phyllis — Preceding unsigned comment added by Balin80 (talkcontribs) 03:00, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a bit confused about what to do now

I reverted this edit because it looked like content removal without an adequate reason. But then the same IP reverted my edit with this edit summary:

Big Lies! Liar! Liar! That's a Big Lie! Don't Do That or You are Grounded!

    (The diff is here)

Should I revert again (this is the 2nd out of three reverts if I revert again)? I.hate.spam.mail.here (talk | contributions) 22:53, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@I.hate.spam.mail.here: Reverting clear cases of vandalisim or other disruptive editing would most likely be considered and exception to the three-revert rule per WP:NOT3RR; at some point, though, it might simply be better to seek assistance from an administrator at WP:AN, WP:AN3 or WP:AIV per WP:DENY. An administrator may decide to block the account in question to prevent any further disruption or may decide to protect the article instead. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:21, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And also, does anyone know why the edit that added this section was suppressed? I.hate.spam.mail.here (talk | contributions) 04:20, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
When a edit is suppressed or revision deleted, there's usually a good reason for doing so that almost certainly can't be discussed in specifics on any public page. If you want to see who suppressed the edit on a page, you can usually find out by looking at the page's history or checking the page's log. In almost all cases, you find an edit summary listing to policy based reason why the edit needed to be surpressed or revision deleted. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:33, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Marchjuly,I.hate.spam.mail.here: when an edit was suppressed, it won't show in any public log entries. Suppression is logged in the non-public suppression log, which is inaccessible with exception to oversighters, arbcom, stewards, ombudsmen and some WMF staff. In this case it seems the edit had to be suppressed because someone added private data in #Removal of my name above, which was not removed until after this section was created. Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 05:31, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying things Victor Schmidt. @I.hate.spam.mail.here: if you really want to know why an edit was suppressed, you might have to contact an WP:OVERSIGHTer directly and ask. They might only just give you a general explaination like Victor did in this case. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:38, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Need to create page for Marci Collier Overstreet

    {{UserboxCOI|1=Title of your draft}

Please help me create my page with the correct name. I’ve submitted the information more than once. I need help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Macmama3 (talkcontribs) 02:01, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Macmama3. If you would like to create an article about someone named Marci Collier Overstreet, then you can try as long as Overstreet satisfies Wikipedia:Notability (people) or Wikipedia:Notability#General notability guideline. If you feel Overstreet is Wikipedia notable, then my suggestion to you would be to first read this and this, and then start working on a draft for an article as explained here. Once you feel your draft is ready for review, you can submit it for assessment. If you are somehow personally or professionally connected to Overstreet or have been asked by Overstreet of their representatives to create such a Wikipedia article, you should also take a look at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest for additional information that most likely applies to you. This doesn't necessarily mean that you can't try to create an article about Overstreet, but it might mean that there are more things you need to consider when doing so. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:27, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Changing capitalization of a redirect page

The capitalization of the redirect page Linus media group (which redirects to a section of Linus Sebastian) should be changed to Linus Media Group (this is a minor gripe). When requesting to Move the page, it warns that Linus media group will redirect to the new "Linus Media Group" and to avoid creating double redirects. To me, this seems to imply that the redirects will be Linus media group → Linus Media Group → Linus Sebastian, which should be avoided.

Am I wrong about this? Is there any problem with moving the redirect? Is it even worth the effort?

    Worst Username (talk) 02:36, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It's generally pointless to move redirects. A redirect at Linus Media Group pointing to the same place already exists, so there is no need to do anything. * Pppery * it has begun... 02:38, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. I didn't even realize that redirect already existed. It just bugged me that the search showed the incorrectly capitalized version. But this whole thing is of very little consequence anyway. Worst Username (talk) 02:44, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
